Here are some of the best things I’ve found while trawling the internet this week. Enjoy!
Ask The Readers: Best Off-The-Wall Productivity Tips from Zenhabits. The most exciting thing to me is how many of the comments are about letting go of expectation, being present, & just allowing your work to flow. We are living in an amazing time, you know?
Sera Beak, who I wrote about a few days ago, wrote this piece, Beauty-Full, at the start of the month. It’s about how much value we put on our appearance, & about replacing untrue messages in our own minds with truth! It’s a really good read, & in fact, it is what convinced me to go & see her speak.
The Potent Quotables section of Spinner.com is hilarious. It’s basically collection of the most unusual, inflammatory or just plain remarkable quotes from celebrities. For example,
“There are a limited amount of years where you can wear tight jeans. There comes a point where whether you can or not, you shouldn’t.” — Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots)
“We met the Pussycat Dolls. They were really… hot. I was going to say ‘nice,’ but the first thing I noticed was that they were hot.” — Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords)
Mmmm, plastic people by Eugenio Recuenco!
20 Weird English Words from The List Universe. Erinaceous! Finnimbrun! Inaniloquent! MUNGO! I love it! Rock out with your pleonastic self!
On that note, How’s Your Vocabulary?
Also from The List Universe: Top 10 Weird Al Yankovic Songs, Top 20 Cool Facts About New Zealand (hee!), Top 10 Bizarre Artworks (I’ve seen the first two!) & Top 10 Bizarre Mustaches! (I love moustaches, if I was a man I would grow a HUGE one!)
Relationships – True Love and the Transcendence of Duality from Eckhart Tolle. I thought this was interesting to the point of obscenity! I love Eckhart’s words & thoughts, they make my brain spin in a good way.
Here’s a video of Patricia Field being interviewed by Amanda Miller on ABC news.
On the subject of Patricia Field, my cupcake dress — the one I wore to the Louis Vuitton preview — is now for sale on the Patricia Field website! (& it comes in blue, too!)
Blue is the colour if you have mental illness... apparently!
Dhrumil says, Stop playing into conspiracy theories & take real action — & I couldn’t agree more.
If you’re a fan of those quiet early hours, this sweet new Livejournal community, ofmornings, might just be your cup of tea.
I recently discovered garance doré, a new street-style site from France. The pictures are gorgeous. I like to read the words out loud to myself — speaking in French, I think, is one of life’s greatly underestimated pleasures — & then squint & ponder & try to decode it. Good practice!
Time to kill? Check out The Daily Meme for surveys out the wazoo.
Now that Twitter appears to have bitten the dust, I think Plurk is the only sane option. Sign up, & add me!

spinnin’ around…..with a big fat gElatO inhand
i have an infatuation for breakfast! what a wonderful community.
Oooh I love unusual words…my favourite one at the moment is prepossessing.
I just have to say how freaking uncanny it is that you posted that Bat for Lashes video… just last week a friend of mine insisted that I look it up on YouTube. Strange.
I really enjoy the tune, but the plushies in the video scare me!
My sister is getting married and moving to paris next year, I?ll keep an eye on that french site! maybe i’ll see her there someday!
hey and it’s great that you hired an assistant!
Lot’s of love to her too!
I love Garance Doré‘s drawings, they’re almost better than her streetsyle pictures. By the way, do you know of Café Mode and The Cherry Blossom Girl? Also French, also great!

Speaking of communities on Livejournal, maybe you’d like some of these!!:
Curious Cupcakes: A cute cupcake community!
community.livejournal.com/curi…
Cupcakes Take The Cake: This one’s on blogspot, but I loveeee seeing their posts in my RSS feed! LOVELY cupcakes! I think I’ve seen vegan cupcakes here, too! Check it out!
cupcakestakethecake.blogspot.c…
Giving Ideas: LJers show their homemade gifts as well as share ideas for gifts! I love looking through this around holidays! Check out the memories, there are tons of adorable posts, &lots of talented people!
community.livejournal.com/givi…
JR_NAL: Members of this community post pictures of their art journals. Lots of pretty posts, here! Many members use moleskines, but there are some exceptions.
community.livejournal.com/jr_n…
Oh No They Didn’t!: Perhaps you already browse this one! Heh. Celebrity Gossip, photos, etc. “The celebrities are disposable, the content is priceless”
Raptamakeout: Artists/Photographers/Etc. share their work here. LOTS of good stuff! Only downside is, that mods take awhile to approve posts, so they all seem to come at once! :/
Apologies if you’ve seen any of these before, but just thought I’d share!! :]
They should totally have you modeling for Patricia Field instead! I loved it when I first saw it on you, but I know I wouldn’t be feelin’ it nearly as much if the site was the first I had seen it, hee.
