Storage Solutions

[ 10 November 2007 ]

My sweet nonpareils, it appears that I am amassing quite a collection of earrings & sunglasses. This is fabulous, of course, except for the fact that I have no real way of storing them, & it is driving me mad. I am very keen to have all my sunglasses on display — just keeping them in their cases in a drawer somewhere isn’t going to cut it. & my earrings keep getting tangled up, which is maddening!

So, tell me — how do you store yours?

Your advice & ingenuity is appreciated hugely!

Super-love & cupcakes,
Gala <3

  1. My earring stand is basically just a mannequin in a dress with metal ‘loops’ coming out of the top for you to hang your earrings. I love it because it is pretty AND I can store my hook earrings on it, which I couldn’t do with the stands I used to have (the kind with annoying criss-crosses that made it a bitch to get earrings on or off it).

  3. I keep my dangly earrings on a long chain nailed to my wall – on the 2 nails holding it up I hang my layering, bohemian and charm necklaces – smaller ones go on a mannequin stand look Trisha is talking about it. I keep my stud earrings in a little giftbox at the moment.

  4. When i was younger my mum used to have a gourgeous triangle shaped summery scarf in the most wonderful colour, which she nailed to a wall by her dresser and then poked her hundreds of earrings through the material in their pairs.
it looks incredible – if done well.

  5. I stick my earrings through the cloth on my lampshade (it’s sort of pleated stuff stretched over a plastic form). I dont have too many sunglasses, but I think it’d be super fun to get those shoe hanger things that you put on doors and use it for sunglasses! Get a clear one, so you can see your glasses immediately. :)

  6. I have these cork board squares that I’ve stuck onto my wall because I wanted to hang a clock. (I live in a place where you can’t nail anything into the walls). I had one leftover and decided to use it for my earrings. It also works well to hold necklaces and headbands with pushpins.

That, and you can hang a second one right next to it, and instant bulletin board to remind yourself about things, and to just have a place to post inspirational notes. :D

  7. I pin my jewellery to cardboard in picture frames. A friend has a similar setup with mesh (black shadecloth!) in a picture frame.

For your glasses – maybe hang up a nice length of ribbon at each end and fold the glasses over it . . . ?

  9. To be honest, everytime I try a fancy new way of storing earrings and what not, I never keep to it & my earrings end up on the floor. Oops.
However in the past I’ve had one of those nifty earring holders, which didn’t look too bad. Also I got into the habit of putting them into the little holes on my speakers, which was probably really bad for the sound quality but it looked pretty cool!

  10. I have earring trees and other organizers that I got at Claire’s and Icing. They work great and look nice on my dresser.

I only have a few sunglasses, so I keep them in a drawer in their cases. If I had more, I’d put them into plastic shoe boxes. I love those things. I use them for everything, including storing my shoes.

By the way, we have a series on organization at theBargainQueen.com that you might be interested in.

  11. My suggestion?
I had a heap of sunglasses and i didnt have anywhere to keep them, my best friend works in a clothing store, and asked the manufactures of the sun glass company to send a new one as ‘it broke’ =P
they sent a new one.. and now i have a place for the 50 gunlasses i own..

    SWEET!

  12. the best thing for earrings is getting some of that foam stuff they use at florist’s for flower arrangements, it’s relatively cheap, you can put it in a box and your earrings slot right in…... it gets worn out after a while, though. Otherwise, little pillboxes have worked for one of my friends… she bought some with the days of the week written on them and would sort out her jewellery for the week. (NOTE: this is only good if you organize your clothes/jewellery in advance. If you’re like me and choose your outfits impulsively, this will drive you insane after a few days.)

  13. I use earring racks/earring trees or earring frames to display earrings. As for my sunglasses… there were these bars meant to serve as magazine racks on my giant desk. I already had somewhere else to store my magazines, so now I dangle my sunglasses from the bars!

