Things I Love Thursday
[ 7 August 2008 ]
Okay, so… exciting news! This is the FIFTY-SECOND TiLT! Do you know what that means? YES! If you’ve been with me since the first TiLT, we’ve now been doing this FOR A YEAR SOLID! I can’t even begin to tell you how awesome that is. It makes me SO happy! & even better is that every week, TiLT just gets stronger & stronger! More new people join in & start to experience the glee! One of the coolest things is that TiLT is spreading all across the internet; I read SO many blogs now where they do a regular love list! It’s fantastic! The more happiness you can generate, the better you feel. Sometimes my mental image of TiLT is a girl on an exercise bike, pedalling like mad, with little heart-shaped bubbles blowing out behind her. I love it! Love it love it love it! So, kudos to you for sticking around & participating, thank you!
Practising my social skills — I have been doing this a lot lately, especially with all the travelling I’ve done. If you can be charming to the people who check you in, it pays dividends. They’ll give you good seats, I guarantee, & even though my suitcases are always over the weight allowance, I never get charged for it. But the thing is, everyone likes a bit of enchantment. Sometimes I almost make it into a game. I like to see how much fabulousness I can extract from people I’ve only just met; I like to give them a chance to prove how completely awesome they are. They almost always delight me, it’s totally great. You should try it, it’s good sport!
Cute emails from amazing people — On Tuesday night I received a really adorable email from… deep breath… Slug from Atmosphere. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, there are not enough exclamation points in the world to adequately express my excitement. By the way, he read your comments & they made him blush! Awww!
Laughing until my cheeks hurt — There is nothing better than spending time with people who really know you & make you laugh. My parents, my best friend Jennie & my ex-boyfriend Alex all fall into this category, & since they’re the people I’ve spent the most time with recently, it’s all good. My cheeks are getting a good work-out. My grandmother’s nickname for me used to be “Face Ache” (charming, right?!) & this week it has never rung more true.
This photograph of Eva Carrière:

My new hair — It took me a couple of days to adjust to the change — after all, I’d been purple for about 10 months — but now I have & I’m LOVIN’ it! Wildilocks did such a good job, & I love that it’s not just a flat one colour all over like it used to be. In the olden days, I used to just slather a bottle of Atomic Pink all over my tresses & hope for the best. But this is a combination of Atomic Pink & Virgin Rose, so the colour is deeper & richer, & I adore it! It looks amazing in the sunlight, & it makes my eyes look intensely aqua. Mermaid eyes! Yay!
Makeshift winter outfits — I am wearing my grey Country Road cardigan as a skirt right now. It’s warm. I’m into it.
Life itself — I went from New York to Melbourne to Wellington in 5 days. I cleared out the life I used to live in four hours after spending five times that many hours on a plane. Now I’m here in New Zealand, quietest place on earth perhaps. To say it has been a drastic adjustment is an understatement, but I am doing pretty well, & I am actually really happy. Going from action central to the place I grew up in is pretty mind-bending, & has presented its own challenges, but I’m convinced that it is good for me! It’s important to be able to be happy wherever you are, because ultimately it’s all about how happy you are with yourself!
Billy Joel — Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)
One of my new favourite songs.
Honorary mentions: “I wish you were here so I could make you raspberry macarons at an obscenely early hour”; a conversation with my lovely friend Jo which incited her to throw double horns; smuggling cupcakes across the border (no kidding!); loooong talks with Jennie; sitting in the sun drinking tea & writing; the fact that even though it is cold, it’s not as bad as I thought it would be!; jumping back on the raw wagon; my super-uber-hyper-pink Barbie manicure with purple gems; making fun plans for NYC in September; sleeping in my new polka-dot hoodie from American Apparel (cozy & cute); awesome boy karma; stalk-o-vision @ the galaverse!; teeny little Fafinettes (see above!); good hands; barbeque rice crackers; soup with lots of pepper; Entourage (did you know I have a crush on Ari Gold?!); Darcy Clay; ugg boots (secret admission: I stole them from my father & they are so hideous but so warm, I cannot stop wearing them, but I promise I will never leave the house in them!), & that whole ‘when it rains it pours’ thing!
“Today I choose life. Every morning when I wake up I can choose joy, happiness, negativity, pain… To feel the freedom that comes from being able to continue to make mistakes & choices… Today I choose to feel life, not to deny my humanity but embrace it.” — Kevyn Aucoin
Your turn… ! Make it a BIGGIE for TiLT’s first birthday! Woooooooooohoo!
Super-love & cupcakes,
Gala ![]()

This is actually my first TILT, even though i’ve been reading since the begining of the site…
1-Change: I’ve spent most of my life waiting to be happy, a lot of “i’ll-be-happy-when…‘s”. For the first time, I feel like I’m living now.
2-Going to Munches: I went to my first bdsm meeting the back of a diner. It was like a normal meal with strangers, just with talk of polyamory.
3-Color Coordination: I’m reorganizing my closet and weeding out what I don’t really want or wear.
Things I Love Thursday:
1. The end of my summer job…I thought the day would never come!!
2. Walking, walking, walking; I’m taking a break from jogging because of a minor injury, but thankfully it’s not enough to make me relinquish looonng walks.
3. Reading. Anything really, science books, Harry Potter, mysteries, whatever :)
4. Aroound the World in 80 Days
5. About a Boy
6. Sunglasses and sunblock.
7. I finally am at the point where I am enjoying my wardrobe and appreciating it and not constantly pining for something new; I buy myself the occasional new item, but overall, my closet has become incredibly well-stocked, and I’ve been spending my money on bigger and better things.
1 Atmosphere!
2 The pixies
3 Day 6 of Raw Fu Challenge, and while I haven’t been 100% raw even though I want to be, I have had a green or pink smoothie everyday and I’m eating a delicious salad.
4 My skin is already clearing up!
5 I have a beautiful mirror in my bedroom over my desk that I got for a tenner in my local charity shop.
6 Larabars
7 I got a £25 face cream called ‘Skin nanny’ free(!) with the special offer at lush.
8 Gala Darling. Of course, you just keep inspiring me to make my life better, make me want to be the type of person who jumps out of bed in the morning and is ridiculously excited. (Right now though, I’m having some super dense dreams that leave me groggy but it’ll pass with the detox I reckon.)
