Things I Love Thursday!
Super-size it!

1. Peony Pink, 2. grad-6, 3. Seducimos valiendonos de mentiras y pretendemos ser amados por nosotros mismos., 4. Untitled

Here is my list of things I luuuurve this week!

<3 Meeting new people — In the last week, I have met (among others): Andrea, managing editor of The Fashion Spot; Wendy Brandes, jewellery designer extraordinaire & her husband, former managing editor of The Wall Street Journal; Craig of street style blog Altamira NYC; Jenny & Soren of Copenhagen Street Style; Gilda of Bunka, Parsons & holiday in the sun fame; Colin of No Impact Man; the girls from Bag Snob; Chris from Stylehive; Wendy from Nitrolicious; Aaron from Haute Concept; Lesley from FashionTribes, a whole lot of lovely people from Louis Vuitton, & uh, probably some other people too! Phew! Not bad for a week, hmm?! Even better, it shows no sign of slowing down… I am loving it!

<3 My new place! I probably don’t need to explain this, so let me just say: my new apartment is bliss. I am so happy to be here that I could pass out with glee. Each morning I wake up with this little feeling of delight that begins somewhere in my eyebrow & slowly spreads down & across until it bathes my entire body, & I lie there feeling fabulous, blessed, excited, energised & ready to kick booty! Dear Universe: thank you, thank you, thank you.

<3 Bicycle delivery guys — At about 5pm, you have to start being a little more careful when you cross the streets of Manhattan, because the city slowly becomes awash with dudes on bicycles couriering food from restaurants to apartments. I love it! It’s so quaint & cool & they are all so fearless — racing with taxis, risking life & limb, all in the sweet & simple quest to deliver your pizza hot. Amazing.

<3 Ricky’s NYC — If you’ve never been into a Ricky’s store, let me explain. Every city needs at least one. It is basically your one-stop beauty shop. It’s better than Sephora, because they stock pretty much every beauty accessory known to man. There is a wall of false eyelashes, all in different colours, shapes & materials. There are candles, delicious-smelling soaps, straightening irons, all the best types of shampoo, & my favourite thing? The entire range of Special Effects hair dye. (They also have Manic Panic but it is an inferior product & you should not waste your money.) I think I have been into at least one of their stores every day since I got back last Thursday. I cannot walk past without going in. It makes me very, very happy.

<3 Eating raw — Tonight I was feeling a bit petulant, & wanted a salad but couldn’t be bothered going & buying all the individual ingredients. I know, what hardship, right? So I got off the bed & walked to Pure Food & Wine, which is a mere stroll from my apartment. Yay! I had a delicious dinner, & made jottings in my Moleskine as I ate, & thought, & sipped at a glass of amazing lemonade. (Amazing, I tell you.) When I was done, I went next door to their takeaway area & picked up a pint of almond butter cup ice-cream, which is devastatingly good (& I swear tastes about a billion times better than conventional ice-cream), & a slice of cake (gasp!) for tomorrow. Breakfast, probably. Yum yum!

<3 Avril Lavigne — I’m sure I’ve mentioned this in a Things I Love Thursday before, but it’s still true, so it’s worth repeating! When I worked at Lush, her album, Under My Skin, was one of the only decent CDs in the shop (& believe me, before I started working there, I didn’t like her at all). The Grease soundtrack was the other great one, but we also lots of stuff that drove me crazy, like Maroon 5 (argh!). Anyway… I was going through an ugly break-up & infatuation with someone totally unsuitable at the time, & this is going to sound so lame, but singing along to Avril Lavigne when the shop was empty was truly one of the best things ever. (I do have other female vocalist loves though — & taste, I swear! — notably Fiona Apple, Amy Winehouse & Ani Difranco.) Oh, & I read an interesting thing about Avril Lavigne a while ago where she attributed her constant angst to eating too much sugar! She said she went to a nutritionist & sorted herself out & she’s much happier now. Neat, huh?

