Things I Love Thursday
Here’s a list of things I am in love with this week — & it’s pretty travel-focussed, because I just (as in, a few hours ago) touched down in New Zealand!
What Should I Wear?
People often email me saying, “I’m (insert age) & (insert size), what should I wear?”
I Want To Be... A Dominatrix!
“I got into the sex industry around 18 through a perfect formation of the Great Upper-Middle Class White Girl Sex Worker Trifecta: Morbid curiosity, interest in sexuality, and “I can make HOW MUCH money!?”“

Things I Love Thursday
Missouri, the City Museum, New York, New Zealand… !
Style Tips -- 11th November 2008
Take a photo of yourself looking really, really happy. Bonus points: link to it in the comments! (The comments on this article are awesome!)
I Want To Be... A Magazine Founder & Editor!
What is Coilhouse? It’s a love letter to alternative culture, in a time when alternative culture no longer exists. It’s the squirming, excitable brainchild of three amazing women: Meredith Yayanos, Nadya Lev & Zoetica Ebb. All three serve as editors, & all three bring their own unique experience & charms to the table.

What do you want to achieve before the end of the year? You have 55 days to make something amazing happen!

“I do TiLT with my students every Thursday and they love it. Here are a few responses that I will share…”
Things I Love Thursday
MK&A, Hallowe’en, Forgetting Sarah Marshall & PUMPKIN PIE! (So good!)
OhMiBod!
The OhMiBod isn’t a very attractive looking object — it looks more like the end of an elf’s pointy pink shoe than anything you might want near your underpants. But I promise you, once you attach this unusual gizmo to your iPod, stereo or even laptop, you will forgive it its cosmetic misgivings.
Last Night In New York City
I made a video of last night’s election excitement in New York City! It had to be seen to be believed.
Daily Outfit -- 4th November 2008
Yes, I am totally dressed up to celebrate. Tonight I am going to watch the elections on television with my friend & drink champagne. & then I am going out dancing!
Bookworms Are Sexy
Let’s talk about BOOKS! What have you read recently that you would recommend? What are you clamouring to get your hands on? What’s your favourite book of all time?
I Am Exhilarated & Terrified At The Same Time
Okay, America… Make us proud.
I Cheated On My Lover. Now What?
Let’s say you’re in a committed relationship, & have been for a while. 6 months have passed, maybe a year. Something happened — you met someone else, & you got involved. Now what? Should you come clean?

How To Beat Writer's Block
The most common piece of advice for anyone suffering writer’s block is “just write”. Of course, this is an excellent suggestion, because what you need is to get your flair back. So “just write” is all very well & good, but sometimes we need more prompting, more pushing, something bolder. How can you “just write” when you feel bored, frustrated & uninspired? Here are my suggestions for getting the better of the thing all writers dread.

Things I Love Thursday
It’s pretty Paris-centric this week, I’m afraid…
Question: What Would You Be Like If You Were The Opposite Sex?
If I was a boy, I would have jet black hair. I’d have way more tattoos than I do — probably two full sleeves, something on my neck & words across my knuckles. I’d be a writer (it attracts the ladies, haha!) & I’d definitely have a blog. How about you?
Daily Outfit -- 4th October 2008
This is me outside the Centre Pompidou on Saturday afternoon. Just after taking these photos, we went shopping along the Champs-Élysées, took photos during the sunset in front of the Arc de Triomphe, drank espresso beneath the Eiffel Tower as the light show glimmered above us & rode a fabulous, two-storey carousel!
Blog World Expo 2008
Before we left Las Vegas, Nubby & I were already discussing coming back for BWE09, which happens in October. We had such a fantastic time & are intending on making it into an annual pilgrimage!

Things I Love Thursday (Um, Friday?!)
A day late, because I just flew into Paris! (& boy, are my arms tired!) That was such a Dad joke. I’m sorry.
Floria Sigismondi
Floria is one of my favourite artists. She started off as a painter & illustrator, saying that she was transfixed by paintbrushes from an early age, but soon moved onto photography & music video direction.
Expiration Dating
“I’ve recently met a German foreign exchange student, and we really connect. I like him, but I’m afraid of getting involved since he’s going back to Germany in June, which means I’ll probably never see him again. Help?”

iCiNG Infatuations: Five Fabulous... Nail Polishes
Girl with day-glo eyes seeks boy with whom to hold hands, share pastries, & get frisky in public places. I like to eat strawberries & commandeer the blankets, often at the same time. If your idea of a good time includes a pack of tarot cards & a pair of handcuffs, get in touch. (Boys with telekinetic powers preferred.)
Andy Warhol's Beauty Tips
“Beauty really has to do with the way a person carries it off. When you see “beauty” it has to do with the place, with what they’re wearing, what they’re standing next to, what closet they’re coming down the stairs from.”
Why I Love Atmosphere -- A Top 10 List
I talk about Atmosphere a lot on iCiNG, & I thought maybe it was time to help you all understand precisely why they are my favourite group on the entire planet. There are a bunch of reasons, some of which can be explained. The rest of it is all about the music, so I’ve thrown in videos of some of my favourite tracks.

