Style Tips -- 28th October 2008

[ 28 October 2008 ]

Prince

<3 If you’re in America, buy enough pairs of hallowe’en pyjamas to last you the rest of the year. If you’re not, have a friendly American buy some for you!

<3 Try a Lush toner tab: fill a bowl with hot water, drop the tab in, place your face over the steam & cover your head with a towel. Instantly soft, beautiful & refreshed skin. I am a fan, & at only $1.50 a pop, it’s hard to resist!

<3 Write yourself some weekly resolutions!

<3 Purchase a good water bottle. I just did — mine is by SIGG & is black with a white cross on the front, très Nubby!

<3 Compare ‘Heartbeats’ by The Knife & José Gonzáles & decide which version you like best. (My money’s on José.)

<3 Drink from a can with a pink straw.

<3 Develop an appreciation for Shakespeare. (For those of you who have never “got it”, check out Romeo & Juliet by Baz Luhrmann, which came out in 1996. It is amazing, & changed my perception of Shakespeare forever.)

<3 Listen to Prince all day.

Love letters & feather headdresses,

  1. Love the style tips !
No steaming for my though, I have rosacea.

    <3 eternalvoyageur · Oct 28, 12:26 PM · #
  2. Oh man, I love Halloween stuff. Pajamas? Heck yes. I also really love Halloween socks. Stripey witch kind or anything else of the sort.

    Halloween has the best stuff.

    <3 Trisha · Oct 28, 12:32 PM · #
  3. I would also suggest www.imdb.com/title/tt0120866/ Titus to anyone wanting to expand their view of Shakespeare. It’s Julie Taymor, who directed Across the Universe, and it’s freaky, weird, non-traditional, and absolutely wonderful.

    <3 Freya · Oct 28, 12:32 PM · #
  4. I adore Lush toner tabs. I use them with a face scrub and lush mask for a mini facial! Inhaling the steam makes me feel refreshed inside and out.

    <3 Chic and Charming · Oct 28, 12:35 PM · #
  5. I would also like to suggest a really fun Shakespeare inspired song by MC Lars the title is Rapbeth :) its just a silly, fun song.

    kisses Tanya

  6. Everything tastes better through a straw, don’t you agree, Ms. G?

    <3 Sal · Oct 28, 12:59 PM · #
  7. Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet should be required viewing for everyone. I am in love with it. I never ‘got’ Shakespeare until I watched it, oh it’s just amazing. So happy you reminded me of it, it’s been sitting on my shelf gathering dust so I’m gonna toddle off and watch it now. Love the style tips, I’ve been here for about a year but I’ve always been to shy to comment. Also, Halloweeeen!

    Hugs x

    <3 Vicki · Oct 28, 01:00 PM · #
  8. Oh, you got a SIGG and I know which one that is! Such a cute style.

Sidenote: If you’re in America, buy one pair of Dracula pajamas…and spend the rest of your funds on a red velvet couch to lure in the hot chicks. ;)

    <3 Nubby · Oct 28, 01:02 PM · #
  9. English graduate here, I love Shakespeare! I’ve never tried the toner tabs but Lush is wonderful so next time I’m in the store I’ll have to buy some and try them out.

    Fabulous tips as always!

    <3 Vixel · Oct 28, 01:07 PM · #
  10. In my humble opinion, you can not beat the Knife on that one – they wrote the damn thing – but I’m with you on the Baz Luhrmann R & J. Tempting simply to dress up as an angel and wait for sworn enemies to sweep you off your feet…

    <3 Emily · Oct 28, 01:09 PM · #
  11. Weird!! My favourite song is Heartbeats (used to be the Jose cover, right now it’s the Knife’s version, but my preference switches back and forth frequently) and my favourite movie is Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet.
You win so many gold stars for this post :)

    <3 Jillian · Oct 28, 01:10 PM · #
  12. Sorry, but R+J is overrated, IMHO. Now “Shakespeare in Love” on the other hand… ;)
In any case, I consider a talented English literature teacher with sense of humor and passion for his work to be superiour to any movie version – eventhough I love cinema! A good theater production could do that too. But basically, one might need some sort of introduction to Shakespeare’s works in order to start liking them, just whatever it is, is a matter of personal choice. :)

    <3 Rina · Oct 28, 01:11 PM · #
  13. Love the style tips, love Prince, love Romeo + Juliet!
    And I have a Sigg too :D

    <3 Kiewies · Oct 28, 01:12 PM · #
  14. Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet is so beautiful, and probably the first time I got introduced to Mr. DiCaprio. So pretty in that movie!

