Things I Love Thursday
[ 15 May 2008 ]
Southern hospitality — This time last week I was on my way to Florida. I had such a great time there, & Meg & Charles made me feel so welcome! (Thank you!) It was all about Spanish moss, amazing weather, birthday parties, bubble machines, s’mores & a nice slow pace. I don’t know that I could live in Gainesville, but we went out to a tiny little town called Interlachen where we spent some time at this beautiful house which made me think that I could happily spend a lot of time in a spot like that.
Disneyworld, Orlando & Mike Dooley. To me, the three are now inextricably linked, haha! I had such an amazing time there! I was only there for a day; I caught the Greyhound there on Sunday morning & back the next day. Mike & I went to Disneyworld, out for dinner in a beautiful setting (dining alfresco by a lake, warm tropical breezes & all), then spent time lounging by his pool talking. He has a great lifestyle, I didn’t want to leave! It was so much fun to spend time with him one on one (& fall kind of in love with his dog). Mike is great, I totally adore him, & wish I could have spent more time in his company. Disneyworld was great too, of course! We went on the Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean & the teacups…
Good plane seats — I have had incredible luck with seating this entire time I’ve been travelling. Lots of leg room, entire rows to myself, super-pleasant seat-mates, & more!
Butterfly Rainforest — In Gainesville, we went to the Museum of Natural History which contains one of the most fantastic things I’ve ever seen: a butterfly rainforest. Picture yourself walking through a beautiful, lush, green valley, as butterflies of all colours & sizes flutter past, occasionally landing on you & then flying on. It was incredible. Really, really incredible. The lime green one below fell in love with me, I think — it hung around for ages! Having a butterfly land in your hair is quite something, you can feel these tiny vibrations as it beats its wing close to your ear, & you get this feeling that you should stay very, very still so as not to disrupt the moment. Yeah. It was fabulous. If you ever get the chance to go, do it!

Flying into NYC — I flew into NYC’s LaGuardia airport last night, which I’ve never done (I have always been a JFK gal!). We flew right over the city, which was awe-inspiring & gorgeous. I stared out the window the whole time, getting my bearings & marvelling.
New purchases! I haven’t been going shopping crazy, but I have definitely picked up some fabulous new things. Hit picks: vintage Chanel scarf (free!), silver mesh high heels ($21!), black DKNY dress ($39), Disney hats (no idea) & my latest new toy… a Helio Ocean. Be still my beating heart! So sexy, so sleek! I am in rapture, truly. It is a marvellous thing. Meg & Charles (my hosts in Gainesville) both had them & every time they whipped them out to do crazy tinkering, my blood bubbled with lust! Now I’m back in NYC, & I have one of my own… Nyah nyah! Hee! I’m so happy, I have wanted one for such a long time!
Simon — He is great 24/7. I wish he could come back to New York! Eep!
Honourable mentions: Breakfast meetings at the St Regis (I met with Louis Vuitton this morning!); grey v-neck t-shirts (my new craze); ridiculously high platforms with straps all over; technology (man, it’s good — all the videos in this post reminded me how great it is!); the Sex & The City movie’s approaching release (maybe we should have an NYC nonpareil meet-up & all go & see it together?!); the way New York streets smell (amazing food scents 24/7); New York City’s incredible convenience (it might be all of the States, but Victoria’s Secret doesn’t close until about 9pm on a Wednesday! Wow!) & looking forward to settling into a sanctuary & writing furiously for hours on end!
“A single thankful thought towards heaven is the most perfect of all prayers.” — Gotthold Ephraim Lessing
Okay, my sweet! How about you? I know this is going up a little late, so hopefully you have had extra time to think about what would make your weekly list of glee!
Super-love & cupcakes,
Gala ![]()

Gala's Secret Surprise!