Things I Love Thursday
Well, I’m leaving New York City on Monday for at least a month, but possibly up to 6 months. I am very, very sad to be leaving, but I am also so thankful to this city for turning it on for me. I have had the most amazing time ever. Ever ever ever. & so, as a way to say thank you, I decided to make this TiLT entirely New York themed.
How To Have A Summer Romance (With Yourself)

How To Be More Assertive
“I was hoping you could write an article on how to be assertive. I am neither shy nor aggressive, but I have such a hard time standing up to people I feel inferior to. For example, my landlord is being just dreadful to my house-mates and I, and is trying to make us pay for things we did not damage! I want to stand up to him but it’s difficult, I’ve always been taught to be respectful to those older then me. How do I muster up the courage to be assertive in this, and any situation?”

How To Give The Best Compliment Ever
Giving a compliment is simple in theory: you just open your mouth & say something positive! But sometimes we second-guess ourselves, worry about what other people will think, doubt our own authenticity & get into a panic. It’s no fun to get into a flap over something which is so charming, harmless & sweet!

If you were going to make a Wordle image that summed up all the attributes you admired — & the kind of person you wanted to be — what would it look like?
Things I Love Thursday
I think one of the best ways to get excited about your life is to take stock of the things in it which are already magnificent, fabulous & delightful! If you do it regularly, it starts to become a way of thinking — you feel that your life is already full of glory & wonder, rather than lacking. It’s one of the best ways I know to start feeling real happiness.

Candace swept into her international relations lecture at the last minute. As she set her handbag down with an unceremonious clunk, she took a long swig of water & surveyed the room. What Were You Wearing When This Song Came Out?
I went into a tiny vintage shop in the East Village yesterday, & the guy & the girl behind the counter were making pleasant banter. The guy, who was fiddling with an iPod, said, “I haven’t heard this song in years!”, & then these familiar opening notes came floating out of the speakers…

“Your life in New York seems absolutely fab! I was just wondering — what’s the story behind your trip/move? Did you just decide to pack up and spend a couple months in NY? Weekly Resolutions
Yay, weekly resolutions! A bit of structure for my (currently) incredibly random life! I’m so excited about this, haha, what a nerd! I don’t know what time this is going live for those of you in Australia & NZ, but it’s 7am here… so I’m sorry if your usual iCiNG schedule is a bit out of whack!
Observing Our Progress
I wanted to write a little bit about being observant, because often when we’re making big personal changes, it can be hard for us to see what an improvement it’s making to our quality of life. It’s all about being objective, & when it comes to something so personal & close, it’s tricky to assess it accurately.

What Would You Wear At 40?“I confess, when I shop with my 19 year-old daughter, I am so envious of the style choices she has. PLEASE do women like me a favor! How can a forty-something mom build a style without large expense (we are paying for college you know) which will look new and fresh but appropriate for our age. Remember, we don’t have the great bodies we did at your age. Classic but unexpected. Flattering. Age-appropriate but FUN! What do you see yourself wearing at 40?”
iCiNG Treats
I had the idea a while ago that it would be stupendously cool if there was a way for nonpareils to signal one another on the sly, in real life. You know how sometimes you see somebody on the street & you think, ‘I bet we have things in common’? But life is weird & hectic & sometimes you’re too shy to say anything, even though you’re thinking so hard about whether they like cupcakes & shoe shopping that you almost walk into traffic.
Weekly Resolutions
If you really want to get something done, announcing your weekly resolutions in a public forum (like here!) is an excellent way to get things started. It gives you more impetus to finish it off — people know what you’re planning & they’re waiting to see it happen, which often gives us more motivation than if it was just us working alone.

Imitation Is The Sincerest Form Of... Flattery?
“I was just wondering if you would by any chance consider writing an article about people copying you/how you would deal with that? I have a friend who’s recently started copying my music tastes, saying my favourite movies are her favourite movies and the way I speak (stupid little things like saying ‘spiffy’ a lot which I do), and the way I dress to some extent. I know I should just ignore it but it’s really irritating me that she’s basically appropriating my identity. I don’t really know what to do, and I’d feel terribly awkward confronting her about it. Maybe you could please give me some advice?”