<3 New Zealand music — I didn’t like it much when I was in New Zealand, but as soon as I left, everything changed! This is one of my very favourite NZ songs. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Che Fu – Scene 3

<3 Honourable mentions: The fact that contact lenses are half the price here!; being asked for directions twice in one day & being able to help both times!; the Barney’s sale (uh oh, look out…); the charm that is inherent in practically every New Yorker I’ve met so far; Lupe Fiasco (I listened to The Cool on the bus back to Gainesville & was really, really impressed); fashion illustration (sometimes I wish I lived in the pictures); a big stack of stationery from the New York Palace; my friend Bei Badgirl’s art (one day I will have her paint a wall in my house); falling in love with skirts (1 with detail, & 2); sitting in my window watching the world go by (it is so exciting & happy-making that I feel like my heart might burst!), & emailing back & forth with Simon while I was at dinner (it was like a very slow date, but I loved it).

“I am thankful for laughter, except when milk comes out of my nose.” — Woody Allen

Don’t be shy! It’s time to join in! (Especially if you are in the antipodes — it is 2am, & I stayed up finishing this so that you would get this on Thursday & wouldn’t feel left out! So you owe me… haha!)

Super-love & cupcakes,
Gala <3

  2. Last time I mentioned my sister and her boyfriend. Now they top my list again, but in a different way.

Thinking about my sister’s wedding- Yeah, they’re getting married. It’s so exciting!

Personal trainers- Our gym memberships came with 2 1/2 hours of coaching, and I just finished mine up. My arms and abs are so sore, but it’s worth it.

YouTube music- You get to hear so much new stuff and you don’t have to pay a dime!

My lovely reviewers- I’m a writer, and I recently got a review from someone who found my story and spent two hours reading. It makes me smile. _

x The ABUNDANCE of magazines out this week! I am obsessed. This week I have been poring over the new issues of Cleo, Madison & In Style, and loving them.

x Trying on different outfits and playing around with my existing wardrobe to find different looks.. all in the name of taking ‘Daily Outfit’ photos, and trying to make them better & better!

x Taking time to go for little walks everyday.

  7. This Thursday, I love…

Being out of debt: I had to pay a massive $3.5k for movers to come and pack up the house and move it all to storage, and today was the final installment paid off. (I mean, the guy wanted me to pay cash, but WHO CARRIES THAT MUCH IN CASH?!)

Tenants: My family home is being rented out, so the tenants are moving in within the next few days which means the house will be lived-in again, and there’s more money in the bank.

Cupcake-motif items: I’ve gone mad, I swear. I fond a set of a tote, makeup bag and coin purse in matching pink fabric (under clear plastic so it’s washable) with cupcakes on it! And then I bought myself cupcake earrings and charm bracelet from ShanaLogic.

My bed: I love my bed so much. I haven’t slept on it in like three years, and now I have it back I never want to leave it. It’s so warm and snuggly!

Counsellors who make you feel like you aren’t going crazy: I took the big step today, I went to see a counsellor about my grief issues, and it helped. She also told me that, because of my circumstances, I could get special consideration on my assignments due next week, and she told me to not be too hard on myself because I’ve been trying so hard to keep it all together that I’m falling apart from not taking care of myself.

Weekends away: Even though I have LOTS of work due next week, I am still going away to the mountains with a group of friends to take long walks, photograph everything in sight, laugh, joke about, and generally have a good time. As an added bonus, where we are is only about 10 minutes by train or 20 minutes by bus from my favourite vintage store EVER (I have been dreaming about going back ever since I bought my powder blue 1950s dress and matching petticoat from there).

