Wardrobe Taming -- Day Six

Wardrobe taming series:
Day One
Day Two
Day Three
Day Four
Day Five
Day Six
Day Seven
Day Eight
This week has been all about going through your wardrobe with a fine-toothed comb, working out what you can wear & what doesn’t do it for you.
Today I’d like you to investigate your shopping habits. As you’ve been going through all this stuff you own, you might have noticed patterns cropping up. Maybe, for example, you own way more skirts than t-shirts. Maybe you have hundreds of coats but only a couple of jerseys or cardigans. Do you have a penchant for buying expensive high heels & then never wearing them? Do you always buy a certain colour or style? Are you stuck in a rut? Do you always go for stripes or florals? Do you suddenly become a trend-crazed fiend as soon as you get your hands on a copy of Vogue? Has spending outside your range left you with a whole lot of Chanel & nowhere to wear it? Do you look at your closet & realise that you were “talked into” buying half of your clothing?
I’d like you to have a think about this & work out whether your habits are helping or hindering you. Seriously, do you need ten striped t-shirts or is it time to branch out? Is being “on trend” really that important (or stylish, or reflective of you as a person)?
Whip out that ever-useful clothing journal of yours & jot down some notes about what patterns you have & what you’d like to do about them. Then meet me back here tomorrow for some ideas on closet organisation & further wardrobe refinement!
Super-love & cupcakes,

Cleaning Out Your Wardrobe

I have to admit that my shopping habits have been haphazard at times. My problem is I would buy stuff I think I will wear without really evaluating it, and without trying it on. That is why, as I was cleaning out my closet, I found items I want to get rid of with tags still on them. What a waste! Luckily they were not expensive, but still!
I’m trying to plan better and create a palatte of colors and styles that I know I look good in, especially since most of my money goes to shoes and not clothes.
I also wish we had better thrift opportunities where I am. I do better on eBay, but then I get sucked in and go crazy!
I guess moderation is more of what I need to work on.

I have a lot of issues with getting the right fit in clothing, so I tend to buy what’s easiest.
For instance, I tend to go clothes shopping and end up with accessories like shoes, bags, hats, and jewelry.
I also tend to avoid pant shopping because finding stuff that fits (especially that is long enough) is next to impossible. I can’t say impossible because I finally went jean shopping for the first time this year and did find three pairs, but it took forever and was quite a workout. Instead, I normally choose dresses or skirts.
Blouses are also a problem. Even post reduction, I have rather large breasts, plus I get this weird bulge in most blouses right at my lower back. For some reason, I seem to be having better luck finding jackets. For someone who lives in Florida, my jacket to shirt ratio is pretty screwy.
Poochie — I used to be one of those people who just NEEDED to spend money, so I would end up buying things I didn’t even really like or try on or anything. Very indiscriminate shopper. That’s changed though, & I think I have my emotions under control now, which means I don’t have flights of oh-my-god-must-spend-everything-I’ve-got. It helps! I think Ebay can be really dangerous because you never really know how those items are going to look on you until you’ve forked over the money. Plus, a good Ebay shop with a cute, well-styled model is much more enticing than something on a rack, so you’re inclined to spend more or imagine yourself as ‘someone else’ as you click the BID NOW!! button. But yeah, take your time with shopping & have a plan! You’ll feel much better about it ;>
amber — I will try to do you proud!
Meg — Hmmm, yeah, it sounds like you get frustrated & kind of give up halfway through your shopping mission. I think if you made a list of things that you need & stuck to that, you’d be much more satisfied with your wardrobe. Of course, trying to find a good white shirt or a pair of jeans can be a total nightmare, but it is definitely worth perservering. After all, you can only wear a jacket for so many days of the year!
I am guilty of having a wardrobe full of beautiful clothes with nowhere to wear them! I spend far too much money on buying clothes and never have enough left to go out and enjoy them. I’m trying to change my spending habits but it’s not easy. xx
Gala, it’s not my wardrobe so much that’s the problem. I’ve just put on so much weight that I can’t fit into my clothes.
And I hate buying bigger sizes. Do you have any suggestions on what to do until I can starve myself into them again?
Catherine
Helen — Ahh, that’s a tricky one. A few fiscal limits & a bit of imagination will set you right. I think it’s important not to feel like a ‘special’ dress must only be worn on a ‘special’ day… I mean, you can wear anything anytime! & why not?!
Catherine — No! Starvation is not the answer. It is never the answer. It is a landslide to Sad Town! I was actually thinking about writing a piece on size vanity & you have totally convinced me to do it. Stay tuned, & keep munching! xx
Could you make a separate post with all your wardrobe tips or type it up in a Word doc. so I could look back at it and access it? I would love to this and I think I would be a lot happier with my wardrobe!!!
ChicandStylish — I’ll see what I can do, but you could always copy/paste the appropriate passages into a word document yourself!
Hi Gala – I was joking about the starvation, but I do need to cut down. I put on weight gradually when I was under a lot of stress and started drinking heaps of wine. I was underweight when I started doing it, so I didn’t really care at first.
But the problem is I need to lose about 20 pounds. My clothes are too tight to say the least. It would be great if you could do a post on good things to wear that will fit now and when I get back to normal and still look good – if there are such things.. Thank you.
Hi Gala! I love your Wardrobe Taming entries! Thanks for the links to all of them.
Hi!
Love these posts!
I’d just like to add that if you ever find yourself with a bunch of clothes that you don’t want for whatever reason there are some good websites where you can swap the things for things you DO like.