Things To Do Before The Seasons Change
Regardless of what’s happening, temperature-wise, in your town, there are some things I think everyone should do in preparation for the upcoming season!
Problem Skin
“My skin has really been getting me down lately – I’m 15 and it was perfect before getting spots a few years ago. Now, it’s a disaster. I’ve got enlarged pores, under-skin spots (that never surface and don’t hurt), an un-even skin tone and very minor acne marks/scars. How can I get my perfect skin back? Has it been ruined? I use M·A·C Studio Fix, but on my problem skin it just looks caked on and obvious so I don’t wear it too often… I cleanse, tone and moisturise with Simple products and exfoliate once a week. My diet isn’t bad at all either – I eat quite a lot of fruit and veg and hardly any sugar but I still break out. One thing I can think of is I do smoke… Could this cause such a problem with my skin? If so – I’m quitting starting today!”
Themed Outfits For Intellectuals
I recently had a girl write to me, saying that she was sick of wearing jeans to university every day, & could I please come up with some potential outfits for her to wear? When she added, “Maybe they could be themed according to what people were studying”, a light-bulb went off in my head & I thought, YES! Yes! I WILL do that for you! It’s too great a concept not to.

What To Wear To A Job Interview
“I was turned down for a job yesterday, to my face the woman said “I would not possibly think of hiring you, you do not have the correct presentation for my office, you should really invest in a suit if you want to make it into the corporate world”. I wore a white shirt and black pants, I did not wear the suit jacket solely because I caught the train and it was 30 degrees. My Mum thought I looked good (that’s not very reliable though) and I loved the shoes and earrings I wore so I even did a daily outfit photo but then I was shot down by this woman.”

Being Happy Podcast
A podcast version of yesterday’s very popular article.
Being Happy
What is happiness? It’s hard to say, but it’s not what many people think it is. Happiness doesn’t magically come to you with a new pair of shoes, a lean body, a bulging bank account or 5 hours of sex every day. Nor does it materialise after you retire, get married, have a child or quit your job. It’s a little bit more complicated than that.

Coming Out To Homophobes
“I’m bisexual, have had past secret relationships with females and I haven’t told anyone except my boyfriend, who I know is one of the most open minded people out there. Do you know how I could tell my parents, friends and other people I know? My parents make fun of gay/bi/lesbian people. My friends stopped hanging out with one of our close friends because she told them she is a lesbian and another one because she is bi. How could you just stop hanging out with one of your friends after they told you probably one of their most in depth secrets? Also, my school isn’t exactly the most friendly towards the openly gay people or even those who “look” gay. So can you help me figure a way to come ermm – halfway out of the closet – with these people without making them spaz out and shun me?”

Fafi For MAC Cosmetics -- Reviews
On Monday, I received a FedEx package that made me yelp with excitement. It was a box from a PR company in New York. It said “MAC Cosmetics” on the outside. I thought, “Pffft, it couldn’t be. I bet someone wrote that just to get my attention!” But when I ripped it open in the elevator & looked inside, my heart started pounding. My hands trembled. I think I perspired a little bit. I ran down the corridor at full speed & started hollering excitedly at my boyfriend. Yes, I am a true MAC addict — these are the signs. It can get ugly!

Neogoth
So, what’s neogoth about, anyway? First of all, it has nothing to do with The Matrix — perish the thought! Nor does it have anything to do with bright, neon colours. ‘Neo’ is meant here to mean recent or new. Combine that with ‘goth’ & you get a fresh, modern version of the goth aesthetic. & not a moment too soon!
Weekly Resolutions
I started to ponder the concept of having weekly resolutions. I know that New Year’s resolutions can be quite daunting to a lot of people, which I’m sure isn’t helped by the fact that we are always expected to set great hulking goals for ourselves (like “Solve world hunger” & “Organise closet”). But if we could break down the time-frame, surely that would make it easier?

How To Have A Freak-Out-Free Birthday
Birthdays are supposed to be the happiest day of the year — the one where you celebrate your life with your closest friends & have an amazing time. But sometimes, they just don’t go as planned. Lots of people loathe their birthday, & refuse to do anything but watch re-runs of ‘Friends’ all day. Others find themselves filled with a nameless dread, while some people resort to getting drunk, high, having a bad one-night stand or spending most of the day in tears.

The Ultimate Crush Decoder Ring!
I get emails all the time from people who are in the grips of a major crush. The kind of crush that lives up to its name — the sort that squeezes your insides, makes you hyperventilate & always makes you feel like you’re not being very impressive at all. I realised I hadn’t written an article on how to stop a crush from becoming a crash, or how to salvage the wreckage if it does, & with Valentine’s Day coming up, it seemed appropriate! So, here it is — your crush decoder!
Francesca Lia Block
“All the girls were infatuated with Dirk; he wouldn’t pay any attention to them. But on the first day of the semester, Dirk saw Weetzie in his art class. She was a skinny girl with a bleach-blonde flat-top. Under the pink Harlequin sunglasses, strawberry lipstick, earrings dangling charms, and sugar-frosted eye shadow she was really almost beautiful. Sometimes she wore Levi’s with white-suede fringe sewn down the legs and a feathered Indian headdress, sometimes old fifties’ taffeta dresses covered with poetry written in glitter, or dresses made of kids’ sheets printed with pink piglets or Disney characters.”