    DEMONSTRATION:
    http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/2672/bedroomdeskou5.jpg

I left some magazines on the bottom bar to show how it would look as a magazine rack. As for the rest of the bars, tiny paper clamps actually serve as stoppers on either side to prevent the sunglasses from sliding off. I had a few friends who loved this method, but didn’t have my desk with the ‘magazine rack’, so I sent them down to Howards Storage (at Melbourne Central) to get those towel rails you can hang from the back of your door. They look something like this:

    http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/5633/howardstoragetowelrailssq9.jpg

The picture doesn’t quite show it, but no drilling is required as the rail has clamps that just grip the top of your door. Personally, I use them to display my belts and scarves, but they can also be used to hang necklaces, sunglasses etc.

    <3 Natalie Faye · Nov 10, 08:27 PM · #
  14. I’ve also used the earrings in a frame method. I took a piece of cardboard which i had spraypainted and had done some pre-made holes in it and stuck it in a glass-less frame. Looks uber cute in a bedroom. Also for necklaces, I’ve purchased a tie rack where my necklaces can hang without intertwining. Ditto for belts :) As for scarves, I’ve bought a long, tall glass vase and folded my scarves to layer in it. It effortlessly adds color to a room :)

  15. Right now, most of my hook earrings are hooked onto the rim of a plastic margarita glass full of perfume samples and lipsticks. It’s on top of a jewelry box… that I haven’t even opened up. (The jewelry box itself is on top of my dresser.)

I bet you could do the same with your emptied decorative candle jars (with stud earrings inside), or, naturally, any sort of fabulous glassware you should so desire to display.

  20. A fishing tackle box is great for earrings, but that’s if you want them stacked away. I get clear fishing wire and secure it across the wall then simply hang my jewels over it.

For sunglasses, nothing beats an actual sunglasses holder (like the ones you see sunglasses on display at markets etc.) so approach your closest sunglasses dealer/market stall and see if they’ll order you one!

  21. Hey Gala!

For the sunglasses, well, I only use one pair and i have around 4 (i know, im lame), but i try to find like nailed hooks and i have a wall i display them on. probably not such a great way to keep tidy, but oh well!

as for earrings, theres this thing at claires i think thats an earing holder. its designed in a flower and has hundreds of holes in it that you can stick earrings through, and a round-ish plate at the bottom that if any of them fall off, they can fall into that.

hope that helped a bit! (probably didnt)

oh and ps- i tried to do a blog like yours, except mine sucks. lol.

  27. I have a craft box with about 40 different small compartments in the top and half that many larger compartments in the bottom (the top is a removable tray). Earrings go in the top part, necklaces/bracelets/anklets/etc in the bottom.

The advantage is that I have pretty much one compartment for each type of earring (dinosaur studs, lizard loops, fish earrings), so they’re easy to find. The disadvantage is that I have a WHOLE BUNCH of earrings, so it’s kind of confusing to look at the whole shebang.

But! I can close the kit up when I have to move it to dust. And it’s nice and industrial-looking—the inside trays are clear plastic, while the outside box is a sort of brushed steel.

Plus, the box was US$5 on sale. Can’t beat it.

  29. For earrings: Mass amounts of tulle streched into whatever shape you like and the earrings poked through the holes.

For sunnies: I like the plastic heads that you use for wigs, sticking the sunnies on to those, although this would take up TONS of space if you had a lot…

  30. a friend of mine made me a funky shaped frame with mesh filling it to hook my earrings into.
i have a small jewellery box for studs and hoops.
as for sunglasses, i loop them over the top of my curtains (but mine are constantly open so this might not work for you?).

  31. For earrings, my sister used to make them by the ton, and she got really pretty and/or colourful wine glasses to hook them onto.
I guess for sunglasses, all you need is a surface with numerous hooks sticking out to hang them off.
Well, good luck! And just out of curiousity, how many pairs of sunglasses, DO you have?