~A day off, to clean my house
~A clean puppy to snuggle whilst I nap instead of cleaning my house!
~Being able to order coffee in Greek!!!!!!
~Bellydancing!
~And Sleep!!!!!!!
~Also fun creative ideas that actually go through!
AN EMAIL FROM SLUG.
oh boy. that is astonishing an i am so jealous/stoked.
things i love:
1. books. i have been reading about ferdinand and isabella of spain and it rules.
2. free lunch.
3. caramel soy shakes from burgerfuel.
4. my new skirt.
5. the idea of quitting my job.
1. the 35 song long playlist i made on harry potter’s birthday
2. packing my life into boxes! i’m leaving for college in three weeks… unfortunately it’s taking a little bit longer than four hours.
3. ramen
4. getting a massage for the first time!
5. continuously working on a painting that only keeps getting better
Gala, it’s ace to read you’re in such an amazing place. Kudos for that!
I love:
1) Melbourne on a Thursday morning. There’s such a buzz as I ride the tram up Swanston Street, it’s electric, like the world knows it’s onto a good thing and the weekend’s just around the corner and that’s reason enough to be charming to the world.
2) Listening to amazingly evocative tunes. This morning I brushed tears from my eyes as I listened to Pavarotti sing Nessun Dorma – how exquisite!
3) Friends who see you through a (mini) break-down. I must work in the best office in the world – I lost my s#*% on Monday and spent all day questioning Life, the Universe and Everything and my colleagues were AMAZINGLY supportive, and even baked me cupcakes!
4) That feeling of unsettledness when you know something amazing’s around the corner and if you just give a little time to yourself to sit in the uncomfortable, awesome and wonderful new things begin to come your way.
5) Identifying your dreams and going for them!
xx
- Getting my friend into Cocteau Twins and Hanne Hukkelberg. I am most excited when I expose people to music I like and they respond positively!!!!
- The Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter cupcake I had today – courtesy of Kickass Cupcakes, natch.
- The Garment District – (cue music) it’s not a district, it’s a store! Anyone from the Boston area who gets that???
- Nailpolish that looks like my nails but improved via opaque shimmer – also, my new lip stain!
- My ‘Carpe Diem’ necklace – it doubles as a sundial. If only I knew how to work it….
- ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT! – I am hopelessly addicted now. I hope Liza Minnelli doesn’t become my new lover…
- Possibly going to the Sigur Ros concert – oh sweet Jesus make it happen.
- Going to a costume party as 1/2 of a LOLCATS image – my friend and I are going as the infamous ‘i is a burito’ image. I am the kitty wrapped in a green blanket, while she wears the caption. Creative much?
TiLT – and the fact that I get to actually participate on a Thursday for a change, now that Gala’s back in my time zone.
Fascinators – I found the coolest one in an op shop the other day, and just the thought of wearing it to my dull, grey, Hutt workplace makes me smile. One day I will do it, and brave the gasps of dismay from my sartorially boring colleagues.
Adult dreams – A couple of nights ago I had a dream about Lenny Kravitz, and he wasn’t wearing any pants. I will never get the image of Lenny Kravitz’s circumcised cock out of my head.
Vince Vaughn – So funny.
Real Hot Bitches – My 80s comedy dance troupe. I never thought I would ever wear lycra in public until I became a Bitch.
“Makeshift winter outfits — I am wearing my grey Country Road cardigan as a skirt right now. It’s warm. I’m into it.” —How very Edie Beale!
Planning things The society and I are planning a costumed tea-party for a dear friend who really deserves a knees-up for her birthday. The theme is suitably dark and eerie for someone born around All Hallows Eve…and that gives us lots of tricks and treats to plan.
Halloween in general My FAVORITE holiday of the year…I’ve been looking forward to it since Feb.
Listening to rants on strange topics Wether or not you should capitalise the ‘F’ in Faerie…who cares? Apparently Malik. (I do pretend to read and ignore him but he makes me laugh).
The talent I LOVE the people who read my blog and leave me messages with how amazing they are…(though I can imagine you get this x100) There are too many fabulous people in the world.
And my no.1 thing?
Hearing people describe me It’s unsual to hear yourself summed up. In this past week I’ve been introduced to lots of people, and heard me and my life described and summarised a lot.
From ‘fantastical’ to ‘off-kilter’ I take it all as compliments and they make me laugh.
Holiday excitement! in a month’s time, my boyfriend & I are spending a week on a Greek island. We did this last year, but this time we’ve got a little more moneys so we’re staying half board at a hotel rather than a self-catered apartment. Woop!
Birthday – I’m generally a bit of a birthday scrooge (everyone has one! and mine’s in summer so no one is ever around for a big crazy party) but my 22nd birthday was last Sunday and I had a FABULOUS day! We went here: www.goape.co.uk/ then came home to a bbq feast and pimms prepared by my lovely mum. Chilled out and happy.
Surprises – my boyfriend is normally broke and I’m the organised one, but next weekend for a happy birthday / happy 3 years magoogle we’re going to London for the day and I just don’t know what he’s got up his sleeve!
Appreciating the girls in my life – this year certain friendships have sprouted and blossomed and I think I’ve matured enough to understand and accept the different relationships I have with people (I used to get quite jealous of some people – why don’t I have a million friends??). I got birthday cards from four girls in partciular that made me realise just how much I love and appreciate the fabulous people that I do have.
Rounders – the game brings out a massive competitive streak in me. Love it!
Contentment – I definitely get seasonal affective disorder, so I’m really enjoying the calm and happiness that’s washed over me this summer.
Its been a while… but I think I remember how to do this :)
* spending time beside my love in deck chairs watching movies in the library
* having people compliment my choice of artworks on the tram ride home after collecting it from the framer
* being woken up with kitten purrs and boy kisses
* knitting! knitting! knitting!
