Things I Love Thursday!

<3 Apricots — Yum! When I was a child, we used to drive from Dunedin to Wanaka in Summer (Dunedin was where my grandparents lived & Wanaka was where they had a holiday house). On the way we would inevitably stop at some of the fruit sellers along the way to buy fresh apricots or big bags of black cherries, the latter of which we would delightfully chomp & spit out the seeds. I don’t know whether we actually sent them sailing out of the windows or whether I am just imagining it, but anyway. So apricots have a good association for me, but there aren’t many around at the moment. Hallelujah! They sell them in cans at the supermarket! Not the most natural form, I admit, but they are still delicious (especially in a smoothie with some maca powder, hazelnuts & chocolate soy ice-cream)!

<3 Atmosphere — I think I said this kind of recently, but I still do! Their ‘Paint It Gold‘ show is hilarious & awesome. I sent them a question yesterday, I really hope they answer it!

<3 Wasabi peas! I had never had ANY wasabi at all until I tried wasabi peas at an engagement party on Saturday. Instant love affair! I hoarded the bowl & ate so many! On our way home, we stopped off at the supermarket & bought two packets. I have been munching on them pretty steadily, though the other day I put four in my mouth at once (absentmindedly I think) & felt like I was having a stroke, so I haven’t had many since then! Haha!

<3 Adventures at the Asian superette! Sometimes (okay, often), at night, I get restless & want to go on an adventure. Usually we would go out for dessert or churros or something sinful, like visit the 24-hour Krispy Kreme (dear god, no!), but since we’re trying to eat as well as possible, instead we went to an Asian superette down the road! We spent ages in there, going “Ooh!” & “Aah!”. We came home with a nice haul of weirdness, too — sesame paste, fried crispy onions, radishes in chilli & some weird chocolates in the shape of tree stumps & burgers. It was awesome.

<3 Ani DiFranco — I am on an Ani kick right now. I go through phases of loving her & then not being able to listen to her for months at a time… but right now I just can’t get enough of her.

<3 Anticipation! So many things to look forward to. Wellington = YAY! We’re going to stay with my parents in their new house, & they’re going to lend us a car so we will be able to do our own thing. (This is another reason why being with Simon is so great — I don’t have a driver’s license, I always used to have to rely on the bus to get around! Haha!) I can’t wait to see all my friends, go shopping & eat all the food I developed an affection for over an 18 year period!

<3 Honourable mentions: By this time next week I will have had my appearance at Dr Sketchy’s, eeeee! Also… Shopping (I have done quite a lot of it recently & have heaps of things to show you!); pomegranates (yes, I tried one & it was AMAZING!); the international friend-scape (it is really cool to know I have great friends in all of my favourite cities!); working out (I am back on it & I have started taking glutamine before I exercise which makes, seriously, a world of difference); crossing things off my ‘to do’ list; Elliott Smith; pyjama snuggling; the new season of The Hills starting soon (seriously, I know I shouldn’t care but all of a sudden, I do?!); 3D glasses & this picture:

How we survive is what makes us who we are.

“There is always something to be happy about. Truly happy. And if you have the audacity to find it and the courage to make it your focus, in spite of the countless temptations to dwell upon problems that don’t really exist, you will have learned well, your life will be transformed, and all things will be added unto you.” — Mike Dooley

Yes, cuties! It’s that time again! Tell me what you LOVE this Thursday! Lay it on thick! Sit there & visualise all the things making your life better, & let it build up so you get little hearts instead of pupils in your eyes & then LET LOOSE! On another note… Can we get 200 submissions? Whaddaya think?!

Super-love & cupcakes,
Gala <3

  4. Oh I know what you’re talking about Gala~! Wasabi peas are the bomb. My friend came over to my house yesterday & she stuffed 6 of them in her mouth. She started going crazy right on the couch!!! Anyways…

    * Sleeping in

    * Drinking bunches of water & eating raw!!! (from your problem skin article. I started trying these things right away cause my skin is a mess right now..)