another link, which you might enjoy.
sfkorean.com/servlet/JMBoard?t…
its a really long link, sorry. D:
its a video on some women and how makeup changes their whole appearance. i love it.
unfortunately, they only speak in korean, but its still hilarious [ to me]
Gala –
Interesting, that Sera Beak is! Her “beauty” beliefs made me think about the way the idea of beauty was ingrained in the modern woman in the flapper era. (I’ve been reading Flapper by Joshua Zeitz) – it gives a great insight into how the New Woman became obsessed with fashion, appearance, being slim and covering flaws because of the way they saw their mirrored reflections (with the help of the psychological effects of advertising).
Beak’s article made me wonder – could you go without a mirror for a day? A week? Would you feel more beautiful if you couldn’t see yourself? If Beak never had seen her reflection, would the wound on her face trigger panic over her “False beliefs”?
Kinda makes you wonder…
yes, garance doré is a favorite website. it’s on my google reader. a beautiful slice of life from Paris.
ooh that plurk thing, it’s quite addicting!
also, i’m glad to say i got an a on the vocabulary quiz. hee.
Yay! I love the list universe! I prefer their lists about unusual events and evil people though.
Aah Bat For Lashes! ♥♥♥ I was introduced to them through that very song by a friend who told me, “If you were a music video, this would be it.”
& I think from now on I’ll be listing my favorite color as “schizophrenia green”. . .
That’s so funny you used that image from lush bella. I had just added it to my favorites the other day.
I love the Bat For Lashes song and video! It’s good in such a creepy way.
Have a good weekend!
Luv
Poochie
what’s that about twitter?
You always find some interesting articles to read. Thank you!
And also Gala, do you speak French? I’ve been taking it for two years and I am nervous about my pronunciation. I heard the French are really sticklers about that! Maybe its just a rumor..!
AHH Bat For Lashes! Lovely, lovely music! And I love Natasha Khan; she seems just..‘delightful’! Very imaginative and stylish in an eccentric, playful way :)
I know someone whose name is Mungo (given name, not a nick name)...I wonder if he knows that it means ‘dumpster diver’? I’ll have to ask.
I just read the 20 Cool Facts about NZ. Funny how #8 completely contradicts #4.
I am confused about that dress! Didn’t you say you bought it from somewhere that wasn’t Patricia Field? If sooooooo, how come she is selling it on her site if it’s not her design?! And was it a coincidence that you happened to wear it to her party and she put it on her site?!
Questions questions!
I added you to Plurk!
The mental illness study is quite interesting…
However, I think that only conducting it with inpatients is a little biased. I know that when I was an inpatient my “favourite” colour would have probably been blue also… seeing as that was exactly how I was feeling!
(my actual favourite colour is green by the way!)
I think a much better representation could be done if they included the opinions of both in & outpatients, and maybe also if anyone changed their preference once being discharged…
I also had a look around the net to see if any colour studies have been done on a more wide range of people, but couldn’t really find anything… it would be interesting to have a read though!!
Thanks for sharing the article, Gala! :)
flight of the conchords is my new obsession, first thing that’s really made me laugh out loud by myself in ages! i had my finals this week & i would get one essay question done & then watch an episode for motivation to continue…haha
i was tryng to download some of their songs to bring it in & dance to it at work, so i went to their myspace. just today. & look what i found:
viewmorepics.myspace.com/index…
jemaine looks sorta scary/embarassed! lol
I love that bat for lashes song, it’s so haunting and awesome!
okay, the link didn’t work…
but i put it on my photobucket because you need to see it:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v41/gwennabat/l_6c3f4675a23e5a6ab2bdc04a45da6232.jpg
oh heeeellllll no!
amish paradise is totally the NUMBER ONE weird al song!
Thanks so much for the French fashion link! I’ll be abroad next year in France, so I’m psyched about getting some ideas to prepare my wardrobe…without losing my personal touches, of course. : )
awww. i love bat for lashes!!
I love Flight of the Conchords! I think their song Jenny is my favorite.
In fact, I think I’ll go watch it now… :)
Candace — Yeah! My assistant (oh my god, it still sounds so weird saying that!) showed it to me earlier this week & I was like, “Argh, that’s so cool!”
onchino — I’ve met Rachel Kramer Bussel from Cupcakes Take The Cake, & a lot of those communities are ones I’ve watched in the past or still look in on occasionally. But they’re all good! Thank you for the links :D
Elizabeth — Aw, you’re too kind! I’ll tell Pat next time I see her ;D
Birdie! — Absolutely! That’s why I linked it up, I thought it was really interesting & I loved the way she switched her beliefs around. Very cool, very liberating.