* crossing things off my ToDo list at work
* walking a little further each day around my neighbourhood
* being able to answer questions confidently and correctly in my workplace
* the way my hair is all shiny, smooth and healthy
* cold melbourne mornings with the sun sneaking through to warm your face
Hey Gala!
Hippy bipple day to TiLT, Hippy bipple day to TiLT!!
Things I’m lovin’:
1. Bic Runga – so chilled & such an ethereal voice (she’s from NZ yeah!)
2. My family – they are soooo amazing
3. Knowing that I always have the CHOICE! To be happy, sad, wonderful and all the other incredible emotions I can create
4. Finally getting to the point where I MUST do something about my wardrobe – what I want and don’t want – doing what Ipsum is doing and aiming for the contentedness of Aurelie!! YAY!
*** Job interviews! I’ve been unemployed for what seems like forever, but I feel like things are finally happening, and that’s a terrific feeling. Keep your fingers crossed for me!!
***Sleeping in my super soft bed at my parents house. Mmmmm.
***Joan Didion. I just read her book of essays, Slouching Towards Bethlehem, and it’s amazing!
***Taking style tips from Mad Men. I bought a black pencil skirt that goes with a tight little gray sweater…I feel curvy and sexy like Joan! ( blogs.amctv.com/mad_men_photo_… ) Now I just need a tweed skirt like that!
***Long talks with good friends.
***Delicious frozen yogurt. Mmmmm.
***Old pictures of my grandparents when they were just dating/married. They were so sweet in a great 1940’s way!
***Clearing out a bunch of my old stuff to sell at a swap meet. It’s actually painful for pack rat me, but I think it’s a good exercise. It’s good to let go.
My first TiLT :)
1. Writing in red pen in a buff-coloured notepad
2. Eating Green & Black’s dark chocolate while reading Hamlet
3. The sheet music section of my local library that I never noticed before
4. Going food shopping at 2am
A little short perhaps, but still! I’m actually a little iffy at the moment because I’m having sleeping troubles; hopefully by next week I’ll be able to add ‘falling asleep in less than 2 hours’ to my list 8)
Have a lovely weekend everyone! xx
First of all, Ari Gold is such a babe, so I’m gonna have to agree with you there.
Ok, my list:
Seth Meyers: I met him while standing in a grocery store line-up in Brooklyn Heights. I’ve had a bit of a crush on him ever since he became a regular on SNL and needless to say I was more than pleased when he turned out to be as charming, intelligent and cute in person. He actually waited for me to pay so we could talk for a few minutes. Sweet celebs brighten my day.
New York: I did it Gala! I’m in New York. I’m dogsitting for a couple and staying in their apartment for a month rent free (total blessing!) and it’s this crazy whirlwind of trying to find an apartment/missing my family/loving the city/meeting new people/never wanting to sleep/being insanely exhausted etc. I just love this city.
Veronica Mars: I actually spent about 3 days watching the entire show, 3 seasons and while I felt pretty useless getting nothing done, it’s so addictive. Why do all the great shows get cancelled????
Wigs: So I went out and bought 3 wigs from a store called ‘Piggy Wiggy’ (I’m not even making this up, so cool) in pink, blonde and red for only $40 each and I love the look on peoples faces when they see me haha
Getting a manicure & pedicure: for some reason it has taken me 20 years to finally give in and get a mani/pedi. My god, I felt like a girl experiencing her first orgasm. Delight, wonder, lust for more. Who doesn’t love fab nails anyway?
Happy birthday TiLT! Here’s mine:
London’s ‘awful’, rainy overcast weather. I love it so much, and it’s so nice to be back after spending a week in the Colorado sun (ick, haha).
Having TONS of time to myself. I literally live alone with two dogs right now and have no obligations, so it’s pretty self-indulgent and I’m a fan.
Wearing my glasses again. (It makes me feel smarter and like a librarian-chic babe).
The X-Files. Agent Mulder is so pretty in a cheesy-hunky way…
Eating loads of nuts.
Being semi-academic again. Summer break was nice, but it’s good to be back to writing papers and discussing foreign policy.
Dancing! Singing! Being ridiculous with no one to look at me funny— though tomorrow I fully intend on taking my ridiculousness outside and sharing it with the world!.
Happy birthday TILT!!!
Things I love this thursday???
- Rock concerts with old friends
- Sex and the City marathons
- Breakfast food for dinner
- Cleaning out my closet
- perfect cups of coffee – the third season of the mighty boosh – juno finally being out on DVD – my mum – holding hands with the guy i adore – geisha makeup
Things I love…
1. These cool end of winter mornings when it’s no longer freezing and you can feel that spring is just around the corner…it makes me feel as if the world is full of possibility!
2. Being on top of my thesis and that my supervisor told me the other day that what I’ve written so far is excellent.
3. Work. I love my job at the moment, which is the way life should be! I actually have fun there, and that makes me happy.
4. Jurlique face wash – I just bought this on the recommendation of a friend and it smells divine and feels just as good.
things i love:
> Beansprouts
>> Bedroom dancing
>>> Signing the tenancy agreement for my new flat today – the first time I have ever lived on my own! hurrah!
>>>> Gala. For being yet another inspirational woman in my life, keeping me colourfully aware of the law of attraction every time i drop by.
and this:
‘Sometimes it takes a great sky to find that
first, bright and indescribable wedge of freedom in your own heart.’
David Whyte

Oh and 30 Rock!
GAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHERE DID THE MINIFAFINETTES COME FROM!?!?!?
SO CUTE!!!!!!!!!
“Practising my social skills”
This one is my favourite. Beautiful! I think I’ll have to adopt this sport myself!
Happy Birthday TiLT!
*My writing class. I look forward to it each day and I’m sad it ends next week.
*Being able to balance on the train! I’ve been riding the train every day, and I haven’t fall over once. It makes me smile when I don’t need to hold on to anything. Maybe I’m not so uncoordinated as I thought.
*Looking forward to high school. There are moments when I’m scared s$#@less at the thought, but I’m excited to meet new classmates and all the new experiences…
*This list. I’ve been down these past few days, but being forced to think of good things is cheering me up.
