Name The iCiNG Orchid!
[ 8 January 2008 ]

I bought this Phalaenopsis orchid for my desk yesterday. The petals are diaphanous & slightly sparkly, the centre is hot pink & neon yellow zebra-print, & I love it. However, it doesn’t have a name — & since it sits on my desk, where I work, I thought maybe it would be nice if it had a name bestowed upon it by a nonpareil.
Suggestions?
Love letters & feather headdresses,

Glinda..like from the Wizard of Oz… :D
You know they first thing I though?
Lily. Lily the Orchid.
Prudence…
I’ve always liked Nadja.
Also, Silvina, Sil for short.
Hm…
“Pearl”—
Flowers are so beautiful; they can often be formed by the strangest of things (like a grain of sand..)
OR
The funny route: Judy Bloom ;]
Ooh, I revoke my suggestion, I think Judy Bloom is adorable.
:D
June
What a gorgeous orchid! I 3rd ‘Judy Bloom’.
These suggestions are so funny!
enna — Lily Van Der Woodsen (from Gossip Girl) is my new style icon!
Emzz — Prudence was my grandmother’s name!
Lilly — One of my best friends is called Nadia!
Allison — JUDY BLOOM IS AWESOME. I bought a book from an op shop a while ago full of children’s letters to her!
see, i have no idea. i just want to name everything pony or moon unit.
judy bloom is cute, though!
Aroha.
darla! —-haha, sorry, i love that name.
rose the orchid. hehehe.
i really do like darla though.
ok so im obsessed with naming things:
*Salvador!
*Camille (French for perfect)
*Doki Doki!
*Monsieur Glitterface
*Mademoiselle Zebraspot
*Laetitia Loveface (Laetitia means joy)
*Tarina
...more to come! xxoo
I’m voting for Glinda!
judy blume. teeheehee. i like it.
cookie — I always thought that when I got my dachshund, I’d call it Salvador. My little husband, AW! But now I think that if I got a girl, I’d call it Plum. I love the name Plum! SO MUCH! Arrrghhh!!
my 1st vote is Judy Bloom
my 2nd is Glinda
and my suggestion is Sebastian. Who says the pretty flower cant be a pretty BOY flower?
Marielle Sparkle Darling, of course!
I say of course like I didn’t just spend some quality time with a French name generator.
Good point Bexxx- the world of botany is sexist enough as it is without us perpetuating the stereotype.
Judy Bloom is an awesome idea too :)
serena!
Jude Bloom perhaps then?
I like Judy Bloom! Darla’s also good because it rhymes with Gala.
Phyllis the Phalaenopsis could also work.
Bertrand.
nana — You’re SO biased! Don’t think I don’t know that you want a secret tribute to your wife on my desk!
It looks like a Persephone to me.
Louis Seize.
sorry, i’m watching Marie Anotinette, and Jason Schwartzman is adorable. much like the flower!
I have an orchid (although it is faux and not so lustrously beautiful as yours!) that I named Francesca, after one of my favourite writers, Francesca Lia Block.
Your description of “diaphanous & slightly sparkly, the centre is hot pink & neon yellow zebra-print” even reminds me of her writing. I believe that your flower is just dying to be named Francesca. *
Judy Bloom is quite def! I’d definately say yes to that.
Gershwin =D
or Arabella
Persephone
Definately Judy Bloom
I like Persephone- so that’s my vote.
But I do like Ophelia or Penelope (good, faithful Penelope).
Diana Darling. Diana Vreeland + your awesome last name, LOL. :)
I forgot your middle name, my mind just went blank – but maybe that’ll be a good name, too.
Lovely Lottie
aHA! that’s one of the Fairyland hybrids. I bought one for my lover’s birthday last year. I like the “Van der Woodsen” rather than “Lily” as an orchid name.
Inspiringly beautiful, fragile, delicate, a bit stubborn, head in the clouds, flirtatious,... – Miss Ingram :) (hee hee) – or – Miss Smilla (snow-white reference ;) )
Anaïs!
