Carousel -- Week Ending 25th July 2008
[ 25 July 2008 ]
The smallest Carousel ever, perhaps! Made for super-short people, or just those of us with a lot to do! Here we go… Feel free to add anything neat you’ve found to the list!
How to Write With Style by Kurt Vonnegut.
Lagerfeld Discusses His Childhood in a New Documentary. From what I saw in Lagerfeld Confidential, his upbringing sounded fairly dysfunctional. I love me some Karl, though, so I can’t wait! Whee!
On that note, look at Karl Lagerfeld’s Guide To Life, otherwise known as someone-pretending-to-be-Karl-Lagerfeld & blogging about it. It’s funny. I like it.
Welcome To The Jungle. Preach it, Ms Beak!
Oooooh! 10 Most Amazing Ghost Towns (thanks, Dhru!)...
“Its population flourished for decades, with residents building labyrinthine corridors above the street level, which was clogged with trash. The buildings grew so tall that sunlight couldn’t reach the bottom levels and the entire city had to be illuminated with fluorescent lights. It was a place where brothels, casinos, opium dens, cocaine parlors, food courts serving dog meat and secret factories ran unmolested by authorities.”
...From that same site, I also found paper sculptures from single sheets of A4 & 12 funniest fortune cookies. Haha.
Oh! Oh oh oh! I’m so excited! Rachel Zoe’s show is go! I can’t wait to see it.
“Bravo has announced The Rachel Zoe Project, a new reality series starring celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe and her team of fashion experts as they attempt to take their business to the next level, will premiere Monday, September 8 at 11PM ET/PT.”
David Byrne + Dizzee Rascal + censorship = a good time!
That’s it! Damn internet, what’s UP wit choo lately?!
Super-love & cupcakes,
Gala ![]()

Oh yeah, that video is wild!
Project Runway winner Christian Siriano’s collection for Bluefly. Hmmm…

I’ve watched a documentry on Chernobyl before about how the animals have reclaimed the land and still everytime I see that theme park it creeps me out. And the school. Actually, everything. Looks like a setting from I Am Legend or something.
thanks for links Gala, love the video.
Today i bought the PS I Love You soundtrack, which i loveeeeee! On it was a song perfect for this post:
Carousel by Laura Izibor
:)
Short & sweet. Love the first link. Handy.
that video is the funniest! You really can’t miss it, it’s been on mtv non-stop during those last few weeks :-) thanks for lovely links, Gala!
Chernobyl creeps me out as well. but yet i cant help but be fascinated with the place. in fact most of those ghost towns creeped me out!
The how to write with style article is fantastic – thanks :)
I’ve visited Oradour-sur-Glane and I can honestly say it’s the most moving place I’ve ever been to, and not at all creepy. If anyone is ever in that region of France they should definately go.
Ahh I stumbled upon that Vonnegut essay last night and was waiting for carousel to comment with it— freaky!
Oh I do love Carousel!
I have been spending a lot of time on wedding sites recently (some American and some Australian) and on one recently- polkadotbride.com I discovered www.mixwit.com/ where you can make you own mini mix tapes then put them on your blog or site! They are super cute!!!
I loved your first link Gala- helpful to us all I am sure!
Those paper sculptures are ASTONISHING. Oh, to have such skillz.
I liked the how to write with style link.
I read your post from the archives about being a writer for a living, which is earnestly what my soul is DYING for, but so many people try to discourage me! No longer. :) So basically I’ve been devouring information on writing with finesse because nobody can over-hone their craft, right? Thanks Gala!
Gala i’m in love!
wednesday i met a guy who reminds me of you.
not in the super fabulous way but in the totally self-propelled lifestyle
we met at a concert that was composed of very silly bands that just want you to dance and be crazy which he said was right up his alley.
he’s a vegan
doesnt drink
has a whole sleeve of dinosaur tattoos
the only thing i’m having trouble with is that he’s 27 gorgeous and how i didnt lie about my age D: [cough 18…]
oh well it didnt seem to bother him but i think that we shall never see each other again and that part sucks.
I ripped an ad out of a magazine that reminded me of you. Too bad I’m away from home now…but…I believe it was a Quicksilver ad, and the slogan was something along the lines of “when you know who you are, everything else is icing.” How F’ing AMAZING is that?
Loving the list, as always! Keep on rocking!
you should check out dudley town, CT if you’re into exploring haunted thing, it’s close to NYC and supposedly the most haunted place in America
www.ghostvillage.com/legends/d…
the futuristic pod village/resort looks like it would have been so cool to visit!
it’s tragic for me, in a way, to see ghost towns. i hate seeing the wasted potential of a great place to visit & the signs of life from a long time ago. it’s a little depressing. ):
although i do like the feeling mystery that surrounds a place like that !
great post, gala
Gala, if you’ve never read Richard Paul Russo’s “Carlucci” trilogy, PICK IT UP! A vast portion of the stories takes place within the Tenderloin of futuristic San Francisco, which matches (very romantically) that description you quoted of Kowloon walled city.
This town, is coming like a ghost town
All the clubs have been closed down

