I skimp when buying:
Underwear (the stuff in the children’s department is far cuter than most of the women’s stuff) & sunglasses (I try them on in-store & then buy them on Ebay for 1/3 the price, typically). Other than that, usually I am pretty happy to pay for quality.
I splurge when buying:
Hmm, almost everything? If only I was a good vintage shopper. I don’t have the patience or inclination to scour vintage stores, unfortunately.
I always break this fashion rule:
Combining pink & red. Wearing stockings with open-toed shoes. Underwear or sleepwear as a major part of my outfit.
I never break this fashion rule:
Um… pshhh.
Must have item for Winter 2006:
Huge slouchy bag full of treasures, jaw-dropping hairstyle, pale foundation, futuristic minidresses & enormous shoes.
Favorite store:
Christian Louboutin on Fifth Avenue, NYC! & Patricia Field in Soho. Ha.
Style icon:
Diana Vreeland + Carrie Bradshaw!
Most cherished item:
Black Macbook tied with my Nikon D80 camera.
Favorite item of clothing:
I love my Kate Sylvester pink silk dress, & my black plastic Alexandre Herchcovitch for Melissa wedges, & all my headscarves!
Favorite stylish movie:
I am not a big movie watcher. Marie Antoinette was pretty great, though. I hear good things about Grey Gardens, too.
Guilty pleasure:
Guilt is for jerks!
Describe your personal style:
Autistic-five-year-old-diving-into-a-birthday-cake chic. Or um, your-opinion-on-my-outfit-means-very-little-to-me chic?!
I feel best wearing:
High shoes of any description. I wear flats maybe one day a week at most.
Personal style quirk:
I draw a beauty-spot on every day. I consider eye-masks to be appropriate “going out” wear. I only have one ear pierced (& really it is a tunnel which has mostly closed up).
Most overrated item:
Denim. I know, jeans are the most comfortable thing ever, but they never make me say “wow”.
Most underrated item:
Sunscreen. Keep your skin young-looking & non-leathery!
Most stylish city:
New York & Black Rock cities ;D
Never caught wearing:
Uggs or Crocs. Never say never, but those are just hideous.
When I was in high school I wore:
I was a teenage goth. New Rock boots, striped stockings, that kind of thing. Eep.
Shine your own shoes?
Yes! But most of my shoes aren’t the kind you shine.
Favorite fashion magazine:
Lula, maybe, though it could be much better. I love to buy magazines but I don’t have any favourites really, most of the time I am very disappointed by them.
Favorite other magazine:
iCiNG ;D
Cologne, skincare, perfume:
Um, skincare & perfume!
I always dress my best for:
Everyday. I refuse to dress down!
Super-love & cupcakes,

What Do You Spend Money On?