    * Godiva Chocolate (Shock & horror! Sometimes I catch myself going upstairs once a week & eyeing a chocolate from my precious stash, but luckily I usually catch myself in time.)

    * Spring Break ( that means more time for sleeping, drinking water, & resisting chocolate!)

  6. Ha! Apricots and cherries! The rellies-in-the-South-Island tradition for us North Islanders.

    Happiness:

Musicovery! I am completely loving it and I must thank you for the tip, Miss Gala!

Pennyroyal – it grows wild it my lawn and it just smells fantastic, like perfume.

SYTYCDAU (So You Think You Can Dance Australia) – this show rocks my world! I record it and watch my fave routines over and over and over and over. In NZ we get it 5 days behind, so we get Sunday’s show on Friday, and I always look up on the website to see who gets sent home (this behaviour horrifies everyone I know except me). My fave couples are Kate&Graeme, Henry&Vanessa, Rhys&Jemma. I have a little crush on Rhys – I fantasise about you tracking him down, Gala, and interviewing him for iCiNG!

Easter – leaving at 4am or something tomorrow morning to drive for 5 hours, and spend 5 glorious days in the unspoilt North. Yayyy!

Getting up early and it being cool enough for me to put on my snuggly vintage Surf Club hoodie.

And every Thursday is dancing day :D

  9. TiLT:
    1. Getting into college
    2. The Beatles, Carly Simon, Taylor Swift, and Billy Joel
    3. Anthropologie
    4. Mangos, strawberries that don’t have worms in them, and apple rings
    5. Family and friends (I could put this every week)
    6. Rainy days that give me a chance to use my adorable umbrella
    7. Zoolander
    8. Easter
    9. Time to write in my journal, work out, watch crappy TV, and try on $12,000 dresses at Saks
    10. Life in general

    <3 Anastasia · Mar 20, 10:54 AM · #
  10. - Looking at my ring finger and seeing an engagement ring AND a wedding ring! Despite being married for little over 2 months, this has only just sunk in – I am really, honest to goodness, truly married. Awesome-ness.

    - Drinking lots of water. This is something I’ve really neglected for the past little while, and have made a huge effort this week to keep my water bottle full – my skin is looking and feeling so much better. Plus I get to run to the bathroom constantly at work, which gets me away from staring non-stop at my computer screen.

    - Long travel emails from friends. One of my bestest friends is travelling at the moment all through South America, and reading her emails and blog transport me to the depths of the Amazon. It really changes my outlook on my day when I think of her adventuring and having the best time of her life!

    - Growing my hair long. My hair is just about the longest its been in about 15 years! I am loving it, just having the versatility to tie it up, leave it out, straighten it! Argh, the possibilities are endless. I’m even contemplating a perm, as curly locks has always been my ultimate dream hair, but it’s always been too short to try it!

    - Making the most of the last of the warm weather. We’ve been throwing open every door and window as soon as we get home from work, reveling in the warm breeze! As much as I look forward to winter (boots and stockings, mmmm) these last few weeks of warmth just might be my favourite time of year.

    - Long weekends! No explanation necessary I should hope!

    xoxo

  11. yay my first ever post! things I’m adoring this week:

*almost being done with finals: medical school classes are tough but I’ve made it through 5 of my finals for this term… only one left and then I’m off for break!

*my trip to nyc next week for spring break! I’m planning on visiting the ps1 museum and 5 points (haha I’m such a tourist), checking out patricia field for amazing clothes, eating delicious dim sum in chinatown, ahh so many exciting things to do!

*mardarinquats, my newest supermarket discovery. a cross between a mandarin orange and a kumquat, so you can eat the whole thing (peel included!). amazing!

*my plans to buy a bright orange wig and dread it: I’ve decided that leeloo from the fifth element is my newest fashion icon. any ideas of how to incorporate the future theme into my outfits would be ever-so-appreciated.