Farsiris
Vivienne St. George …lol there was a lady that came into my store the other day named that and I thought it was simply marvelous …
While I love the name Judy Bloom, I thought I’d offer some of my own…
* Matisse (like the painter, and the name just sounds so pretty that I think I’ll name one of my children that)
* Murglemurtle (it was the name of the imaginary friend of a character in a book I loved when I was younger, and it just sounds so funny)
* Miss Sexy Pants (couldn’t help suggesting it – it’s my current term of endearment for my female friends)
betina bloom ? I also like Farsiris and Anais!
:)
Glenda!
I would also like to put in a vote for Judy Bloom.
Teehee, wouldn’t it be wonderful to work from a balcony?
i like the word Fylo i made up last year and still have not yet found a meaning for it
Oh oh! Princess Fairy Ninja Sparkles Pirate Llama Toast Cupcake Flowerface the Third! :D
Um, yes, this is why nobody lets me name pets or anything… o_O.
Isabella
girigiri
yunoka
Oscar
I love naming things! Sometimes I name my handbags which my bf thinks is really weird!
I do like Judy Bloom though!
Beatrice is what came to mind when I saw it.
or perhaps Dolores…
I love the idea of Glinda or Persephone!
Or maybe: Mignonne, Aeolis, Oliver, Hercule Poirot, Athena, Calypso, Flora, or Sherlock?
PS, Lulu I can relate. Pretty much every inanimate object I’ve encountered has a name; it’s so much more fun to say, “Where is R2D2?” than “Where is my suitcase?”
Hey! That’s Bernard – Bertrand is my recurring homage to the one and only Mr Russell! ^.~
Squiggle Fig or patty cake! These names remind me of rabbits but i still think they are cute!
Ok…
1. Lina (it means delicate)
2. Edie (Coz the glitteryness and zebra description remind me of a Sarra Manning novel, and Edie is the ulimate Manning heroine.)
3. Shonagon (It made me think of The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon)
4. Odette (After a famous ballet character)
Japanese names:
*Kioko -(meets world with happiness)
*Kohana (Little Flower)
*Toki (Time of Opportunity)
*Yoko (Positive Child)
since you like the name Plum how about “Little Miss Plum Pompadour” ?
Or Pompadour Plum.
my friend once made me cupcakes for my bday they had this amazing jammy deliciousness in them called “plum Pompadour”..was divine.Christian (like Christian Dior?)
or Yves/Laurent.
haha no idea.
good luck naming it.
Isadora! The name derives from the Egyptian goddess Isis – she was the goddess of the sky and nature.
Everyone seems to think Judy Bloom which sounds pretty cute actually. Im thinking GRACE JONES in capitals….why?i guess the tiger stripes did it. Or you could just call it Seraffina after Serafina Pekkala.Hehehe! Its an exotic flower after all!
bagheera!!! name your orchid with its animal print throat for the leopard that mowgli travels the jungles with in “the jungle book”. enjoy your fabulous phalaenopsis!!!
Flutter is what comes to mind for me…Flutter Vreeland. I don’t know why.
Beautiful flower!
layla. It looks like an l-name to me, and that was the first that came to mind. lovely lovely layla…
in other news, I would KILL for that view!
Queen Alice the Planted
The first name I thought of was Lorelai, and the second was Ouisa (like from Six Degrees of Separation). Ah, I love naming things…when I was younger, I made huge long lists of names I liked or invented. I still do, actually.
Foux da Fa-fa!
Judy Bloom is simply precious. Squee.
Lately my favorite names have been Soleil, Aeolian and Marley.
I name everything, but I’ve been waiting for something extra-special to break out those three. ( :
roxanne
I just love that name
and I second layla
thats my second favourtie name haha
after roxanne of course :)
I like Stellaluna…
ooh, actually i agree with anura: GRACE JONES and it has to be in capitals :)
Judy Bloom!!
That’s so beautiful!
I like Judy Bloom for a name :O)
Why hasn’t anyone voted for “Doki Doki!”? That’s such a cute name.
