Hoop Mania!

Okay, everyone who follows me on Twitter is probably aware that I have been hooping almost constantly for the last 3 days. (2 hours on Sunday, 3 hours on Monday, 2 hours so far today.) I am really obsessed! I can hoop to entire songs without the hoop falling down! AMAZING!
I am having so much fun with this $6 piece of plastic. I think it might even be a child’s hoop, but I am totally beyond caring. It is kind of all I can think about right now, even though I know I should be organising things (I’m going to Auckland tomorrow & will be there until Monday)!
Next step? Tricks. Major silliness. More internal bruising of my abdominals. Sparkly holographic hoops. Oh yes!

Aaaaaah hula hoops!
I used to rock at that as a kid.
I picked up at the shops yesterday, I could only hoop for like 30 seconds without it falling to the ground.

Love it! I always loved hoops as a kid; it was the one thing I was always good at in gym class. So my parents got me a sport hoop for Christmas this year! It took a couple of days to stop doubling over in pain whenever I started spinning it but now I am in serious love. Happy hooping! That…sounded dumb. But seriously, hoops are amazing!

FUN! Looks waaay better than slogging away on a treadmill at the gym (bo-ring). You’ve inspired me to pick one up!
My hoop has water in it which makes an awesome ‘swooshing’ noise when you are on a roll, but makes it even more difficult to regain a rhythm if you lose your timing! You should make a hooping mix tape :).
I love hooping and have been totally inspired by Deanne (Sushi Zume) who is a major hoop star now! :) I started in the hoop about the same time as she did, but am no where near her talent.
Get an adult sized hoop, you will love it even more and be able to have even more fun with it! But be warned, it is super addictive FUN!

Hula hoops scare me; I think I have childhood traumas…I may try using them though (seriously!), since I haven’t found any sport I like :( (I liked archery, but the bow is super super super expensive :

Isn’t it FUN? You should totally get an adult-sized hoop. (Warning: they’re addictive! I had a custom hoop made in R2-D2 colors for a workshop, and bought another hoop at the end of the four weeks.)

Oh god I’m utterly hopeless at this, the hoop just wont stay up!! Instead of hooping as a kid i just skidded them along the ground in that fashion which makes them come back to you! entertainment! Killer abbs i bet!

amazing amazing! hooping is so much fun, and it is easy to become addicted immediately! when i first started i had many bruises and seeming internal bruising too… BUT when you want to start learning tricks, some really good tutorials are on youtube under the channel SaFire. She’s adorable and fun and really really clear in her teaching and methods. Also, check out the site for my hoop dance troop www.flohoops.com, if you feel like it :)

Wow! here’s a new trend that could take off majorly: you should choreograph some “moves” using your hoop and all the non-pareils should practise then we have a huge hoop-off somewhere ridiculously public… then comes the hooping t-shirts, sweatshirts, earrings, jewellery, sex toys. We’ll all be hooping it up all over the world! And yes, you’re ridiculously cute in that video :)

I’ve been hooping for a couple months and still get a kick out of it! It gives you so much energy and joy. I even get happy seeing other people do it!
Keep it up – try and learn some slick moves next – like lifting the hoop off your waist above your head with your hand and then back down to your waist. Smooooth!

I taught myself how to hoop and juggle at the same time a few years back….I’m not sure I can still do it! I still have all my old hoops – my favourite is a silver, sparkly, holographic one with water inside. I might have to drag them out of hiding and get back into it – you have inspired me!!

God, I’m so jealous! I’ve never, EVER been able to hula-hoop. At all! Must be a great work-out! And that video’s right up there with your adorable sugar-fueled candy-taster one!
I am obsessed by hooping too but unfortunetely don’t have room in my house to do it & the weather outside is always about -3 now so cannot face the cold!
I am so inspired by the hoop stars & hope to follow in their paths. I want to travel to the USA & attend all the fabulous hoop classes at some point too.

We had these amazing hooping girls at our Xmas party with work…...they wore amazing metallic American Apparell leorads and one girl had 5 hoops around her at one time and 2 on each arm…...she was stepping in and out of the hoops with her feet at the same time,insane!
I asked how long it took to learn…..she said 3 years at circus school!
One of my best friends (actually two of them…but one more than the other) does hula-hoop work for performance and their hoops are tailor-made with blue-line pipe and duct-tape, they say thay have to be heavy and a certain size to hit the right points on your body to do tricks (when touching the ground, hoop should apparently come up to the crease between leg and hip). If you like I can give you their address and they can tell you how to custom or where to buy proper ones from.
They are heavier though and will take more ooph to move, but they feel much nicer to get a swing going (I might have borrowed their hoop a few million times during visits).