*my housemate’s kitty! she sleeps all day curled up on my pillow and makes me feel super snuggly

*my new paper crane mobile! I made it this weekend when I took a break from studying, it was inspiried by one of the pictures from a previous TiLT. it twirls in the wind and is especially pretty.

  12. Things I love:

...High school. I’m starting to really appreciate being a high school student.

...Nifty letters. I like “snail mail.”

...No Country for Old Men. Absolutely incredible movie. I plan to read the book soon.

    ...My incredible friends. They’re amazing.

...College plans. I’m just a sophomore, but I’ve started the college hunt now. I’m so excited! It might be a little early, but hey, it never hurts to plan ahead.

...Redecorating my room. For the past few years, my room has been simply a utilitarian place to sleep, but I’ve decided to make it more “me.” I’ll be in it for two more years, so I might as well spiff it up!

    <3 Amanda · Mar 20, 11:06 AM · #
  13. Ooh! Wasabi peas, yes!
I’ve challenged myself to do “gratitude tasks” this week, so this should be easy:

** My brand new red wig ** Visiting friends ** Airconditioned trains during off-peak hours ** chai tea frappucinos (but I must give them up!) ** watching TV on the internet ** buying a $3.05 bra from Target that fits excellently (go to the city target, guys!) ** a huge bag of fresh cherry tomatoes from a friend with a farm ** Haruki Murakami novels ** housesitting plans with my best friend ** learning Chinese at Uni and being able to say things!

    Wo ai Gala!

  14. I haven’t participated in TiLT in what feels like forever! Thank God I’m doing it now, it’s always such a good feeling.

    * Panic At the Disco’s new record! * making travel plans with “internet friends”! I am so excited to “meet” the people I’ve gotten so close with! * buying my first pair of shorts since before high school! (it’s scary, but I think it’s going to be worth it…) * making new friends!

  23. x The long weekend – BRING. IT. ON.

x The fruit shop near my office with all of its wonderful treats! They make the best low-fat yoghurt, salads, smoothies and fruit goodies – I have recently fallen head over heels with their low-fat rice pudding and mixed nut concoction – absolutely divine.

x My new fragrance diffuser, which I bought for my bedroom – it is Cocoa & Vanilla scented and it is heavenly! My room smells like marshmallows.. I’m in love!

x Plans to buy a gorgeous journal to carry around with me so that I can jot down notes and anything that inspires me :) If I can find one with cupcakes, shoes or anything sparkly on it, even better!

x Seeing the potential – I bought a necklace recently from a second-hand store (read: cheap!) with the most gorgeous pendant on it – pity it was attached to the most horrendous wooden bead-y chain! I knew it truly was a treasure though, so I bought it and just removed it from its chain and instead placed it on a silver chain – it looks stunning and it is my new favourite piece.

  24. I’ve been feeling the TILT love all week!

    - Constant Energy – I had a little op done two months ago and have finally gotten all of my energy back! It feels so amazing to breathe clearly and have no allergies! eeek! I feel like a new girl!

    - Training – I signed myself up for the Mothers Day Classic and have starting my training, slowly but surely! it’s eight weeks away and I can’t wait to see how much I can improve each week! plus raise oodles of money for Breast Cancer Research!

    - Efficiency – I’ve been playing around with a few strategies this week to get myself more organised, focussed and productive. I am totally amazed at how much such little changes affected my motivation levels and energy. Wow! I’ve achieved a lot more than usual, and had more time to do things that I love!

    - My Boy – I fell in love with my boyfriend again! After three and a half crazy years together he still amazes me! J is so silly and cute one minute, and so professional and talented the next! not a bad combo…

    - Easter – Now that the heat wave is over I am so excited about the long weekend! I’m baking Lindt Chocolate Easter cupcakes today for my gorgeous friends and planning an elaborate egg hunt for J!