  32. For jewelry: I brought an old frame (a huge, baroque-looking one), painted it shiny black and glued a piece of textured (to hide the holes) fabric to its back. I just stick the earrings in the fabric, and use safety pins to hang necklaces etc…

I personally can’t use earrings (I hate my skin :( but I just can’t :(), but when I tried, I put them in an old scarf; I just pierced it and let the earrings hang there :P I once saw a very cool way to hang them-in a vinylum disc. I guess you need some nails to make the holes, but it look awesome. Where I live they sell this speciall plastic hangers too, I guess you can search for something like it too ;)

  35. I have a wooden jewellary tree and a wooden necklace stand I made myself. I use them for costume and everyday jewellary.
There is space for necklaces, bracelets, rings, broaches and earrings – One of the ‘branches’ is a thin piece of wood, shaped to look pretty with a whole bunch of tiny holes drilled in. There is a double shelf space at the bottom too – buttons, lip stuff and crystals live there.

For sunglasses I like the idea of a washing line type thing – just hang your sunglasses over. If you used something gorgeous for the ‘line’ itself it could look really pretty and you could even use pegs to hang necklaces, pictures or other things on too. Beautiful!

  36. Earrings are the one thing I constantly receive, never have too many of, & want to show the world all the time! I have two earring trees (one that friend made for me & one that I found at a tag sale that is shaped like a strawberry) & a GIANT jewelry rack, but it is not enough. I have a piece of velvet that I poke earrings through, I hang them on the edges flowerpots sitting on my windowsill, stick them through the ears of rag dolls on my shelves. It may actually be a disease.

As for sunglasses, I’m a fan of hanging them by one leg over a dangling bit of ribbon or string. Mine are strung across a window, & beneath them is my collection of 3D glasses. It is quite the optical awesomeness.

    Stay cool

  40. Bend paper clips so they make a hook-like S shape, then stick a brass thumbtack through the top “loop” so the bottom sticks out. Viola, instant (and super cheap) jewelry hooks.

  41. Wow these ideas are awesome. Love the coloured martini glass idea!
Although I’m living out of a backpack at the moment and all my earings are in a plastic container – before I left NZ I had a tall set of black shelves. I just pinned a string of bright cotton accross it just under the top shelf, kinda like a mini clothes line for my earings. It worked pretty well!

Sorry, I can’t help you on the sunnies part though – I only have one pair and they appeared in Canada broken :-(

  43. To organize my glasses, I went out and bought an extendable clothes hanger (a lot of fishing wire wound up into a little ball with stick on the tip and on the case). I stuck one end to my wall, and attached it to the other end of the room. Whenever I finish wearing a pair of glasses, I just slid one over the string and let them dangle. I’ve also hung cards, necklaces, (clip-on) earrings, and magazine clipouts on the same rope. It looks really pretty and eclectic, and only costs about $7.

  44. I work as a jewellery buyer so I have masses of accessories! I used to have a big canvas that I painted in pretty colours, and I pierced holes in it and hung all of my gorgeous big chandelier earrings on that. It hung on the wall like a piece of art.

I keep all of my other jewellery in a make-up artists box – one that folds open and then all the trays extend out. (But that is also overflowing now so I might have to try some of the ideas above!)

Sunglasses I dont really store though – I leave them wherever I took them off!

  45. My earrings are displayed on the wall on a long ribbon of lace I’ve nailed horizontally, my necklaces are hung on tiny nails strategically pounded into the wall above my vanity, I love it!

If you’re sort of crafty, you could get two same-size embroidery hoops and staple or glue chicken wire around them to make a cylinder. Attach a single wire to criss-cross the opening at the top and hang from the ceiling, then put ribbon or something fun around the edges to conceal where the chicken wire is attached. If you’re extra adventuresome, hang over a bare light bulb that hooks into the ceiling (like a hanging lamp). You could then hang sunglasses or even necklaces through the chicken wire and have a chandelier! (You could use mesh to do the same for your earrings, probably).

  46. for earrings: I have a bookshelf with an arched, rather than a flat top, and I’ve hung loops of chain from the arch and suspended my long earrings from the links. they look pretty cool dangling there and I can easily see them all at once… my non-dangly earrings I keep in a little box, but they don’t tend to tangle too much so that’s okay.

