Things I Love Thursday
[ 6 August 2009 ]
Amon Tobin; apple juice; slumber parties especially when they are more party than slumber; Entourage; new shoes; everyone at the Sex & The City casting looking so damn fly; big glowing Aquarian moons (did you see that yesterday?! The sky over Manhattan was blue all night!); “all unicorn vomit all the time”; soy gouda sandwiches with avocado & plum tomatoes; long hair anticipation (yessssssssss); girlfriend anticipation (Nadia Nubby Jazzi Sammy & Angel, & all before October!); planning a NubbyJazziGala adventure on the scale of our Disneyland exploits at the start of the year (tricky but we will manage!); Chicago (If You Leave Me Now & Baby, What A Big Surprise!!!); reading lots of articles about fascinating people & feeling totally inspired; taking the dog for a walk in my sleepwear; late night impromptu photoshoots with Chloe; Kings Of Leon (um, why did I not know how great they were before now?); Sextrology: The Astrology of Sex and the Sexes (I just got it the other day & some of it has made my jaw drop with its terrifying accuracy); my UPS guy who calls me “DAHHHHHHHHLING”...
Being a little too liberal with the silver glitter hairspray in my dimly-lit bedroom & emerging from my haus looking like a fairy orgy; long, strenuous vinyasa yoga classes taught by Swedish instructors with dulcet, mellifluous voices — & lavender eye-pillows to rest with at the end; catching the ferry across to New Jersey on a beautiful day (um, before the heavens opened, that is); lying in bed reading How To Be A Hepburn In A Hilton World; big piles of pillows; The Dish looking at my outfit & saying, “Are you on drugs?” & then being photographed in it by Elle magazine, hahaha!; coming up with new mantras with Nubby (like “LIZARD PEOPLE ARE SEXY”); Captain Eo!; learning new things (about Ducatis & Spanish pronounciation); running into friends on the street; the fact that my apartment is on an insane slope, & things will roll from one side of the floor to the other (sometimes I feel dizzy walking through the hallway); describing things as “epiglottal” — like if a beautiful sky made your breath catch in your throat, that could be epiglottal (you can partially blame Super Kawaii Mama for that one!); Grand High Witch obsession (favourite villain, I think, & what I wouldn’t give to be able to spit ink); super-stretchy yummy-sore yoga muscles; stashing treats in the fridge; air conditioning…
& my morning playlist: Big L – Put It On / Drake – Sooner Than Later / Ghostface – Back Like That (feat. Ne-Yo) / Solange – Sand Castle Disco (Machinedrum remix) / J Dilla – Won’t Do / Big L – Street Struck / The Hold Steady – First Night / Aesop Rock – Daylight / Atmosphere – C’mon / Brother Ali – Pedigree / Camp Lo – Luchini AKA This Is It / Living Legends – Watch Out / Soul Position – Keep It Hot For Daddy / Big L – Devil’s Son / Atmosphere – Hockey Hair / Blueprint – Big Girls Need Love Too / Al Green – I Can’t Get Next To You / Atmosphere – They Always Know / Atmosphere – Feel Good Hit Of The Summer 2 / Kenna – Static / Atmosphere – Party For The Fight To Write / Diddy Ft. Nicole Schererzinger – Come To Me (!!!) / Jane’s Addiction – Chip Away / Nine Inch Nails – Non-Entity / Nas – U.B.R. (Unauthorized Biography Of Rakim)

“Confine yourself to observing & you always miss the point of your own life. The object can be stated this way: Live the best life you can. Life is a game whose rules you learn if you leap into it & play it to the hilt. Otherwise, you are caught off balance, continually surprised by the shifting play. Non-players often whine & complain that luck always passes them by. They refuse to see that they can create some of their own luck.” — Frank Herbert (from Chapterhouse Dune)
Alright then, my beautifulest flower! Give me your list of things you love this week! The things can be as small or big as you like, from crunchy toast crumbs to sitting under a favourite tree or a new pot of marmalade. Yummify us with your adoration! Serve up delicious slices of your world!
Love letters & feather headdresses,

