Kimono Love!
[ 6 September 2007 ]

I finally bought my kimono… I LOVE IT!

It’s dark blue with hot pink flowers, as you can see. It’s quite long & I have tried tying it up & folding it over so that it doesn’t drag, & making an impromptu obi out of a scarf, but it’s not really working…
I think I am going to get it shortened so that I can wear it normally. At the moment it drags on the ground behind me. I know this is probably not the way to do it, but if it’s too difficult I just won’t wear it at all!
Super-love & cupcakes,

Yaaymarvelous! Where did you get it? Do they sell obis? If not, I can point you somewhere that can!
You should totally shorten it – just around knee level where that big ol’ crease is. Use the off-cut to line a custom-made obi. No, actually TWO of them, one pink and one blue, and with the pattern peeking out on the reverse, showing where the knot is tied. Yeah.
it is beautiful gala. if it were me, i would keep it long, and just get a tall pair of geta to wear with it. :]
Niice! I so want a kimono, so that when I’m backstage I have something nice to put on whilst I’m doing my make-up, instead of either a grungy dressing gown, or trying to take my t-shirts off over the make-up and invariably getting mass amounts of foundation and lipstick caked on the collar.
wow its pretty :) i like the colours! kimonos are beautiful in summer … i used to have a very nice one but it got a big hole. i jumped off a jetty and put my knee through it :(
aww!!! its so pretty!
I guess it depends on if you want to wear it as a traditional kimono or more as a lounging robe kinda thing.
Traditional kimono are meant to be too long so you can pull it up over into a slight puffy billow around the obi at the waist so the length is perfect against your feet. The inner belt/strap should be thin and really long so they can go up to (I think) 7 times around your waist as you hoik it up. And then the external decorative obi goes over it and is tied to the strap/elastic/belt.
Else get it altered to a comfortable length if you don’t intend to wear it often in the traditional manner?
Gorgeous kimono! I just pulled mine out of storage last week, now that it’s getting a bit cold in London.
That print is so beautiful – it would make the most gorgeous wrap dress (should you get sick of wearing it kimono-style!)
It looks great Gala, lovely strong colours.
You could cut it shorter more towards your waist for a great crop jacket (I also shortened the sleeves a bit), or longer for a wrap dress.
Have a look at this site they are the most beautiful formal clothes I have seen (Sydney based designer) with kimono and saris used.

Another amazing designer who uses furisode and wedding kimonos for formal wear.

Sir Chook — I bought it from Kimono House in that building which houses Genki & Retrostar… They do sell obis but I didn’t get one!
Nadine — I like the way you think! Yeah, I will get it cut at about that length I think. I really would like to be able to wear it open, like a coat, it’s going to be SO good in summer! But it is also fabulous done up, or for lounging in… it is exactly what I wanted. My birthday present to myself! So happy.
l3antha — It’s WAY too long for that! Even with big platform boots, it drags…
Damsel — That sounds totally glamorous. I just love swanning around in mine, it trails behind me beautifully!
Lyraethe — Yup, I know, but that’s way too complicated for me. I don’t like to fuss with clothing if I can avoid it!
Ammu — It’s such gorgeous fabric, I’m kind of envisioning a chaise longue covered in it…
merle — That Culture Shock site is amazing! I LOVE what they’ve done with the kimono fabric. Totally gorgeous. Thank you for the link!
Wooooow! it’s beautiful!!!
Look at this page: http://www.japaneselifestyle.com.au/fashion/how_to_wear_yukata.html
It shows us how to wear kimono
Their is a weird shadow in the second photo, it looks like the silhouette of a man and women holding each other.
Lunita — That’s an intense tutorial! I don’t know if I am dexterous/patient enough to do that every time I want to wear it…
Robbie — Hmm! True! My friend Nadia was taking the photo, I guess it was our shadows combining :>
Yay, kimonos! I wear mine in the bath. It’s so nice.
I found this exceprt in one of Dale Carnegie’s books, I thought it would make you smile:
Bob Hoover, a famous test pilot and frequent performer at air shows, was returning to his home in Los Angeles from an air show in San Diego. As described in the magazine Flight Operations, at three hundred feet in the air, both engines suddenly stopped. By deft maneuvering he managed to land the plane, but it was badly damaged although nobody was hurt.
Hoover’s first act after the emergency landing was to inspect the airplane’s fuel. Just as he suspected, the World War II propeller plane he had been flying had been fueled with jet fuel rather than gasoline.
Upon returning to the airport, he asked to see the mechanic who had serviced his airplane. The young man was sick with the agony of his mistake. Tears streamed down his face as Hoover approached. He had just caused the loss of a very expensive plane and could have caused the loss of three lives as well.
You can imagine Hoover’s anger. One could anticipate the tongue-lashing that this proud and precise pilot would unleash for that carelessness. But Hoover didn’t scold the mechanic; he didn’t even criticize him. Instead, he put his big arm around the man’s shoulder and said, “To show you I’m sure that you’ll never do this again, I want you to service my F-51 tomorrow.”
Very pretty and complements your hair!
Wearing a kimono is not only intense, but requires HELP ... it’s just impossible to do casually and by yourself. i think your option is best, and the most fuss-free. i wear children’s ones which are quite short already, and easier to use as wrap dresses or gowns or for when i just want to swan through my house feeling opulent :)
after i saw this post, i went and counted my kimono … gulp. i officially have too much clothing!!!
also – i love the kimono you chose. i can’t think of a colour that would have flattered you more. perfect!
I adore your kimono. You’re a cutie.
Yay! I love seeing people with authentic kimono. =D Wearing a kimono traditionally can be a bit tough, takes me about 30mins on a good day. If you want to see a bunch of cute ways to wear kimono sort of non-traditionally, look up the magazine Kimono Hime. It mixes traditional elements in wild patterns and colors with vintage hats, gloves, shoes, tights, jewelry, and just about everything. You can also shorten the kimono by folding it under a corset or obi; http://tinyurl.com/399phf
PS: Check out my site for some kimono info and links. =D
no fair! now i want one!
I’ve always wanted a Kimono, your is utterly delightful and gorgeous, aren’t you supposed to wear those ridiculously high geisha shoes with them too?
oh my gosh!! i am smacking myself silly(mentally, ok). AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! I went to Cathedral Arcade last weekend and bought things from Retrostar and Alice Euphemia(which is the name i shall give my first child, boy or girl!!) and i looked at the floor list, and i told my dad it said Kimono House . . . and i didn’t go there because i thought it was a studio.
Depressesed, frustrated and P.Od beyond belief.
Whack, whack, whack . . .
