Totally Addicted To Leggings
[ 20 March 2007 ]
I have a confession to make. On Saturday, I had to go out & buy black leggings for my Witch Baby costume. I haven’t owned a pair for a long time: before I went to the States in August last year, I threw my last couple of pairs away because they were pretty much thrashed.
Okay, well, since Saturday… I haven’t worn anything else. It is now Tuesday. Stop me before I kill wear them again!
What are you guilty of over-wearing? Please tell me I’m not the only one!

GUILTY
I love legging. I have been wearing them for months on end . i have 4 black, some red, green, purple, fishnet and who knows what else. They are just sooo easy to wear. Now that the weather is dropping I am having trouble finding an alternative. I have become so comfortable with the tight legged look that I had to go out and buy some skinny white jeans and some skinny black jeans for warmth. I need to be stopped!
(but I don’t know if I want to)
It’s funny, when I re-bought them I had forgotten how much I used to wear them! I used to wear them with EVERYTHING! They’re evil.
I also saw some black ones with sparkly silver… STUFF on them. I want them. I’m telling myself they will go with my “futuristic” winter wardrobe.
ADDICTED TO SKIRTS
I heart skirts! I thought I’d wear a pair of trousers yesterday only to rip them off and put on a skirt… again. This is becoming regular behaviour. I don’t remember the last time I wore trousers…
I wear my jeans too much. I’m an art student, so I try not to wear anything (on studio days) that I really love. I try to mix it up with different tops, but I often fall back on the whole “jeans, t-shirt, sweater (jumper? Do you guys call them jumpers down under?)” combination. Hopefully when summer comes I’ll be able to wear cuter outfits.
Dee Dee — I don’t wear trousers very often either. It’s historically proven quite tough to find any that actually flatter my body shape. I love pyjama pants though!
Courtney — Yeah, jumpers or sweaters. Most people would call it a jumper, but I know that’s confusing to Americans, so I usually say sweater to avoid some kind of FASHION MISCOMMUNCIATION TRAGEDY! Hee! It must be hard getting dressed knowing that it could be the last time something can be worn. Like style armageddon. Are paint splatters your main problem? You could try putting a dress over jeans instead, or wearing thick stockings with a skirt & a long sweater. Really though, in a situation like that it seems best to go with a ‘safe’ option. Just get really super glam on non-studio days to compensate!
I have an addictive personality with things (cds, clothes, makeup etc…). At the moment I am loving my skinny jeans so much! I have only been able to wear them and feel good in them for the last 6 months so they are still a new fad for me! I LOVE them and I say wear things till you want to wear them no more!! Huzzah for being addicted to leggings Gala!!
oh and a quick Q: I have to dress semi-corporate for work so have to tear myself away from said skinny jeans each morning :( any alternative suggestions? ooo maybe I should try leggings?...
...I would usually refer to trousers as pants but opted for the former in order to avoid a FASHION MISCOMMUNCIATION TRAGEDY with any British visitors to this site. I once inadvertently told a pub full of my new English colleagues that I was off to shop for some underpants. Eep!
dee dee ~ my sister was living in england & wasn’t aware that they call underwear ‘pants’ either… so after riding the horses one day & getting mud on her jeans, she said to her flatmate, “my pants are dirty, can i borrow some of yours?”
hee hee hee.
HEAD BANDS.
quite possibly there is nothing i love more than wearing headbands. they go with everything you can mix-and-match, you can accent, you can stand out, you can dress up, you can dress down. pretty much (along with over-sized sun glasses and scarves) they are the most versatile accessory that the good lord ever provided.
such is love.
love
perhaps funnier is that you bought them from supre. I have spent my entire teenaged life trying to avoid that store, I am fairly certain its sales assistants carry the plague. TERRIFYING.
last boxing day on a whim I bought a dress, a beautiful magenta dress that reached almost my ankles, pieced together from bits of vintage saris. lovely, and not in a gross hippy way. bought fair trade it cost me a miniature fortune. AND IT GAVE ME CLEAVAGE. no small miracle. but I wore it so much (over new year’s, my subsequent vacation and up til mid-February) that the (rather poorly) hemmed edges of the sari pieces frayed, being as they were mostly cheap rayon, and the whole thing literally fell to pieces.
:(
I have a dress that I recently bought that I suspect I will end up being guilty of overwearing. It’s short-sleeved, empire-line, crossover-neckline, just under-the-knee length with a full-ish skirt, and it’s so comfortable and flattering – it’s made of light T-shirt-type material, so it doesn’t even require ironing. With sandals or ballet flats during the day, high-heeled mary-janes in the evening, and I can see myself teaming it with a thin merino turtle-neck, opaque tights and knee-high boots when the weather gets colder. Yep, this is going to be a ‘wear to death’ piece of clothing
Emiliana — Supre is totally evil! I used to work just down the road from one, & I would get so bored that I’d go in there on my lunchbreak & snap up cheap stuff. What a waste of time. The only thing I’ve ever bought from there which stood the test of time were the leggings (I mean, sure, they fell apart eventually, but they were pretty good for the price). I went back to Supre because a) they were only $15 !!! & b) I saw some in Sportsgirl which, when I put my hand under the top layer to stretch the fabric, went kind of see-through. Aieeee. Worst possible thing = see-through leggings! I knew I could trust awful old Supre, haha!
