Bird Darlings On The Lower East Side

I was recently chosen by Bird by Juicy Couture to be one of their Bird Darlings! I didn’t know much about Bird when I was first approached about it, but Bird is Juicy Couture’s edgy, cool, downtown collection. They partnered with six bloggers to see how they’d style their pieces, & here’s what I came up with!
They seriously sent me the coolest pieces. This faux fur jacket is OFF THE HOOK (& kind of LOOKS like a bird — right? Or am I crazy?) & the leather shorts are parfait — not too short & not too tight, but still sexy & rad.

When I was taking this picture, the superintendent for my building came downstairs & gave me some really puzzled looks. Hahah! He also told me about the giant rats which run out of the basement whenever he opens the door. :( The whole thing made me feel a little uneasy about being down there with bare toes!

Just sitting outside a laundromat. You know… chillin’. This waistcoat is covered in teeny tiny pieces of bronze metal. It’s so heavy! The t-shirt has shredded/reconstructed shoulders, so the sleeves look like wings…

This shrug is major. It’s beautiful but it’s also the sort of piece I wouldn’t normally wear, so it was a little tricky for me to style. I usually avoid shrugs because I have really broad shoulders, & sometimes I feel like they just draw attention to that fact. I think if I was going to do it over again, I’d team it with something really simple, like a black jumpsuit or a very simple dress. It’s super-Liberace though & amazing up close!
I wish I had a better picture of the back of the skirt but it was almost impossible to photograph (black + satin + detail = ?!?!). It’s all satin with fantastic ruffles & a bustle on the back. I love it!
Can we talk about these Dr Marten boots for a second? I bought them online & they arrived on Wednesday — the day before I was due to leave for California. I tried them on & they were quite comfortable, so I decided to take them with me. I wore them all day Thursday, all day Friday, all day Saturday, & all day Sunday… I wore flat motorcycle boots on Monday (for Disneyland), but then went back to wearing them on Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday. Are you kidding me?! You should also know that I do a lot of walking. These boots are seriously comfortable. I was worried that they wouldn’t be, but honestly, I haven’t had a single blister & they don’t rub my feet. They are perfect. I LOVE THEM. New favourite boots for sure. If you were considering buying some, but were on the fence, I say, SNAP ‘EM UP! Before it’s too late! (Limited edition y’all!)

This is my favourite outfit of the bunch. I had been eyeing up this Betsey Johnson cardigan forever but by the time I wanted it, it was sold out. I resorted to trolling eBay in the desperate hope that I would catch a glimpse of it. This popped up on there the other day & I snapped it up toute de suite! Isn’t she a beauty?! It’s so ME with the stripes & skulls & hot pink… I am going to wear the hell out of this in the autumn! It will be so cute over a puffy 1950s dress with a big belt.

...& then there are the shoes. Oh lord, the shoes. I just happened to be in Bergdorf Goodman a couple of months ago, when I realised they were having a shoe sale. This is extremely exciting in & of itself, but then I saw THESE & they were 60% off! I tried them on & they fit perfectly… & with that, I became the proud owner of a pair of Christian Louboutin heels.
I love them so much that they live on my desk, so I can see them all the time.
Finally, Bird had a few questions for me. Here are my answers!
How would you describe your style?
Orchidaceous! Colourful, extravagant, psychedelic ladies who lunch, Gossip Girl on acid. I don’t take it too seriously & I have fun with it!
Who is your fashion icon?
It might come as a surprise, but I love the way Mary-Kate Olsen dresses. She’s really the only celebrity I have any interest in!
If you could have a dinner party with any ten guests, dead or alive, who would they be?
Charles Bukowski, Diana Vreeland, Hunter S. Thompson, Russell Simmons, Vladimir Nabokov, Karl Lagerfeld, Ellen Von Unwerth & Betsey Johnson!
What is the best part of being a fashion blogger?
I think the best thing is that we’re still operating in a really new & undefined area. The opportunities are massive. Companies are so excited about working with bloggers & they have wonderful ideas. I think we’re helping to usher in an amazing new era & there is so much potential!
Favorite Bird piece?
I think it’s an even split between the leather shorts, faux fur jacket & bustle skirt… They’re such fun versatile pieces! I can’t wait to wear the jacket over EVERYTHING, the shorts with black stockings & the bustle skirt for a night out dancing!
What book are you reading?
This great, fully illustrated tome called Sex Is Fun!
Best fashion advice you’ve ever received?
My mother always told me that if you wanted to be remembered, you should wear a hat!
What’s in your handbag?
Pink Filofax, Droid Incredible, sparkly wallet by Deux Lux, photobooth pictures, a glitter-dusted rose hair clip, vitamins & a heart-shaped Winchester padlock.