Also, can’t wait for Luhrmann’s new movie, Australia, to come out. It looks like it will be just as great visual candy as Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge.

    <3 Liz · Oct 28, 01:14 PM · #
  15. I love Shakespeare! I was just thinking the other day about how I have a degree in Shakespeare, but I never ‘use’ it. Except for the part where it fills me with joy, of course . .

    <3 Nadine · Oct 28, 01:21 PM · #
  16. Baz Luhrmann’s R+J is good, but live Shakespeare is even better, and live Shakespeare at the Globe in London is the best!

And I’m going to have to try these Lush toners (and stock up on bath ballistics before I move to a new house with no bath…)

    <3 Bridey · Oct 28, 01:23 PM · #
  17. The 1968 Romeo and Juliet is lovely too…but a bit more traditional, if that’s what you’re into.

    <3 emma · Oct 28, 01:28 PM · #
  18. Ooh, I really want to try that Lush treatment…in fact, I think I saw a Lush opening up quite near my house this past weekend!

...and I’m totally in love with purdy waterbottles!
    aliceiscurious.blogspot.com/20…

    <3 Alice · Oct 28, 01:31 PM · #
  19. Definitely the Knife version.

    <3 blepharisma · Oct 28, 02:00 PM · #
  20. Romeo + Juliet has to be my favorite adaptation n_n.

Love those steaming sessions, if I only had the time to spare… sigh.

    Kisses.

    <3 Julie · Oct 28, 02:09 PM · #
  21. Wow, that’s serious accolade to prefer a cover over an original! It’s definitely an amazing version though, both versions offer completely different things. I love them both but the original is my favourite- it’s incredible. My favourite cover has to be M.Ward’s let’s Dance- that is sheer brilliance…

Prince is one of the only artists I can genuinely listen to all day :-D

    Great tips man!

    <3 maya · Oct 28, 02:13 PM · #
  22. My mom teaches Shakespeare so I grew up going to the plays and watching the movies. Baz Luhrmanns’s R+J is amazing.. I also like the teen comedy updates such as 10 Things I Hate About You (Taming of The Shrew) or the dark comedy Scotland, PA (Macbeth). Shakespeare is all about pop story-telling. :]

    <3 Annie Spandex · Oct 28, 02:22 PM · #
  23. The Knife version is excellent for bounding about the house getting ready to go out. Jose comes in the next morning with your mascara smeared on your face and a steaming cup of green tea.

    <3 crosby · Oct 28, 02:22 PM · #
  24. Trisha — I concur! I haven’t been able to find any cute hallowe’en pyjamas for me though, & I’ve been looking really hard! Let me know if you find any that you think I would be into!

    Chic & Charming — Amen!

Sal — Mos’ def’! I always wanted to try that Sofia Coppola champagne stuff that came in a can… I would definitely drink that through a straw.

Vicki — I remember seeing it when I came out & absolutely LOVING it. (& no, not because of Leonardo Dicaprio, haha, I never got the obsession with him!) But then I was kind of a nerd in school, Shakespeare was one of my favourite subjects, so ;>

Nubby — I love it & every time I look at it I think of you! xxxxxx

Emily — Ahhh, I think I listened to The Knife’s version too many times & I can’t stand it anymore, but Jose’s cover is totally glorious!

Liz — Do you know anything about the story of Australia? The title alone totally turns me off. Bleh! Makes it sound, um, dusty. Haha!

Nadine — I didn’t know you had a degree in Shakespeare! Geez! You little genius!

maya — I have been on a major Prince kick recently… So much love!

Annie Spandex10 Things I Hate About You is one of my favourite movies of all time. SO GOOD!

crosby — Awesome, I totally agree!

  25. wow, i must be clairvoyant. i wrote up a big list of resolutions & stuck ‘em to my wall just last night! i’m going to..

    do yoga twice a day
get to bed at 1030 and wake up at 615
finish up my planning for nanowrimo!

  26. My favourite bit of Shakespeare ever:
“As is the morning silver-melting dew
Against the golden splendour of the sun!”

    From The Rape Of Lucrece

I had the complete works, and just opened it randomly and that line just jumped at me, I’ve been obsessed with it ever since.

    <3 Jazra · Oct 28, 02:33 PM · #
  27. I love the idea of drinking from a can with a pink straw! I’m always tempted to carry a pack of straws (the bendy kind, please) with me for using when I’m out and about. Just because. ;)

    <3 Casey · Oct 28, 02:36 PM · #
  28. I love stocking up on Halloween goodies (I’ve already got some Wicked Witch socks!). And the pajamas will be a hoot to find and buy.

