  1. That Fashionese article was hilarious!

  2. those photos of dita are stunning(!!), but i do get annoyed with the way that, every time she pops up looking gorgeous, people make comments about manson making a mistake, or kicking himself. there are more important things to a relationship than the way someone looks, right?!

& those collages are beautiful! i’m inspired to whip out my moleskine & start a-pasting…

  3. annaloren — Yeah, good point actually. I guess I think it’s sad that they didn’t work out, since I think their romance gave hope to a lot of ‘weird’ types. Do you know what I mean? Obviously they had problems that couldn’t be sorted out, or they were too different in outlook & lifestyle (which would be my guess). & I guess, also, I’m kind of mad at him for making that Heart-Shaped Glasses video since it seemed unnecessarily cruel & petty. :\

  4. Gala, I love you!!! OK that just slipped out! But I love that you posted the link to the No Impact Man article. :) :) Thanks

  5. I heart Dita. I have always loved pin up girls and she is the pure essence of a modern day pin up.

That staying motivated article was great – you have a knack for finding just what I need!

    Happy Friday.

  6. are you a vegetarian or vegan, gala?

    <3 emily · Sep 1, 08:47 AM · #
  7. Lou — Awwhhh gee. You’re a cutie!

Song — Happy Friday indeed! (I don’t really give myself a weekend, I am a slave driver!)

emily — Neither. I am a shameful meatmouth! I was vegan for a couple of years before visiting America & having to eat beef jerky (ewwwwww) at Burning Man so I didn’t pass out :< Bad.

  8. thank you thank you thank you for the link to “how to have an intersteing life”

  9. I love Dita Von Teese; She always looks so amazing!
And thank you for the article on eating less meat helping the enviroment. I’m a vegetarian, and every time I tell someone that I am they start on a rant about how one person alone can’t really save any animals so I may as well give up!
But now I have even more reasons to be meat-free! :]

  10. I lovelovelove the before & after New York photos!
I’m trying that in my own little way here in London (only a little because I rather liked my style before as well!) and have been buying things which push my bounderies (like a tiara-ish headband and a grey silk Lipsy dress) and have been using other Londoners (and you!) as inspiration.

I just need a fabulous hair style now.

  11. Gala that is too bad about the jerky! Was it that good?? :) I consider myself an extremely privileged vegan. All of these wonderful stores and farmer’s markets right under my nose! It is a piece of cake. Delicious vegan cake. Hah.
Miri- People use that argument against me too. “You are only one person. You can’t make a difference!” Really it makes me want to cry. It is such a horrible way to see things. I say, “OK, what if people said that as an argument against everything?” This would be an awful world if one person did not think that she could make a difference. Nothing would ever change!

  14. Gala, I read your site almost daily, and am both surprised and completely chuffed to see you link to A List Apart. (Which I, er, edit.)

Thanks for all the great posts, and for the plug.

  15. Miri — I know what it’s like to have people constantly berating you for not eating animal products. It is SO ridiculous & it made me really angry all the time. It’s not anyone else’s business & isn’t it OBVIOUS that avoiding meat is a good thing? Argh! So I thought I’d give my vegetarian/vegan readers some encouragement!

Sarah-Rose — Make sure you have pictures! We want a time-lapse series of how big city livin’ has changed you!

Lou — The jerky was disgusting. My boyfriend had to feed it into the side of my mouth so I couldn’t see it. It is so ugly & revolting. UGH. If I was staying in an RV I probably could have had fresh fruit & vegies & tofu all week, but I was in a tent & nowhere near that organised!

Lunita — Awhhh! Yay! I love your collages, I think they are fantastic. Thank you so much!

Erin — Oh! Wow! Good job honey :D

  16. one of my mini life goals is to be stopped on the street by the sartorialist. although at first glance i was wow-ed by Kara’s NYC evolution, I was a little bummed by the fact that she looks classier, more haute couture, and less friendly. Her before photo was inspirational in a stop-her-on-the-street to ask “where are your boots from?!” sort of way. Her after photo is inspirational in an “I’ll never be that…” sort of way. Which is my personal opinion, of course.

