iCiNG Playlist
[ 23 October 2008 ]
I went to see Seth Godin speak about his new book Tribes this morning. It was amazing, & I’m so glad I woke up early & braved the cold morning air to attend!
Consequently, my head is swimming with all the things he told us. I don’t have a lot of words in me right now — so I thought I would share with you some of the songs that are rocking my eardrums lately. These songs don’t really go together at all, but I love them & wanted you to hear them too! Maybe it can be your playlist for the work-day! Regardless, I hope you enjoy them.
Born Ruffians – Little Garcon
Garbage – Supervixen
Atmosphere – Vanity Sick
Snow Patrol feat. Martha Wainwright – Set The Fire To The Third Bar
Marvin Gaye – Let’s Get It On
Montell Jordan – This Is How We Do It (!!!)
Skee-Lo – I Wish
Souls Of Mischief – ’93 ‘Til Infinity
Jeff Buckley – Everybody Here Wants You
Elliott Smith – Waltz #2
CunninLynguists – Rain
What are your favourite songs right now?
Super-love & cupcakes,

I’m totally ashamed of my top favorite songs right now! The list goes something like:
Katy Perry – Hot N’ Cold
Schwayze – Corona and Lime
Celeste (featuring Kayne West) – American Boy
Jace Everett – Bad Things
This is what happens when I don’t listen to new music for years… I’m totally turned on to cheesy pop! :X
Haha, don’t be ashamed. This afternoon I have been all about amazing remixes of awful songs. Like uh, a remix of BLINDED BY THE LIGHT, haha! & Elton John. The only reason you’ve all been spared is that there are no Youtube videos in existence!
Oh, how I miss Elliott Smith. Thanks for sharing these, Gala.
I can’t get enough of MGMT’s “Time to Pretend” and Talib Kweli’s “Listen!” Both of which are sooooo 6 months ago, but oh well. Been bizzy.
Right now my taste in music has died
I’m loving
Lady Gaga – Just Dance
Miley Cyrus – See you again
The worst part is I left my Hannah Montana cd in a work car, and now im too ashamed to go and get it back.
Oh the shame!
i’ve been OBSESSED with bright eyes’ “Bowl of Oranges” lately :)
Sal — Six months is nothing! One of those songs above is from 1993! Haha.
sarah — I haven’t heard a single song by Hannah Montana… I barely know who she is! Is that a good thing? ;>
im completely addicted to anything by alphabeat ! and i cant stop listening to Jackie Wilson – Reet Petite without a doubt makes me smile and sing at the top of my lungs
Oooh, I really can’t wait to see your report on Seth/Tribes!
Anything by of Montreal, especially their new album that was just released – Skeletal Lamping.
Oh my goodness.
The songs that are currently rocking my socks are:
I’m Good, I’m Gone – Lykke Li
Our Hell – Emily Haines
Sleepyhead – Passion Pit
White Gold – Metric
All of them should get points for their ability to give musical orgasms.
Born Ruffians!
Hummingbird – by said band.
Your English Is Good – Tokyo Police Club
Escargot – Peggy Sue and the Pirates
Balderdash – Ipso Facto
Drink That Bottle Down – Stray Cats
My Manic and I – Laura Marling
I’m currently going through a phase of various musical obsessions.
OUUUUUU Kennedy likes Emily Haines/Metric! Everybody should LOVE Emily Haines and Metric!!! They’re awesome!!
Loving:
Metric – Empty
The Black Keys – Thickfreakness
Atmosphere – Lift her, pull her
And that newest GirlTalk album (hee! I’m behind, apparently!)
relient k -the best thing
sum41—with me
the script—breakeven
the script-if you see kay
the cardigans—communication
john mayer—in your atmosphere
Oh you should all leave links to the songs on Youtube or something, so we can listen easily!
Eeeep! Montell Jordan and Skee-lo really bring things back.
Even now, I can sing both of these songs to you word for word.
I’ll do it! I swear!
Don’t you go out in the rain – Dragon
Strawberry Letter 23 – The Brothers Johnson
Purple Rain – Prince
Fairytale of New York – The Pogues
Miss Misery – Elliott Smith
Silver Lining – Rilo Kiley
Mistadobalina – Del tha Funky Homosapien
November Rain – Guns’n‘Roses
Down in Mexico – off the Death Proof soundtrack
Crossroads (the whole album!) – Bon Jovi
The rain songs are all from a rain themed mega mix my dance troupe is working on for a show in November. I choreographed the Milli Vanilli Blame it on the Rain section. Sorry, I can’t get to Youtube at work so can’t leave links, but I recommend people try and have a listen to the Dragon track, for some catchy 80s NZ pop.
Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus is Billy Ray Cyrus’ (dont tell my heart, my achy breaky heart) daughter, and well its pretty much all down hill from there.
But I cant stop listening!
Trisha — Me too! Even after not having heard them for YEARS I could do it straight away! Ahhhh I love those two tracks so much!
sarah — Oh, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus are the same person?! My aching brain! xx