*Having too many books to read. I’m going away in a week- I hope I can just relax and read the whole time! Oh, and shop of course.
*My room. I love lying on my bed at night and just look around. I’m finally happy with it. Although I have tons more ideas to play around with.
Happy Birthday TiLT!!
Ok first up, I LOVE those photos you’ve used up top. Too awesome.
++Choc mint bomb iced coffee’s from Gloria Jeans
++ 3 days until road trip Christchurch to Auckland – first ever campervan trip!!
++ 2 weeks until I fly out to London, eee!
++ New blue black locks (not loving it staining my pillow though..)
++ Sunshine in christchurch! It’s aussie weather, love it!
++ My new black boots. Rock hard.
Thrift shopping! Especially because I get to shop at the store near my grandma’s house, which I always have good luck at.
Pumpkin pie! Enough said. :D
Twitter! I’m meeting all sorts of people who go to my school that I haven’t actually met in person. Hee.
School! I can’t wait until I get to go back! ^^ Big nerd, I am.
Skirts! I finally have got into wearing them regularly.
Stompy boots! Yup.
When I was a tiny little girl I used to listen to Lullabye by Billy Joel late at night and feel all warm and safe. My Mum has always been a huge Billy Joel fan (she pinched his bum when she was 19!) and she gave me a mixed tape and an old fashioned tape player, and wow. Best memories! So thank you for adding that in there. I’m all teary!
My tilt:
-Raw chocolate from Loving Earth. Umm HI, YUM.
-Raw Lasagne recipe from goneraw.com. I’m currently soaking sunflowers for the first step! It’s going to take me about three days to make the whole thing haha!
-Finally going back to hip hop tonight, woo!
-Inglot makeup, I love it. It’s the student’s MAC :)
-The fact it’s 11am on a Thursday and I’m sitting in a towel on my couch with not a care in the world.
-My new friend. We have so much in common and I just lovvvveee herrrr. She’s having her birthday at a hip hop club tomorrow night, we’re soul mates.
-Nietzsche.
Bye bye.
This is my first TiLT, so…I’ll try to make this good.
The East Coast- I moved to Michigan at the end of June, and I’m now visiting my brother and his wife in Massachusetts. The graveyards here are much better, and so are the roads.
My new phone- I have an LG Rumor, it’s brilliantly lime green, with a full slide out keyboard, and it’s slowly becoming my life. Getting used to typing on a keyboard with my thumbs is kind of bizarre, though.
New England Clam Chowder- I’m in New England, I love soup, and the chowder is always good here!
Mascara- I have developed a supreme appreciation for mascara lately. My lower lashes are nothing without 3 coats, and then they are FABULOUS.
My eyebrows- I shave them off and draw them on a la Amanda Palmer from The Dresden Dolls. It makes me happy.
My brother and his wife- They are the most hilarious, happy, lovely people on Earth. Living with my father makes me hate my family, and then I come here and realize why I haven’t just faded into nothingness throughout the years!
Things I don’t love right now? The latest season of Project Runway. What is up with that guy who loves tanning?
Love,
Katie Bird
I missed writing TilT last week – out of laziness! So here goes…
Running – I’ve been trying to get back into this for a couple of months… The first few weeks of running are always torture for me, but then suddenly something clicks and it starts to be fun again! I’m not quite back up to my old distances yet but I’m starting to enjoy the time I spend running. I wear my headphones and listen to the CHEESIEST music ever when I run, like John Farnham (!) and Scissor Sisters, and lots of cock rock. It becomes my own private world of simultaneous dorkiness and fabulous physicality.
Gem Wilder’s Lenny Kravitz dream – hilarious!
Doing cross-stitch – my Gran initially taught me, then I went through a mad phase of it during a relationship break-up a couple of years ago, and now I’ve just bought an awesome new kit off ebay that I can’t wait to start! It’s such a meditative process, just passing the needle in and out of cloth for hours on end and watching the image unfold….
Dogs – so many cute local dogs in my neighbourhood! There was a guy in the winebar last Friday night with an Italian greyhound that suddenly decided it wanted to be friends with us once rillettes were brought to our table! And then there’s the incredibly smart border collie that lives about five doors down from me who is so sweet and communicative it’s almost as if he can talk! I want a dog!
Happy Birthday TiLT! I believe that participating in this has really improved my overall disposition.
A week at the beach next week with the boy, his family, and his ADORABLE niece and nephews!
Imagining how I’m going to decorate my apartment in a few weeks.
Posietint by Benefit gives me the best flushed cheeks!
Buying new clothes that actually look good on me!
Appreciating my new friend/fellow intern in our last week together before she goes back to California forever.
Going into Anthropologie and dreaming about buying teacups and teapots.
The simple deliciousness of bread and butter and strong, rich coffee.
Oooops, double post!
Also meant to include a link to THIS Morrissey song called ‘The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get’
www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nAMFW…
Love this one!
Happy 1st Birthday TiLT!
• Sleeping- since coming home for my week away in Melbourne last week, I have caught up on my lost sleep and finally feel like I am having a good nights sleep every night. There really isn’t anything as good as a proper nights rest in your own bed.
• Home- Even though I had a good time in Melbourne last week seeing my friends and family, I am glad to be home. My trip last week made me realise how good I have it here- I spend hardly anytime travelling to get to work etc, and I don’t have to endure the constant rush that seems to fill Melbourne. While I love Melbourne, at this time, it is not the place for me… It’s great for a catch up with friends, shopping and food though!
• Family- They are all very special to me and I love them all. I am very lucky to have such caring and wonderful parents and a pretty cool sister too.
• Shopping- I had a great time in Melbourne shopping and got myself all of the lovely things that I can’t buy here at home!
Oh. Darcy Clay. :(
Happy things:
Just got home to find my new for-ballet-teaching-purposes “Mean Maori Mean” Code t-shirt. Am I the bogan-est ballet teacher ever?
