Possible Style Icons
[ 24 March 2007 ]
I’m not 100% sure on either of these girls yet, but I think they have definite potential.
I have a soft spot for Amy Winehouse because she was born a day after me, in the same year! I put a lot of stock in weird things like that.
I also like her because she has great pin-up tattoos, massive hair, dramatic eye makeup & absolute tons of talent. She seems a bit messed up but that’s okay, aren’t we all to some degree? She also provides great soundbites:
At around age 10, Winehouse founded a short-lived amateur rap group called Sweet ‘n’ Sour, as Sour. She described the group as “the little white Jewish Salt ‘n’ Pepa”.
Winehouse has a number of “old school” tattoos of naked women on her body. When asked about them, she was quoted as saying “I like pin-up girls. I’m more of a boy than a girl. I’m not a lesbian, though — not before a sambuca anyway.”
I know Kelly doesn’t get it right all the time. Sometimes her Frankenstein-esque makeup scares even me. But you have to hand it to her for trying. I think she’s great, actually — she is honest about who she is & she manages to pull off a lot of different looks with considerable aplomb. She’s super-cute & very stylish.
I think she has come from a distinct disadvantage: while her family is wealthy, her father (Ozzy) & mother (Sharon) are hardly paragons of class or dignity. Of course, sometimes she says stupid things on camera or gives the appearance of being despicable — but if you point a camera at most 20 year olds, you are going to get similar results. It also looks like she struggles with her weight a bit, & of course the press absolutely crucifies her for it, which has to be hard. I think she’s pretty cool, & she gets older she’s definitely improving, style-wise.
Who’s on your style radar?
Super-love & cupcakes,

Oooh thanks for sharing Amy Winehouse, really liked her sound!
Kelly Osbourne gets her hair right pretty damn consistently.
My style icon? Hmmm… JPG I would have to say… because he’s so joyful and playful about it.
Both of Amy’s albums are EXCELLENT, you should definitely get your hands on them. She’s a very interesting artist but very easy to listen to.
Kelly’s recent series “Turning Japanese” is so cool. It’s all over Youtube. Makes me want to go to Japan even more than I already do! Plus she looks great throughout the whole thing.
JPG is pretty amazing. I just love that he can get away with it…
I like Amy Winehouse, her voice is very rich and full. And she seems kinda crazy, too, which is always fun.
As for my own style icon? Carrie Bradshaw/SJP, of course, but also Anita Pallenberg, Francoise Hardy, Jenny Lewis, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Zooey Deschanel and Penny Lane from Almost Famous.
Kelly Osbourne is very pretty.
My style icons would be Audrey Hepburn, Twiggy, and just about every Pin-up model.
Haha that show made me love kelly Osbourne.
Style icons? Strawberry Shortcake and Dita von Teese.
I am in LOVE with Amy Winehouse.
I had tickets to see her in London last week but she canceled as she was too drunk…..so its been moved to May 28th and i will try and take lots of photos of her and send you some of her looking amazing!
It’s so sad that she has such amazing talent and style but is a complete junkie.Have you seen photos of her skin close up?
She is full of boils from all the meths she takes.
Ame’s lives 10 mins from me – we sometimes shop at the same grocery store and apparently have similar tastes in Vino!!!
Style icon for me right now… no one.
Oh mah GODDDD Robin! I should send you some of my business cards so next time you see her you can tell her I want her babies!
& yes Miss Joleeeeeen, I definitely want photographs. I hope she isn’t actually a junkie, that’s really sad.
Nah she’s ain’t a meth-head… dabbles in pot and coke, smokes like it’s going out of fashion and enjoys a glug of booze most days but she’s certainly not a meth-head! She does have awful skin though!!! Do send business cards over if you want!!!
amy winehouse is wonderful! she’s one of my current style icons, alongside russell brand & noel fielding (both british comedians – many of my style icons are flamboyant men as opposed to women), chris corner from iamx/sneaker pimps, & maja ivarsson from the sounds.
xo
I loooovee Amy Winehouse’s new album… it’s such a great combination of Motown and modern. And I don’t know who has seen the movie Volver (it’s incredible, btw) but I’ve been thinking a lot about Penelope Cruz’s character and the interesting outfits she wears throughout the film.
Is it rEeeEeEeeally immature of me to think that “Volver” is a totally unfortunate name for, well, anything?
Not that I’ve seen it. Might do though!
I guess my style icons would be Mary Kate and Ashley and Cory Kennedy. Although recently I have removed myself from their online fan sites cause I feel like I’m not being original enough.
Anyways, about the whole “Volver” thing, it reminds me of the word “vulva”. Oops.
It’s difficult for me to choose just a couple of style icons, because I take inspiration from such a wide variety of people. As of right now: Christina Aguilera, Audrey Hepburn, Dita Von Teese, Victoria Beckham, the Olsen twins, Gwen Stefani, Cate Blanchett, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sienna Miller. Sometimes they make mistakes, but I think it’s admirable when people aren’t afraid to take fashion risks.
i luh-uh-uhve amy winehouse!
my gay best friend and i used to sing along to ‘in my bed’ on repeat. :D
so much love for seeing kelly here! i loved her from the second i saw the osbournes on tv, & have adored her since! she’s pretty much the reason why i dared to dress differently from my friends.
personally i’m keeping an eye on rinko kikuchi – she keeps turning up on the worst dressed lists, but i really like her quirky style
amy winehouse! ugh, love her voice and style.
dita von teese is someone I truly look up to, stylewise and how she handles herself. she is incredibly classy. there isn’t enough class these days, believe me.
My style icon would have to be Zooey Deschanel. She is quirky, but not in that in-your-face sort of way. For me, she rarely puts a fashion foot wrong. And she’s cute to boot.
In a similar vein I like Chloe Sevigny, but I often find her committing a fashion don’t. If anyone can pull it off it would be her, but there are some clothes/accessories that even the best coat hanger can’t pull off.
My style icon is Aishwarya Rai!! :D
I know I’m about 8 months late but I’ve been reading all the old posts and I am one heck of a slow reader.
- Gala, ‘Volver’ is a Spanish word meaning to return. Something like that. And it’s not pronounced how you think, hahaha.
- I would say my style icon is Roisin Murphy. She is the most amazing person ever for sure. Sigh.. (Check out her new album too!)
I have to thank you for this site, it certainly cheers me up! And your use of colour is pretty inspirational. I myself am a fan of yellow and am sick of seeing people dressed ALL in black – how boring.
