Tempt: A Haiku Cupcake Review

[ 26 August 2008 ]

Tempt

All cuteness aside,
This cupcake defeated me.
I ate just two bites.

Super-rich mud cake
Does not a good cupcake make.
A very sad truth.

For six dollars fifty, you
would be forgiven if you
expected more.

Dark chocolate & raspberry cupcake – $6.50 – Tempt, Wellington.

Super-love & cupcakes,
Gala <3

  2. Such a shame, though! Wellington needs a good cupcake place. (Actually, every city does.)

  3. I think I am yet to be utterly blown away by the taste of a cupcake. I always figured their appeal was more in the presentation.

    <3 witnit · Aug 26, 03:55 PM · #
  4. the cupcake sparkles
which makes the six and fifty
    completely worth it.

    <3 molly kay · Aug 26, 03:56 PM · #
  5. It’s so bad that it’s so expensive T_T. I wouldn’t pay that much for a cupcake, no matter how cute it looked.

    <3 Juls · Aug 26, 04:00 PM · #
  6. OK, now I’m glad I haven’t paid 6.50 just because it’s the only cupcake place I’ve seen in Wellington. Thanks for the review.
I’ll stick to my friends cupcakes for now, we just went and bought shiny cupcake icing stuff and proper red icing colouring from Goldings, yay.

  7. what is crap on top?
does not look vegan at all
    like hard yoghurt smeg

    <3 xhellsbellsx · Aug 26, 04:04 PM · #
  8. It is pretty, though… I bet a big glass enough glass of milk could wash down the richness. But then I don’t drink milk and am allergic to chocolate! ha, everything chocolate looks good when you can’t eat it. ;]

    Edible sparkles
Are pretty but cheap to buy…
    Not worth it, I think!

    xhellsbellsx
    Definitely not!
    It was coloured white chocolate.
    Not super-tasty.

  11. the box and cupcake looks so high-class! i wonder if it tastes as good as it looks though…

    sweet haikus man! B)

  12. At least you know now
A place with some samples might
    Hold better delights?

Good luck finding that elusive perfect cupcake ;)

  13. I could use that cash
towards a new Marc. Why eat
    when purses are fab?

    <3 Mary · Aug 26, 04:58 PM · #
  14. My, that is pricey.
And dark chocolate? Makes me glad
    I am allergic!

  15. I love chocolate cupcakes with white icing. Somehow, though, I find the store bought/bakery ones are never as good as the homemade kind. They’re always too chocolaty, too rich, too much icing, not enough icing etc. Nevertheless, I still love those delicious little darlings.

And a $6.50 splurge on a cupcake is easier on the wallet than a bank-breaking $650 splurge on shoes. So there.

    Cheers!

  16. I like the sparkles… but all sparkle and no substance (or yucky substance) is not cool :(

    <3 Scribbles · Aug 26, 05:07 PM · #
  17. Looks more like a muffin to me!! Even then a great muffin can be had for $3-$4.

    Looks good but!

I always think the best cupcakes are home made anyway.

They are small and cute and always taste so awesome that you can eat a thousand of them!!!

  18. I think some forget
    That taste must accomodate
    Looks. I am sorry.

  19. There is another place that is making cupcakes in Wellington as well… you order them by the however many.

And I thought I read in a recent Wellington paper that there is another shop opening off of Lambton Quay somewhere….. Woodward St, perhaps?

(me goes off to look… will report back…)

  20. here’s the place you can order cupcakes from…

    web.mac.com/arbelnz/iWeb/Sweet…

can’t find the other thing I was looking for (i.e. other new place selling cupcakes in Wgtn other than Tempt…)

  21. Mojo in Wellington does lovely mini cupcakes “fairy cakes”.

They are delish and perfect with a long black.

  25. Just like a website,
a cupcake must be strong in
    design AND content.

(Wait, did I just geekify a cupcake? :D)

    <3 Dara · Aug 26, 08:42 PM · #
  26. Oh, such a tragic tale! It makes me want to cry! Ummm…well…as people have already mentioned, at least their packaging is elegant and the cupcake itself makes a great picture!

A complete aside…I just got back from London, where I found a store called “Candy Cakes”...and they were HIRING! Ah, if only I could afford to drop everything and move to England to bake cupcakes! Who WOULDN’T be happy doing that?

    <3 Alice · Aug 26, 09:21 PM · #
  27. ahhh. i need to do some vegan baking stat!
on another note, i love you, love your site, love everything. you’ve even inspired me to start my own blog.
i’m sort of depressed you’re moving to new york though. less aussie content. i’m sure you’ll stay fab though. x

    <3 dakota · Aug 26, 10:52 PM · #
  28. $6.50, gosh. You can probably assume that at least a buck of that is purely because it’s in the Old Bank Arcade… They do look pretty, though.

    <3 Scarlet · Aug 26, 11:21 PM · #
  29. That might be one of the cutest cup cakes I have seen in a while!! The box tops it off – was the white topper made of white chocolate?

