International Dress Up Day #006 Suggestions!

[ 12 July 2007 ]

I want to hear your ideas for the next International Dress Up Day on Saturday the 21st of July! I had this vague idea about making into a bit of a slumber party… wild hair & pyjamas & vintage nightgowns! I also had thoughts about a live chat that we could all participate in. But it’s not very “dress up”!

Any thoughts?!

Super-love & cupcakes,
Gala <3

  1. How about an international tea/french hot chocolate party? On my end I have a great black and be-ribboned top hat with the ShoeMissy black heels I featured in my first post and black scalloped gloves from Florence. Pink mini-fishnets round out the accessories and add some sass to a more conservative skirt and top.

Pull out your tea cups and Cheer-ahs!

  2. What about dress up as your favourite music genre? Complete with music listings for the evening.

Or glamour (Belle of the ball)? Boring I know, but a lot of people don’t really get a chance to dress up in your best gears very often.. Think tiaras, curlers, beatiful pins and wraps! :) Oh and hats for the guys, MmMm, men in hats.

  3. Haha! Poochie, I just had a similar theme, with a Monarchy Party today.
What about… dress in traditional ethnic fashion that’s different from your own?
I’d LOVE to wear some beautiful Indian sari or Japanese kimono.
OH! And you have to learn a bit too, about that culture and post what you discovered. (NO WIKIPEDIA!)
It might help break down certain stereotypes too!

  4. I suggested the sleep over theme last time and I still think it could be the slumber party of the year. I have tried to participate in IDUD the last four or five times but it is always on a day when I have to go somewhere or meet someone who would not get the hole IDUD thing (idiots). So I’ve kind of been too embarrassed. I think a slumber party is a great idea because even if you need to have brunch with Granny or go to Church you can still dress up.It would also give the option of wearing it the night before so you can get morning shots or the actual night so you can get some not so smudged/scrunched/morning breathed/frizzy haired photos. Wow morning photos do sound fun.I’d like to see what people look like when they wake up.

  5. Hmmm… I don’t know. Tonight I’m going to the release of the next Harry Potter movie at midnight, + I am going as a punk slytherin chick. All my friends + I are dressing up, + I am very reminded of you! I’ll put the pictures up on my flickr + send you a link if you like.

So I guess my suggestion is music/literature hybrids? Haha, I don’t know. :)

  6. How about dress up as what you thought you wanted to be when you werte 5 – remember at school you had to do a when I grow up I want to be a …..I wanted to be a solid gold dancer – I quite fancy a gold romper suit and an afro!

  7. All these ideas sound great! For some reason I had been planning sleepover shots (morning breath photos – hahaha!). I am off to Harry Potter tonight so am quite happy to pose in my ‘Order of the Phoenix’ kit, although I don’t think I’ll be going as far as Beth’s ‘punk Slytherin chick’. But I also quite like the idea of dressing up as the ballerina I wanted to be when I was 5 . .

    <3 Nadine · Jul 12, 07:28 AM · #
  8. PS – Beth: you have inspired me and I am now running around ironing shirts and looking for ties preparing to rock my Hogwarts ensemble tonight (in less than 4 hours!).

    <3 Nadine · Jul 12, 07:58 AM · #
  9. Maybe I’m hungry…but what about some sort of food theme?

    <3 Saxy · Jul 12, 08:01 AM · #
  10. I love the dress as what you wanted to be when you were 5 idea! I wanted to be a princess LOL.

    <3 Victoria · Jul 12, 08:12 AM · #
  11. Sarah, I think the dress up as what you wanted to be when you were 5 is a great idea as well. I wanted to be a teacher, prudish or racey? It could go either way! Heh.

    <3 Kelly · Jul 12, 08:19 AM · #
  12. Yay, live chat would be fun.
And I will suggest…favourite cartoon characters.

    <3 Opium · Jul 12, 09:02 AM · #
  13. I would say a science fiction/space theme. (great time to get out the Lamé leggings.

Or tea party. I love having the chance to get all dolled up.

    <3 amanda · Jul 12, 10:02 AM · #
  14. We vote for the tea party!
    Love Poppy & Mei. XX

    <3 Bex · Jul 12, 10:07 AM · #
  15. deanna — Ahh, it was you who suggested it! I am so keen to do it, but maybe it should be separate from i.D.U.D. altogether? The iCiNG Slumber Party, hee hee. I would love for us all to have webcam chatting going, but I don’t think you can have multiple webcams? Or can you?! Does anyone know?

Sarah — I wanted to be a writer… no dressing up required ;D

    <3 Gala · Jul 12, 10:08 AM · #
  16. I like the music/literature blend idea, actually!

    <3 Sir Frederick Chook · Jul 12, 10:34 AM · #
  17. I really like the…“What I wanted to be when I Grew Up”..idea.

    <3 Nina · Jul 12, 10:57 AM · #
  18. How bout your favourite celebrity paparazzi shot? Hehe. Oh if only I had those Balenciaga boots. I can’t get over them.

    How about a Harajuku theme?

    <3 calliope! · Jul 12, 11:13 AM · #
  19. i also like the ‘what i wanted to be when i grew up’, because i wanted to be a Lost Boy (um, but in girl form) and i would love to dress up as one now!

