Quotes of the Day -- 3rd October 2007
[ 4 October 2007 ]
All of these are from the fabulous Eleanor Roosevelt.
“Do what you feel in your heart to be right — for you’ll be criticized anyway.”
“Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
“Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes responsibility. For the person who is unwilling to grow up, the person who does not want to carry his own weight, this is a frightening prospect.”
“Have convictions. Be friendly. Stick to your beliefs as they stick to theirs. Work as hard as they do.”
“It is better to light one small candle than to curse the darkness.”

I particularly love the third one. I had never realized that I was the one who gave people the power to mistreat me. Now I know that I’ll only feel offended or attacked if I let their opinion count more than mine does. And I don’t think that will happen again :)
I particularly love #1.
I really like the last one! It’s completely new to me, and it sums up exactly the way I feel about people who make a habit of complaining, but don’t seem willing to take any steps to remedy the situation. I try to make it a habit to light small candles ;-)
I love the first three!
The quote below is my favorite quote by Elanor. It really means a lot to me and gives me a lot of inspiration on those days that seem so hard.
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
I like the idea of the third one but I’ve never found it works for me! I go ‘don’t give my consent!’ and feel inferior anyway. Cause it’s not them, it is me, but I can’t control it. Not that I feel inferior all the time or anything.
Numbers one, four and six are good. Someone quoted number two to me before but I didn’t know who had said it till now – and I disagree! People are the only really important thing to me. Sure, backstabbing and judging are awful, but that’s not always what talking about people involves. Ideas are a luxury and events… well they’re just not as important as people!
I love the thing on the wall in the picture. It’s so true.
I like the 2nd one, people let’s put our great minds into work :)
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
This one is one of my favorites and so so true!
The problem is often silencing the inner critic too.

she’s an absolutely amazing woman…
Regarding the second one, I think it depends what you take “discuss people” to mean.
If you take it to mean things liks “OMG did you hear what Paris Hilton did last week?”, I couldn’t agree with her more. Not necessarily even gossip or badmouthing others, just getting all up in other people’s business, especially anything petty or which doesn’t concern you. Or even just getting obessed about what your boyfriend said yesterday, how cute your baby is, etc — I think we can all agree that even if those are positive things, they don’t usually make for great conversation.
If you take it to mean all conversation regarding other people, ever, well, I don’t think even the greatest minds at all could avoid ever talking about people or events.
I really needed this today. Thanks xx
Thank you so much for posting these. I love Eleanor, she is so inspiring.