Wow, New York sounds so AMAZING! I can’t wait to go one day soon! Here’s what’s making my Friday:
x Starting my new blog, www.misscorrine.typepad.com! I have wanted to start something of my own for what feels like forever, and now that I have, it feels amazing! I am having so much fun.
x I am also heavily anticipating the release of the ‘Sex and the City’ movie, I cannot WAIT! (Sarah Jessica Park’s outfit at the London Premiere just made me even more excited – that dress, that colour, that headpiece – it was divine!)
x Shopping, shopping, shopping! I have purchased a new pair of boots to do some stomping in, and they are perfect!
x It’s Friday, and it’s getting closer and closer to the weekend!
xoxo
Ahhhh, you make me blush hon! Thanks so much for visiting. I’m so glad to hear that you had a great time. Charles and I really enjoyed your stay and hope you’ll come back to visit.
The bubble machine was great — but that was totally your doing. If that’s not in your how to throw a party e-book, then it should be.
I hope you enjoy the scarf. I’m glad it found a good home. Send me plenty of pictures.
Speaking of which: tinyurl.com/6csc59
I’ll add more photos later since I got one today from my mom of the four of us, but i have to scan it first.
Keep in touch. Now that you have that awesome Helio Ocean, you have no excuse ;)
Aaaah I really want to come to New York and see the Sex and The City movie with you gala!!
Things I Love Friday!
Dance Dance Revolution I got the new game delivered today! I havent played it yet but my feet are itching to dance! What a fun way to get fit :)
My New Phone I have lived without a mobile for 6 months! Yes! And I was getting so many messages on the home phone. I finally gave in and got a new Nokia! Yey!
The Three F’s My life used to be all about my boyfriend. Now my life is about friends and family and getting fit! The three F’s! Haha.
Interviews I have been to so many in the last week. I had one yesterday for a job I really really want! I am hoping so bad I get it. Fingers crossed for me everyone! Anyway I am so used to interviews now I actually like them.
Thats all for this week. xx
what do i love today?
sweatin’ to the oldies i picked up the 20th anniversary sweatin’ to the oldies dvd as an impulse purchase over the weekend. HILARIOUS. richard simmons circa 1988! very low impact aerobics, but it got me moving, and yes, i did sweat!
coconut milk deliciousness in a can!
my awesome friends no explanation needed.
ah, to be thankful for the good things in life…
Louis Vuitton?!
I can’t even begin to imagine the fabulous going-ons of this meeting!!
Things I Love Thursday
Gay Marriage Legalized Today in California!!! I am so thrilled! I am going to go to San Fransisco this weekend to celebrate peace and equality! Coincidence this happened on a Thursday?? Perhaps not…
Warm Weather I was not prepared for it to be so hot this week (100’F+ in the Bay Area!) but it’s making me giddy! I just want to go dancing all night!
Hippies I love them.
Carrots mmmmmmmmm
x Miss C x — Yay for starting a new blog! It’s always so exciting! & yay shopping! Always fun!
Meg — I was really touched by your generosity & had a very good time :> Thank you so much!
Chloe — Aww, I wish you could too cutie! Maybe you could make a cardboard cut-out of me, & put one of my podcasts on a tape, & take it to the movies with you… It’d be pretty much like having me there! xxx
nerdyspice — Yum, I love coconut milk too. So good in smoothies!
maggie — WOOHOOOOOOOO! Gay marriage, HELL YES! I’m so, so, sooooooo happy about that!
You flew into LGA right as I was leaving!
That being said, the first thing on my list is obviously:
& New York City
I love this place. I haven’t been in 4 years, and I went into the city 3 times this week, and I forgot how amazing it is. I’m going back in August, probably.
& Buying presents. I bought the most insane things for my friends (a pair of panties and a keychain that said #1 grandma for one friend, instant snow from the Natural History Museum shop and a Zac Efron keychain for the other).
& Tara, who is my bff that I stayed with. We stayed up one night eating cake and drawing pictures and listening to Tommy on vinyl and I miss it. We’ve known each other for like 6 years, and had not met until a week ago (almost exactly, ugh).
& Not having to work again until Sunday! If I can’t be at Tara’s house, I can at least… not be at work.
& My Chemical Romance, who I saw last Thursday, and who put on the most amazing show I will ever see.
& Rent, which is actually how Tara and I met. We saw it on Monday, and during intermission realized that we had to come back on Tuesday.
(I have a one track mind right now, obvs.)
For a second I thought you weren’t going to post Things I Love Thursday il m’a rendu triste de penser. So happy you did! Yes Yes Yes! We MUST all go see the movie together. It would be très fabuleux!
Things I love this week… Difficult, because I’m rather bored sitting around at home now that school’s out.
Naomi! One of my favorite people from school called me today- she was on her way to Florida from New Jersey, and her family was taking the auto train, which picks up about half an hour from my house. So I drove down, picked her up, and we went out for coffee and made plans for me to visit her on the Jersey Shore later in the summer. Made my day!
Books I haven’t had time to read for pleasure in ages, and I have a huge stack of books on my desk right now. It’s wonderful to have time to read.
Veggie Food I didn’t realize how much I’ve grown to love vegetarian food until I got home and was thrown back into a much more meat-based diet than I ate at school. But I bought veggie burgers! And hummus! And more fruits and veggies!
There is only one this week, but mainly because it is amazing.
I AM TOTALLY AND FOREVER DONE WITH HIGH SCHOOL.
That is all.
That one of my final projects is done.
YOU WERE IN GAINESVILLE??!
I am sitting in Gainesville right now, wishing I’d known so I could’ve caught a glimpse of you!
Your days sound amazing!
wahhhhhhhhhhhh i want that phone so bad, but i dont think they work in nz :(
I know Palatka! I used to live in nearby St. Augustine!
Oh and yes, Victoria’s Secret stays open like that everywhere here as far as I know.
Some of my latest fave things:
Playing drums on Rock Band. Fun!
My new TN state license I got today! (I recently moved to Nashville.)
Vodka & tonic in my pink glasses with gemstone ice cubes.
Mayo with Sriracha chili sauce and MSG! Tsk tsk but so yummy in homemade sushi and on whatever else I feel like dipping in it (including steamed potato sticks yesterday!).
- Death Cab for Cutie’s new album Narrow Stairs – it’s fricking amazing. LOVELOVELOVE.
- Baking cupcakes for my flatmates, and them getting really excited and taking photos of the finished product :)
- Experimenting a bit more with my wardrobe – I’ve always been pretty conservative, but have lately begun to branch out a bit.
- The weekend’s coming…
I’m hoping I love a bunch of things I just bought in the ginormeous YOOX sale.
I’m panting for my trip to NY on the 27th (I hope you do the propsed SATC movie meet up. I’d be totally there).
In preparation for the trip I getting my hair done and a salon pedicure… the better to try on shoes with, of course.
I hope by the 29th I’ll have a whole list of NY related TILT items to swoon about.
Much Luv
Poochie
The Melbourne Zoo has an amazing butterfly house. You should go there once you get home again!
Oh Gala, those butterfly pictures are beautiful! I’m glad you’re having such an amazing time.