Or you could combine names like “Judy Blume Salvador” so you could call her Mrs. Salvador. Or Bluming Salvador. Or Persephone Bloom. Or something silly like that.
Bella Dear.
My first thought was Lady…
Or maybe Sylvie.
naame it some thing snazzy like.
skye (sweetnam)
First thing that came to my mind…
Penelope.
Judy Bloom sounds dandy though…
demeter?
Helmut!
Aurelia – because its graceful, beautiful and just a little foreign and hard to know how to pronounce correctly – bit like Phalaenopsis, Judy Bloom is very cute as well …
Funny everyone should like Judy Bloom- Blume was a major 19th century botanist who worked with orchids a lot (sorry, horticulture-geek moment!)
I like Bellina! or maybe Yumé or Setsuna? So many options!
name her Lyra.
it’s beautiful, is from the Golden Compass (was a book first by the way!) and means “the Chosen One”, the Harp, The light.
hmm. I like Stelly, after Mz. Stella McCartney.
Or Copernicus, if its a he. :)
Dorothy! Because it’s a cool name. I called my pot plant Peggy. I wish I hadn’t now, but it’s all she’ll answer to.
How about Jaminda?
Judy Bloom ftw. Or Leo Bloom if it’s a boy. But to suggest for the sake of suggesting: Flora Amour, or, because it’s a moth orchid, Anabelle Lecter or Jane Gumb. Authorially, Flattery O’Connor, Hortense Hears-a-Who, or Baroness Orchidzy. For pop-horticulture, Amanda Leporchid, Salvadorchid Dali, or Christian D. Orchid, for the Christian Dior Kid. ;)
My mother’s got a pair called Selma & Goon. Myself I keep an amaryllis named Minnie. La, plantlove. Très Léon & Mathilda.
Edie or Eva!
PS – ‘Zsa Zsa’ could also be an option!
YEEEAH YA!!
anais. it means it grace. it is quite delicate, and I think quite fitting for an orchid.
beautiful picture by the way.
I’d like to put in a vote for Schatze, it’s German for ‘sweetheart’ and also it’s the name of the character played by the fabulous Lauren Bacall in How To Marry A Millionaire!
JBD. You are really good at this.
Help me name my baby lol
An Orchid Named Felicity.
Lorraine The Splendid Phalaenopsis Orchid of Wonders! (-of Doom works too… it depends on one’s mood/disposition, i suppose).
I called mine Patsy and Eddie after my favourite TV show Absolutely Fabulous…
Call it Sharon!
Hello, it’s an Australian flower.
wibbly – “An Orchid Named Felicity.”
WINNER! ;) xox
Chloe or Bogart =)
i’d like to suggest Phinnaeus :) It sounds perfect to me and I usually have such trouble naming things!
Veruca.
I really like Persephone as well.
I really want an Orchid Mantis! So cute!
Name it Dulce, because it looks so sweet!
P.S. ^^She’s Adrienne too!^^
From one Atmosphere fangirl to another, you should call her Lucy Ford. :)
Penelope iCiNG
It kinda looks like icing, and Penelope is a play on it’s species name… :)
Or maybe it’s a Phoebe. Phoebe Eloise.
When I first saw it I thought “Ikebana” but I have no idea why :) I think it made me think Japanese and the “I” was to do with iCiNG. Other than that, I have no idea what the connection is :)
Ophelia Orchid… Ophelia was such a beauty (according to Shakespeare), and I am a huge fan of alliteration!
George, or Keith, or Alphonse ;)
Perhaps the name “Freedom Bloom” as it captures the essence of nature and being free to bloom to your best!
...But Gala, it already has a name, a full name too.points to box...David Jones!! lol..sounds like a muse kinda name, like when ure trying to think of a post, you turn to it and say in a voice ala kitty from Dharma and Greg ‘David, David Jones dear, what do you think of this?..’ etc lol
luv laila x
-Gwen
after Gwen Stefani
-Antoinette
after Marie Antoinette [clearly..hehe]
but i agree.. Judy Bloom & Lily Van Der Woodsen would be ADORABLE and lovely!