Listening to 80s U2 – my man is away so I can play it (he’s sick of it). I was 14 when The Joshua Tree came out, and because of Greg Carroll and ‘One Tree Hiil’ everyone in NZ loved it. (It was the law!) I remember how fanciable Bono was in the ‘With or Without You’ video – I love a cute man with long hair! I really need to get Rattle and Hum again – I had it on tape and loved it to death.
Birthday time again, which means licking the icing bowl! (It also means my house is properly tidy in preparation for weekend party-guests.)
Being in the same timezone, nay, same island as the lovely G-Darl. Nothing like an email convo on a slow Monday morning . . . :D
I can’t believe how much I love my job!
Reading about everyone’s musical passions is SO heartwarming. I’m surprised how many people like Queen . . ! (I do, too.) Can’t believe your man Slug contacted you, Miss Gala! Whoo! “OMG palpitations”, indeed!
Chuck – ooh that sexy Yvonne in her milkmaid outfit! Swoon . . .
1. Getting paid today
2. Attempting to plan a trip to visit my 2 best friends (Ireland and Canada oh my)
3. Waking up smiling
4. My cat keeping my lap warm as I type this haha
I needed TiLT today. Its been a bad week but things always get better :D Just have to see the bright side of things, right Gala? And happy birthday TiLT!
oOoO I hope I spot you in Wellington!!
Sade- I forgot to add on my TiLT- I also had my first pedicure in Melbourne and I love that my feet now feel and look beautiful- goodbye deadskin and hello deep purple toes!
Gala- I love your new hair, its such a beautiful colour and really looks wonderful!
oh. happy birthday to tilt!
today i love
1.my determination.
2.getting an education in all different forms. not just school.
3.my faith
4. positive communities i can turn to online and offline for that extra motivation push
5. living life to its fullest
Ah! Tell us what Slug said!....
katie — He said he wants to marry me & have my baaaaaabies! ;D ;D ;D Naw. He thanked me for the article & said some other cuuuuute shit. Haha.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TiLT!
- first, TilT, obviously. how nice it is that it has become a habit for me to log my small (and not-so-small) blessings each week!
- an impromptu invitation leading to a trip downstate this starting this weekend to visit an old friend & then spend a few days with my boyfriend (who i haven’t seen in a month to a month and a half).
- my job. most people would hate it, but i am enamored with it. i can dress/look the way i want, they are flexible with my schedule, my co-workers are amazingly kind and have given me a chance to meet more people on campus, they seem to value me as an employee, and they also feed us fairly often ;)
- living by myself. it is my fifth day in my new apartment and i feel MUCH less stress then i have in a long time. i have had things simplified things a lot—i don’t own a couch yet, nor pots and pans, for example—*BUT* i am finding this way of life very liberating! i feel like it’s an adventure and challenge. plus, i am learning the generosities of others-one friend learned i didn’t have a tv (something i wasn’t too concerned about, honestly, since i grew up without one)and he brought one over by the end of the day without even asking! wow!
- my anniversary plant (a peace lily—voted “best desk plant of 2007”?? hah)!
- complimentary copy of a book i was thinking of borrowing from the library, on a suggestion of my mom. apparently it is the “one book, one community” book club book for my college town and that is why they were giving copies away!
- my deep bathtub here (shower curtain being something else i haven’t bought yet)!
- eating lots of fruit/stealing lots of fruit from the dining hall. i feel like a little squirrel :)
p.s. i just realized it…BILLY JOEL! he is my favorite artist & i am glad to see him featured here.
good choice, gala :)
Just one thing for today: COLLEGE! I’m moving in ten days to go to New mexico, where I’m triple-majoring; Archaeology, Linguistic Anthropology, and Human Evolutionary Science with a concentration in genetics. It’s going to be AWESOME.
Happy Birthday Tilt!!!
Getting letters I got a letter from my best friend who lives 3 hours away from me. We know that we can also send emails (and we do) but we both love getting post in the mail. It’s just so… old-fashioned and makes you feel loved.
My boyfriend and friends I love them to bits and they just keep surprising me with the stuff they do. Which also makes for lots of laughs.
Going to see my best friend This weekend I will get to see my best friend (the one i write the letters to). I can’t wait, I absolutely adore her and miss her to bits. Photo time.
Spending time with mum My mum lives near where my best friend lives, and I don’t see my mother as much. As I get older, we’ve gotten closer and I like spending time with her… so this weekend we are going to have a girlie weekend. Exciting much?
Assesments done I know I say this alot but it makes me really happy when I have finished an assessment and I don’t have to worry about it anymore.
Making new friends I have made some new friends at work and they are really quite interesting.
Painting nails They look so good in winter to have bright nail polish on.
Finding treasures Especially the treasures that you thought to have lost and then you find them again. They are the best.
Beautiful mentions sun shining; rainbows after storms; smiling friends; pretty pen colours; contiuning to write my story; spending class time to write back letters; pink hearts; lollipops; life; belief in angels and fairies;
* Going home to London on Saturday for the first time in eight months- this is the longest I’ve ever gone without going home or seeing my parents…
* Going to Denmark and Sweden, and getting to introduce Scandinavia, my favourite place, to my boyfriend…
* The pretty vintage dress my co-worker gave me today…
* The fact that Baileys has barely any lactose in it so I can drink it…

Today I love…
Packing with a quickness So, I’m moving from Chi City back to Michigan for a few weeks before school starts and I head back to Boston. Guh. But I packed up my little sublease so fast that I could watch Be Kind Rewind.
Homecoming by Kanye West I can relate so much right now. I love that Chris Martin talks about Lake Michigan. I’m listening to it on repeat. Also, I’m on a high from seeing him at Lollapalooza on Sunday.
Lollapalooza It was so great and I spent it with such a good pal. I loved it. I want to go to other major festivals now.
Mommsy My mother is coming with my cousin to pick me up tomorrow. I can’t wait to show them everything I found in this city, this summer.
Reflection I’m in a transition in my life, moving in with my boyfriend in the fall and trying to find out who I will be after school. Serious thinking to do. Feels good, I should journal about it all.
Starbucks Cookie I bought it a week ago and it’s still soft. A miracle, I think so.