this thursday.. I went to see the Cure in concert! ...actually I just got home, and am still buzzing! I’m completely blown away. Robert Smith is as amazing today as he was 30 years ago! how does that man do it?
ps, I went to a butterfly place like that once.. but I have a phobia of things that fly, it was not a good place for me, I would freak if I felt anything flutter by me!
One day i dream that I will be going to New York like you and shopping up a storm ;)
Is it a bad thing to love the same things every week? Coz i’m (still) loving:
-the UK elle magazine: awesome articles, great fashion, lots of content and nowhere near the amount of advertising as the US edition
-gossip girl. this weeks episode was great. it was fun to see chuck, nate, blair and serena all together. though the whole mystery thing was a bit of a letdown
-doing well on Jenny Craig. i’ve lost 3.3kg in 2 wks and never been hungry. i’m lighter than i’ve been in a year.
-that its officially the weekend (its friday night in NZ) and I have 4 days off.
-awaiting the (NZ) premiere of Sex and the City!
-my family, my boyfriend, my workmates
I haven’t done this in a while (I always do it in my notebook but not commenting here, silly me) but I love it love it best thing about the week.
I love…
Jiffies yes the tiny little comfy ballet shoes from kindergarten.. They come in grown up sizes yay! At only $17 each I had to get every colour.. Pink, silver, gold, black, and white! So cute and comfy!
Gala’s NYC adventures I want more more more I want you to publish your New York diaries! & what is the Helio Ocean? I remember once I mentioned to you I have a Hiptop3 (aka Sidekick3 aka what I’m typing on right now) and you said Telstra makes you “mildly psychotic” hehe. What network is the Helio Ocean on??
Getting into makeup I’ve always stuck to Clinique and I am big on the natural look.. My routine is just concealer and mascara and maybe blush. But now I’m getting into the sparkly stuff from Napoleon and NARS... So glam but so expensive and addictive!
xoxo