Also: trashy radio, arguments that bring families closer together, working on my nervous driving, lots of green tea & water, red delicious apples, pretending it’s cold enough for porridge, ordering exciting raw ingredients online for kitchen experimenting…

    xxx

  37. Well, I wasn’t feeling up to writing TiLT (ate too much chocolate) but seeing how you’re trying to get to 200 you motivated me write (I love that).

    * More weddings, my boyfriends brother is getting married in Otari Wilton bush on Sunday and I bought my first dress (since I was 12 or something) to wear to it. It’s so exciting to wear a dress

    * Trying to think of a new pen name, something I can use for all my user names, and for an internet domain. My current one is an abbreviation of a name I ripped off from an Auckland artists character. I’m starting to feel bad about using it.
Although I’m still having trouble pinning one down.

Does anyone know what Germans call cupcakes, like really? Not just a translation or a guess?

    * 4 day weekend

    * Really cheap shoes ($30 for some heeled oxfords from #1 shoe warehouse!)

    * Finally having some good friends. I’ve been in Wellington for 5 years now but never really had anyone to do stuff with apart from my boyfriend (which is great) but now I have a small group of people that I can get together and go out to dinner with. It’s nice (and they were all lonely too after also moving from various places to Wellington).

    * Having my spidey bag key chain thing returned to me after I though I had lost him forever :]

  38. This week, I am loving…

Painted fingernails – I painted my nails for the first time in years and I am loving my hot pink fingernails right now. They look awesome!

The sense of possibility in the air – I am superstitious, so don’t want to dwell too much on this one, but I feel like great things are going to happen for me in the next couple of weeks – everything seems like it’s looking up right now :)

Issues of Vogue India – I paid a fortune for an international subscription to this, and so far it has been totally worth it. Makes me feel at home, and is a totally delicious read.

The New Yorker – One of my awesome friends gave me a subscription to this, and it has lit up my life. A masterclass in how to write well. About anything. So good.

  39. Hey Gala!

Can you please tell me about your glutamine? What do you use (brand?)

It sounds FAB and anything that gives you a little extra energy (or whatever) for exercising has to be good!

    Thank you precious!

  43. I love:
the fact that you don’t have a driver’s license! I don’t either and it’s always nice to find role models who have been successful and happy without driving. It’s hard to find them around here because this is a very vehicle-happy town. Everyone owns gigantic trucks and they try to run me and my bicycle off the road.

spring break I have time to do stuff, finally! I have been relaxing like mad and hanging out with my friends, taking lots of pictures and being happy. I made a dress this morning, too! I could never do that during a normal week!

the dress I made this morning! It’s very simple and black and uneven, but the last time I tried to make a dress was a disaster, so I’m very happy to have made this one. It makes me feel like Audrey Hepburn, if Audrey wore chopped-up t-shirts and burped a lot.

my Sims! Gawd, I love them. They keep me entertained for hours.

moving to a new town soon. whee! So sick of this place, it’s bad for me, and I am finally getting out. Ahhhhhhhhhh.

  44. - My new hair colour. I went to Wildilocks last week after a hair disaster and now it’s aqua and I’m getting so many compliments!

    - Plans for crazy weekend trips to the Gold Coast to surprise a friend

    - Working in the bar at Trades Hall for the comedy festival. I do seasonal type bar work every few months and it’s nice taking a break from my real job and seeing people and having fun and still getting paid!

    - Catching up with old friends. (I used to do stand up comedy and have heaps of friends in town for the festival – friends I only get to see at this time of the year now)

    - Dave’s boutique on Smith St. They’re moving, so books are $1 each! I came home with a very heavy backpack full of second hand books the other day.

  64. its about FRIGGING time i contribute.

Probably my favourite moment of the day was when i was using a wrachet to replace the thermostat on my car. Bebop was kind & did most of the work, and i was clambering around on the ground, grabbing dropped wrenches and the like. My love handles were hanging out of my jeans, i was dirty and i realized that i knew someone that would think i was being incredibly sexy, fixing a car. I was also over-coming my fear of cars & mechanics… It just felt good, to overcome a stressed out moment & have to sit still, watching the world whirl rims & the stench of KCF behind me. Sometimes, those gritty moments remind you that you are alive.

i also had a proud mommy moment when i picked up my puppy from the groomer & the sweet, faux-hawked groomer told me that she was the greatest dog ALL day.

