Alice in Wonderland statue!

Shortest Carousel ever! Literally! May I attempt to placate you with a photo of myself sitting in Alice’s lap? (This statue is in Central Park & is a must-see if you’re ever in the city.)

<3 Yummy pictures: Edita Vilkeviciute by Solve Sunsbo (dots & stripes & patterns with light!); Olga Sherer is beautiful (NSFW); a lovely cyborg-esque girl by Ruven Afanador; Karen Elson & Steven Meisel in a circus-themed shoot for Vogue Italia, & Clemence Poesy by Ellen Von Unwerth for Lula.

<3 Oh do you know the Fifi Lapin, the Fifi Lapin, the Fifi Lapin? Oh do you know the Fifi Lapin, who lives on Drury Lane? (To be sung to the tune of Do You Know The Muffin Man, of course!) A bunny in the latest designer duds? Count me in!

<3 Guy Kawasaki shares his favourite things from the Maker Faire in San Mateo.

<3 Tina Su is fantastic. She recently left the United States for India, where she was trialing out Tim Ferriss’ “mini-retirement” idea. However, the reality was not all that she dreamed it would be. The Mini-Retirement Misconception is an absolute must-read for anyone who feels like all they want to do is travel! I promise!

Super-love & cupcakes,
Gala <3

  3. Yay, Maker Faire! It was so much fun, but SO CROWDED this year. My feet got stepped on twice (while waiting for the battle bots). Last year it was much less so, but it’s awesome that it’s become so successful.

  4. That article on mini retirements? Love it! Makes me think a little differently about retirement.

    Thanks!

BTW.. I LOVE that you’re in the same country as me! It means I actually get Carousel on Friday instead of Thursday night… If you head towards San Francisco You’ve got friends on the West Coast as well

  5. I was sort of annoyed by the mini-retirement article. Like the whole time I was thinking, “Well duh, that sounds miserable; that’s not at all what I mean by traveling.” Then I got to the end and saw this:

“Have a Purpose on the Trip – Instead of traveling as just a sightseeing tourist, consider staying in one place for an extended period of time to work on a personal or social project.”

That’s more like it. If you are interested in this kind of travel and you’re in the US, check out Volunteers for Peace (http://www.vfp.org). I’ve used their directory and service before and had some amazing adventures.

  9. Oh MY! You’ve found the Alice in Wonderland statue! I don’t know what entrance it’s near, and I live in New York for goodness sake! What entrance did you go in from? :)

  10. The mini-retirement thing was interesting. But I think that the most important thing to remember in that article is this part, hidden at the bottom of the article:

Have a Purpose on the Trip – Instead of traveling as just a sightseeing tourist, consider staying in one place for an extended period of time to work on a personal or social project. This will add more meaning to your trip, and will give you the opportunity to get to know an area and culture beyond the tourist destinations. Some ideas: volunteering to teach at monasteries and schools, volunteering at a charity, take a meditation or yoga class, take a cooking or language or dance class, start a personal art project.

Of course, if you’re just backpacking and tourist-trapping around a country for three months, you’re going to feel awful and you’re going to want to go home. But if you take that time and stay in one place, doing something productive and exciting every day, learning a language and meeting the same people every day, it’s going to be amazing.

  13. After traveling for months, being at home is a relief. I think the feeling is related to why you wanted to find a place of your own to settle in in New York. I know the feeling so well, I can identify with the article too. Nothing like a bed of your own…

  14. vanessa — Yeah, it’s funny how tiring it can be just feeling like you don’t have a place to settle down. I think Simon is feeling that way too, & he’s really looking forward to being back in Melbourne. I think he will be there in the next few hours actually. & living with other people is fun but it’s hard feeling like you always have to tip-toe around them, be considerate, etc. I am an only child & accustomed to being selfish, haha!

  15. The picture with the Alice statue definatly distracts me from the tiny carousel. I LOVE Alice in Wonderland and was so sad that I missed seeing the statue on my trip to NY last summer. It was either see Les Miserables or Central Park-a tough choice for me.

And I am so saving some pictures from the circus theme photo shoot.

  16. ooh, i love fifi-lapin too!