(then again, I don’t know how many pairs you have so a few bits of chain may be completely inadequate for your purposes XD)

for sunglasses, well, I don’t really have that many so I tend to keep them in weird places, like perched on the head/over the face of a big stuffed Hello Kitty (she looks quite glamorous XD) For you… maybe something sort of like a leather envelope or credit card holder (like the slots in a wallet) only wall-mounted and bigger… one arm of the glasses can be tucked down inside, snugly enough that the weight of the glasses doesn’t them fall, but not so tight that they get damaged when you take them out? it just seems safer than anything where they’re e.g. hanging from a string or balanced on a hook under the bridge.

p.s. I’m looking for a storage solution for crazy little hats… some of them are kinda structured or have feathers (!!) so squashing is not an option, but I hate how they’re getting dusty. thoughts?

  47. I have a massive collection of earrings and for that I use my jewelry box.

As for sunglasses: remember the idea you liked about the banners for rooms? Just create a banner you like, pin up photos or bits of magazines you adore, maybe art and Christmas ornaments and then put your sunglasses on it too. You could do a themed banner (or several) or do a banner that’s like a time line of various periods you like and put the sunglasses with the period they identify most with.

  54. The best way to store earings is to buy an earing holder. it will basically be a metal mesh thet you pin your earings too / thread through. here is an example, although it isnt a very pretty one:

if you go somewhere like spotlight they usually sell cute little ones in the shape of something or with a nice border.

  60. I picked up two interesting things to deal with sunglasses and earrings. The first was a Christmas present, it’s a wire elephant. The wires run horizontal so I can hang my earrings on that. Although I wish I had gotten a bigger one because he’s starting to get taken over. His tusks are also useful for hanging my rings on.

The second thing I brought which I intended to use for my clothes that I throw on the floor (shame on me). Is a wire dummy minus the head, arms and legs and in the shape of a woman. It’s really useful because it has so many bits and spaces to hang everything off. At the moment I’ve got all my sunnies hanging near the neck area and scarves and bags on the shoulders.

I wanted something different rather than boxes etc… I got the bust from a homewares shop in WA and the elephant from a smaller funky little shop in Subiaco.

  63. i once found an article on storing glasses i think in one teen mad ages ago..

anyway the idea is to get canvas and either paint it or cover it in cool fabric.

measure out the size on your sunnies and make slits in the canvas to poke the sunnies arms through.

and you can do this with small and large sized canvas, for added effect.

p.s you want a thick canvas so the arms of the glasses can fit snuggly on the back of the wall
would look great on a wall.

  64. While visiting a friend at her dorm, and being a broke college student she had to be pretty creative with how she stored her jewelry and also large collection of sunglasses.

So we took one square out of a set of box square wire grids that are popular for assembling and storing stuff in your closet, we just took one of them, pinned it to the wall and its a great place to just let her jewelry, earrings and sunglasses hang of.

this is as best of an example of the grid rack i’m talking about:

just take one of the squares and hang it against a wall, I guess pin them together would create an even bigger one too.

  65. I have a vintage Antler suitcase (slate grey “leather”, purple silk lining, perfect condition including a key – $5 from an opshop) that sits in the corner of my room and contains all of my belts/scarves/hair ribbons etc in the main section, my brooches and badges are pinned into the top compartments, and my earrings are hung over a pocket.

  66. I also have lots of earring and what I do is to put them on a large piece of fabric on the inside of my closet’s doors. That way I can see them all at the same time and even decide which ones I’ll use with the clothes I’ll use. I hope this helps you.

  67. for earrings:
my dad cut me an old record in half and i used a hot needle to make many small holes into the plastic. afterwards, i only had to glue a little piece of cardboard to the back to make a stand and push my earrings through the holes. voilĂ  – the perfect earring storage was finished!