But who knows, maybe I’ll be wearing Chloe sandals the day the Sartorialist stops me!

  17. My mother took a trailer this year to BM! She was really excited about not staying in a tent. The last few times the wind completely destroyed it (not sure of the details) by the end. I’ve never been, however! Just heard all the stories… ;)

  18. Thanks for the link… a lot of people have been checking out my site because of it.

I don’t really know what your site is about, but the design is fantastic!

  20. I just read the Skinny Bitch review but it’s a pretty old so I thought I’d comment here. I’m sure I’ll garner some smite for this, but veganism is my pet peeve. If it’s for health reasons, and you can stand the difficulties created in eating out and at family events, go for your life. I’ve reduced my own intake of red meat for health benefits, and I support organic and free-range farming. However, it’s the high-and-mighty moral vegans that really drive me nuts.

First off, if you (not YOU, Gala, just in general) think that that meat industry is going to notice one iota that you’ve stopped eating meat, you’re dreaming. The meat-eating population is enormous and not one less cow / pig / chicken is going to die this year because you gave up meat.

Secondly, the hypocrisy infuriates me. Moral vegans cry over the exploitation of animals, yet often engage in acts that support the degradation of human beings — watching porn, buying things made in China, supporting abortion (certainly I am guilty of the last two, but I’m not a vegan). If you’re going to put all this energy and thought into something, I personally think it should go into improving the lives of people before you turn your attention to animals.

Third, where does it end? Obviously no meat, poultry, dairy, fish, leather, wool, gelatine — what about red food colouring (made from beetles?) Silk (do silk worms matter?) Shampoos and conditioners sometimes have animal by-products in them. Are you going to support PETA, that attempt to blow up the labs, family homes, and vehicles of scientists, even though they have a few animal cruelty skeletons in their own closet? (http://www.thisistrue.com/peta.html)

Anyway, that’s my rant. Smite me if you must. But donate your time and money to helping less fortunate people, and you’ll actually see a positive, measurable outcome for your efforts.

  21. mischief — Saying that veganism makes no impact on the environment is like saying that smiling at strangers makes no impact on humanity. It doesn’t have to change the world, but it is awesome to know that YOU are doing the right thing, whether other people or not.

I am going raw & vegan for health reasons, & while I have never been a militant vegan, those questions you raised are easily answered. Beetle colouring is easily avoided — it’s always listed on food packaging. Silk is easily avoided too, & there are specific vegan-approved shampoos, toothpastes etc. I have never supported PETA & most vegans I know don’t either, they think they are an appalling organisation.

I also don’t think, as you said in your last paragraph, that veganism needs to be either or, like “either be vegan or go help a charity”. I know that I am doing good things for the world by writing on this website every day — as ridiculous as it sounds, it’s actually changing thousands of people’s lives. Not to mention, going vegan is amazingly good for the environment — which contributes to the longevity of humankind in general.

  22. Though, I would add that high & mighty, self-righteous ANYONE is annoying ;D

    <3 Gala · Jan 18, 04:32 AM · #
  23. Hmm, didn’t say anything about veganism and human charity as either / or: just that if you are going to devote time and energy in one direction only, as some people do, I personally feel that human suffering is more worthy.

Anyway, I do think the tone of your response could have been more measured. I thought you would support the expression of opinions from either side, not just those that agree with veganism. And that last comment was rather snarky. However, it’s your blog to do with what you wish. Good luck to you!

    <3 mischief · Jan 18, 04:49 AM · #
  24. mischief — Eep! I actually responded to you with a really light heart & no anguish or anything, but I just woke up & haven’t taken my vitamins so maybe I sound grumpier than usual!

The last comment wasn’t actually directed at you, sorry if it came across that way. It’s more than anyone who is all “la la la veganism” or “la la la religion” or “la la la insert cause here“ is irritating. I agree with you wholeheartedly on that point, & I don’t like self-righteous vegans freaking out either!

    <3 Gala · Jan 18, 04:58 AM · #
  25. Just my 2 cents, most people can help themselves but animals are pretty much powerless to do so.