Shakespeare! If you want some good old-fashioned dramarama, that’s what Julius Caesar is for, right? :D

    <3 stifledlaughter · Oct 28, 02:55 PM · #
  29. Dying to try those toner tabs but I’ve gotta hold back on buying from Lush right now cuz I just got a job there and I don’t get staff discount for a month! Luckily I was given over £40 of freebies on the training day!!

I haven’t seen any Hallowe’en pyjamas anywhere abouts but I’m eyeing up some Christmas ones :D

    <3 Joanne · Oct 28, 03:02 PM · #
  30. I LOVE Romeo + Juliet. Cross-dressing!Mercutio is my all-time favorite Shakespearean character.

    <3 princess70xox · Oct 28, 03:03 PM · #
  31. Ohhh I love the pink straw idea, although I would use either purple or teal straws, they are more my colours. :)

    <3 Aiden Applegate · Oct 28, 03:28 PM · #
  32. I totally agree with the Shakespeare thing. I started reading his work when I was still in elementary school, but found a new appreciation for it when I was involved in a high school production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Thanks to that, I have a whole new understanding of Shakespeare. =) Best. Thing. Ever.

    <3 Jenn · Oct 28, 03:29 PM · #
  33. The Sofia Rosé is pretty good (I just saw something about Sofia champagne… I didn’t know they made champagne) and it comes in the prettiest bottle, which was fun to fill with clear marbles and peacock feathers.

Lush toner tabs sound awesome… It’s almost time for another Lush trip, methinks (if you order from their Amazon store, they sometimes send you extra goodies too!)...

    <3 Birdie! · Oct 28, 03:59 PM · #
  34. second the prince. what are your favorites? i’ve been listening to shockadelica (the girl must be a witch!), p control, & baby i’m a star a lot. also love erotic city, lalala hehehee, i wonder u, computer blue, automatic, u got the look, the screams of passion, nasty girl, billy jack bitch, crystal ball, darling nikki ... i wrote part of my mfa on prince, i’m sort of a psycho. have you seen his film, under the cherry moon? it is really fabulous and over the top & his love interest is a girl like you ;)

if you finish all of shakespeare, sir philip sydney’s old arcadia is likewise lovely.

    <3 roxi · Oct 28, 04:21 PM · #
  35. Dude, The Knife’s original is a gazillion times better.
Jose’s version is so sleepy-time-boring it’s like he’s Jigglypuff and waiting for me to go to sleep so he can draw on my face! FO’ REAL!

    <3 Jo · Oct 28, 05:09 PM · #
  36. I love toner tabs! The Vitamin E ones are FABULOUS. Such a cheap way of giving yourself a pampering facial. I always pop on my Love Lettuce fresh face mask afterwards- my skin loves me for it!

And I adore the Jose Gonzalez version too. Do enjoy The Knife original but Jose is one of my favourite artists.

    <3 Samantha · Oct 28, 05:12 PM · #
  37. great list! high fives on romeo & juliet (that movie had my whole heart when i was a teen), love lush, must try those tabs!

    <3 holly · Oct 28, 05:26 PM · #
  38. Love Shakespeare. I definitely recommend browsing through Filthy Shakespeare by Pauline Kiernan. Too many teachers and professors choose to gloss over the naughty bits, but I think they’re a good part of what makes Shakespeare’s writing so interesting. (Failing the desire to find the book, there are no doubt all sorts of similar websites floating around.)

    <3 Nic · Oct 28, 05:33 PM · #
  39. I’m surprised at how many of you prefer The Knife’s version! Haha. Oh well! I am firmly in the Jose camp!

    <3 Gala · Oct 28, 05:56 PM · #
  40. Oh yes everyone should really get into Shakespeare! We studied a number of his plays and sonnets in highschool. I absolutely loved it. Hamlet is my favourite so far :)

Oooo I definitely prefer Jose’s version! Can imagine myself driving along a quiet road in a beach town with this on. Also reminds of a song which would definitely be on Scrubs! :D

    <3 Leanne · Oct 28, 06:36 PM · #
  41. @ Nic- HA! Oooh, that’s a great book. My Shakespeare teacher last year practically forced us to buy that book, she talked about it so much… in my opinion, without the filthy bits it’s not really Shakespeare.

If you’re quite familiar with the story of Macbeth (+ are feeling particularly pretentious) take a look at “Scotland PA”. It’s Macbeth set in a fast food restaurant, + is more than somewhat entertaining.

    <3 Beth · Oct 28, 06:43 PM · #
  42. I love Shakespeare. I want one of those “Shakespeare is my homeboy” T shirts, they are epic. And I’m sorry to say that I could never shy away from The Knife, they are just brilliant.