Man Bags
Alright boys, let’s face facts. Gone are the days where everything you needed to survive a day in this modern fast-paced world can fit in your pocket. It’s just not doable any more. If you’re roaming around the streets with just your wallet in your pocket, you’re either alarmingly under-equipped for life, or you’re cheating and getting your other half to cart around your stuff around for you. And that’s not cool.

Preparing For 2008
Here are some little things you can do to make your transition into 2008 even better. I advise doing most of them in that delicious time of nothingness that is the 25th to 31st of December. Eat a little, nap a little, tick one of these off your list, then eat some more. Sounds like a good time to me!
New Zealand Style

Christmas Cheer!
“It’s Christmas time as you know. Usually one of my favourite times, but this year, I’m not excited. Nothing is exciting me. I find it terribly upsetting but nothing is triggering those wonderful memories. All I can think about is the bad from last year, the things I don’t want to do this season. Needless to say sugarplums are not dancing in my head. I’ve drunk eggnog, hot cocoa, eaten candy canes… Still I find myself rather Grinch-ish. Audrey's Guide To Baldness
A friend recently had to come to terms with the fact that yes, he was indeed losing his hair. It came as quite a shock as he’s not exactly “old”, is quite virile and healthy. Unfortunately, male pattern baldness is a fact of life.
Tomboy Boot Camp
“I was a tomboy as a child, then as a teenager I had an ubercasual, slightly androgynous style (jeans/tees/trainers). But now I’m rapidly approaching 20 and desperate to look and feel feminine and sophisticated. I tried to throw myself in at the deep end by buying a couple of pretty skirts, but I feel overdressed and awkward so I’ve never actually worn them outside my flat. How can I ease myself gradually into this girly stuff (without feeling like a drag queen)? And how can I look feminine and still be casual for uni?”

A Model Search
On Saturday morning, I woke up at 6.30am to offer my services as an extremely amateur make-up artist at a modelling competition. Earlier that week, my teacher had asked me & a couple of other girls in my class to help her do faces at a show, & I was delighted (& totally flattered) to accept.

The only trouble is that my boyfriend utterly despises tattoos and has said himself he would find me less attractive if I had them done. He’s never ever said anything like that before and I don’t know what to do. Did people try to talk you out of getting inked?”

You know those effortlessly gorgeous movie stars who wear a t-shirt & jeans on their day off but look impeccable? I am not one of those types. When I dress down like that, I feel like a soccer mother.
Celebrity Outreach
I have a recurring fantasy which involves me writing a letter to a celebrity & changing their life, somehow. Just in some small way — giving them a bit of unexpected support. I have learned what a difference it makes. In this fantasy, it’s always a celebrity who has fallen from grace in some way, or who is no longer “A List” for whatever reason. Someone who I think needs a bit of love & encouragement.
Ensure Yourself A Lovely Week With The Help Of The Internet!
I know there are lots of superb ways to improve your week, but when you’re stuck at a desk 5 days out of 7, it can be a bit tough to remember to breathe deeply, splash on some nice perfume or to muster the energy to go to yoga class. But never fear, because the internet is here to help! Here are some things I suggest doing today, so that you have a whole week of treats ahead of you.

Workplace Friendships
“I currently work at a University office, and just started a month ago. There are three girls here around my age, who are friends. I would like to start conversations with them, and I can tell they are nice because we all greet each other daily. I don’t know what to say, but I do see them surfing the same clothing websites I visit, so that could be a topic starter. Any advice?”

Decorating A Room
I think bedrooms say a lot about their owner. If you don’t believe me, think about your own room (or even cast a glance around it). Is it dark & messy? Do you ever make your bed? Do you keep the blinds open at all times?
Embracing Your Inner Nerd
Recently, my friend Nadia & I went to a “nerdcore” themed party. We were trying to think of ways to appear nerdy but still stylish, when I came up with the idea of wearing blinged-out calculators.

Wherever You Go, There You Are
As we move from city to city, place to place, the one constant is us. Once the newness & excitement of moving has worn off, we often find that we are depressed again. We still dislike people. We still hate work. Our relationship still drains our energy & happiness. We still binge eat or drink too much or fritter our money away. If we don’t change anything about ourselves, we just take whatever is inside us wherever we go.