Baby, do you remember when fireworks on Lake Michigan?
i LOOOOVE
*my boyfriend. He is so unpredictedly perfect. He’s so good at everything I want to be good at, and he’s dashing.
*flying first class. There was a booking error and I got bumped up. Am I the luckiest girl in the world or what?
*friends who can drive. My friend Sidney just got her license and it’s so nice seeing her around with our friends. They’re usually such homebodies, so I’m always really excited to see them in passing.
*picnics! I went to a park before work yesterday with a boy I hadn’t seen since June and we noshed on mashed potatoes and homemade caramel and it was wicked fun and way easier (hanging out with him) than I expected.
*where I work. I’m a tutor at a local center, and it’s really comfortable and nice. I like knowing the kids and the director has been coming up with new ideas for improvement I’m totally excited about.
*being back east. It is HOT!
*my mama. I want to list her every time she is such a wonderful woman.
*TiLT! Happy Birthday! :)
Vegetables!
Book signings and fashion shows altogether (even if I don’t participate in them, it feels like very good karma to have all the beauty and coolness in one city at the same time)
In the same vein, SARK is coming to New York in September! This pales in comparison to an e-mail from Slug, but here’s to more goodness, more love!!!
I love…
Building my communication skills with my partner. We never let a communication breakdown slow us down. We’ll talk that bitch out for hours until it’s all good again.
Dying my hair I’m back to brown for job interviewing. I miss my pink hair, but I actually really enjoy brown! I feel like a ninja, because nobody is staring at me 24/7. I think I might try a natural red soon. :)
Charm bracelets I just started one. I have two charms!
Job interviews My first one is coming up soon!
Appreciative letters and gifts. I like to know that I do my job well. :)
Working up a sweat. It makes me feel like I’m not wasting my awesome bod. :P
Countdowns ...tick, tick, tick…. so CLOSE!! One more TiLT away from moving day!
kittens ... do I need to explain that one? x3
Things I love THIS Thursday…
Rick Astley: I just got back into his music after a long hiatus – such a pity he quit at the height of his fame.
Communicating with my ex: We had a long talk the other day, and we’re settled on being through for good, and just being friends.
Jane Austen: I can’t begin to tell you how much I love her, and I’m taking a whole university course on her works…love love!
My new university regime: Oh how I adore having NO computers!
Meeting interesting people in tutorials: Yesterday I met a girl from Dallas (who commented on my pink cowboy boots) and a girl who’d also lived in Southeast Asia for a few years, and travelled in Africa for a few months.
Supportive family: For the first time since my parents died, my family have been stepping up to help me.
My upcoming trip to Darwin: I get to see my boyfriend again, and for the first time since we decided that we WOULD try and make a relationship work, over 2000 miles and a month at a time between seeing each other. He’s a total sweetheart though, so it’s easy to remember the good and forget the bad about this sort of relationship!
i LOVE that you love ari gold. he’s my ideal husband. :’)
This week my loves are:
*Anthony Green’s brand new solo album, Avalon. It’s just about all I have listened to for two straight days.
*completely overhauling my room. It’s still in the “not-quite-finished” stage, but I’m getting there! Finally!
*Breaking Dawn. Yay for vampire love stories. Double yay for an author who doesn’t think happy endings are overrated.
* This: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IlNLP…
It’s Anthony Green from Circa Survive and Casey Crescenzo from The Dear Hunter singing an AMAAAAZING cover of Bjork’s Unravel. It makes me sad, but in a really good way.
*really REALLY nice new manager at work. Hooray!
*inspiring friends, and being inspired by friends
*wandering around the neighborhood alone on a sunny morning, in a sundress, with gorgeous music filling my ears.
Regarding your mention of wearing ugg boots outside…
I am currently on my lunch break, in a business suit with Uggs.
I recently had surgery on my foot and I can’t wear proper shoes yet, so I’m at work in my chocolate brown, knee high Uggs.
Its interesting to see peoples faces when they notice…half of the people in my office are jealous (I’ve never been warmer…mornings in Sydney are COLD) and the other half just look confused.
Its a great look. I like to think I’ll start a trend.
-my tidied up bedroom… it’s always a mess but now when i’ve tidied it up it actually looks nice and i feel much better…
-an old lady randomly telling me that i looked nice yesterday. and just old people in general
-my porridge morning routine that i started in winter
-nice sales assistants, that you feel like are actually helping you out and not just trying to sell whatever they can
-my new clothes, especially my fabulous black cocktail dress, went on a shopping spree for the first time in many months and god it felt good! ;)
-my upcoming first date this weekend… ok actually i’m a bit nervous but i think it will be fun
-my friends farewell party this weekend will be great, but i’m also sad she’s leaving
-i’m going to meet up with a friend of a friend that i’ve never met this weekend (wow i have a lot of plans this weekend…) that just moved here to sydney a week ago. i think she doesn’t know anyone here yet and it’s her birthday so i’m going to get her some nice cupcakes ;)
-uni starting is getting me all stressed out but i think if i’ll put in some effort it will be really good! which means that i’ll have to stop procrastinating on the internet and start doing my research… at least if i want all my weekend plans to work out!
i’m thankful for best friends and cute foreigners and rainy day parades and laughing right before sleep and eating rice krispy’s and water gun fights and being happy even though sometimes i feel alone and my senior year almost starting so i can finally get out of here! and kumbrabow, cant forget kumbrabow. and FIREWORKS!! :)
oh and TiLt how could i forget ?
it will be thursday for me in 1 hr and 15 min. the things i love so far:
+ hamburgers
+ the led zeppelin kick i’ve been on lately
+ the launch of this site: www.twistcollective.com/
+ making someone’s day. i called up a friend of mine because i was randomly thinking of her and it turned out she was lonely and was so happy that i called. don’t you just love that?
+ the fact that i use plus signs as my bullets
+ my new (old) laptop. as well as my new (old) ipod mini to put into my new (old) car – all inherited from my brother. thanks
+ anthony green’s new album “avalon”
Pt II
My Roomate She is from China and is sad I’m leaving. She just moved here from china two months ago. She surprised me with the greatest scarf. It says “China silk” on the package.