  8. My boyfriend.

I shaved my head last week and he teased me using a phrase that my ex had used seriously when we were still going out and I lost my mind a little. (My ex treated me pretty badly and could be really nasty)
I freaked out and later sent my boyfriend an email explaining why (because I couldn’t quite tell him all this past stuff face-to-face) and told him that the reason I freaked out so much was because I was falling in love with him and didn’t want to lose him.
The next morning I awoke to find an email from my boy in my inbox and I was so scared to open it that I thought I was going to physically be sick.I just couldn’t deal with the thought that he’d freak out over what i’d said.
Luckily the email said that he’d been meaning to say the same thing for a while. We met up for dinner that night and now everything is amazing. I’m deliriously happy. :)

  9. pocketbooks (the band) – i kept reading about them but yesterday i finally decided to check them out. they’re AWESOME and fun and cute.

waffles – i’d never had a waffle before, but i just had one with chocolate sauce for breakfast – mmm, so nice! it’d probably be even nicer if i hadn’t burnt it, but, mmm.

the end of school – i say this every week as it draws nearer, but today is actually my last full day of school. isn’t that terrifying? i think it’s terrifying but also awesome.

street art – i’m going to london on saturday and i’m going to see this awesome street art exhibition at the tate mdoern – woo!!

cassettes – i ordered a cassette album from a band that i love last night, as it was released on a tape-only album. awesome.

  17. This Thursday I like [not love, I’m in a bit of a rut this week]:

    + Soko – I’ll Kill Her. Hilarious.
+ Birds of Tokyo – Silhouettic. Good song.
    + Big headphones
+ Honey and Lemon Strepsils [I have the flu :( ]
+ Vegetarianism! It’s going pretty well so far.

However, this week I do NOT like:

+ Splendor in the Grass. I missed out. I was clicking that damn refresh button for hours, then they sold out.
+ The flu, which I have.
+ Assignments – I have 4 due in the next 4 days. Frig.
+ Vegetarianism. Yeah, okay I know. I like bacon. I miss bacon.

I’ll be more positive next Thursday, that’s when my holidays start!

  18. Exam goodness – My first two college exams ever went extremely well. Three more to come, let’s hope I’m just as happy with them! There’s also fantasticity surrounding being examined on something I love.

Tea evenings – There is nothing more fun than piling onto a couch with an industrial sized pot of tea and spending hours in conversation. The most fun one recently was when my little sister joined in and charmed the pants (not literally!) off my friends.

Potential moving out next year – I’m looking forward to having more independence.

My bicycle – Physically, it’s had its day (the saddle slides downwards as I ride so I come home with the handlebars above my head) but it is such a utile thing to have. I also adore taking it on suburban exploration missions.

  20. Yeah, I visited New York a few months ago (it was my first time) and I was so blown away by how lovely everybody was, not at all like the movies! No one was pushy or rude or anything. New Yorkers are awesome! And the people working in shops generally seemed super perky and helpful, and everyone was so complementary (some random guy in starbucks came up and said how much he liked my dress) Loved it. Wished I was living in New York , Your so lucky!

  24. Dancing in a chorus line (to ‘New York, New York’, of course!) – the proximity, trust and unison with the other dancers is such a rush! I think this is what being in a band must be like.

The movie ‘Atonement’ – fantastic. Lord, I cried! But I was so transfixed I couldn’t even get off the couch to grab a tissue. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

My sister – since our olds have left for the South Island, I have to get all the goss direct from the source, so I ring her several times a week. It’s nice.

This quote: Sin writes histories, goodness is silent. (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)

Using my summer Xmas tree for winter kindling – haven’t done this for AGES, as it’s been so long since I’ve had both a fireplace and a real pinetree for Xmas.

Singing along to tragic songs in public: Hear’say at the supermarket, Backstreet Boys walking down the road. Yep.

My Gala tote! So choice! So roomy!

My Gala tank! Looks so good in those gym mirrors, showcasing muscles I didn’t even know I had!

Practical men (with graphite powder and angle grinders) who fix things for me – I’ve been rescued twice this week . . .

    Potted herbs: on my windowsill.

    Actually working, sewing, completing projects

Seing my best friend again, who’s just back from Finland (she was on Erasmus for eigth months, and I didn’t know how much I missed her until I saw her again)

Being able to turn annoying things into fun/useful ones Locked out for two hours? I spent time at the café, reading the paper and writing ideas for my novel in my Moleskine. It allowed me time to think and I needed it! Turning up at a party to learn it was cancelled? Then taking the metro in the wrong direction? We just hopped off and went to have a drink at a shabby little bar where a juke-box played Gainsbourg and The Stray Cats, had great conversation and great fun.