- Getting a great deal on this beautiful pink/magenta handbag, black ballet flats with the most adorable buckle, making wishlists
- Buying presents for my best friend, knowing she’ll LOVE it, handmade paper chains
- Stuff that’s fairtrade and still look awesome, realizing hom much great STUFF I already have, gorging myself on chocolate
- Having really cool parents that actually understand me, getting the best comment ever on my blog, writing blog posts, having great ideas
- Red lipstick and pale skin with my dark hair, looking sort of like a modern Snow White (way cooler than it sounds), the best black eyeshadow I have ever used, cosmetics kits that have everything you need for a complete look that are tiny
- Great days out on the town with my mum and 2 sisters, train rides, boats in the rain, looking up beautiful Autumn coats, wishlists, writing a style concept, losing weight just by walking
- Finding my self esteem, realizing that I actually am pretty good looking, hoping to inspire others, going to Oxford now, road trips with my family.
That was a long one!
from my journal: * Summer. i haven’t really appreciated it that much these past two months, been too worried and stressed, but i’m getting to appreciate the relative warmth, the sunshine and the greenness.
* Sissi the Cat. even though she wakes me up at 4am nearly every morning and is a bit of an attention whore to the point of being annoying, she’s still sweet and cute and keeps me company.
* Kaisa. she’s one of those people who, once she’s on certain terms with you, lets you be and doesn’t pester you, doesn’t judge you. she’s so easy to just be with and talk to and its such a relief.
* Books. i’ve been going to the library, not only to work, but also to just ogle at the books and loan a great deal. i also salivate after books in stores where ever i go, and on book mooch. and i’m constantly reading when i’m not working or trying to actually live a little. i’m so glad i’ve come to appreciate reading and liking it, because until i was about 15 or so, i had pretty much zero interest in reading.
* That Moment, when you meditate or just sit calmly somewhere and you feel peaceful and completely alright.
* Thrifting. on my walk around town yesterday, i popped into Frida Lähetystori (Missionary Market), which is basically the same as the Salvation Army. i found a pair of jeans, a blue catholic school girl type skirt and a white with black stripes button up blouse, for 7 euros all together.
* Music. it really is pretty awesome, huh?
Fairy Orgy = amazing!! Especially on pink hair.

weee – here’s my list: www.jesslyons.com/?p=1060
I’m tempted to add ‘Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon, but it’s really goes against my grain to like something that everyone else and there mom likes. Perhaps it will make next weeks ;P

Home Improvement. My place is getting a total makeover and I’m loving it.
School Anticipation. Only about 10 days left to prepare. I’m so excited to get into an art class again!

Aw, he loves it! – Butter tarts – Successfully finishing up my museum exhibit. – Getting my old laptop to work, and then delighting in having two working laptops on my desk. Two computers! At the same time!
** Having lunch with a friend that I live with, but don’t really hang out with as often as I’d like. There’s SUCH a difference between happening to watch TV together because you live in the same house, and actually MAKING PLANS and CONSCIOUSLY CHOOSING to hang out.
** Hearing from a record company executive right away when I emailed about music rights for a song by a semi-big band! I want this particular band’s song for use as the theme song for the web series I’m writing/producing…and I think there’s actually a good chance of me getting the rights! It’s amazing what you can get if you just ASK.
** Being woken up by a pug dog snorting in my face. :) I’m dog-sitting for a friend, and the dog mustmustMUST sleep in the bed. This morning, the adorable pug woke me up by sitting on my chest and snorting into my eyeball. Sounds annoying, but it was really quite cute.

Feeling inspired to write all the time
Ooohh no, Chicago! Hahahaha! Way to own your retro music preferences! Thanks for that, totally made my morning.
Here’s my list:
Saying ‘awesome’ all the time. ALL the time. Instead of ‘good’, ‘cool’, ‘OK’, etc . .
Midnight Youth
Pine pollen – it’s EVERYWHERE and it looks kinda sulphuric and weird.
Crossing patrol – getting lots of waves and smiles and flirtatious comments from all the drivers (yeah, I was wearing a fairly short skirt).
The Discovey of France by Graham Robb – SO interesting!!
Years ago I was at loggerheads with someone. We are friends now. I knew this would happen, but it’s still funny.
It’s my precious youngest-born potiki’s 7th today. After school we are totally going to play a few games of Star Wars Guess Who.
Labour part 3 on dooce.com. It’s beautiful and funny and entertaining, but reading it I cried uncontrollably. Incredibly similar to my own childbirth experiences.
Reading ridiculous Black Metal history
Raspberry lime rickeys
The Dark Tower series by Stephen King
Low key birthday plans with friends
Air conditioning
Nag Champa
Neil Gaiman
Sea of Glass by Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab

Running into friends who weren’t friends until you ran into them. But that was just Wednesday…
Discovering that my natural color palette actually goes with brown, making outfits much easier to put together.
Drawing up a budget and lists of areas I want to focus my time on for the rest of summer and for the fall. Mmm, delicieux. Even better that I have to break bad habits and face ugly truths to accomplish these things!
Squinting at code. I end up being able to download all these fabulous media files that I don’t think the owners would want me to download. Monetarily free, an educational use of my time, and a much better gift to myself than a pair of shoes.
Similarly, properly credited images/words/etc. It’s only fair, since they get put online for public perusal, right?
Protein. It helps focus, who knew?!
Andrew Bird’s string composition.

The fact that in New Zealand it’s already Friday!
(although would much prefer to live in NY)
:P
My mind is somehow totally blitzed today and my short term memory is shot so I’m going to describe what happened today that has made me smile.
I saw the film ‘Coco Avant Chanel’ and it was really an exceptional film. I just loved it. Audrey Tatou is sublime. I’d watch it again now if I could.
On a related note I realised I’d never smelt Chanel No5 and decided to rectify the situation after the film by going to Selfridges for a sniff. I sprayed some on a wand and realised that I’d been smelling it my whole life: my Grandmother has always worn Chanel No5!
Other happinesses: finding the right outfit for a night out on my first try. Finding a strand of pearls amongst my tangle of necklaces (totally channeling Coco tonight!). The incredible bright pink and peach sky outside right now (sunsets, ahhh….), embracing the awful club we’re going to as an experience and focusing on the company being the important thing and finally, bright pink lipstick!!
All this good stuff in one day :)

Ah! Amon Tobin!
I just grabbed another excellent mix of his last week, of Foley Room recorded live. It’s brilliant.

