Daily Outfit -- 27th August 2007
[ 27 August 2007 ]

Today is the first day of Burning Man, & I am not there. To alleviate some of the anguish I feel, I decided to dress like I was there.

Bikini top (Ebay)
Lip Service dome skirt (with Hello Kitty telescope & handcuffs hanging from the D rings)
Blue legwarmers
Platform New Rock boots
Pearls, Tarina Tarantino rings, weird doll ring, diamante-studded heart which scrolls programmable messages (!), robot earring
Blue fluffy hat (right image)

Even better: with the sneaky addition of a t-shirt & subtraction of a fluffy hat, I go from playa to pedestrian. Fabulous.
Super-love & cupcakes,
Gala ![]()

you’re so colourful! what did you make the heart say?
Gala
Do you think Burning Man has gotten away from its origins and is now to commercialized and potentially filled with “posers”?
It is like the gentrification/massification of unique neighborhoods and quirky shopping districts. It makes me a little sad and I worry that it has happened in another place.
I’ve never been so I’d love your take on it.

I would kill for your stomach.
And I’d have to kill – I am way too undisciplined to keep to any kind of routine when it comes to crunches. I think three days in a row is the longest I’ve stuck to any exercise program.
jess — I haven’t really used it since BM last year, but I think it said something ridiculous like “gangsta gangsta”, hahah!
Poochie — I don’t know. I don’t like the term “poser” because it insinuates that there are people who are “less” than us because they’re trying too hard, or something… it doesn’t sit well with me. I think BM is a great event, in that it is a lot of fun & is always challenging in its own way. It’s not like going to a music festival where it rains & everyone wears gumboots — it is a truly strenuous, crazy, overwhelming, maniacal mindf#ck. Going there is hard work for the brain as well as the body, it always changes your life in some way. I think anyone who goes along is brave & that’s to be commended. In terms of it becoming ‘commercialised’, I don’t think it has. It has gained popularity, of course, all the good things do. But it’s still a place where no advertising is allowed, no one sells anything (except coffee & ice), etc. (To indicate how strenuously anti-advertising they are, if you hire a truck or trailer, you are required to cover the signage on it.) I know some people are disillusioned with the event but everyone is different & has their own reasons… I am keen to go back, that’s really all I can say!
Song — It’s hard to commit to a routine when there is no real reason for having one in place. Do you know what I mean? I’m sure that if someone said they would cut off your toes if you don’t tone it up, then you’d do it. Really, you need to create a reason… otherwise it won’t happen. The best reason for toning up is because you’re enjoying the exercise, so I’d suggest finding something which works for you. I am bad, I don’t do any exercise because I haven’t really found anything I like. But I start pole-dancing classes on Thursday (!!!) & I hope I end up being super-toned & sleek etc.!
You guys have burning man!? I didn’t know that….though I don’t know that you’d be apropriatly dressed for burning man here. Its a massive hippie fest…and its in the very very hot burning desert. Hense the reason I’ve yet to go. Too fair skined and oy how I hate the sun screen.
Flutterby — No, we don’t, I’m talking about the “massive hippie fest” in Nevada which I went to last year :P & also, that’s what I wore most of the time!
So many cool toys – doll ring! Programmable flashing heart!!! Handcuffs! I am so after some of those – our dance group is performing to Gwen’s Sweet Escape wearing black/white jailbird stripes; handcuffs (two on one wrist) would just set the whole thing off nicely, but the rest of them remain unconvinced. Sigh.
totally off the subject, but your cosmo issue is out in new zealand now :)
Nadine — Man, what party poopers… !
sarah — Oh, I know! I spoke to my mother this morning & she told me she’d bought a copy :> I am still amazed at the lead time between its release in Australia & NZ! Nutty!
My God!!! Its official I’m in LOVE with that tee!!! so HOT!!!
Wow! I love your quirky outfits!
In particular your black skirt!
Where did you buy it? And dos it come with the cuffs or did you accessorize it yourself? =P
Thanks Gala,
I hope I did not offend with “posers”. I think it sounds… interesting. What I meant were people who go there to show off and not be authentic.
Even as a person in advertising, I’m glad they limit it. I sometimes get so frustrated when things become saturated with ads, etc. I just want to yell: “Hey, leave something alone already!”