So funny that it’s TiLT’s birthday. First off, I think I’ve participated in almost every week. But also, first on my list this week?
My nineteenth birthday was Monday! And I have awesome friends. I remember last year feeling like no one cared that it was my birthday. This year I have like 40 people messaging me on facebook, phone calls, emails, etc etc etc. It was a lot of fun.
My internship is almost over! Two more days of work and then I get two weeks off, hurray!
My program is going quite spiffily. I need to not take it personally when kids don’t come, because a lot of the times they just aren’t there, but today was great.
My friends basically kick ass and I love talking to them/texting them/everything about them.
Project Runway is love. Always.
Eggs are a slight obsession lately. Not sure why. Jezebel.com keeps having these posts about breakfast food, and it’s driving me nuts! In a good way.
First of all, I must say that I continue to be utterly in love with your new hair. It looks so wonderful
The things I’m currently loving-
1. My new job! I still can’t believe I’m getting paid to sit and play with yarn.
2. The way my dog’s head smells.
3. When the kitten licks the back of my head.
4. My little local bus system. They’re so friendly, and if I start on it and then get a transfer to the bigger city system, the whole thing ends up being cheaper than if I got on the bigger city system directly. It makes me feel all cunning and sneaky, even though it’s totally legit.
5. My husband, especially on the rare occasions I actually get to see him awake.
Entourage, hiding out, my bed, breaking communication, pomegranate vodka, imagining a life in hollywood, highschool parties, cutting up magazines, bubble baths, people saying amazing things about me after i leave, red nails, imagining people brushing their teeth, the joker, old movies, witty conversations with people i don’t know, jocks, & composition notebooks.
Of course, I must do a tilt for it’s birthday.
throws confetti around+Ridiculously adorable things found in my craft store [named after my dad, too!], like giant googley eyes [I’m talking bigger than quarters], jewelry parts, cute cupcake decorations including dinosaur sprinkles and edible shimmer powder, etc. etc.
+Band things
+All of my obsenely, awesomely nerdy friends
+Life in general
+The cupcakes I made just because and went crazy with buttercream frosting [but it’s ok, because buttercream is amazing]
+The fact that my parents just celebrated their 23rd anniversary yesterday. Seriously, 23 years and they’re still in loooooove. Isn’t that just amazing?
+The movie Reign Over Me, which is sad and sweet and heavy and named after a Who song. How could I not love it?
+Disasterville! A very cute blog, which has been added to my list of People I Must Obsess Over Daily. I love and gal who inspires me to love my inherent strangeness, to own it.
Which reminds, me, the last thing is: iCiNG! Sometimes I forget how much this place means to me, and how important what you do is. But I just remembered. The lovely nopareils here always remind me to love myself, whatever that may be, unabashedly and loudly.
Thanks for that, Gala darling. I wuve you all. n.n
“Today I choose life. Every morning when I wake up I can choose joy, happiness, negativity, pain… To feel the freedom that comes from being able to continue to make mistakes & choices… Today I choose to feel life, not to deny my humanity but embrace it.”
This quote completely spoke to me Gala, and I think that this has actually made my Thursday. We got the bad news earlier this week that my mum has been diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer, and it’s been hard to maintain positivity in such a scary and uncertain situation. With that in mind, the things I love this Thursday are:
+My Friend M who drove all the way down from the North Shore, AKL, as soon as she found out
+All my friends that have been there for me in various ways since we found out
+My awesome lecturers and tutors at university who have released me from all attendance requirements this semester and will support me if I need to stay home with mum when she feels sick from chemo
+Witchery… the clothing label. In love, seriously. Will be the beginning of my new skinny-me wardrobe.
+Small children on the train… they get so excited!
+My friend S who is visiting me at work tonight and bringing dark chocolate…
+My beautiful mum who is determined to fight this thing and come out a winner.
a biggie for TILT first birthday…well, all I seem to have in me tonight is my absolute love and deep appreciation for you, dear Gala Darling! You make me smile even in my darkest times.
I love and appreciate you so very much!!!
Always-
Kendra Jacklyn

-Party on Friday! One of my best friends is turning 18 and throwing a huge bash.

I forgot to put in.
-The emails I get from my Mum everyday giving me cute updates about what our cat is doing and how much she loves and misses me. I can’t get a grin off my face for hours after reading them.
things I love this thursday…
+ the fact that today alone I’ve accomplished a few goals i’ve set for myself. registering for a class, finishing a book that’s been in progress for a year, wearing a skirt, haha.
+ my boyfriend who i probably won’t see much of for the next week and a half for he’s going on vacation with some girl friend of his. a test of our relationship i suppose. :(
+ “heart ain’t a brain” by chris brown.
Things I Love Thursday:
♡ Caipirinhas. I got turned on to them by a friend of mine. They’re pure Brazilian alcoholic deliciousness, and I adore them. To make one, you slice half a lime into four wedges, then place them along with two teaspoons of Muscovado sugar into an old-fashioned glass, mashing them together with a wooden spoon or muddler if you have one. Finally, fill the glass with crushed ice and 1⅔ fl oz of cachaça, which is made from sugarcane juice just like rum. Add just a drop of pomegranate syrup if it tickles your fancy and serve.
♡ My new Luella miniskirt. It’s buttercream yellow denim fabulousness, and clashes perfectly with pretty much everything I own. Today I wore it with my thrift-store cobwebby cardigan (pinned all over with a bunch of oversized safety pins) my sister’s blue United Colors of Benetton boots. So much fun!
♡ My sister. She’s five years older then me and is a graphic designer-cum-home decorator, though the homes she decorates are usually the apartments of her arty friends. She has my mom’s massive blue eyes and luminous skin, lucky goose, and calls me every single day driving in her little, beat-up car. Oh, and she lets me borrow her clothes for months at a time. How could you not love her?