I skimp when buying:
hmm… underwear? Hello kitty underwear tends to be pretty affordable, and the stuff in charlotte russe is cute too. & tights, costume jewelry (fake pearls for four dollars!)… I’m not sure what else.
I splurge when buying:
anything and everything! It’s absolutely terrible. I once spent four hundred dollars intended for travel expenses on clothes and makeup… in two days. it was mainly at a mall with really cheap chain stores, which I think just makes this worse.
I always break this fashion rule:
.. most of them. The ones about wearing pink and red, wearing sandals with tights, pretty much anything I want to. I’m not really aware ov most fashion rules, because I’m a stupid teenager and I’m not going to care for a good three years or so.
I never break this fashion rule:
… I really haven’t any idea. I guess wearing things that are too tight, stuff that doesn’t suit me, the like.
Must have item for Winter 2007:
pale skin. (but I do this in summer too.) patterned tights, neon tights, legwarmers and heels, miniskirts, layering things with dresses, cute earmuffs, fur coats, matching scarves to your outfit, good hair.
Favorite store:
hmm… charlotte russe, but only for accessories! & actually, I love the new incarnation ov rave (“lola”), but it’s not online yet. Le sigh.
Style icon:
haven’t got one~ I guess any art by ai yazawa is a big inspiration to me.
Most cherished item:
gateway laptop, my new camera (not a very good camera, but that’s okay), & my XM helix. :>
Favorite item of clothing:
I really really love my hello kitty bag! & all my leggings, my black tunic hoodie, and the only pair ov steve madden wedges that are decently made. (which obv they don’t sell any more, because…they…suck now.)
Favorite stylish movie:
I really like tim burton movies. And Amelie, Lola Rennt, and Love & Pop.
Guilty pleasure:
I don’t get guilty!
Describe your personal style:
Spoiled-90s-eight-year-old-crossed-with-retro-chic.
I feel best wearing:
dresses! Skirts! Things that don’t call attention to my hips! (hahaha.)
Personal style quirk:
I dress at least ten years older than my age. Boots go with most everything I own. I don’t usually wear jeans or pants ov any kind. I like to wear jewels on my cheek. I wear my bangs pretty short and cut straight across. I match my body jewelry to my clothes and hair, and while we’re on the subject I have a weirdly uneven ratio ov piercings on my left ear compared to my right.
Most overrated item:
those terrible looking giant bags with buckles! And jeans, and sweatshirts/tshirts.
Most underrated item:
lipstick! Nobody wears good makeup any more, everyone tans and throws on some creepily pale lipgloss. I think it looks terrible.
Most stylish city:
new york, Chicago, Tokyo, and berlin.
Never caught wearing:
ugg boots, overpriced badly made clothing from Abercrombie and the like. I wish I could say more, but in the past I’ve been victim to a lot ov bad trends.
When I was in high school I wore:
I am in high school! Hahaha. So I wear what I wear now.
Shine your own shoes?
yes! But I usually forget, and anyhow it seems silly to do because a lot ov my shoes are fabric or neon.
Favorite fashion magazine:
I’m not sure. I’d like to find a good one. I like to read better homes and gardens, but not for clothes; it has really cute ideas for organizing your life. (god I sound old.)
Favorite other magazine:
….iCiNg. No, really! Your site is addictive.
Cologne, skincare, perfume:
Ehm. No cologne, but skincare & perfume are constantly changing! I’m going to buy some lush when I’m on vacation though.
I always dress my best for:
always! I hate looking sloppy.

Something fancy.

Ughh…“Scene” stuff. I hate scene kids with a passion.

I agree, lipstick (RUSSIAN RED!).
♥ Most stylish city:
?
♥ Never caught wearing:
Skanky clothing, gangsta clothing, or anything “normal”.
♥ When I was in high school I wore:

♥ Shine your own shoes?
No :[. I’m too lazy.
♥ Favorite fashion magazine:
Teen Vogue.
♥ Favorite other magazine:
Vogue?
♥ Cologne, skincare, perfume:
Cologne stinks! But floral scented perfume is good and some vaseline and cetaphil are good enough for me. Plus a moisturizing sunscreen lotion as a makeup base in the morning.
♥ I always dress my best for:
Daily! No matter what.
♥ I skimp when buying: stockings, tights, knee socks – they generally don’t last long. But i buy most of my clothing used, so some people would consider that skimping…
♥ I splurge when buying: lingerie & jeans are one of the FEW things i buy new. Occassionally, amazing vintage dresses & amazingly well-done one-of-a-kind items like Gisele
♥ I always break this fashion rule:
wearing slips as outerwear. wearing many bright colours.
♥ I never break this fashion rule:
i don’t USUALLY like wearing gingham. or navy blue & black together. But i’m wearing gingham today, so there’s always possibility of it changing.
♥ Must have item for Winter 2006:
my pink roots touched up (hey, this costs enough to be an item), a new knee-length taylored coat with a faux fur collar, black simple fuck-me boots, an entire shopping spree at sockdreams.com, a flowy black magic woman gypsy skirt in black & chocolate brown, an endless parade of interesting armwarmers & baubles.
♥ Favorite store:
Vintage Avenger in Arcata, Hidden Treasures in Topanga Canyon, Soap Plant Wacko in Hollywood, Brat in Santa Monica… I’m sure there’s more.
♥ Style icon:
Witch Baby + Anais Nin + Marilyn Monroe + Morticia/Gomez/Wednesday Addams + Frida Kahlo + Carrie Bradshaw (fastidious fan – especially of season 3+ styles)
♥ Most cherished item: my notebooks.
♥ Favorite item of clothing: it varies daily. Right now? i like my mint creme cashmere cardigan, my italian lace camisole, my red polka dot halter dress & my cupcake pajamas that match my hair perfectly!
♥ Favorite stylish movie: I LOVE the set design in But I’m a Cheerleader. Not my favourite, but had to mention. I’m big on Amelie, as well. stylistically, the dreadlocked twins in the second matrix film? yes! Let me go look at my netflix queue. Ah! The Life Aquatic & the Thief, the cook, his wife & her lover.
♥ Guilty pleasure:
occassionally, i feel bad if i spot something i love in an uber generic, overly trendy, sweatshop produced store. I don’t like the fact that Victoria’s Secret makes bras that fit me nicely that are made in cambodian sweat shops, either… but used lingerie? eck.
♥ Describe your personal style:
A burner/hippie/halloweenie fiend/former gothatician/pink cupcake/vintage seductress/rabbit pearl/giant stompy boots all had sex on a trampoline & decided to procreate & have a celabratory parade.
♥ I feel best wearing:
I also share the high heels = good sentiment. I’ve always loved anything flowy or poofy that spreads out underneath me romantically when i sit down. Ala Wendy, from Peter Pan.
♥ Personal style quirk: I wear mismatched earrings. tiny heart stickers on my face. lots of the same color, in different shades.
♥ Most overrated item: low-rise anything. The bane of my ass’ existence.
♥ Most underrated item: comfortable, amazing looking heels. Some designers REALLY need to take archetechture & engineering & apply to shoe craftmanship.
♥ Most stylish city: Need i answer this? BRC! Fashion INNOVATION!
♥ Never caught wearing: i hesitate to say never. I don’t think i’ll ever have the body to pull off low-rise + midriff baring, though. I don’t think i’d want to, either.
♥ When I was in high school I wore: i did not attend high school. I went through a grunge -> preppy -> quasi-goth phase in the years i should’ve been in high school, though.
♥ Shine your own shoes? i have yet to shine a pair of shoes in this lifetime. Gisele is going to need touch-ups, though.
♥ Favorite fashion magazine: I don’t peruse enough to have a succinct opinion. I like some of what i’ve seen in Bust, though.
♥ Favorite other magazine: I’m a big geek – i love magazines like sunset, real simple, bon appetit, national geographic, bust, juxtapoz, etc.. I wish i read more fashion magazines to know what i like, though.
♥ Cologne, skincare, perfume:
i don’t wear cologne. i own a few different perfumey things: lolita lempicka, a pikake solid perfume & a perfume oil purchased at a lingerie shop i’m quite fond of. Skincare is very simple: i do something like the OCM + a brown sugar scrub on some days, a plain washcloth scrub + badger balm moisturizer. Sometimes a virgin coconut oil lotion. My skin’s very sensitive though – i don’t even wear foundation!
♥ I always dress my best for: whenever i feel like i need it, which is often. I never hesitate to “over dress.”
I absolutely adore your style and I’m not quite sure if this is the right place to ask but I’m completely sick of dressing down and jeans and such. I want to start wearing skirts and dresses and dress pants. I’d like to stick to black and red and white if possible. Any suggestions on where to start with completely re-vamping my wardrobe?
Jeezus, it’s so funny. I always feel like going shopping whenever I read your articles. Not that theres any decent fashion stores that I like in Wellington. I always find it very difficult to find things that fit me (because I am so small) and that I like! So I always dress down. The other day though I went completley mad and bought a Red Outfit. Red shorts, shoes, Rich Girl Red nailpolish and a little Red hoodie (so I“m now called little red riding hood ~ ha! figured as much). Cool survey, I’m terrible at filling them out unfortunatley.
Hi Allie! That’s definitely a topic I can write about, thank you for the suggestion! I’ll have something up in the next couple of days.
Hi Gala. I don’t know any other way to ask but through here, so, sorry! =S I was just wondering, have you seen “Moulin Rouge” with Eward McGregor and Nicole Kidman? Well if you’ve had the chance, I love the style and like the fashion and trends I guess of the movie. Like how it’s all kinda like old-fashioned, kinda messy, but completely fun and colourful! =D So I was wondering, how do I adopt that style (in cloth and in like lifestyle I guess?) Another example would be the movie “Across the Universe”. If you see the room and the designs and everything is just awesome (in my opinion =]). So how do I adopt those trends?
