Carousel

Hello, Friday! Hello, cake!

<3 Have a read through some of the best stuff on McSweeneys written by women!

<3 Dolce & Gabbana ad campaign, oh my god, so good, the return of the turban except crossed with a head-bow, YES, also scroll down for something scary, The Dish says, “They look like yaks!”. Rad.

<3 Do you belong in NYC? Take the test. Though I have to say, on the last point, I don’t think an interesting life & a happy life are necessarily mutually exclusive.

<3 Astro-Beauty; Legs & Your Past Lives. INTERESTING... or at least I think so!

<3 WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO: Draw yourself at the age of 100! The entries are great.

<3

“When two people meet & fall in love, there’s a sudden rush of magic. Magic is just naturally present then. We tend to feed on that gratuitous magic without striving to make any more. One day we wake up & find that the magic is gone. We hustle to get it back, but by then it’s usually too late, we’ve used it up. What we have to do is work like hell at making additional magic right from the start. It’s hard work, but if we can remember to do it, we greatly improve our chances of making love stay.” — Tom Robbins

<3

<3 Super-rad, super-saturated photos. Thanks, Sri!

<3 My girlfriend Chloe documented the decoration of her new apartment & it’s impressive, she is a clever girl.

<3 365 reasons to party from Everything2.

<3 How To Meet The Most Girls, also from Everything2.

<3 Glamour & Glitter started in March & I really, really like it. Bravo Calla!

<3 I want a copy of this book so badly! It is cute to the max. There are more pictures here. You can buy it through Mulberry or wait for it to hit Amazon.

<3 How to get an entry level job in the creative industries by Rachel Hills.

<3

“I thought, There is nowhere else in the universe I would rather be at this moment. I could count the places I would not rather be. I’ve always wanted to see New Zealand, but I’d rather be here. The majestic ruins of Machu Picchu? I’d rather be here. A hillside in Cuenca, Spain, sipping coffee and watching leaves fall? Not even close. There is nowhere else I could imagine wanting to be besides here in this car, with this girl, on this road, listening to this song. If she breaks my heart, no matter what hell she puts me through, I can say it was worth it, just because of right now. Out the window is a blur and all I can really hear is this girl’s hair flapping in the wind, and maybe if we drive fast enough the universe will lose track of us and forget to stick us somewhere else.” — Rob Sheffield, Love is a Mix Tape

<3

<3 2 Questions To Ask That Are More Important Than A Diagnosis by Dr Frank Lipman.

<3 Stoned wallabies make crop circles. Amazing.

<3 How To Go From Sedentary To Running In Five Steps from Zen Habits.

<3 JAK & JIL does droolable couture like no other. Viz the Balmain jacket on the right, oh my, how delicious, if I owned that I would die happy. & Marjan Pejoski — the man who made Bjork’s swan dress — designed these shoes which make me swoon a whole bunch. Tommy (of JAK & JIL) has also started collaborating with Complex Geometries. I am desperately in love with this tank, aren’t you?

<3 Rachael Gibson knows me well. I want that ring so badly! & did I link to this before? Her Super-Big New York Guide rules. When is she going to come over from London & eat cupcakes with me?!

<3 Nubby was interviewed for M.I.S.S.’ Women Making History segment & it’s fantastic. Yay!

<3 Jane from Sea Of Shoes is in Tokyo right now, look at her pictures! Also, she just designed a capsule shoe collection for Urban Outfitters. Go Jane!

<3 Also, if David Bowie had wheels, how much would you pay to ride on him?

<3

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think of, say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, & that is our attitude… I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me & 90% how I react to it. & so it is with you… we are in charge of our attitudes.” — Charles Swindoll

<3

I love you Dame Darcy!

<3

Did you know they’re remaking this with Russell Brand?!
I like Russell very much, I actually think it will be brilliant.

<3

Wow.

Michael Jackson

Finally… lots of love to Michael Jackson, his friends, family & fans. I’m really sad to hear about his passing — he had a huge impact on me, & I have always adored him & thought of him as a complete musical genius. I also always defended him to my friends who said he was “weird” — the best people are! I had a little MJ dance party last night in tribute & I hope you did too. Writing Songs With My Friend, Mike is beautiful.

Love letters & feather headdresses,

  2. wow, that first entry on the “how to meet the most girls” entry was just awful in my opinion! the second one was much better & more interesting :)

  3. I loooove that Tom Robbins quote! (Possibly because love and magic are two of my favorite words.)

Lovely and respectful tribute to MJ at the end, too. Happy weekend, Gala!