<p>
As for good things this week, well, it’s been rough, but:
- I’m totally proud of myself for learning how to stand up for myself and I’m getting ready to end a relationship that has been under false pretenses. Even though I’m still in love and it’s hard as all hell.
- Honestly learning to believe that I deserve the best, and not accepting any less.
- Nonstop working on my illustration portfolio, it’s satisfying to be so productive.
- Spending time with my cosmic-twin who I haven’t seen in over a year and learning our lives are still parallel.
- $10 neon purple pants.
- Getting a new hoop. + Also spinning fire this weekend with friends, which I haven’t done in months.
I just learned how to wear makeup without looking like I’m drunk and high. It only took me seven years. I am so happy, I can’t stop smiling and laughing. I don’t look like a total mess in makeup, for the first time! I have you to thank, Gala. I read your eyeliner instructions under one of your more recent flickr pictures, and they are completely spot on. Thank you!!
Also: hanging out with laptop in the kitchen to type to the sound of rain falling; anticipation of receiving an order in the mail; ladies at Rite Aid who give discounts on your purchases for no apparent reason other than that they’re really nice people; free loot for my grandmother and myself; gifts that come with a purchase, that happen to be something that you were looking for; coconut essential oil (it smells so delicious, it’s a shame it isn’t edible); unusually soft and shiny hair (compared to how it is most of the time); starting to like things about your body; being surrounded by bursts of color and feeling happy; jumping around wildly to “Recharge” by the Fugees; delicious blueberries.
I love:
Exciting concert prospects for the fall (Flogging Molly plus Gallows in THE SAME SHOW? Yes please!).
Shopping with my mommy and finding cheap shoes and a cheap hat and a cheap vintage plaid shirt and a cheap cardigan with a moustache man on it and a dress that I shouldn’t have bought cause I’m broke but I did and I love it.
Seeing well-dressed, attractive men everywhere I went today.
500 Days of Summer. Most darling movie I’ve seen in a loooong while.
Having the chillest days at work lately, with the chillest (and cutest!) people.
Slowwwwwwwly evolving my wardrobe from jeans and t-shirts x 2547305 to something with more excitement and variety.
My hair. I barely have to touch it lately and it goes perfectly how I want it. Sick.
Rereading Harry Potter #7 and crying my eyes out at the appropriate parts.
Spending the weekend in a creepy old house built in 1837.
My fat old cat who makes pigeon noises when he’s happy.
my sparkly watch ~ dinner and the theatre tonight with my siblings ~ making guacamole ~ realising I truly love fruit and vegies the best ~ olive leaf extract ~ new glasses ~ attending 2 plays, an opera and a film festival in a week ~ culling and streamlining ~ inspiration super saturation ~ making adult decisions
Seeing the Decemberists live (probably the best concert I’ve ever been to) from the 3rd row – Buying tshirts and CDs at concerts – ordering movies from my childhood (Homeward Bound will be arriving any day now) – Getting the opportunity to go to Ireland with my favorite band in May – seeing The Brothers Bloom with my Boy – Having the Boy admit that he actually LIKED The Brothers Bloom – The Boy coming back from Chicago without any new piercings – Having time off from work – Having the opportunity to be an extra in a short film directed by someone I admire – Seeing Joseph Gordon-Levitt make a cameo as a drunk guy in a bar (my favorite living actor) – Listening to fabulous music – Having lunch with an old friend – Finally being done with dental work for a while – The Boy’s new Audi TT – Moving day approaching – Looking at kittens online and plotting to buy one as soon as we move – Having my best friend come to me for help when times get hard, even if she’s been pushing me away lately – Using hot cocoa to help mend a broken heart – Finding treasures in a used book store (the “Ninotchka” screenplay!) – Having everything fall perfectly into place after a truly horrible week <3
I was listening to Amon Tobin all Thursday night, he is the goods.
‘Permutation’ and ‘Supermodified’ while writing and looking out at the super charged full moon we had here last night.

Playing Rummy late into the night – raspberries with sugar and milk – deliciously sugary Canadian candy in bulk – cropped tees – cousins I haven’t seen in eight years – British Columbia dry heat – raspberry cheesecake ice cream – body chains – slashing my own t-shirt – jumping in the lake – wearing a bikini with confidence – really old wedding photos – hugging my boyfriend – smiling – screaming – long walks in high heels – birthday boots – pink flowers – waking up to the sun instead of an alarm – short hair – giving my chinchillas a bath – blogging – dreaming of happiness.
only one this week:
that this is the last thursday i will be spending in atlanta, because next wednesday i move to college and begin my new adventure!!!!!!!!
Tickle-fights in a full car, drawing amazing tattoos on people with felt tip pen, a red bull a day…, getting blusher that looks fabulous, listening to scarlett johansson late at night, getting giggle-fits at inapproproate times, day dreaming, pre-performance butterflies but not stage fright, coco avant chanel, viva magazine, flirting with other people on stage, being told I look like a young Debbie Harry, dancing instead of homework, being on a cliff at dusks watching fur seals and sea gulls below, the effects of codeine on a sore leg, getting called “cutie” by the one I admire, creating positive energy.
oh, and thinking “what would peewee herman do?” hahah ;D
xo
Waking up laughing! – i was in hysterics over something a friend said in a dream i was having, which forced me to wake up – still laughing. was a wonderful way to start my day!
Ghd hair straightners! – just brought one after my last one broke years ago, forgotten what a difference super straight hair looks on me – given me a new look and a little boost of confidence!
Trying to keep surprise birthday plans a secret from the birthday girl!
honourable mentions:
fights with a guy friend that cant last more then one minute, stealing my dads socks, doodling with sharpies, watching kids tv shows instead of starting a uni assignment, kit kats for breakfast, russian red lipstick from mac! 1950’s fashion, being able to adore the love other couples have for each other without jealousy while being genuinely happy single in the prime of my life, having a tidy room for a whole week now!