Instant Glamour & Fashion Fixes
Sometimes life happens quickly & we don’t have time to construct glamorous outfits or do elaborate makeup. We just have a few seconds & we have to go, go, go! I wrote this little guide to “instant glamour” to help you out in these kinds of situations. Of course, when we only have a few seconds, the last thing you want to do is dig around my website trying to find an article! My suggestion is that you print this out & stick it on the inside door of your makeup cabinet or somewhere near your closet. I hope it helps!
Nippies Contest Winners!
I have to tell you, when I came up with the idea for this contest, I was NOT expecting to hear so many stories of nipple trauma! Who knew they were such a source of horror for so many people?! It was actually quite harrowing.

Do some research. Really sit down & have a think about your dress-up options. Once you start pondering it, the ideas will really start to flow, it’s just that you need to be in the mindset first.
Is My Boyfriend Cheating On Me?
“I am wondering if you can give some advice. I’ve been dating this guy for about 2 and a half months. Now I know that Gala Darling is probably not your birth name ;) and I was wondering how you managed to go through with the name change. I’m moving to France in a few weeks and of course I am going to introduce myself to everyone with my middle name but back home it probably won’t be as easy. I’m really shy so I don’t know if I can just tell everyone “Oh, by the way, that’s not my name anymore!” How did you do it? & does your family call you Gala? I don’t think my family could ever get used to it!!”

Clever words from Eleanor Roosevelt.
A Doctor's Dilemma
“I am writing because I’d like to make a change in my life. I currently work full time to put myself through night school. I’m going to be a physician… in many, many, many years. I feel like my life is surrounded by things for the future and nothing for ‘now’. I work at a doctor’s office (which I enjoy), but I was thinking about doing something that may not be totally conducive for my future but would give me a sense of control that I desperately need. I want to (are you ready?) go to esthetician school. It will take about six months and leave me 5K-8K in debt. I think I’ll be able to work and still attend night school once I’ve graduated. I just want something in my life that I feel is mine, NOW, fully. I’m always working for tomorrow & I’ve forgotten to live for today. I’ve become very reclusive and have developed severe anxiety. I need something. I’m taking fiddle lessons, but I feel like I need more. I’m only 23 and I feel like I’ve wasted so much of my life. That’s crazy right? I mean, I’m young and can make my life anything…right? No rules? No specific paths I need to follow? I dunno.”

Camping In Style
Recently, a very sweet girl told me she was on her way to a school camp & didn’t know what to wear. She said that while her mother always tells her to take practical clothes, she often felt shown-up by the other girls, who were immaculately groomed — even after canoeing! Ahh, the joy of school. But it did prompt me to think that surely there was a way to camp in style. It can’t be all mosquito spray & burned marshmallows, can it?

Skinny Bitch -- Book Review
I have read reviews of Skinny Bitch that say it’s like reading something written by your best girlfriend. If that is true, we are in worse trouble than we thought. In real life, I wouldn’t give someone who spoke to me like that the time of day, never mind the accolade of being my “best girlfriend”! Hopefully you wouldn’t either!

Daily Outfit -- 10th September 2007
I’m wearing a whole lot of items I never usually wear, in honour of the wardrobe taming series!
Equestrian Chic
I was never one of those “horsey girls”. You know, those ones who were NUTS about horses. They read The Pony Club books, had weekly riding lessons & obsessively doodled the likeness of their favourite horse, “Speckle”, in the margins of their math book. Maybe you were one of them! I wasn’t.
Wardrobe Taming -- Day Two
Your mission for today is to wear that piece of clothing. You can style it up with whatever else you’ve got.
Wardrobe Taming -- Day One
What’s stopping you from looking your best? When I say best, I mean drop-dead gorgeous. I mean, you could show up Angelina Jolie/Brad Pitt on the red carpet. I mean feeling good in everything you own. So, what’s holding you back?

Sophisticated enough to satisfy our grown-up side, delicious enough to bring out our inner Veruca Salt.”

Quote of the Day -- 5th September 2007
Oscar Wilde, baby!
Corset Remix
The other day, a friend & I were discussing our old gothic predilections. It turned out we were both harbouring corsets in our closets, but since we both felt like we had moved past our old style, didn’t really know what to do with them. Corsets, especially the good ones, tend to be really expensive & some of them are gorgeous pieces of work. Too precious to throw out or give away, but too ‘goth’ to wear. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realised there was a middle ground.

How To Be Confident
Being ‘different’ is always harder than being ‘normal’ & fitting in, towing the line. There is always more effort involved. Any schmuck can wear jeans & comb their hair & be a lemming. It takes someone with guts & a bit of a twist to do something different.

He says it hurts him when I say that, but I can’t help stop thinking about his tendencies and his flirtatious personality.”