ah…that fortune cookie reminds me of one i got once (and have saved). it was supposed to say, “you are the master of every situation,” but instead it just says, “you are the mast of every situation.”
lol :D
oh my god, i love david byrne, this has made my day.
Hi Gala! Cute carousel, i love the paper scultures! Some serious creativity there!
We’ve talked a few times, nothing more than a flirtation really. But now I’m asking for some serious help. Maybe not only from you, but whoever else wants to help. sighs I guess I have to explain myself now, seeing as I sound kinda crazy.
I had surgery a week and a half ago, to remove some bone spurs//growths from my hip, because they tore some cartilage and were seriosuly messing up a lot of other stuff in my hip, like tendons, and causing me ridiculous pain. For the surgery, my doctor had to partially dislocate my hip, then disconnect and pull away all muscle, tendons, nerves, etc, to expose my hip socket and femur. Parts of bone were then broken off or sanded//filed off, one of the pieces was reattached with two screws, and then all of the muscle and stuff was reattached. My cartilage that had been seriously torn was then repaired and reattched with 4 metal pieces that are similar to staples. I now have a 5 inch scar on my hip, which will fade over time, but for now i’m on crutches or using a walker for another 5 weeks until I see my doctor again, who will examine my hip again. I came home a few days ago, but i cannot even go into my own bedroom, as it is in the basement, and i’m sleeping//living on the couch in the living room, so im pretty depressed. So I’m asking for help. I don’t want to inconvenience my family more than i am already, but i am bored out of my mind. Do you have any ideas on things to do that will keep me happily occupied (other than your site haha!)? I have my own laptop, but my mobility is limited. I have already made several pairs of earrings, window-shopped online for countless hours at my fav stores, found a cute new pair of shoes (flats!), but i’m running out of ideas for things to do.
I’m sorry that this was so ridiculously long. But I’m hoping you, and maybe other people, will have ideas on how to cheer me up or things i can do?!
Wish you were here babe! xoxoxo big love and cupcakes from Maryland – Kelly
a boy looks at a girl and a girl looks like a pony! that made me laugh
To kelly:
I don’t know what your hobbies are exactly, apart from making earings and I don’t have any ideas for that.
I have a few cool sites and a few interesting sites. You may already know some of them.

www.aldaily.com
www.nataliedee.com

If you have firefox, you can add the ‘stumbleupon’ application, which lets you select which themes you like, and then you click the stumble button to get a different (normally really good sites that others have rated)
ON youtube:
suziblutube – does videos on how to do really pretty mixed medias
I think in your position I’d spend a fair amount of my time online too, there is so much online that you can learn from on pretty much any topic.
I hope I was some sort of use, but if you put your hobbies, maybe I can suggest some more?
okay this is completely irrelevant to your post, (btw I love your blog =)) but I’ve been wondering about this. if the answer is in your FAQ or you think it’s inappropriate then never mind. =)
how many piercings do you have and where? do you still use them?
what is your natural hair colour? =p
thankyou.
keep blogging! I can’t make my day without looking at this site =p
The Welcome to the Jungle story was really cool! Mucho gracias!
at first I thought the video was a rachel zoe commercial… thanks for a few minutes of utter confusion!
Hey Gala, I know this is totally off-topic, but I just suddenly remembered your talking about making the most of your magazines and wondered if you could share your method of tearing out the pages? I’ve had a HUGE stack of magazines for ages now, and have been to afraid of damaging the pages I like to get ‘em out and throw away the rest. I wouldn’t ask, except I’ve searched online and have yet to find a way.
Sorry to be a bother, and keep up the good work! I wouldn’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have your site to turn to at the end of the day. :)
Rachel — Oh my god, that ad sounds amazing & what an AWESOME slogan! I wish I’d thought of it, haha! xx
Kelly — I got your email but I am so behind on it that I never got around to answering it! My suggestion would be to come up with some kind of project. Make mixtapes or write stories or a journal or draw… the good thing is that you have use of your arms & hands, so you’re really free to do anything you’d like!
Hannah — Haha, funny questions! In the past I had my nipples & about five lip piercings (most I ever had was two at once) & a big tunnel in my ear. I’ve let them all close up now though & the only ones in use are just normal ear piercings. My natural hair colour is dark brown — basically the colour of my eyebrows. Hope this sates your curiosity ;D
Trisha — I usually bend the spines back as far as I can & then tear them out gently, but I know a lot of people will use a pen-knife or something similar to slice the pages out. Just go slowly & you should be okay!
Kelly: Ask someone to bring you a huuuuge pile of books, comics and magazines from your local library. Begin to learn a foreign language. Learn to knit. Begin a writing project. Use the time to reflect on your life, your goals etc. Write letters.
Randy Pausche’s Last Lecture: Achieving Your Childhood Dreams is absolutely fantastic, eye-opening and inspriational.

Ooh, GREAT link about the ghost towns! I’d seen the first one somewhere before, but all the other pictures were delightfully new to me!