    <3 Hannahbee · Oct 28, 07:34 PM · #
  43. I ♥ Prince. I have seen him live 3 times and all those times have been so great. I can listen to any of his music and I feel so much better.

    <3 Marisol · Oct 28, 08:55 PM · #
  44. I adore the knife version too! Jose one makes me weep.

I LOVE 10 things I hate about you. oh swoon. rip heathy.

I wish the lush toner tabs were available in Aus I would be so down with them :(

  45. Style Tips are my favorite!! :D

    <3 Leeann · Oct 28, 09:38 PM · #
  46. Ive been listening to Jose and The Knife Interchangeably for the past month. Jose is nice and moody, but The Knife is my lover. Her voice is amazing…

    <3 Brittan · Oct 28, 10:01 PM · #
  47. My youngest aunt makes an annual mix CD for my birthday, and the CD for my fifteenth (last years- I’m sixteen) had both Heartbeats on it. Both are seriously fab, but I have to say I agree with you. José Gonzalez’s is great.

I love your blog, by the way! My friend from New Orleans got me hooked. We are both addicted to your Daily Outfit posts. :]

    <3 Lauren · Oct 28, 10:17 PM · #
  48. Definitely checking out the toner tabs from Lush.

Winter is hell on my skin and makes it dry so it gets all flaky and the fine lines more noticable.

Need to give them a try.

    <3 Brie · Oct 28, 11:23 PM · #
  49. I love your style tips!! I’ve been a reader for quite some time, but this is my first time posting. And I must say, I am for Jose all the way!

    <3 Sonnet · Oct 28, 11:39 PM · #
  50. Good, good, good list.

Heartbeats is the song that made me fall in love with José.

The Tempest is the play that made me fall in love with Shakespeare. Have you read it? It’s truly incredible – like reading a foreign language that reveals itself to you as it unfolds. So magical, his words. =)

    <3 Sayward · Oct 29, 12:05 AM · #
  51. Oh also! For anyone interested, a great Shakespeare movie is the recent (90s?) version of Love’s Labour’s Lost. It’s an awesome playful postmodern mash-up of music and Shakespeare and it’s AWESOME!

    <3 Sayward · Oct 29, 12:09 AM · #
  52. Love your tips Gala! I have just found out that Lush is coming to my city so I will be making a dash through the doors the day it opens and stocking up on all the lovelies. I am also thinking of applying to work there but currently weighing up the pro’s and con’s of my current work situation and what it will be like next year.

Romeo and Juliet is such a fabulous film- one of my all time favourites. Thanks for reminding me about it, I may pull it out on the weekend and have a quiet night in!
    xoxo

    <3 Alla · Oct 29, 12:15 AM · #
  53. I can’t believe I nearly missed this!!! I love Prince so now you’ve inspired me to listen to him all day, thanks Gala! :D I have so many Prince songs it’s such an easy thing to do, plus it’ll bring back happy memories of when I saw him at the O2 arena in London for the 21 days gigs…he was fabulous! xxx

    <3 JodieCJ · Oct 29, 04:48 AM · #
  54. Eep! I know it’s bad form to double-post, but I totally forgot to gush about how obsessed I am with Halloween pajama pants! They’re the only kind of sweatpant-like attire I’ll be seen in public wearing!

(Old Navy usually has great ones, I’ve found, along with awesome Halloween undies!)

  55. Surely I can’t be the first one to suggest The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged?
    www.imdb.com/title/tt0301126/
    Seriously, though, fantastic.

  56. Beth — Haha, that sounds amazing!

Hannahbee — I always liked those t-shirts with a picture of Shakespeare that said “Prose Before Hos”!

Marisol — I’ve never seen him live, I would die of happy!

Lauren — Oh, thank you very much! Big kisses!

Brie — For super-dry skin, Lush’s Skin Drink moisturiser is the BEST I’ve found. I recommend it 100%. Go in & ask them for a sample, you will not be disappointed!

    Sayward — No, I haven’t! I’ll see what I can do!

Alla — You could always work there part-time & see how it goes!

Alice — Ooh, good suggestion… I’ll check it out :>

  57. In regards to Shakes, sparknotes.com has great versions of his famous plays and awesome laymen translations side by side. I fell in love with him all over again!

I just wanted to say that I am reading your site from my Sidekick in a dreadfully boring math lecture. I was wondering if you have ever consider a mobile friendlier version of the site? The loading time, while sooo worth it, is pretty killer.

    Loves!