    I also love:
-planning my trip to portland & seattle
-Al Green’s Best Of (especially love & happiness)
-the picnic date i had on top of a missile silo overlooking the entire los angeles area, where i drank sparkling water & gave my date a framed bloodmoth
-The upcoming Battlestar Galactica. Let my starbuck crush resume!
-My fabulous 70s tops with lots of stripes
-I took a hike about 3 minutes from my house & explored a waterfall. There’s also a bridge i couldn’t quite get under, but saw neon orange graffiti faces.
    -Hotel rendezvous. With marshmallows.
-plotting my blog. hearing wonderful things from you!

in germany we use the name cupcake as well, but its not very well known here. thats the reason why we dont have a special german name for it. it IS ein kleiner runder kuchen mit sahne oder frischkäse or ein sahnetörtchen, but nobody would say that to a cupcake.

    www.cupcakeberlin.de/
we have muffins here too, but becos they come from america we use the name muffin as well. but of corse he have a lot of other fine cakes and cookies, like apfelkuchen or apfelstrudel (applecake), käsetorte (cheesecake)and sahnetorte (creamcake) and many many more

  81. Kayla – Under The Radar is AMAZING!! __

♥♥♥♥ This week I finally went and hunted down the (http://www.riverfrontmarketwilm.com) Riverfront Market in Wilmington. There were fewer vendors than I expected, but the bulk of the floor space is taken up by an AMAZING local produce seller. I ended up carting home:
3 granny smith apples, 3 amber sweet oranges, a big tub of cantalopue chunks, 3 bananas, 2 massive zucchini, a yellow pepper 1.5 times the size of my fist, 2 shallots, 4 local white mushrooms that are larger and thicker than the palm of my hand, about 2 lbs of green seedless grapes, and about a pound of mixed salad greens. All for $19.21. Outstanding.

♥♥♥♥ ‘We ♥ Katamari’ for PS2. __ I’ve been house/dogsitting for my aunt and uncle this week, and I stumbled across this in my little cousins collection. If you haven’t played any of the Katamari games, they are feel good awesomeness! Instead of the standard blood guts and gore games, this is brightly colored, crazy-scored Japanese hillarity, involving rolling around a ball in different locations, collecting larger and larger things, until your ball can roll up people, then cars, then trees, buildings, islands, countries, on and on! +1000 points for cheering-up-factor.

♥♥♥♥ The season premiere of The Riches on FX. I kept catching random episodes last season, and I was super stoked to start watching it for real this time. Eddie Izzard. Minnie Driver. Con artists. Suspense. Hillarity. What more could you want? I mean, I need SOMETHING else to watch when I’ve seen every Law & Order episode available. >_>

♥♥♥♥ ‘Day Watch’ by Sergey Lukyanenko. Second book in the Night Watch trilogy. Set in Moscow, the story revolves around a confrontation between two opposing supernatural groups (known as “Others”): the Night Watch, an organization dedicated to policing the actions of the Dark Others — and the Day Watch, which polices the actions of the Light Others, keeping each other in check. The first book was excellent, and the second is proving just as good. Totally giving me my bizarre sci-fi fix, but with a really unexpectedly catchy plot. Check it out (but read ‘Night Watch’ first!)

♥♥♥♥ Saint Pats!!! I am one Irish-decendent lady, and I went out with the family for dinner. I countered the wailings about my not wearing any green by scarfing down a spinach wrap stuffed with lettuce, sprouts, cucumber, roasted red peppers (okay, those were red), and guacamole, and delighted our sweet tattooed waiter by drinking Midori and Grey Goose (electric green!!), since I don’t do beer. Lots of fun was had by all. My grandparents are pretty much the most amazing people ever and always make me laugh.