_the fact that Gala and I are like breathing the same air!@
Well, so far this week hasn’t been a great one…and it’s been about spending a lot of money on un-fun stuff sob but I do still have things I love!
mX: Come on, a free newspaper with Sudoku, a crossword, word jumbles, horoscopes, news and gossip, what more can you ask for?!

chocolate chip cookies – they may not be particularly good for me but oh boy are they yummy!
My Favorite things-
-Larabars… delicious and so good to eat slow. also raw/gluten free, etc. I want to learn how to make fruit bars out of stuff at home.

-Spring color, new leaves and seeing the geese fly in.
-Keeping in touch with faraway friends.
Aw I’m glad you liked Florida :) There are quite a few butterfly gardens here, they’re so sweet.
I honestly cannot believe you went to Palatka, that is so funny. Of all the places, Gala. One of my friends is from there and we make fun of it all the time.
& I’ve wanted a Helio Ocean since it came out! I can’t wait to switch my plan and get one (or the next incarnation of it) next year.
bikini kill – especially ‘in accordance to natural law’. what an amazing 28 seconds.
new glasses – they’re brown and kind of retro and i really like them :).
sestinas – what a fun type of poetry to write! really hard, too, obviously, but it quickly goes crazy and the poem takes over. fun to read, too.
tigermilk – best belle & sebastian album as far as i’m concerned. i love listening to it on the bus in my horrible CD player and nerdy headphones. it doesn’t make me feel strong.
Liquidambars turning all the colours of the autumn spectrum.
The movie “Enchanted”; sticky-sweet fun!
Teenage ballet: my new class full of fabulous gorgeous enthused young women.
Santana’s “Smooth” – irresistible!
Men in wedding rings – hot!!
Things i love well its friday here now :)
Elliott Smith I fell for his songs again and its good. His voice sometimes does makes me sad but also understood. Now i want to have more of his records, good thing its almost time for a trip to Berlin.
Curves I’m getting a hang of it. Its a great concept, only sport for 30 min. 3 times a week. Yesterday when it was raining we still went and i felt grand.
Changes I try to make excuses that i’m not ready to adjust or ready for a change but i am. I just have to be not so freaking scared and just take a leap.
My scarf Pink, yellow and orange coloured. Its really big and i bought it in Bali and it makes me smile because of the bright colours. It reminds me of the sunrise.

Did you get to ride “It’s a Small World”? When we rode that a boy asked if there were any big hills on the ride.. he really didn’t know what he was in for, haha. I really, really want to go back!

Well, speaking of onion bhaji… I didn’t actually have that, but I did have some AMAZING curry with my mom from this little curry place we pass on our way home from work. We took it to a little park, and also had some naan bread and gulab jamun. It was so nice to just chill out with her :)
And I had a great day at work, plus although working lots can be tiring, I am making lotsa moola, which is good. Because I am going to school this fall, AND I need a new computer… I am buying a MacBook soon. (Which is another thing I love. I am majorly exicted!)