So I wanna go make one myself, make it pink and turquoise with holographic tape! I used to be able to hold one up for about 8 minutes when I was a kid…one time I was in a talent show at a resort and they had to kick me off the stage! Thanks for bringing hooping back to my attention, looks like fun! Abs have been the hardest part of my new workout. But tonight I am taking my first pole dancing class, yay!

ooh your so lucky your in the summer season in New Zealand. I had “start hooping” as one of my fitness goals for ’09 but when I went out to look for the hoop everyone was like “oh we only carry those during the winter”. So maybe I have to take up disco snow-shoeing.

I started hooping during my freshman year of university and always kept it to myself because I thought it was dorky and that people would think I was childish and goofy… now I can’t get over how popular it is, especially in the punk scene. You always see kids outside of shows doing hoop tricks or spinning poi or whatever… circus arts and all!
In short: Precious video, and I expect a major surge in the popularity of hooping now.
PS- thanks for the book recommendations on my blog. SARK doesn’t really do much for me but i’ve looked into a lot of the other books… i’m going to start writing reviews on my blog (Which is finally up, btw!)

After a spot of research, I found www.nakedhoops.co.uk – they sell hoops without any decoration so you can decorate them in any way you please.
UK hoopers should definitely check them out. I’ve been emailing them all afternoon and not only are they super helpful, but they’re lovely people too :)

You can get hoops you can bend to be able to carry them whilst travelling, in beautiful candy stripes!
I’m more into the staff myself (I’m such a boy at heart!) but I love it when you have sparkly little fairy rings around you when you hoop!
I remember years ago when I was ony a family holiday, my little sister was in some kids competition and one of the challenges was hula-hopping. She ended up going for so long without stopping that the guy who was presenting it ended up having to stop her!

That’s such a tiny hoop! If you want it to sparkle or glow in the dark, check out the hoop tape at www.identi – but be warned, there are far too many options for just one hoop :)
Your earlier post made me go out and buy the material for a hoop, and so now i have one, but its not round, its more elliptical shaped.

I used to work as a waitress in a 50’s diner and when it was slow we’d go out on the street and hula hoop to bring customers in. I used to be good at it, but I think I would maybe not be anymore.
WHOOHOO GALA!!! There is huge applause and encouragement from hoopers all over the world right now!
My twin sister and I love to hoop it up outside in the summer! And even inside in the winter, even though our hoops are ENORMOUS and potentially dangerous to surrounding objects! But it’s such a blast, Alanna makes our hoops with PVC pipe and duct tape. It’s so enjoyable to hoop for hours!
The hoops we have made are fairly substantial, and weigh at least 4lbs each. So be warned about hooping for too long with numerous hoops around your waist as it results in amazing bruises on your hip bones that last for weeks! We’ve found that the larger the hoop, the slower it goes and thus the easier it is to control!

Gala, you MUST get thee self to The Warehouse while in fair Aotearoa/NZ. Yesterday while perusing the aisles with my niece I came across holographic silver, blue, pink and purple hoops! for $12!!! and the best part is they are filled with water which gives it more resistance!
I saw them and thought of you, and then bought one and plan to start the hoop mania tonight after work. Yay!

you should enter! i took a class with her a few years ago and she teaches a few of the core moves in this video.
You need to add some color electric tape to give the hoop more weight. It’ll make it a lot easier to keep up and do more things with it.

I’ve just started EFT today and I love it, I can’t stop smiling…. Its hard to explain! It seems so fake-y, but its notttt at ALL. And then I also decided to start exercising, so I’m going to start running thirty minutes everyday…
then reward myself with a pet hamster (a much-wanted companion), a vintage shopping trip, cute swimsuit, and Betsey Johnson lace dress… All much-wanted things that I can’t do right now because of my insecurity…. :)
Here’s my new daily schedule…
wake up, do 2 rounds of eft, get dressed, school, watch ellen/healthy snack, thirty minutes running, do homework, twenty situps, free time (cupcakes, art, blogging, PARTIES OF LIFE!), twenty more situps, shower, eft/quiet time, aim perhaps/check email, pick out outfit, go to bed…
Sorry for huge comment… Of course there’s meals in there too… :) Just wanted to share. you ARE my inspiration. ;)

Im SO excited.
You get like massive hoops that are really heavy so it will be a challenge to say the least! :) I’ll post pictures of my hooping adventures for you!