    Honorable mentions:
-Keeping up on drinking more water and eating more fruits and veggies!
-30 day countdown to my birthday has officially begun!!
-Making vegan cupcakes with UHHMAHZING buttercream-esque frosting. Okay, okay, not so healthy, but worth the splurge!!
-Playing with the most adorable doggies in the world for the last week while sprawling around my aunt and uncle’s GORGEOUS house on my own.
-Determination to learn to properly fold an origami crane, and then cover my room in them. Thanks a lot, Katamari. hahaha

    * Jason Castro’s version of Michelle, haha. I just watched the video about 10 times in a row. I love this song, and I love him, so it all works out nicely for me.

  88. .Red Dwarf- I am on such a kick right now. It’s on the Netflix instant browser, and it’s hilarious! I love britcoms!

.My new dress mannequin- for some reason, seeing that lady standing in my room all day gives me such inspiration to sew!

    .Flowers- Instant room-brightening!

.Frida Kahlo- Beautiful artwork by a beautiful lady.

.The Felice Brothers- Folk/Rock/Rockabilly. A band with an accordion player, whats not to love.

.Signs of Spring- Warm evenings, rain instead of snow, buds on the branches, birdies…

.Clean, soft sheets- Being a Yank, I’ve just climbed in between them. lovely.

  90. Well, here in oklahoma, usa it’s not going to be thursday for another 20 minutes.

    TILT
Juggling- my teacher let me borrow his juggling clubs for spring break

Parks (big and small)- I had so much fun playing at the park today with some cousins and a nephew, despite the fact that I was in an incredible grumpy mood.

Blogs- I routinely check my top 5 (give or take a few) everyday (including galadarling.com)

  91. - Having a full week off work and uni, in which I can relax, clean my house and get all my notes typed up neatly (basically just a full rewind and catch up on my life)

    - My new MacBook. After going about five months without a laptop (my flatmate’s cat peed on it, sigh) it’s amazing to be able to do so much again (like read my emails in bed! Hooray!).

    - That Wellington is still lovely and sunny. Today is a perfectly balmy summer day.

    - Looking forward to a night out with my best friends. I was engaged in December, but my girly engagement party has been put off until now since nobody ever had time off at the same time. It’s going to be a lot of fun, especially since I have a new little black dress to wear.

    - Planning my new tattoo. It’s going to be the Great A’Tuin from the Discworld series, because I am a major geek and proud of it.

    - Creating things. In the past few weeks, university and work have been kicking my ass and I haven’t had nearly enough time to sew. Now I have a week to work on it as much as I want to!

  93. Today:

Feeling like things are all coming together in every aspect of my life. It’s odd, and lovely.

Having a watercolour lecturer who gets excited and uses phrases like “bliss on a stick”

Getting the hell off hormonal birth control. I cannot express how happy this makes me.

Painting. I have a love-hate relationship with it. But it’s so unctuous and fluid and … I sound like Nigella Lawson. But you get the picture (hehe, a pun!). It’s also really zen sometimes.

Beautiful metallic spectator heels at something like 90% off Ebay, how I love thee, let me count the ways.

Growing my own strawberries on my postage stamp of a balcony

... This list could go on forever. It might be the lack of hormonal birth control talking, but everything seems bright and shiny right now.

    Ooh! And!
Drinking Belgian apple beer out of teacups with a gorgeous friend while flying your new kite in a park Always a win.

  94. - The movie Enchanted with Amy Adams + Patrick Dempsey. I’ve always been a sucker for a cute love story + this is all of that plus singing + dancing!

    - Spring break! It’s great to have some time off, even if I know I should be working on some homework!

    - Looking at colleges – it’s thrilling + scary at the same time, but each university presents so much opportunity.

    - video.stumbleupon.com/#p=ithct… This man really knows what life is all about + is such an inspiration. I would watch this every morning if I could.

    - Great design blogs! They’ve really helped me figure out what I want to do in life.