    <3 nico · Jul 12, 12:47 PM · #
  20. when i was five i wanted to gargamel :|

    <3 sarah · Jul 12, 12:53 PM · #
  21. clearly i meant i wanted to BE gargamel

    <3 sarah · Jul 12, 01:00 PM · #
  22. sarah, ‘to gargamel’ sounds like some sort of awesome dance! :)

    <3 nico · Jul 12, 01:47 PM · #
  23. sarah — I LOVED Gargamel! He was so much cooler than those boring, goody-two-shoes Smurfs. Haha.

nico — Ya, involving the donning of ugly robes & stomping on little blue people! ;D

    <3 Gala · Jul 12, 01:51 PM · #
  24. I LOVE the idea of dressing up as your 5-year-old self’s aspiration! I wanted to be a food stylist. :D

    <3 Nadia · Jul 12, 02:24 PM · #
  25. FOOD STYLIST! That is sooooooo cute, oh my GOD.

    <3 Gala · Jul 12, 02:26 PM · #
  26. When I was 5 I wanted to be an ice-cream lady, mainly so I could eat all the ice cream when no one was looking. I guess that could have some dressing up potential…

    <3 Bridey · Jul 12, 02:42 PM · #
  27. Yeah, I’m with a few other people. I’ll be dressing up as a Hogwarts student that night. But, I’m all for dressing up twice in one day!

    <3 Brittany · Jul 12, 03:52 PM · #
  28. i wanted to be a vet. how boring! then i wanted to be a pirate. heh heh.

    <3 gilda · Jul 12, 05:21 PM · #
  29. I really like the “What did you want to be when you were 5…?” theme too!
I wanted to be a veternarian to kittens, but a pop star on the side.
I’ll sing the kittens back to health (I can’t sing for my life).

    <3 Retro.Bunny · Jul 12, 06:42 PM · #
  30. I like the what you wanted to be when you were five idea as well! Like Retro.Bunny, I wanted to be a pop star and it took me at least another five years to consider any other option in my “professional” life.

    <3 S.A.W · Jul 12, 07:26 PM · #
  31. The “when you were 5 what you wanted to be” doesn’t work so much for me, I wanted to be a writer always.

In other news, I will be in Japan for i.D.U.D. #6! (I’m from Canada and will be there for 2 weeks).

Space/futuristic theme sounds great to me!

    <3 emilyy · Jul 12, 07:56 PM · #
  32. i’m not sure if this idea was posted or even done before, but i thought dressing up like your most hidden desire.
your biggest wish; of being someone, or doing something in particular, and dressing up for this! :D

    <3 deedee · Jul 12, 09:00 PM · #
  33. I wanted to be sailor moon when i was five… i always tried to put my hair in the little buns with rocks. It always ended in pain and bumps on my head. But i’m willing to give it another try ! PS This will be my first I.D.U.D! YEY! :D

    <3 willa · Jul 12, 09:00 PM · #
  34. I wanted to be a gold miner when I was 5!!! I think I may have been a little misguided… haha

    <3 Renai · Jul 12, 09:21 PM · #
  35. I love reading about what everyone wanted to be when they were five! It’s so cute! Ha ha, when I was five I wanted to be a teacher or a model or a ballerina. One of my earliest memories (I think I was four) is telling my brother that I wanted to be queen when I grew up, and if I couldn’t be queen, I wanted to be a princess, and if I couldn’t be a princess, I wanted to be a cowgirl. :P Maybe those of you who wanted to be writers could dress up the way you pictured a writer when you were five? I always pictured them looking something like this: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/132/416006661_c4c02878f6.jpg?v=0 )
The sleepover idea sounds like a blast!!! I do agree that it would make more sense as a separate even from IDUD.

    <3 Kelly · Jul 12, 09:49 PM · #
  36. Sounds like you’ve got a lot of good ideas going, I personally really dig the slumber party idea (mainly because I actually have a vintage nightgown, ha). Whatever the next theme is, I’m definitely in and can’t wait to be a part of. :]

    <3 Aarika · Jul 12, 09:55 PM · #
  37. I’d suggest dressing up as a Harry Potter character, since the 21st is the day that the seventh and final book is to be released.

    <3 Sydney · Jul 13, 01:28 AM · #
  38. I’m all for the morning/pajama dressups! I’m continually getting told how grumpy I look in the morning. :p
Is there going to be another iCiNG morning tea soon? I’m coming to Melbourne from the 8-10th of August, I’d love to come to one.

    <3 revo · Jul 13, 09:10 AM · #
  39. Gosh you guys have fun “what i wanted to be when i grow up” ideas.

i wanted to be doctor!! then a scientist!!

    how boring!

those were the only jobs i knew that existed…sad.

    <3 Cruella · Jul 13, 05:57 PM · #
  40. I’d love to this. only problem is i dont own much money or clothes lol.

    <3 Jay-Jay · Jul 15, 05:06 AM · #
  41. i think it would be cool to have an international high tea party, get dressed up and have cucumber sandwiches, beautiful cakes etc :)

    <3 ashleah · Jul 15, 03:50 PM · #
  42. I think a great theme to use one of these days would be “No photos, please”... playing off of gala’s previous post. Dressing like a celeb avoiding the paparazi. Yea?
