American Apparel Reviews
[ 14 May 2007 ]

More things I bought from American Apparel. On top I’m wearing a Sheer Jersey Chemise in Teal (medium), & on the bottom I’m wearing California Fleece Pants in Black (medium).
Now, those of you who recall yesterday’s outfit (here) will remember that I was wearing a “grey” hoodie “dress” from AA. The reason I bought the Sheer Jersey Chemise in a medium was because I thought that if I bought it bigger than I needed, maybe it would be long enough to wear underneath the hoodie dress. I was wrong. This is so short, it only just covers my butt — just like the dress, except not as modest. Very frustrating. It’s also too long to wear as a top, it looks kind of ridiculous & too casual. If I was the sort of girl who liked to rock skinny jeans or show off her thighs in general, then this top would probably be seen outside the house. However, I am not that sort of girl & therefore, it will probably remain in the category of sleepwear.

The pants, however, are another story entirely. I bought a medium because I thought they might shrink in the wash, so I’m waiting to see if that happens. (Good thing they have a drawstring though, or they would fall straight off me.) They’re a really good, straight cut, so they don’t cling to my thighs & make me look lean & sleek. They are SO comfortable, I adore them. They are quite long, so good for tall people. Also, with a pair of heels or wedges they can easily be dressed up. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

good to hear that about the pants; i’ve been eyeing them since my favorite pair of fleece pants (worn as loungewear/pjs!!) are dying (not to mention too big haha). your tatoos are amazing btw!! :)
I’ve been wearing them to bed myself! Actually I find it hard to pry myself out of them, they are fantastic. & thank you! I’m actually thinking about getting the one on my right arm re-done this year by the guy who did the swanboat on my left…
Gala,
What do you recommend for getting over a bad breakup? It seems you would have great advice.

The top is a little big. Maybe if you wore another tank under it to spice it up a bit?
I just discovered this website and have read the entire archive in 2 days, it’s great!!!
I actually think you look really nice in the American Apparel stuff. Your pictures where you wore that hoodie dress looked good too. Is this your first purchase from them? I wonder how their fabrics hold up? Like do they retain their shape/color through many washes or do the clothes fall apart? I’ve bought several things from their store in the past but only in the “baby rib” fabric. I’d love a review of their other fabrics as well.
it is a bit hit-and-miss, isn’t it? they don’t have shops in ireland so i ordered from them a while ago and was totally thrilled with some things (interlock high waisted skirt – ‘sophisticated’ is a stretch, since it is sweatshirt fabric, but i have the asphalt and a kelly green not shown there, and they look good and fit great), and disappointed with others (some of the superfine knit long-sleeved tops, which are a bit shapeless).
their tights are phenomenal, though. i got fixated last year on finding a brand that would last and fit well, and they won by a long shot.
Gala, don’t know if you have tried this already, but with larger tops, I sometimes gather it together at the back and use the glorious invention of the safety pin and pin it up. This normally pulls the top in enough at the waist to look really good, and then there is a cute little pleated look at the back…
The clothes for american apparel are cut very short and small. I don’t mind the small, as I’m very thin. Their x-small is perfect width-wise. Lenght, though, is another thing. I’m a bit over 5’8, so I’m used to wear slightly too short pants and sleeves, but AA is in another category. Dresses and skirts that are said to ‘hit mid-thigh’ actually do not cover my buttocks if I walk. Sleeves are about 3 inches too short for me. The pants’ inseam is about 4 inches too short too. I love their clothes, but I can’t fit into most of them. They designed them with very short women in mind.
I noticed that as the sizes go up, so does the inseam (most brands do not do that noticebly). Maybe they just assumed that if you wore xs, you’re a very short, 5’0 girl?
