A-Morir @ ChinaShop
[ 23 October 2009 ]

I discovered A-Morir at the beginning of the year. The Patricia Field Boutique in NYC is a veritable treasure trove of all things colorful, shiny & over-the-top, but even among their choicest pieces, something stood out: a pair of Swarovski crystal-encrusted glasses. The frames were square & oversized, & the crystals were gleaming gunmetal. They made me think of what the World Spelling Bee champion would wear if they’d had a huge (albeit underaged) win in Las Vegas.
You’ve seen A-Morir too– you just don’t know it yet. A-Morir is an accessory line, but customized eyewear is what they’re known for. A-Morir glasses have been donned on The Hills, the red carpet & in a variety of music videos. They’ve adorned the faces of a slew of true modern icons like Cassie, Katy Perry, Mariah Carey & Jazmine Sullivan. A-Morir also counts Rihanna as one of its most enthusiastic supporters, meaning it’s really only a matter of time until this one-girl operation is no longer a top-end secret…
Love letters & feather headdresses,

Cool stuff & all, but show me someone wearing that stuff who isn’t on stage or in a music video. What’s the appeal for us regular nonpareils? How would I wear these things in my daily/nightly life?
Alzy — If I owned a pair of bedazzled frames I would wear them 24/7… But then, I care not for appropriateness. Haha!
Oh Kerin, she does have awesome glasses! I learned about her months ago when I saw them in a few photographs I admired. These are times yet again when I hate having to wear glasses. I am so jealous of those who can wear awesome sunglasses and glasses! Having those frames for my prescription would be fabulous!...If that were possible!
very funny picture :)
A-morir, to die for. I wish I could have come up with that! This makes me want to bedazzle all my glasses..
Oh Gala! Please include this in one of your posts. The message behind it, the female empowerment, the ending- All jaw dropping. It seems so worth advocating, a lingerie ad for woman!

seems like you’ve really been killing two birds with one stone with this new china shop gig. nearly every article you post now is just a link to their site :(
Ellie — I’m sure it would be… All you would need to do is pop the plain lenses out & have your optometrist fill them. I wear contact lenses pretty much all the time, otherwise I would do exactly that!
J. — Well, I write them three pieces a week, so that’s why you hear about it so often! Makes sense oui? ;>
I have never heared of her but i think the glasses she makes are awesome and maybe not affordable but at least inspirational! (i want to make a glitter-rim over everything now)
Great interview but i’m left wondering what the name of her company stands for..
Amika- A morir is spanish for “to die”
Haha, love that pic.
Hate to sound like a killjoy but it’s annoying to have these plug-posts for ChinaShop clogging up iCiNG… they already have a permanent link at the top of the page, and it doesn’t interest me in the slightest whereas the rest of your content does!
K — Sorry to hear that but they are going to continue regardless :>
Oh, gorgeous glasses. I want to bedazzle (that’s such a fun word, hahaha) everyting I own now. I’m in a sequin&glitter mood.
Amazing glasses! Talk about adding some sparkle to you eyes. .

Thanks Lolita Valentine :)
Have to agree with the girls above. The Chinashop thing is ruining your blog. Every time I look its like..Read more at Chinashop! Obviously its your choice but it puts me off reading your blog and I can imagine others feel the same way.
Dear lord
It’s Gala’s website and she can put whatever the fuck she wants on it.
Glasses inspiration, yeah! I have a rare condition called achromotopsia (complete color-blindness) and I’m legally blind. I’ve worn glasses since I was a year old – and I got teased and bullied relentlessly because of them. At age 16 I’d had enough, and just stopped wearing them. Tried contacts but my eye condition doesn’t work with them. So I just wore nothing. Can you say eye-strain? I made things worse for myself but I was so sick of it.
THEN, when I was 21, I met this awesome dude (lead singer of a pirate metal band) who became a close friend. He had achromotopsia too, and wears the raddest pair of red glasses which actually help 100x better than any of my old glasses.
Last year, I got my first pair of glasses in 8 years – wicked red lenses in snazzy black/red/metal frames. They’re so unique and wicked, I love wearing them. I’ve now seen a second pair (with black victorian filigree inserts) that I can’t wait to wear.
That’s all to say, kudos to A-morir and all the other rad glasses designers for helping to make perscription lenses fashionable and helping people feel proud of their differences! And thanks Gala, for bringing A-morir to my attention!
Hi Gala,
Reading through L&S 6, you spoke about having to wear a uniform all through school… I am reminded of this young woman’s project “The Uniform Project”, which is raising money for kids in India. She takes a basic black smock/dress and adds to it to make it different everyday for a year! Granted she adds a ton to it, but the dailies are so fun to look at and inspiring, and it reminded me of your saying how you like to anchor outfits w/ black :-)
Here’s the url:

Cheers!
I’d imagine she gets a certain percentage of money from the ads on Chinashop so she needs as many people as possible to click the article. Like the others have said, it’s becoming a turnoff. You’re already selling your podcasts, (and now that the list is so long, it takes up nearly a whole blog page!) books and clothing. You have a link to ask for donations. You have thousands a month coming in from the ads on your site. Don’t you make enough already? I really miss your actual content :(
c — No, I don’t get paid for ads on ChinaShop. It works like any other freelance writing job, where I get paid per piece. & I really enjoy writing for them, it's a fun challenge & change of pace for me :>
We can’t keep Ms. Gala Darling’s wizardry all to ourselves forever, now can we? Greedy nonpareils!
I loved this article! (I would comment on the ChinaShop page but I feel like this comments page needs a lil lurve…) It was a sweet little interview, and Kerin Rose had some awesome things to say: “When you get dressed, get DRESSED. Life is as exciting as you make it!” went immediately onto one of my quote/inspiration cards and rings in my head nearly daily ever since. And I seriously contemplated going into a bedazzling frenzy.
The ChinaShop articles are just Gala with a little more journalistic bent, they’re really no different than the product-enthusiastic posts of Icing.