Being The New Kid
“I’m 15 and I’ve lived in the same small rural town since 1st grade! My family’s moving a few hours away to be by my grandpa (he’s sick) and I’m going to be plopped into the middle of a big (to me haha) city high school that’s twice the size of my old one… I’m kind of nervous as I’ve never been a “new kid” before. So how do I make friends and deal with the first few days when I don’t know anyone and am sitting alone at the lunch table? I’m not sure how to deal with leaving all my friends behind.”

How To Find A Boyfriend
“Well, my problem is that I’m still very young. I’m only fifteen, but there is only one thing on my mind — getting a boyfriend. It seems silly when I write it out, but everybody around me has so much experience in the boy department but I feel left out. I’ve never had a “real” boyfriend, only one or two little flings in middle school. I really just want somebody with whom I can share good times, and I’m just seeking some male attention. I don’t know what seems to be wrong me with me, but I can never get a guy! Do you have any suggestions?”

Old London Town
“I was wondering if you would perhaps ask the iCiNG bowl for lesser-known things to do in London? Places to shop, places to visit etc. etc. etc. Everyone I’ve asked has said “Camden Camden Camden!” but I find Camden a little … too of-the-moment.”
My Eye Makeup Makes Me Look Like A Clown!
“Recently, some of my relatives gave me an AMAZING make-up kit. It has great color selections, especially in the eye make-up department. At the young age of 13, I want to keep my make-up relatively subdued, but whenever I put on anything other than a sheer beige color, I can’t help but feel like a clown! You often wear bright, crazy eye make-up, and I was hoping that you had some tips for wearing them with confidence.”

Just because you can slide those jeans over your hips does not mean you should own them! When looking at clothing, always always always take your body shape into account, & trends be damned.

The Fashionable Jew
“I have to abide by some rather strict religious rules with regard to dress – not just at school, everywhere. (The rules: no pants, nothing tight or revealing, shirts up to the collar bone and past the elbows, absolutely no exposed midriff, skirts past the knee, no visible underwear, nothing transparent or too sexy in general.) I was wondering if you could help me get out of my rut, or if I should just resort to wearing a burka.”

Dealing With Online Nastiness
“I remember when someone wrote a nasty comment about you, and you handled it so well! Could you dish out some advice on how to handle online nastiness… like outright rudeness, public bitching and people who seem to have nothing better to do with their time than insult you and make you angry? I’ve been dealing with a fair bit of this lately and would LOVE it if you wrote an article about it!”

Vegas, Baby, Vegas!
“Hi Gala,
Ever been to Las Vegas? I have just been told by my work that they’re going to be sending me there for a conference in September (lucky me!). I figure I’ll take a couple of days of annual leave to take a look around and shop (as I’d have to pay for my own accommodation/food for those couple of days and the short notice doesn’t leave much saving time, I won’t be able to make it longer). Any tips on must-dos, best places to shop (particularly those with most bang for your buck) and on good, relatively cheap, places to stay?”

A Basic Shoe Collection
“I’m currently in the process of trying to expand my shoe collection (on a budget) – but since I can’t afford my every whim (just-graduating-ex-university-student) I’m looking for a a well-rounded shoe collection. Sneakers, heels, flats, boots, sandals, etc… & I was curious to know what you think the ‘basic’ shoes are to have in your closet, before you start fleshing each type out? I know trends change but I mean those timeless basic shoes a girl can fall back on when her partner’s grandma drops by unexpectedly to take them out to dinner… (happened last night, I swear!)”

Non-Monotonous Summer Dressing
“This is inspired by your post on winter dressing… and your post on T-shirts seems to have anticipated my question, so hopefully you will feel up to tackling my problem, or at least giving me a few links in the right direction. Unlike you lucky people who are moving into winter (my favorite season – seriously!) I am living in Tokyo and things are getting hot and humid very fast. Apart from simply wearing less, do you have any suggestions for dressing for summer? Somehow I am hoping that I can layer things, even though it will probably just make me unbearably hot. I just feel that having a top – say a t-shirt – and a bottom – say a pair of cotton trousers – gets monotonous. Advice? Yoroshiku ne!”

Things I Learned From Watching Miss Universe 2007
Some people enter a room & even before they introduce themselves, you know you’re in for a sleigh-ride to Boredomville. iCiNG's May Crush List
There were two pieces of criteria that needed to be well-filled to get onto this list. Talent & sex appeal. I admit, sometimes I can be shallow. It is not just good enough to be clever — which is why people like Stephen Hawking are notably absent. It’s not okay just to be cute, either. Style without substance has never really been my bag.
Madame Pompadour
On an exploratory visit to the Victoria Markets, Ana & I stumbled across a shop called Madame Pompadour. It’s gorgeous — like something from a Francesca Lia Block book. It is INSANELY pink, a treasure trove of homeware, clothing & accessories. I took a whole bunch of pictures because I thought it was gorgeous.
How To Rock A Wig
“Oh my gosh, will you please write an article on how to wear a wig! I’ve tried cheap ones on at novelty shops before, but they just look like a Halloween costume on me. But your looks just wonderful, like I actually thought you dyed your hair for a minute. It doesn’t have to look completely natural, but I would love to know how you pulled that off without making it look like it was just a silly costume. Also, what did you do with your hair underneath it?”

