Dress Up like your favorite food!
Okay, that might not make much sense, but I’m a foodie extraordinaire, so it’s all I could come up with.
What about if we had to dress to go with something well…peculiar. Taking an example from one of your previous posts, a bunch of pink balloons, while I personally find balloons to be a bit impractical, maybe if we thought of a different item or something.
I know somebody had mentioned the theme secret alter-egos for the last i.d.u.d. and I really liked that idea so I’m putting it out there again. I also think a Japanese fangirl theme would be a lot of fun.

How about… the circus! People could be animals, or knife throwers, or creepy clowns. Whatever they desire.

I’m pretty sure I remember someone saying in their entry to the james&august giveaway that they hadn’t worn their prom dress in forever. What if everyone got all dolled up in prom dresses and corsages or what they wish they’d worn to prom for the day? Because there just aren’t enough occasions to dress up like that, so we might as well make one. Plus, if I were to see some girl in a poofy dress just going shopping or something, I would totally want to be her friend.
i like the prom idea but it might not be too gender-inclusive… guys would be stuck wearing tuxes & while they would look veerrryyy hot, it wouldn’t leave much room for creativity :[
(unless, of course, they wished they had gone to prom in a crocodile suit or something… hmmm.)

speaking of blade runner maybe we can have a science fiction theme? daryl hannah was amazing! and what better time to do it than now when we can come up with an excuse to buy that silver lamé tube dress…
I don’t know but for Prom, my boyfriend and I had planned on going with a Bond/Bond girl theme for our outfits. We never went to his Prom though.
Prom makes me think of really hideous cheap dresses and worse hairstyles;/
Some ideas I’ve been thinking about:
-Dandy/flaneur
-Steampunk
-Favourite Comic character [that day I will be at a comic convention, ha!]
-Dress as yr idol [can be anything, nearly!]
-Dress as a walking anachronism [I love to mix widely different styles of th past!]
I like the idea of an Asian/Japanese theme, or dandies and fops!
Oooh how about a beatnik/coffee shop poetry reading dress up theme. I’m always inspired by reading beatnik poetry! Black turtlenecks, baggy trousers, secondhand wing tips, goatees, berets and more.
Poufy prom-dress or maiden-in-the-woods from the J&A hoodie entry.
I’m excited about the circus idea…or where we all have a particular item to be used however we wish. Something easy to come by like…a red rose? A giant lollipop? A pair of scissors?
The other idea I like is androgeny. Girls in suits, boys in pearl necklaces, fedoras for all….
i am all about the secret alteregoes one! oh, and i have also been saying ‘turns my crank’ a whole lot more, which i believe is the doing of this site :)
Another thought (although possible too specific) – an “Amelie” theme, where we all dress as French ingenues (what’s the male equivalent of an ingenue?) and eat creme brulee, skip rocks and pretend we’re in Paris!
I’m all for the alter ego one as well. Perhaps, using nadia’s idea too, we could combine the alter ego and androgyny bit!

I’ve been lusting after the “secret alter-ego” idea ever since the suggestions came out for the last IDUD...but I’m also down with the walking anachronism or the French ingenue (maybe the male equivalent would just be “ingenu”?)

Well the 16th is my Birthday so I think I should pick the theme! I joke, but will be going away so hot weather suitable is a plus.

Im emailing from Prague and just came from the Mucha Museum… We have to do a Mucha theme! Beautiful nymphettes in outfits filled with jewels or simple garments. Crowns and hair jewels… Flowers… Im in awe.

Food: A food theme – perhaps combined with the tea party theme? An indulgence theme!
Alter-egos, evil twins: Seems popular.
Circus: I like this idea. Of course, circussery (Sir Cuss?) goes hand-in-hand with burlesque.
‘Prom’: I’ve never been to a school dance in my life, thank goodness. How about a general ball/evening party theme? Something without red-faced spiky-haired youths in black shirts and boxy coloured polyester waistcoats, you know.
Sci-fi/cyberpunk/steampunk/anachronism: These all have their devotees – myself among them, to a greater or lesser extent – but are kind of ‘cult’ interests which might not appeal to everybody.
Beat/bohemia: Always a good idea!
Mucha: Or, indeed, a general Art Nouveau theme? From Klimt to Beardsley? Has potential.
I vote alter-ego.

I think I like the tea party idea. I have the perfect dress that I could wear that I rarely feel like pulling out of the closet.
Ooh…I just had a thought. How about Alice in Wonderland tea party? It could be very psychedelic. Bright colors and tea dresses. Oh yes. You know you want to.

I’m working at a ladies gym and we do a dress-up every moth.
We did: Circus, pirates and gypsies, hat & shirt, from east to west, 60’s, what I wanted to be, Disney characters, rock ‘n roll, weirdo’s, a day at the races, show girls, masked ball, back to school, fairy tales, cowboys and crooks, mad hatters tea party, favorite animal, seaside splendor, favorite sport, different cultures etc etc.