David Jones! It’s already on the box! David makes a fabulous name for a flower.
Although, Lily Van Der Woodsen is a brilliant name as well.
Lily and Rufus * don’t want to spoil it! * I was shocked. How do you feel about it?
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?
Hehe, my Persephone is getting the votes.
Ooh, I’ve had another idea.
Zita! I’ve got an Aunt Zita, and she’s very lovely, but quite zany as well, much like your flower. (It does, after all, have zebra stripes)
Mademoiselle Blossom (Powerpuff Girls!!!)
I don’t know, I like Bob.
I’m voting for Zsa Zsa! Fabulous, darling!
My own orchid, which I’ve had for a number of years, is called Cleo. If you click through to me blog, you can see some photos of her. In a strange moment of synchroncity, Gala, you bought your orchid and posted about it at the same time as Cleo bloomed for this first time this year!
Frosting or Juno the roman queen of gods.
Audrey – Feed her! ;-)
My first thought was Ophelia, which I see has already been suggested, so I vote for that!
...As a full name, I say…Ophelia Raine Darling.
I was thinking Hanako it’s Japanese for flower child. I also love Lautrec. My plant is named London Constantinople. This is named after the first place i visited overseas and the place i want to visit. It’s something like Tokyo York for you after Japan and New York for you.
Folks, meet the adorable Giseli Blümchen, the supermodel of the flower world :-))
And what if the orchid’s a gentleman? Please, Gala, call out the name “Sir Halcyon” and see if the beautiful orchid nods his approval.
How about ‘Soy’?
It means ‘I am’ in spanish, and it’s also dairy free!!
xxx
“Amanda Leporchid, Salvadorchid Dali, or Christian D. Orchid”
Hahaha!
I have exactly the same orchid; slightly sparkly, waxy-diaphanous petals. It was the first my husband gave me, around six years ago and is still going strong on my kitchen windowsill. Take care not to over-water, also, mine (I currently have six) thrive on an outlook to the west (would that be to the east where you are?). :)
I’m not very creative after just rolling out of bed.
But I agree with everybody else. Judy Bloom.
Marchesa Judy Bloom :)
you have so many comments i have no idea how you can read them all. anyway, you should read the orchid thief and/or see adaptation. it is very inspiring for the novice orchid owner (and in general)!
I like Garbo.
Bette.
Lana.
Mae. *Rhett”.
xoxo.
Ahaha my dads name is David Jones, like that ribbon!
I think… Aurora.
“Christian D. Orchid” is wonderful! I mentioned on Flickr that Sophia might be nice- it means “wisdom”, which would be fitting for you and iCiNG, I think! Also, it’s a beautiful name, and the orchid looks like it would have a girl’s name ending in “-a”.
Guinea. It’s the first name that comes to my mind, but I find it very elegant and simple, just like the orchid :)
Esmerelda :)
Zizzou.
How about Nefertiti? An Egyptian queen! ^^
Orchids were the flowers on the tables at my wedding and people got to take them home afterward. One person says its a growing reminder of how much fun she had.
But that is not the point.
I say Madeline, im not thinking of the cutie french girl but of my co-worker who loves to put on music from the 30ties and we dance around while there are no coustomers.
Or Poppy the Barbarian. i love naming cute things barbarian.
What a beutifull orchid. Placed on a wonderful view!
You have such a great way of making things look amazing.
How about Lumier?
Janet Paape
my roommate and I always give our plants crazy ladies’ names, like Cheryl for our bamboo and Gwendolyn for our Christmas cactus… So for your orchid I recommend Ophelia or Caroline :)
hmm..
mei
snowy
rupel
daphne
clarity
milky
....
kanye west
you should name it after me :D
Penelope? <3
Vincent… Or cupcake
I name everything George…
But I feel that this orchid’s name should be Roberto, or Emelie. Or an androgeneous name, since flowers are sexless… ooh, the possibilities…
Cupcake!