Thanks
Poochie
You’re so lovely. Thank you for the impromptu bagel catch-up! Seeing you and Simon made me feel so much better. :)
atlas2020 — Me toooo! It’s so comfortable, the fabric is great & it’s the perfect length!
wyend — Thank you! I bought the skirt from a shop in New Zealand but the brand is Lip Service, they do lots of goth/punk/fetish kind of stuff. It was cheap too, about $50 NZ on sale. I added the cuffs ;D
Poochie — No offence taken! It’s just a difficult word to base a statement around, since the definition varies so wildly. Really, I think there are inauthentic people all over the place, & I didn’t get the impression that there were more of them at BM than on the street, for example. Actually, I think your average BM attendee (with the exception of the few frat guys who go) is pretty cool — open-minded, friendly, thoughtful & fun-loving. If you think it sounds interesting, phew! You’re right, but if you go along, your mind will be blown :D It is an amazing experience, really I think the experience of a lifetime, & even if you HATED it, you’d learn a lot about yourself & it would be worth doing. Oh, & if you’re interested, Halcyon (pink-haired awesome person) made a great video about Burning Man last year which is worth viewing: http://www.veoh.com/videos/v476586EGPjAKt8 !
Nadia — Much love to you! Kiss kiss! I’m glad I saw you, I was thinking about coming over to visit you when I saw Simon talking to you!
I adore the 4th photo.
(Well, all of them. But the 4th is my fave!!)
I’m still on the hunt for the pink lilos.
Apparently they are hard to come by at the “end” of summer. Blargh. =[
I love your new short bangs. You said they make you look young, but I think they suit you beautifully and go with the color of your hair. Old people don’t usually have pink hair, and you’re young, and your bangs look young, and it’s perfect. And you’re perfectly adorable!
Jamie — Thank you honey! & don’t sweat it about the lilo! Just the idea that you would like to send me one makes me go all rubbery-kneed! :D
Aw, Miss Julie! That is really sweet. I’m going on a photoshoot tomorrow (so exciting!) & I’m not sure what I’m going to do with them… maybe I’ll do a little pomp…
The photo with the fuzzy hat is very tank girl :-D
Hey Gala! I realize that I am just an faceless unknown posting person, but I’ve been a fan of the blog for a long time, but have just been too shy to post. But I have a question!
I love that you changed your name to something uniquely and exsquisitly you, (as you said in your next post), so I was wondering. When you do attend Burning man, do you have a playa name, or are you simply Gala, because thats who you are without an alter ego?
I have an endless facination with names and alter egos, so was wondering!
rockin! both the pedestrian style and the more over-the-top one =)
also, I think your fringe is looking fabuloud, darling!
i had a dream about burning man last night! i’m so sad i couldn’t go, but i’m making it a mission to go next year and you should too. :)
Next spring/summer, as soon as they’re back in stores, I’m gonna snatch up one just for you!!
Lissa — Why, thank you!
Cameron — Well, that whole “on the playa, I’m Princess Sparkle!” thing kind of rubs me the wrong way. I think there are quite a few people who attend BM (& are fanatical about it) because everything else in their life is crap, & it’s a chance to escape that. So they adopt this phony name & everything is okay for a week, & then they go back to the grindstone. Well… you might have noticed, but I don’t live my life like that! So I never felt the need for a “playa name”. I just went by Gala :>
rachel — I am planning on spending a fair chunk of time in the States next year, so Burning Man will fit nicely into my plans, I think!
Jamie — Thanks sweetie! ;D
Wahh, I loooove both of these looks! The doll ring is amazing :D I had a pin brooch that was similar to that ring, but the legs of the doll fell out xD so now I have only the torso!
The fourth photo is really cute :)
Hey Gala,
Awesome blog, I also wanted to let you know that I linked to you and soon enough I will be writing about fashion blogs how what where etc. More like blog tips. So if you get time to stop by I would appreciate that.
Have a good day!
Aww, did you see some guy set the burning man on fire? What a party pooper!
Kat! — I saw that! I watched a video on it, in fact. My boyfriend told me that someone attempts to burn it early EVERY year. Psshhh. Lame!
Do you EVER have a fashion faux pas?
Robin — Oh, you sweet thing. All the time!!
i love love love thissss. its so adventurous and smoking =D
where on earth did you get that doll ring?
its fabulous!