Oh, oh! I love I Wish, but I listen to the super synth version by the Secret Handshake. It’s so much fun to dance to!
Fuck, I actually ALWAYS rock on to “Blinded by the Light”, which is embarrasing and hilarious at the same time.:)
I really got into that “Don’t go Breaking my heart remix” you twittered about earlier today.
I’m in one of those moods where I’m playing “The woman with the tattooed hands” on repeat.
also “puppets” I <3 atmosphere + random & bewitching Janis Joplin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVpDOIPx_sY)
but talking about more embarrasing song love affairs…last week I just couldn’t stop listening (or singing!) Britney Spears “you want a piece of me”
it’s so interesting how music appeals to us, in ways we can’t even comprehend!
The Mixed Tape – Jack’s Mannequin

www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqQOaA…
(I hope these vids get sound, for some reason my laptop isn’t playing the sound on the vids :( )
More embarrassing music on my playlist includes a heap of u2- like pretty much their whole back catalogue…. Maybe in my previous life I was rocking out at Woodstock getting toasted (and not by the sun) and burning my bras.
Ooh, Seth Godin! Can’t wait to hear about it.
The Opposite of Hallelujah – Jens Lekman
au.youtube.com/watch?v=C1CwWl0…
Philadelphia Freedom – Elton John
au.youtube.com/watch?v=bkMXnk1…
Do It – Spice Girls
au.youtube.com/watch?v=82L0nMA…
Spiralling – Keane
au.youtube.com/watch?v=M
I need some pop to get me through this miserable weather and dull studying! :)
My favorite songs I’ve put on repeat are currently:
1. Rod Stewart – Rhythm of My Heart (vagabond heart) – Just because it brings back SO many memories of when I was just a small town grrl..
2. Atmosphere – The Rooster. Okay, you made me like this Gala from that video, ahhhh!
3. Westlife – Uptown Girl. So this is just such a jumpy tune, so millennium pop, it’s a guilty pleasure hehehe.
4. Bob Marley – Could You Be Loved – Such a summer song, it’s beautiful when turned up loud in the ol’ ford stationwagon driving along the coast.
5. Hot Chip – Ready For the Floor, COOLEST song ever! At first, I was like, what the hell is this techno crap, but after a few times of listening to it, it got to meeeee~
And more, but I really want to watch a movie
I’m glad someone else loves this Jeff Buckley song as well! It’s really amazing.
Holy Crap! Set The Fire To The Third Bar was a song I listened to constantly last year! But then my computers hard drive was erased without my permission and I forgot about the song. I’ve never seen the video, thanks for reminding me of the song.
Those that I consider as the soundtrack for stripping for my bf! lol In particular, “Underneath it all” by No doubt and “Himegoto” by SiLC. ^^
The Subways—I Want to Hear What You Have Got to Say
www.youtube.com/watch?v=duCw2F…
It’s made it to the top of my Top 25 Most Played list in a matter of weeks…an impressive feat. :]
Hah, I love that Skee Lo song!! I was listening to D’Angelo this morning and feeling pretty urban, followed up by The Roots – au.youtube.com/watch?v=zTYKCva… SO MUCH LOVE, excuse the weirdo advertising video…
My Elliot Smith love is Fond Farewell at the moment, and Jeff Buckley = beautiful! I interviewed his proud (and sad) mama last year :)
And I was also rockin a little Boyz II Men ‘Motown Philly’ yesterday…teeheehee! au.youtube.com/watch?v=OHzkICG…
I haven’t listened to the radio in about a million years, and don’t think I’m missing much.

The Automatic- “Monster”

Stars- “Write What You Know”
o0o0 “Everybody Here Wants You” is one of my favorite Jeff Buckley songs. So sexy! The favorite is “Last Goodbye”.

Um… what, exactly is embarrassing about Blinded by the Light? I LOVE that song! I even have an acapella cover of it by The Exboyfriends, which rocks almost as hard as the original.
I am definitely OBSESSED with Hot n’ Cold by Katy Perry. Didn’t enjoy her last single, but I heard this and I had to have it + play it about six times on repeat. The music video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X75mry1LcFg ) is totally amazing too!
There are so many bands people have listed on here that I thought I was the only one who knew they existed… I love the internet!
I am currently IN LOVE with quirky-artsy rock en espanol
Example…
“Vamanos” by Cafe Tacuba
“Perdi mi ojo de venado” by Caifanes (they are like the spanish crooning Smiths)
and the poppy techno of

(It’s impossible to comprehend how much I adore of Montreal, unfortunately the final two minutes are cut off as the song is so long, but please don’t let that put you off, it’s a masterpiece)
uk.youtube.com/watch?v=G2p9fDJ…

These are my “OMG AMAZING” songs right now.
I heard Garageland’s Finger Pops on the radio for the first time in years, and still love it :)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rntb_E…
I got a review copy of “Tribes” through a former job a couple of weeks ago, and it IS a great book. It’s good to see that it’s getting attention…
But it’s cool to see that the author is just as inspiring in person! I’ll have to check out a reading sometime…
OH, songs!
Ahem…
I’ve been kind of obsessed with Sara Bareilles lately, so:
“Love Song” and “Fairytale”
Also been obsessed with Rachel Yamagata: “1963”
Also Regina Spektor: “Edit”
Lastly, I’ve been obsessed with Pandora Internet Radio. And also True Blood on HBO – which has one of the most interesting and eclectic soundtracks ever…I created a station that I called “True Blood Radio” and put in all the artists/songs listed on the True Blood website, and it churns out the most intriguing mix of country/folk/rock/pop ever! You should try that!
Sorry to bombard this entry with comments, but I would be remiss if I didn’t point you in the direction of a truly amazing band. Have you ever listened to Girlyman? If not, you should.
www.girlyman.com
(PS – they’re playing at Joe’s Pub on Nov. 5, and I’m more than a little excited.) :)
OK. I promise – no more comments from me today!