Sara — I studied it for a few years in school & really enjoyed it, but I don’t think I’m any good. Actually, I think my pronunciation is good, but my memory of the language is pretty poor. That’s just what happens when you don’t practice, I guess!
Rachel Radness! — Oh my god, that photo of them with the Pussycat Dolls is hilarious! They look SO awkward! It’s perfect. Oh, & re: Weird Al? I think White & Nerdy is my favourite…
kitten` — Yup, I bought the dress from a bargain shopping place. The PF boutique is full of stuff from different brands, & evidently they buy from the same place this shop did! So I bought it, showed it to my friend who works at PF, & then a couple of days later she was like, “We’re selling that dress now!” Pretty funny, & total coincidence :> I didn’t wear it to her party though, I wore it to the Louis Vuitton preview! I wore a dress from Ricochet (NZ) with Disney ears to her party ;D
Ariel — Such a great show!
Gala, In Tolle’s piece on ego and love, I got a pretty anti-love vibe from him, but I’m sure its because I’m not understanding. Help from Gala or nonpareils?
i signed up for plurk but it really annoyed me… i hate the stupid side-scrolly layout and the way you have to earn ‘karma’ in order to be able to customise things. i must be able to customise everything! such a pity that twitter keeps pooping itself though, because i’m addicted :p
also i’m loving the ‘ofmornings’ community… i’ve decided i need to start making more out of my mornings instead of sleeping in too late, so hopefully this will be good motivation!
“There are a limited amount of years where you can wear tight jeans. There comes a point where whether you can or not, you shouldn’t.” — Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots)
But… But… Scott…
Listen to your own advice, dear. Really.
Lies lies from tiny eyes. Hahaha!!
oooh, i’m going to see bat for lashes sup[port radiohead tomorrow! eeeeeeeee! excited! mgmt are there too, it’s going to be awesome.
Sara: Don’t fret over your pronunciation! Most French people speak a terrible English, and they’ll be glad that YOU made the effort to learn our language (instead of assuming that oh, everybody speaks English, don’t they, why should I bother with a foreign language?). This from a French girl (Parisian, even)!
I felt that Eckhart Tolle article only confirmed my thoughts about love and relationships, that mostly there only there to fill a big gaping hole. The sentence “the person that had been singled out and made special – who you thought would ultimately “save you.” Suddenly love turns to hate.” I felt truly spoke to me.
I’ve always thought that you will only ever find a true companion when your in the right place at the right time and that there is really a right person for that point in time. If you work on yourself and make yourself good and whole instead of running away you’ll find someone amazing.
Thank you for posting this, it sent my light bulbs in my head completely off!
That Bat For Lashes video is amaaaaaze!!
i love her
Thanks for clarifying hehe! I thought she just sold her own brand of clothing.
I love that ‘ofmornings’ link too. It’s swooooony. I’m going to look at it often and try to become one of these fabled morning people.
I really do think we should make Mungo the new boho-chic word. =]
As long as you’re testing your vocabulary, you could also go here:
www.freerice.com/index.php
:)
I’m loving the fun stuff on the Patricia Field website—and I’m curious about the darling suspenders. I’ve been thinking about how cute they are for some time, but I can’t really think of how I could wear them without looking like a clown. Gala, I bet you can think of a way!
oh yes Batopus, freerice is a great website :D
Wait…Twitter’s bitten the dust? I was just getting ready to finally cave in and sign up…what’s the deal?
[also, mmmm, I love me some vocab!
Hi Gala.
I’ve asked several people the same question and I’ve gotten nothing helpful(I didn’t tell them that though, they’re just trying to help) so far because nobody really seems to know!
I’m moving out of my parents home and to another town soon and my goal is August 20 but I’ve got 3 major things to do before I can. 1) Pay off my laptop 2) Raise up a good down payment for a new car(sold the Oldsmobile) and 3) Find a new job before moving to the new city. I’ve already paid most of my laptop off in less than 2 weeks so I’m doing better than I thought. The issue is, how do I make more money faster? I’ve already had a garage sale, sold some clothes to re-sale shops, asked for more hrs at work, and made a spending budget but I’m still afraid I wont meet my deadline. Online surveys don’t work and I can’t blog and make money. lol Are there any other resourceful ways to gain a little extra cash?