  40. You met Gilda!! Ohh I was hoping to meet her this summer, but it’ll have to wait until I solve the issues I have with US Tourist Visas.

    Anyways, my list:

+ That Anna and I found out that we are not the only Mexicans who read your blog, although I would like to know more nonpareils here in Mexico.
+ Finals week, which in itself is stressful and full of sleepless nights but it also means that the semester is over and that summer is here for me.
+ Dr. Pepper and cereal, my study food. I know it’s not healthy at all but it gives me a rush of sugar to the brain which helps me concetrate better when I study.
+ Bedtime YOGA with Tara stiles because I fall asleep like a log when I finish doing it.
+ The Bass Guitar, for our Electricity project, we made a Bass Guitar and it’s finished! It works really well and we got an A on it. Everyone interested in looking at it pictures are here: s142.photobucket.com/albums/r8…
+ Car rides with Diego, he was late to meet his friends so still he gave me a ride home. I told him to drop me off at the local supermarket and he was like “Are you sure? Who is going to pick you up? Call home now and tell them to pick you up! Are you sure? Really Julie, I CAN take you home.” He’s such a sweetheart.
+ Gerry one of my newest friends, he’s adorable! He says that he’s going to write a song called Julie and the lyrics are going to be “Juliejuliejuliejulie” He makes me crack up.

Yeah, that’s it for now. I have to get back to studying.

    Kisses.

  41. finding happiness in unexpected places i went into a store to pick up a few things yesterday, and when i stepped outside, a parade was setting up with marching bands and police officers in kilts playing bagpipes. it was beautiful, and nearly moved me to tears of joy!

bouncing back i’ve had a rough couple of weeks, and i’ve made the decision to change myself for the better, to fix myself and my life. i am hopeful and happy, and i feel accomplished, like i can really do it.

  44. Claire — Yeah, that’s what I thought! At first I thought maybe it some kind of scam (paranoid!) but it wasn’t :>

Claudia — I actually haven’t heard much Shapeshifter! How weird is that? I am a Salmonella Dub girl!

Nadine — So happy to hear you’re rocking your Gala-wear! I use my tote on planes to carry all my nonsense (laptop & cameras etc.). It’s perfect!

brodie — You can buy them at the American candy shop in Melbourne Central & at USA Foods (or whatever it’s called), which is in the ‘burbs. Oh, there is one on Lygon Street too… Enjoy!

bei — Hahahah. I lub you too! & probably by next year I’ll be living here, so you can come stay with me!

Juls — Ja! Gilda is so cute, she is charming++ !

april — Hmm. I guess it’s just making an effort to connect with people whose work I admire; there’s no point in liking it silently (I think!). So I reach out & then a lot of these people approached me when they knew I would be in town. They have all been totally AWESOME so far!

  45. Matching toe nails and fingernails in the past two weeks they’ve been navy, grey, and now red…! :) Since I’ve been on study leave it’s been the best thing to be able to wear nail polish all the time. Also, co-ordinating my outfits to match them…love.

Being torrented music a friend of mine downloaded the new Bon Iver album and it is so so so beautiful, all the more for him downloading it for me

Friday nights I’m going to a fair tomorrow with my girlfriends, fun fun fun. Candy floss and alcohol.

Half term Week long break from GCSEs…score.

Cigs in the sun Guilty pleasure, best enjoyed with my new bestest friend and a can of Pepsi

Unexpected Deep Meaningful Conversations on the lawn after an exam…another person’s perspective on life is always fresh. :)

Lots of frivolously lovely things this week, because things are pretty awful if I look at it seriously. :P