  6. e: Agreed!! That guy is a muppet

“You should avoid tattoos and body piercings at all cost.”

“Lastly, you should try your hardest to put yourself into a natural alpha male role. This may require completely changing your group of friends, but it will be worth it.”

    riiiiiiiiight…..

  7. Delicious carousel!

That sex bomb skater is so sexy! I loved the commentators, totally made my night.

Also, that quote about attitude from Swindoll, I’ve been hearing that around the place and I have to say I fully agree with it. How you approach a day, changes it.

As for the sex bomb skater…isnt he just wearing a muscle suit? Just cos on the last close up clip at the end his neck has a seam :-S

  11. Oh G-berry don’t you wish you’d got to go on that blind date with Dame Darcy instead of the totally unappreciative Michael? She was a MERMAID for god’s sake!

  18. My brother was upset by the news of Michaels passing…yet was somehow able to make jokes about it. That is the kind of odd person my older brother is…

Anyways, I was going through all my music and paused at the large selection of Styx music. Started thinking about the concert video my parents got my me when i was 8 (back in 1996). I just couldn’t stop myself from youtube-ing that concert video. It was amazing then, and its amazing now.

Sorry if this seems inappropriate. I figured we were talking about backs and music that has influenced us (never personally been a big fan of Michael, but I do like some of the things Weird Al did.._)

  20. Am I the only one who thinks those models from the Dolce and G. shooting are WAY TOO SKINNY!!????? I hate how women are portrait in our society these days, it`s disgusting me!! Don`t you all see that this “Who is the thinnest” craze is just another mean to suppress us women? Its a huge backwards step in emancipation and many women are so blind and don`t even see that, no instead they support this craze by buying things from such designers! That is just very, very sad.

  25. I’m usually not a huge fan of D&G ad campaigns/shoots (too cluttered and weird for my tastes). But I like this one—it’s a great balance of beautiful and bizarre (sorry to alliterate). So much detail—and those hats/headpieces and shoulders are to die for. Thanks for sharing!

  34. Hahaha, Dame Darcy’s blind date :) So cute.
The Dolce & Gabbana is to die for! I adore the Marilyn items… I could totally see myself wearing her face on my skirt with geek glasses & a pink wool sweater :D :D :D
& How cute is Chloe?? TOO cute!

Oh gosh, MJ… I was so shocked when I found out, ugh. Couldn’t believe it. I think part of us thinks that celebrities will live forever, since we seem to measure time with who was a big-wig singer, celebrity, etc. Like you think the 90s? Boy bands, Britney Spears, Dido, etc. Ya know? Its so weird when they fade out or die… xoxo

  35. Tom Robbins is a genius. Also I think I was more upset about Farrah Fawcett than MJ but then again I always thought he was guilty. I’m actually surprised he lived as long as he did. 50 years must be some kind of record for a leading musician.

  38. While i was devastated by the loss of MJ, it was inspiring to experience the worldwide celebration of his work ever since that tragic day. It is true, some of the greatest minds of all time were weirdos, and while Michael was one of the weirdest, he’ll be remembered for being the greatest!
I went out dancing the night after, and ended up at the gay bar (my first time there!) and danced the night away to some of Michael’s finest! It was a magical night, a celebration of all things Michael!

I love the Rob Sheffield quote. It sums up how I feel when I’m with my amazing boyfriend.
    Sigh…. I love love!

How sad is Michael Jackson’s death? it was so sudden!

he was my childhood hero. i used to defend him and listen to him 24/7 since i was 8(but stopped several years ago!) and have lost many friends over him!

haha. i was a bit extreme. he’s an amazing dancer and singer with an amazing gift. he will be missed in Australia! RIP

  50. Howdy!

Someone sent me here when they saw the Blind Date episode linked.

Twas I who was on the infamous Dame Darcy date lo those many moons ago. I’m glad to see it’s made it to YouTube now. Well, maybe not glad persay. There are oodles and oodles of stories about that adventure (we actually got along quite well, especially after she was drunk and not overcompensating as much, and we knew many of the same people), which I should probably post and pass around sometime. We met again at a Golden Apple event (well, Bill forced us together, I should say), and she thought I was mad at her cause of the ebola line. Oops.