  68. I have a friend on livejournal who stores her jewelry on oven rack things that she attached to the wall. She has maaaaassive amounts of jewelry and it’s really amazing to see pictures of.

I bought a bunch of suction cups with hooks attached, and used them to hang my necklaces on the left and right sides of a three-section foldy mirror I have. It was really handy, they were right next to the mirror so I could see what I looked like. I had to take them down recently though because my cat started to play with them all the time and they were getting broken.

  69. I keep mine in a 28 day pill-box. There is a little square compartment for each day, and each compartment can keep a pair of dangly earrings, or about 4 pairs of ear-studs, a necklace. Its super handy, and really doesn’t clutter up at all.

  70. I use one of those fabric shoe holders ( the ones that you hang over the inside of your wardrobe ) and pop each box of sunnies into one of those and i pin a picture of what pair it is to the outside with a vintage dress makers pin . Its the best way i have found to keep them organised .. a friend of mine does the same but uses one of those clear pocket shower curtains and hangs it in her living room not only displayin her sunnies in there cases ( or without ) but favourite gift cards , necklaces and threadless tees .

  73. I use one of those dress mannquins too, mine looks like this: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=7659530

If you browse around their website they have one of Marylin Monroe in her trademark 7-year-itch white dress!

There’s also all those mini-closets things you can get, some of them are very well decorated, with glass doors so you can see your jewelry inside…

  74. hello gala! i keep my earrings hung up on a heavy sheet of paper that i’ve decorated with a ribbon border…they look so pretty hung up on a plain old tack on the wall!

  76. I have a lot of earrings, and a lot of random crap laying about my house. In an attempt to organize both, i found a broken picture frame and I removed the class, then I stapled in some fishnet…and then I hung my earing on it – you can see it here partially finished:
    http://www.litost.net/images/earing%20holder.jpg

I still need to sand down the frame itself, but it’s been really great for keeping earrings together, organized and on display. I’m thinking of making some more in different shaped frames and different colored fishnet and grouping them together as a efficient art installation in my room (:

  77. Dear Gala, happy icing day…sorry for me I had no real opportunity to celebrate it…I’m stuck at home preparing an exposition and sutdying math…

For earring I have this little pice of a net-like fabric (with holes in it. Duh. lol xD)
and there you can hang your earring…and yuo can decorate the border however you like…you can nail it to the wall or to a clothing rack…

for sunglasses I’d use ribbon o a colorful yarn to make lines in my dressing room or something like that.

For little earrings, lke studs…I’d suggest a jewerly box, Go crazy looking at antique stores!

    infinite x’s and o’s…

  78. You need a jewelry tree! I use Manzanita branch, in a clear vase filled with river rocks. Earrings and necklaces hang all over the branches, making it easy to pair them together and hang them so they won’t tangle. It’s also a nice, natural addition to your bedroom or dressing room!

  79. All of my earrings live in this little pink plastic jewelry box I got in a Happy Meal at the McDonalds located in Zoo Atlanta back in 10th grade. =]

And my sunnies are in this little plastic thingy that you would usually put inside a school locker to hold pencils and such. Its blue with dasies on it!

  80. I keep my bangles, earrings and broaches in old Valentines Day Chocolate boxes. It always feels particularly lovely when I open up a heart shaped, velvet covered box and find beautiful treasures waiting for me.

I only have 2 pairs of sunnies.. so I’m not much help in that department!

  81. i have an earring stand, like the one here: http://www.displayimporter.com/products/DS-030.html

my grandma makes jewelry and she uses them for her displays – she gave me one to keep my earrings organized. i love it! i’m not forever searching for a pair and i end up wearing a bigger variety of jewelry because i can actually SEE it!

  84. This is a bit late but i use one of those old chains for clipping toys up to store my sunnies – it hangs off my curtains – I don’t know if you can buy them anymore but you should be able to get plasic or metallic chain with loops big enough from a hardware store.
To store my earrings I hang them on the edge of cocktail glasses with the studs in the glasses.