Styling Without Ironing
“Hi Gala, I was wondering whether you could include some tips on professional styling when attempting to avoid clothes that need ironing. I don’t hate ironing, but am intrinsically lazy and simply never get around to it. Thus, a lot of my work clothes are either waiting to be ironed or don’t require ironing but are really humdrum and lead to the fashion doldrums. Help please!”
Daily Outfit -- 28th March 2007
I strongly suspect that I am a nut. Pink afro wigs are like that.

I thought some of you might find these pictures stylistically inspiring…
Gala's Guide To Melbourne
Melbourne can be a difficult city for visitors. While the main streets are obvious to everyone, they’re not where the really interesting things are. Melbourne requires a bit of effort — think of it as a treasure hunt. Go into weird alleyways, peer into arcades, allow yourself time to wander through & really experience the place.
Erica Jong's Birthday
Erica Jong ages another year. Here’s how you can celebrate…
Little Things
I think life should be made up of small delicacies. I don’t mean little cakes every two hours — though, of course, that would be pretty nice — I mean tiny things which propel you forward & invigorate you.
Vlog 008
A video of me doing ridiculous things, including prancing around on the beach, eating a strawberry tart, & a guided tour of my closet.
Quote of the Day -- 24th March 2007
Coco Chanel.
Possible Style Icons
I’m not 100% sure on either of these girls yet, but I think they have definite potential.
Ballet Do's & Don'ts
I haven’t been to the ballet since I was in school, so it was a very exciting experience. For those of you who may be in a similar situation in the near future, I thought I would give you my tips on how to do it properly.

What are you guilty of over-wearing? Please tell me I’m not the only one!
I'm So Jealous!
“I really think you should do an article on dealing with jealousy. I just got hit really badly
today with jealousy since my friend got accepted to this school and I got rejected from mine, even though the ones I applied to are way harder to get into. I just feel like it is unfair since she has not-so-great grades and doesn’t try, while I put my all into everything I do and have straight A’s. It’s hard to explain. But the green-eyed-monster affects us all sometimes…”
i.D.U.D. #002 -- More Pictures!
Photos of Jenny as Peter Pan & Nana as a rococo court lady!
Primp My Ride
“I have an article idea for you me dear. Pimp my ride Gala-stylezzz! Please? The Toyota Corona I got for my 30th is sooooooo lame and has no sass compared to my old Peugeot that gave up. Help me make my ease-ey pease-ey Japanese-ey car cool?”

Worried About International Dress-Up Day?
I know that some of you are probably still fretting over your costume, but I just thought I’d give you a nudge in the right direction.

Concealer Recommendations
“I need a new concealer. I don’t particularly want to spend heeeps of money on it but I want it to be a good one and to last a while (ie not a tube skinnier than my pinkie finger!). I like to use the creamier ones (as opposed to a concealer stick) I find these blend a lot easier. Do you have any suggestions?”

How To Deal With The End Of A Relationship
People deal with the end of relationships in various ways. Some people go the healthy route (lots of therapy, good food, exercise & meditation, for example) & some go the unhealthy way (say, lots of alcohol, sex with anyone who pays them a compliment, drugs to create artificial joy & an annoying facial tic).
Moisturiser
Since I recently ran out of Afterlife, my favourite ever moisturiser by Lush (which has been DISCONTINUED, the horror!), I have been on the search for something as good to replace it.
How To Get A Great Tattoo And Never Regret It
While tattoos can be fantastic & beautiful, they can also be hideous & embarrassing. This article will tell you about the sort of things you need to consider before you get a tattoo, how to pick a design, how to choose a tattoo artist & how to look after it once it’s done.
Daily Outfit -- 13th March 2007
This is what I wore to see Hot Fuzz play at ACMI. I didn’t really think it would be to my taste, but it was made by the guys who did Shaun Of The Dead… & it was hilarious.
Giving Up The Ghost
Why not stop reading about the lives of people you dislike?
Unexpected Guests
Sometimes, people just turn up on your doorstep without warning. They could be your best friend, a relative or a distant acquaintance, but regardless, they all bring similar challenges. Where are they going to sleep?! How can you make them feel comfortable? & the ever-pressing question… when are they going to leave, & how can you politely reclaim your life (& living room)?
Cute Tabi Socks And The Footwear Conundrum
The question is… how would you wear them? You could pair them with ballet flats but I don’t know if geishas & ballet really mix. Plus, their cute toe-snuggling design would be hidden.
Daily Outfit -- 3rd March 2007
The temperature is definitely dropping. I don’t know if I’d call it autumn just yet, but very soon.
Negative People
The supremely negative are obvious — they have a puckered-up mouth from years of scowling, they whine a lot, they complain, they are blind to anything good happening in the world, & they want to take you down with them. However, sometimes negative people are hard to spot, until you step back from the situation. They talk smack about everyone, including you, under the pretense of “being your friend” & “honesty”. “I’m only saying this because I care about you!” they protest, after sticking a carving knife in your back.
How To Wear A Scarf
“I bought a couple of scarves the other day and would love to know the best way to wear them! It sounds like a silly question as I know how to tie a scarf, but yours look fab and so effortless. One I bought is long, slim and silkish, black with skinny red double striped border. The other is a square (to be folded into a triangle) and cotton with a grey tiger print and tiger face on one corner – red trim. They would both give quite a different look. Any advice would be great!”
Shaved-Back Hairline
That’s how I looked three years ago! I basically shaved my hairline back about three or four centimetres. I don’t know why I did it, I just grabbed a razor & went to town on myself! I think it looks mildly cute, in a lost-hardcore-vegan kinda way.