  47. Another Thursday? Well, things are moving along… Only three more TiLTs until I start my internship!

Pickup Ultimate I went downtown yesterday and joined in on pickup for the first time in my life, and it was a lot of fun. We didn’t get in much playing because of weather, but it seems like a really chilled out group of people, and that set of fields is really easy for me to get to. And they play there like, twice a week, and a few other places that are close-ish to me.
Yummy food as in not dining hall food! I’ve just been eating well since I got home, which is a nice change.
Talking to friends whenever possible. I’ve had such long phone conversations with my former roommate (can’t believe that it’s former now!) and some other friends, and that is just wonderful. My phone will be my lifeline this summer, I think.
The National Gallery of Art is my favorite museum in DC- two huge buildings filled with gorgeous artwork. There were a few special exhibits when I went yesterday that were great, plus I spent time walking through my favorite part of the permanent exhibits. The Modern Art rooms in the East Wing are filled with Picasso, Matisse, and so on. And I love that stuff.

Knowing I’m going to see NKOTB Yes you heard me right I am going to see New Kids On The Block :-) A childhood fantasy fulfilled lol

Having a hot boyfriend Not do I just think he’s hot, a few girls have told me they think he’s hot. I felt all giddy, he’s smart and hot and a million other things, could a girl be anymore lucky? fweee!

Memorial Day weekend Extended weekends are awesome! No work and I get to take Alanna to the zoo this weekend. I can’t wait it should be so exciting and cute(3 year olds get so excited over animals)

Honourable mentions Bananas, vegan corn dogs(odd but works), my friend at work who just gave me a bunch of music, green tea

    * Walking to the post office – it’s such a pretty walk & I’m so happy it’s nice enough out to do this now!

    * Margaret Atwood.

    * Blueberry Muffins – I made a perfect batch last week & I think I need to make more today.

    * Watching the plants in my vegetable garden start to come up!

    * My new daily photo project – a far-away friend & I are emailing each other photos every day. It’s very fun & inspiring!

  55. * 3 of my male music producer friends for endowing me with the tools and knowledge to create crazy electronic music! They have put so much time and effort into turning me into an Ableton whizz, and have been tinkering with frequencies, samples, instruments all morning.. so absorbing. I can’t wait to play a live set!

    * My penpal. She is SUCH a lovely soul and possessed by magic. She always has the kindest words and is a great writer and muse to me.

    * Pukka teas. Nothing better than opening the cupboard to a huge selection and being spoilt for choice each time!

    * A lie-in. I’m pretty sure this is the first ‘normal’ day I have had to relax and not think about anything in weeks.

    Anyways, to my TiLT!
Getting close to old friends I recently began spending time with my best friend from elementary school, and I’m amazed at how much I missed her! She’s hilarious and I feel like we were never apart when we talk!

Having a crush I sometimes think I like having the crush more than dating the guy, heehee. It’s just a great feeling, the butterflies, the excitement of seeing him, and the rush you get when he talks to you… I love it!

Short hair I must say, I didn’t think I’d like having my hair short as much as I do! I feel loads more confident, and although I miss my ponytail, I don’t think I’ll be growing my hair out any time soon!

  61. Ooh, this is a good day for me!

I love, or should I say ich liebe:

finishing all my oral exams – last one today was German, and while I probably could have done better, I think it was ok. Only two more exams to go!

the fact that it’s only about two weeks until I can see my boyfriend again – I really feel the distance when we’re both suffering exam stress. Birmingham to Oxford isn’t far, but it feels like it when I know I can’t go to him, so come June 7th, I shall be there!

trying new things – I went swimming today (I can’t swim very well) with a girl I don’t know too well (I’m shy), in a bikini (I have a scar running all the way down the middle of my stomach, plus I’m not exactly proud of my body). Normally these things would have stopped me, but I decided to try it and it was fun :)

my bed – It’s so comfy with my big duvet to curl up in. I’m sooo sleepy after swimming so now I am going to have a hot shower, climb into it and listen to Rigor Mortis on BBC7. “Pathology, perhaps slightly ironically, will never die.”

Test Match Special – I know, I sound like an old man, but after hating cricket for 19 years of my life, I now quite like it! TMS just sounds like a few men sitting around watching the cricket, having a natter. It’s brilliant, and I’m almost disappointed I have to run errands tomorrow so I won’t be able to hear it all.