Laetitia!
Cupcake.
I love love love Orchid’s
Special pink ones.
Asa?
It means born at dawn!
L’Ellanor De’Creme
David Jones!
As it´s said on the box. And you know: Renaming a flower is bringing you bad luck.
Or was it a different thing? However.^^
I go with my pre-postress Julia “L´Ellanor De Creme” is an amazing name :)
Oh my god, David Jones is hilarious! I love it.
Suki
or…
Ginny
Both are somewhat delicate but still tough at the same time, I think.
You guys are nuts :D Haahahah!
i LOVE judy bloom. but ophelia is beautiful, too!
“dig ophelia, consider it dug/flowers’ madness & polar bear rug”! :D
I liked ophelia too, but perhaps “ophellie”, the french way… I also thought “Miss Golightly”...or Holly Golightly, as in Breakfast at Tiffany’s..
Or what about “Lady”...or if it’s a boy “Porthos”, like the musketeer…nah that suits a dog better… or lucy? for lucy in the sky with diamonds?
Oh, and I liked Prudence very much too…
good luck Gala…I want a flower like that one! It’s gorgeous!
infinite x’s and o’s!
Girls like flowers & making up ridiculous names. Fact!
amber catch — True that. When I used to write fiction, I had lists & lists of names that I wanted to use. Most of them were kind of Scandinavian with lots of vowels next to each other, haha.
Hi, Gala’s mum!! (waves excitedly)
Name it Roger Livingston! :D Mr. Iraj and Mr. Edgar are also good choices.
Gala, I made lists of names for my characters too! I had so much fun choosing them.
I think Judy Bloom is efficiently appropriate as it is a flower and it does bloom and since she was a writer and you write things for your site…i think it works although for such a beautiful delicate bloom maybe call it something Bloom…i think it has to be something Bloom….
btw have you seen the really lame yet amusing Hilary Duff Flick the perfect man…in one scene the guy describes why an orchid makes a women feel special…like she is worth more then roses…watch it for that scene Gala you would appreciate it…
name it mike jones
hehe
Yuki :)
Lola?
Isla?
I also like Prudence and Judy Bloom..
Isabella… as in Isabella Blow… It’s so delicate and beautiful it reminds me so much of the hats Phillip Treacy used to create for her… in fact I believe he even made an orchid one that Naomi Campbell wore on the runway at some stage. Isabella, it’s beautiful like the orchid, and just like everything else about you! Mwah! xxx
What about nonpareil? Singular of nonpareils, which are not only your fabulous readers ;) but also those adorable candy decorations for cakes. And that orchid does rather look like an adorable candy decoration.
Simply beautiful photo btw.
Beautiful picture! And beautiful flower!
My suggestions would be:
-Diva
-Greta
or
-Lumi (Finnish for “snow” and also a Finnish girl’s name)
I was going to sit here and try to think of something clever, but when I read the Judy Bloom suggestion I knew it just couldn’t be beat. Plus, everyone needs a plant named Judy :\
well Gala!
I have a standard tan dachshund named PLUM!
She is so gorgeous and is the love of my life. By the way your site is just so so so fabulous! Its an daily addiction
Miranda
Vivien
Tatiana
I can write Kyoko in Hiragana for you! Tell me your address and I’ll make you something nice for that orchid.
I like the name Kyoko, too. Did you know that was the name of Yoko Ono’s first child? Before Sean Lennon.
In Romanji Japanese, Kioko is written like “Kyoko” but in Hiragana, they’re written the same so if I make something for you, it will read as both. Your orchid has a name that’s a little Japanese with a twist. Neat.
Please send your address!
xox
Julie
But now that I read these comments, I (belatedly) vote for David Jones. That would have been so funny because it’s already written on the ribbon. Ha.
Kioko is gorgeous, though.
name it Blossom
if its a man flower, name it VLADAMIR. or, you could name it afer Simon! ;)
I’m sure you’ve named it by now, Gala… what did you decide?????
Strawbri lee