- Jason Schwartzman in The Darjeeling Limited. I love his moustache and his flippy hair and his shortness. “I love you too but I’m going to mace you in the face!!” (Honourable mention: Adrien Brody’s nose)
- Losing my lovehandles
- Fleet Foxes. Heard them on David Letterman the other day and now I’m obsessed. Especially Mykonos and Meodowlarks
- The ice cream man’s stubble
- Not being a freshman anymore/ Thinking up cruel things to do to the new freshmen :)
- My toe hair
- Running 3 miles a day
- The Jonas Brothers’ eyebrows
- Doughboys
- Walking With A Ghost – Tegan and Sara, Death to Everyone – Bonnie Prince Billy, I Started A Joke – Beegee’s, Cars – Gary Numan
im dedicating my TiLT to my son today, who’s birthday is on saturday – 5! I have been mixing up different colored icing all day, cos he wants cupcakes instead of a cake! hehe. * salad sandwiches * pietro’s salad dressing * baking with little kids * best friends moving closer * dress up parties * outdoor dance parties!! * disco finger guns xoxo
Things I Love Almost Thursday:
- My b-day which was this Monday, quite fitting for TILT’s first b-day, don’t you think? – Going back to college which coincides with my b-day. I got to see all my friends and get really excited about my new subjects. – NANA My favorite manga, totally great. Better than any soaps I’ve ever seen (including Mexican telenovelas) – My family They are the best
Honorable mentions:
Shana Pol, Alekz, Inge, Lizbeth, Diego, Landeta, Mike, being the only girl in one class, hugging, laughing, dancing, new semester, new clothes.
YOU!!!
Happy Birthday TiLT
Coworkers Or more specifically, all the cute college student girls that have been working with me this summer. They have really made work so much better. Unfortunately, they are all going back to school soon.
Santogold I just heard her for the first time today and I really love it already! “Say Aha” is a fun song.
My iPhone I just keep loving it more and more.
Keeping a positive attitude Even after applying for jobs for a year now and only getting one (!) interview, I’m really trying to keep a positive attitude.
Planning trips I have a couple of trips in mind, although I’m not sure when I’m going to be able to take them.
wearing a new perfume (!!!), leaving work early, brownies at ten o’ clock at night, over-sized jackets, catching up with old friends, packing for an exciting trip, stuffed cloth fruitcakes, starting a new journal, writing in loopy cursive, affirmation notes, an email inbox full of love notes, the Mamma Mia! soundtrack (yes, again!), and a comfortably messy room…that I will soon clean up :)
I love TiLT soooo much… Funny, I just started doing it on my blog today, and I’m going to make all my students do it as soon as school starts in a few weeks!
my list:
Omiyage, Wagashi, and Matcha!! (gifts, sweets, and tea!)
My Bath (love love love)
FRIENDS (when is a week when we DON’T love our friends?)
Helpful people! (Even when you don’t speak the same languages, your actions say much much more!)
Learning (and growing)
Oh, TiLT. You are so wonderful (and of COURSE Gala, you rock for birthing TiLT. Do you feel maternal pride? It’s like TiLT just graduated school or something. Celebrate!)
I’ve only recently found this blog (thanks to my best friend Candi ::HUGE GLOMPING HUGGLES:: if she’s reading!) and this is my first post: seems to be an appropriately special occasion for it!
Things I love:
Tim Tams & Tea (I don’t care if it’s bad for me, I can’t stop and it makes me melt with bliss)
The smell of air just after it’s rained (which was just now!)
My degree & my subjects (so perfect for me! I did Life Drawing last night for the first time – amazing experience)
Uni students (I make so many connections with people I would otherwise never find; the friendships I’ve made in the past 7 months are amazing – love uni!)

good day!
It’s the first time i’m also putting the list on my blog! woohoo! i made a special poster, please do check it out, gala! sweetfancytreat.blogspot.com/2…
My list:
1.Atmosphere: I’m listening to their songs all day long, and I already know a great deal of the lyrics by heart. Too bad I couldn’t rap them myself though, haha. I like the stories in their songs. Really cool! My favourites are Puppets and Shoulda Know with the speakers turned to maximum.
2.Pink nailpolish: Is all the rage especially now since my skin is, uhmmm, two shades darker from the tan I got on vacation. It makes a nice contrast. The same effect with the cherry red hue.
3.My family, especially my mom and cat : Mom because she’s the absolute best. My cat because I didn’t realise that I missed him until we brought him back home. He’s meow-ing all the time and keeps trashing around my closet trying to find a place to sleep, but I love him.
4.Prim magazine: Because it’s beyond awesome. And because I’m in it.
5.Marilyn hair mask from Lush: It worked wonders on my hair, protecting it from excessive sunrays exposure. It is a great way to give your hair a nice & good nourishing treatment. Plus, it makes the color more intense.
6.Eating cocoa cake in front of the TV: It is just so GOOD!
7.Radiohead: You should really listen to their In Rainbows album. It’s fantastic! I love 15 steps, Nude and Weird Fishes Arpeggi.
8.Peaches: I don’t remember ever having something like a favourite fruit, but these days I realised if I had to name one, I’d choose the peach anytime.
9.Autumn jackets: I already bought two, but hey, why stop there? I just set foot in the city again, but spotted this great jacket I just had to get. I suppose you can’t have enough jackets, right?
10.Wearing grey and soft pink: It is one of my favourite color combo. Still, I won’t give up my purple addiction. Oh, and this ring I’m wearing all the time.
11.Photography (but of course) & going through photos from the vacation:)
1. Okkervil River
I cannot freakin’ wait until The Stand Ins comes out!
2. Sending Mix CD’s
To my best friends back home, in funny handcrafted packages with huge long letters.
3. Listening to New Music
With a family friend who is very knowledgeable, we spend hours sitting and listening and drinking tea.
4. My Charm Bracelet
Which has grown quite a bit lately, Means I’m doing heaps of new stuff!
5. New Friends
Never thought I was any good at making friends until I moved to a new city, now I have lots. I feel proud for pushing myself out of my comfort zone to meet new people, and charm them into hanging out with me.
Happy Birthday TiLT, can’t believe it’s been a whole year!
