What Do You Spend Money On?
[ 2 February 2007 ]
Everyone has different priorities when it comes to spending money. Some people spend up on almost everything, while others will pay as little as they can as often as they can.
Do you buy designer handbags & eat noodles for dinner?
Do you spend up on skincare but use cheap cosmetics?
Where do you draw the line?
I think it’s very important to spend money on things that will last, like shoes & coats. If you buy well the first time, it will save you money in the long run. I also think it’s crucial to look after your skin. If the only way my skin looked good was by buying La Mer products, then you better believe I’d spend the money — but thankfully, I survive on a combination of Lush Cosmetics (super-cheap) & M.A.C. skincare. (I switch on & off, it’s good to vary your skincare routine.)
However, I like to go cheap on most of my underwear — the cheap stuff tends to be much cuter! I also like to buy undershirts from the children’s departments of major stores, which is very inexpensive. While I have expensive taste in makeup, I like to save on it by buying it off Ebay (after trying it instore first). I’ve also never been very interested in expensive bags: I prefer to buy several at a cheaper price, that way I have more options.
How do you prioritise?
Super-love & cupcakes,

i like to spend money i dont have and have lots of everything.
recently i have fallen in love with m.a.c’s colour pigments. i use it for eyeshadow because it still looks awesome at the end of the day.
i have found the best way to buy it is in little tester pots off trademe/ebay. some kind sole will sell you a 1/4 teaspoon in a little jar for like $5 and it lasts forever and you can buy like 100’s of colours.
the bonus is if you dont like it or use it you havent wasted heaps of money.
I wish Lush was more in my price range – I oogle their website way too often! Time to change my budgeting strategies, I suppose…
I tend to do the same.
I love M.A.C. so whenever I have some money, I spend it at the MAC counter. However, I only buy the things I know I would wear.
As for clothing, I like Children’s stuff…or clothes that are on clearance ($2.00? YES!). I also rummage through bags of clothing that I wore in elementary school and pair those with clothes that I have made.
Everything else, I make :].
Interesting subject. You don’t actually need to spend a lot on skincare… good food, exercise and basic products used daily should suffice!
Sarah — Good call. I’ve seen the testers but have never bought any. I guess I’m just a fool for packaging, I really like to own a complete product. I’m weird like that! It’s a good idea though, I should try it…
Robin — What do you define as a “basic product”? Moisturiser + toner + cleanser? That’s pretty much all I use, with the exception of an occasional mask if I feel like a really deep cleanse.
i’m another makeup aficionado – mac cosmetics are my main vice, but urban decay gets a lot of my money too. i tend to buy a lot of them off ebay too – i’ve got some great bargains on urban decay eyeshadows by just buying refills in plastic packaging instead of the metal tins!
xo
Hey Gala,
Personally I invested in a very inexpensive exfoliator glove, designed for all over body use and face. It will never run out like products in bottles and you can be sure of a good all over service from the thing!!! If you incorporate a really good diet and exfoliate every other day or indeed daily, you only really need an inexpensive moisturiser with an SPF of 15. I spend about £30 a year on my skincare and get comments all the time asking me what my secret is!!! I spend my money on other things like clothes instead!!!
Dishes… dishes… dishes…
from a straight males perspective: girls are allowed to wear cheap ass shit as long as their shoes are expensive.
I spend tons on jeans and shoes because i’m a hard to fit type and the higher end brands spare me trying on agony.
I tend to use inexpensive hair care products and i have millions of cute little cheapie t shirts.
Hmmmmmm great question!
I spend allot on skincare and the odd Elemis facial/massage.I also spend a bit on good foods like good organic fruit & veggies or juices.
I am a sucker for bags but this bag obsession i have curbed as i have grown older & now i like to invest in a good coat or pair of shoes that are classic and will last me a while.
Geez you guys make me think I’m super cheap on cosmetics and well, basically everything!
Since I don’t wear makeup I guess I’m good in that department, but sometimes I do wear the occasional eye makeup and I love lipgloss.
Being Vegan however, I only wear either Smashbox, Hard candy, Mary Kay, and Wet N’ Wild (super cheap but good quality)
eBay. Lately, DVD’s & a pair of lolita sunglasses. Then hair dye, and buckets of bleach. and hair extensions. and shoes, I’m hoping i get lots of $$$ for my birthday so I can buy 4 pairs of Patricia Field heels in pink, blue, yellow & silver!
The only person who doesn’t scold me for my excessive shoe & ebay habit is my mother, god bless her!
I don’t spend money on bags either, I’m pretty heavy handed with them so they need to be machine washable and also if I like them I tend to use them all the time and get a colour that goes with everything – I spend a reasonable amount of money on anti aging, I’m a firm believer in prevention being better than cure and have mounted an attack on each line as it appears! Looking at my credit card bills I spend most of my money on holidays Xxx
Since I don’t have lots to spend, I usually forgo lots of trendy things in favor of “that perfect piece” that I can imagine wearing for the next 10 years. I’m super-picky about jeans and I’m starting to spend more on shoes; otherwise I feel like my legs were hit by a train at the end of the day. I really admire the folks who can take just a few good items and combine them to make 100 different looks. I’m still learning how to do that ;-)
I also make sure I have the most natural skincare I can afford. But it’s a good idea to eat well and drink water so you have that good “base glow” to work with. Then you don’t need so many products to correct things.
I’m currently in the market for a cute faux-fur to throw on before winter kicks up.
I waste money on junk food on my breaks at work lol. Theres no readymade sammies available n at 2am in the mornin i dont feel like making a pre made lunch..wump weow.
Other than that I spend money on clothes and petrol.
Would loooooooooove to try M.A.C face make up, especially the concealer. But the most I can afford is revlon/maybelline/l’oreal.
Has anybody tried napoleon perdis cosmetics ? I love the packaging lol.
Peace out ! xx
i like spending money on shoes(only good quality), food, pens, chairs, food, earrings, food, food . . . umm, food?
my first priority is bills (car insurance, mobile phone, ambulance cover etc.)
im a pretty good saver so i’ve been able to pay off my car, and my hecs (university) debt, so that is a huge relief.
now the fun things:
MAC cosmetics is my new addiction.. i have only just discovered how much better it is that the cheap stuff, definately worth it for the quality. once you go MAC you never go back! ;)
i am also about to spend $160 on an amazing pair of heels, at a cute little hidden away store in little bourke street, the guy makes them himself and didn’t have my size and so is going to make them for me! special!
i am also about to buy an expensive dress from wheels and dollbaby, which i see as a worthy investment.
im a blondie, so i always go to a hairdresser rather than diy for colour upkeep.
im a fan of the reject shop, you can pick up some handy things if you keep an eye out. eg. i purchased a pack of 4 nail files for $1, when a more expensive store would sell exactly the same but charge $5 for only 1.
i dont understand the whole ‘designer bag’ trend. to me a bag is a bag and i own a few cute simple (cheap) bags from little asian stores in chinatown. and they have all the little accessories for you to jazz it up yourself!
i try to save money on cds by just borrowing from friends and storing on my computer. but when it comes to dvds i prefer having the original because it feels like i have a proper collection, rather than burnt discs.
i try not to purchase full price accessories unless its something i desperately want. if there are any aussie girls into dangerfield stuff, i definately recommend the outlet store on brunswick st, fitzroy. i seriously spent at least 2 hours last time i went there. picked up some wonderful discounted clothes, but more importantly accessories for $1 or $2~! things that normally cost about $15.
...as you can tell shopping is my favourite hobby ;)