    You should check out:
“Cupcakes that take the cake” on flickr, some really tasty amazing looking ones are on there often :)

  30. i find myself regularly disappointed by cupcakes, i think too much effort is often put into presentation rather than taste which is a damn shame…

like ‘dakota’ you’ve also inspired my blog, which is pretty obv when you look at it: (www.studentcharade.blogspot.com)
    just so you know ;)

keep up the great work lovely x

  31. i once paid $5 for a cupcake from whole foods which was festooned with a giant purple fish shape, and got mostly the same results as you. tasted horrible, too rich to take a good stab at, and left my wallet wearing a frowny face. such a disappointment!

    <3 platinum pigeon · Aug 27, 01:52 AM · #
  32. At least you’re not TEMPTed to buy another one. :D

  33. Dear Gala you rule
    Haiku reviews are so cool
    For cupcake? No drool.

    xx

  34. I love the haikus!

I will say this: that cupcake even LOOKS formidable. The weird wavey tan thing on top? The enormous mound of sparkley frosting? Eugh.

    Hilarious post!

    <3 Dollface · Aug 27, 03:15 AM · #
  35. Great idea to write a cup cake review in Haiku form. Utterly poetic :)

    <3 Grace · Aug 27, 03:39 AM · #
  36. Sad! So pretty, and yet so unsatisfying. I feel for ya – my last cupcake from my absolute standby cupcakery was burned on the bottom. I shed bitter tears.

    <3 Sal · Aug 27, 04:33 AM · #
  37. BTW Gala,

I made a bunch of cupcakes using your vegan cupcake recipe and brought them to a music festival this summer. They were such a hit that the bands kept pausing between sets to give shoutouts to “that girl who brought those badass vegan cupcakes!” Thank you!

    Love,
    Kaitlin

  38. At Glastonbury
    Festival, I tried the most
    Delicious cupcake.

    It’s name, ‘Red Velvet’,
(Cream cheese frosting, a nice touch)
    I had to try one.

    Returning later,
    Ready to buy another,
    Alas – they’d sold out :(

    <3 Harriet · Aug 27, 05:34 AM · #
  39. I don’t think the greatest cupcakes could ever be chocolate. And especially with that hard looking chocolate frosting in the picture.

No, when I think about a great cupcake, it’s white or yellow cake with a mound of soft buttercream frosting on top. With all sorts of beautiful colors and sprinkles.

I could go for one of those right now.

    <3 Trisha · Aug 27, 06:20 AM · #
  40. 6.50?!! Thank god you’ll be back in the land of 3.00 cupcakes soon!!!

    <3 Nubby · Aug 27, 06:41 AM · #
  41. part of me is blown away by the fantastic packaging and the other part of me thinks that packaging is completely wasteful!

too bad the cupcake wasn’t worth it, by the looks of it, i would have thought it was a homerun!

    <3 holly · Aug 27, 08:18 AM · #
  42. Such a shame, and it looks so good! I’d probably eat it anyway.. with a tall glass of milk…

  43. Cupcakes, like exes
    May look cute and delicious
But are bad for you! >_<

  44. Hello Gala. That cupcake makes me think of dirt with garden worms on top!

I saw this and thought maybe you’d enjoy it. Maybe now it will cheer you up after the cupcake fiasco! :p

  45. At six fifty per
Cup, this is too rich for my
    Minimum wage blood

    <3 Erinn · Aug 27, 02:42 PM · #
  46. Hi Gala,

I enjoyed your haiku review! I am sorry to hear that the cupcake wasn’t worth it…at $6.50, you would expect the cupcakes to have real rainbows bursting out of them or something!

With cupcakes, I think that the simpler they are, the better. Glitter and metallic things on food really freak me out!

Keep up the great writing, I love your blog!

    From Carla

    <3 Carla Darling · Aug 27, 02:58 PM · #
  47. I would happily pay $6.50 for a worthy cupcake. What’s a few extra dollars if you will enjoy it ten times more than a regular one. As long as it doesn’t disappoint!

    <3 candyapple · Aug 27, 04:14 PM · #
  48. I have never been to a cupcake shop. I have no clue if there is one near even near here!
There is an amazing fudge shop at Darling Harbour though..

  49. This fad is a scam.
    Give homemade cupcakes instead
    — put it to the man!

  50. Dear Gala

It’s my last day at work tomorrow so I just bought six boxes of cupcakes (for my colleagues – not just me!) and thought of you.

Hope your next cupcake lives up to expectations :)

    <3 YL · Aug 29, 10:04 AM · #
  51. Hmm, apparently the choc raspberry ones are not the way to go :)
I did treat myself to a vanilla one there yesterday – and had it with a soy latte. Sat and read a book having left work early. Deliciously blissful :) I vouch for the vanilla Tempt cupcakes.

    <3 sok · Aug 29, 09:44 PM · #
  52. i think you paid for the box.