Honourable mentions go to my new Lady Luck Rules OK necklaces and my adorable stuffed toys for always making me smile. And of course, this quote:
“He’s not alone in feeling alone, is he? We all think that everyone else has it all sorted out, don’t we? That they’re all walking confidently through life, no map, no need for directions, but it’s not true, is it? We’re all a little lost.”
It came from a radio show called Dr Pfeffer’s Lonely Hearts Club, and it cheers me up a little when I’m feeling lost and lonely.

  63. Dreams i had a really sweet dream the other night which left me feeling warm and fuzzy when i woke up; and i’ve just been thinking how cool it is that we have dreams! our minds are just incredible machines. who could think that a lump of wrinkled protein could create such amazing things.

Marc Chagall i’ve been learning a lot about art these past months and i am just so fascinated by Chagall. i just bought his autobiography and i think i might write a film about him!

Tasseography i’ve been learning to read tea leaves, it’s really neat! this morning i got a duck, which means money coming in; and birds overall mean good news. hopefully someday i’ll be an old lady, dripping in scarves and beads, reading tea leaves for my family.

  68. Somehow, I haven’t done one of these in a while! I was feeling down, but now I’m up.

! DRIVING: I just got my license two days ago, and already I have enjoyed hilarious, awesome, and heartening adventures! Driving with a friend in the sunshine, singing along to Panic At The Disco— I could not ask for a better day.

! SCHOOL ALMOST BEING OUT: In a few weeks, I will no longer be a junior in highschool, but a free, spirited senior-to-be! With my car and my sunglasses and my mix CDs, I am ready to rock this summer.

! BEING ACCEPTED INTO A SUMMER PROGRAM: I was accepted into Maryland Institute College of Art’s summer pre-college program! I will be studying art at a college level for an entire month while dancing about Baltimore and visiting New York. I am so excited!

! FRESH FRUIT: I accidentally went raw, and now I am consuming every and all fruits known to man. I need to pick up a recipe book!

! GOING TO SLEEP EARLY: It’s so nice. Unbelievably nice. Fabulously nice. Fantastic.

I’m in the mood to live brightly and love widely and smile wickedly. Good way to start summer! Hope you are enjoying New York City. I have one shop suggestion— my friend and I went because we were intrigued and giggling and nervous but excited by the entrance. I feel like you would love it.

  70. * Sleeping in- I slept in for the first time this term today and it was lovely, getting up leisurely and going to school at 9:40 makes such a huge difference to my day! * Getting a PAID job as a reviewer for my local newspaper- such a boon, as I’m so hard up at the moment! * Thinking about my radical new haircut- scary and exciting at the same time! I’ll never have had such short hair before… I’m frightened :S * Counting down the days until I’m with my boyfriend again- it’s been two weeks (I think) since I saw him last. Long distance sucks, but the reunions (albeit brief and infrequent) almost make it worth it. * That the exhibition I’m organising is beginning to take off!- it’s of student artwork and I’m very proud to be the driving force behind it. Can’t wait until it becomes a reality and hope it’s successful! * My new digital camera- not the prettiest on the market but it does its job, and well, too!

  76. Life has been… odd for me.
So I figured, even though it’s friday, I might as well do this. I need to do this.

The one thing that has had me doing absurd dances in the hallways is… I MADE SECTION LEADER!!! This is a band thing, so I shall explain to all of you non-bandies why this maskes me giddy with glee. Section leader is… well… the leader of a specific section of instruments. Rarely, he lets freshmen get the job… but I did. And I’m really proud of myself that I made it. Much happiness [:

Other than that, there are small things: paper stars in a pretty glass jar, the new Indiana Jones movie, pearls, pretty black dresses, neon thread, sorting things by colour, IBC rootbeer in glass bottles, and odd but interesting weather.

I also recently learned the power of having a positive attitude when everything around you is going to hell, something I had forgotten lately. Oops… I won’t be doing that again. But, I suppose making mistakes is the best learning tool possible.

I hope all of you have a lovely Memorial Day Weekend… or lovely weekend in general.