Shame about your dress! I had the same thing happen to a beautiful blue silk dress which was made in India. It is an absolute wreck, no longer useful. Oh my god! It would make a great scarf. Lightbulb moment!
I wear new things to pieces. I bought a delicious purple top (knit! with princess sleeves and little buttons!) 5 days ago and I’ve worn it 3/5 of those days.
Other than that it’s my alex&chloe necklaces which I adore.
Ah, Gala those things with your witch baby outfit look like ‘footless tights’. Aren’t they a no no? I see soo many girls wearing them under super-short skirts/dress with massive heels.
ps: You looked so cute, your god damn photogenic.
Sarah-Rose — I love their “Coco is Dead” necklace. Which ones do you have?
x Sarah x — Define “no-no”! I think you can wear anything, as long as you pull it off with panache… & thanks!
I have two of their “Coco is Dead” necklaces – “Knife Fight” and “Buried Alive” – and I have a Talon necklace somewheresomewheresomewhere on the way to me.
I admit I too wear the footless variety but I try to do so with imagination. Zig zag design tights with starry skirt and bright red shoes and so on. I guess I have been subtley lusting after footless tights all my life – since primary school I have loathed the feeling of bunched up stockings in my shoes blah!
Hee hee annaloren – I’d love to have seen the look on the flatmate’s face!
I over-wear knee socks! I wear them ALL the time! Heh.
I’m addicted to skinny jeans and just about anything else that’s tightly fitted bottoms wise!!! That, and shoes that are fairly shiny and bags! Oh, and T-shirts too!!!
i have 3 pairs of the SAME exact pair of jeans (only in 3 different sizes). Lucky Brand “short and sweet” are the only ones i’ve found that look good on my short and sweet body…hehe.
i wear one pair (the size that fits me best at the moment) every single weekend! haha.
as for over-wearing things during the week….well i work in an office that requires a “corporate wardrobe”. i have about 5 suits, and i wear them OVER AND OVER AND OVER again. i just can’t bring myself to spend any more money on more suits because i don’t plan on staying there after my year long “sentence” is up.
i cannot wait to work somewhere else that allows for more freedom of expression (without having to spend upwards of $600 per outfit)!!
or hell, at this point i would take a uniform, at least that way i’m expected to wear the same thing daily. lol
Oh Gala, whenever i buy something NEW i end up wearing it out…
current favourites:
-trashy sexy red gingham dress
-large orange sunglasses (i love wearing them outside when its foggy – i say it makes everything look like a creamsicle)
-all my new socks from sockdreams.com
-red beret
I am also guilty of the legging obsession. I have a black pair with a skull and crossbone print, they make me so happy that I just love to wear them. I pair them with a pirate t-shirt and I am the pirate yoga girl :-)
The one thing I could never live without however is jeans. I have nice ones to wear with a blazer to look smart, and scruffy ones for, well, being scruffy, and many other inbetween pairs. They are so comfortable and I love how I look in jeans!
Oh Sarah-Rose I had to google Alex & Chloe as the necklaces sound so intriguing!! eeek I am so glad I did! Wow they are fab! I love the Kate Moss one and so many more… What is the price exchange like? I am in NZ…
Oh and I am also addicted to heart necklaces!!
Opium — I used to be too! I have a huge drawer full of striped socks in every colour of the rainbow as evidence!
Mary Bee — The beret looks fantastic on you, I definitely advocate thrashing it!
Emma – I’m in New Zealand as well. It took me 18 months of adoring the “Coco is Dead – Knife Fight” to justify the cost. And I totally don’t regret it at all. It was about .75 US to NZ when I ordered it.
Thanks :)
I guess that is actually pretty good considering some other jewellery prices out there!
I might just have to dream about them for a bit!
Lately,
Black cashmere jumper
Black skintight jeans worn till they are velveteen.
Black Italian-made dress shoes
(Highlighter blue jock strap type undies!)
&
Tight black singlets with dress pants & pointy shoes.
&
Gym gear in public-wet togs in public.
waaaa I wish I had never read this. I went out shopping today and somehow I ended up with two pairs of leggings, grey and black. They are SO comfortable though! How did this happen?!
SKINNY JEANS.
I’m absolutely addicted. Why are they so comfy and awesome? The only thing that bothers me is that you can’t sit down without hitching them up – butt cleavage was never okay. Also …
SHOES.
I never knew how addictive they could be. I loooove ballet flats and I bought my first pair of Chuck Taylors the other day (pink too). Aww.
For some reason i read this title as ‘addicted to legwarmers’ :P
Opaque black tights are one of my favourite wardrobe items ever.
Leggings are very comfy for lounging around the house, it pretty much feels like you aren’t wearing pants coz they are just a second skin and move with your body. Excellent.