Avoiding Creeps
Nobody likes to be yelled at in the street, whistled at, or otherwise ogled. I know that a lot of women are nervous to leave the house wearing a short skirt, high heels, a low-cut top or anything that could be perceived as “slutty”. It really angers me that people aren’t able to dress however they like because of other people’s stunted social prowess.
Style Tips -- 8th March 2007

Quality and Conformity
With credit card debt at an all-time high, it’s not the most difficult jump to make. People aren’t being valued more highly these days — it is just getting easier & easier to spend beyond your means. It is basic conformity: you see other people doing something & you want to do it too.
What Are Your Style Trademarks?
I used to love the idea of having some piece of jewellery that I always wore — I really liked the idea of having a permanent identifier. Now I feel like it’s okay for my identity to be more fluid, to dress like an eccentric Parisian one day & to look like a Japanese raver the next.
How To Settle Into A City (Part Two: Domestic)
This is part two of How To Settle Into A City. While it’s all very well & good to have a raging social life (or to get preoccupied trying to create one), this will mean very little if your home life is hell.
How To Settle Into A City (Part One: Social)
“I am moving to Auckland at the end of this year (with my boyfriend) so that I can attend university up there. How does one make friends? I’ve heard all the ‘take a class/join a club’ suggestions which I’m not suggesting aren’t valid, but I’ve taken many classes and haven’t really become great friends with any of the other attendees. I don’t want to come on too strong and seem desperate. Also I’m quite shy. Waaaah… Gala, how do I make friends in a foreign environment?!?!”
How To Rock A Beehive
“Hello, lovely! First off, thanks for being awesome! Love love love the site! Secondly, I have a question. Do you know of a tutorial or something on how to do your hair like a 60’s beehive? I don’t know if mine is long enough yet but I have decided to let it grow for the moment & I am DYING to do it in a beehive! I know you have short hair, but you are the only person I could think to ask something like this. Thanks!”
Visiting A Mall
Miles of shiny linoleum, epilepsy-inducing lights, & of course, the other patrons. Oh, the other patrons!
Daily Outfit -- 2nd March 2007
This is what I wore to see Marie Antoinette in the Royal Botanic Gardens. Hundreds of people sitting in a big clearing, the moon shining above, bats flying around our heads (seriously). It is less idyllic than it sounds. The bats were cool, though.

How Do I Choose An Eyeshadow Which Suits Me?
“My mother is not one of those women who wears a lot of make-up. The most she’ll ever wear is foundation and powder. Unfortunately for me, that means she can’t give me tips or tricks on choosing or applying make-up. How do you choose an eyeshadow and once you’ve found one, how do you go about wearing it? Sounds silly, but I’m desperate for help.”

Buying Gifts For Teenage Girls
“I am off to a young cousin’s birthday festivity this weekend with no clue of what to get her for her 14th birthday. She is an aspiring and adorable trendsetter, with stacks of Vogue and dress sketches around her young room. However, in the ever competitive world of high school it can be difficult to make a mark with your own fashion. What could I buy her that she would appreciate, adore and wear? I would like her to step away from the name brands and explore the endless world of personal fashion… but at such a young age how can I help?”

How To Pack A Suitcase

I would ideally like to know who is the old school company who make these… I want great design and manufacturers integrity, with mail-order-ability from the colonies.”

Matching Personality To Fragrance
I love to look through the list of Demeter fragrances & imagine myself wearing them, but often I think that I would have to be a certain type of person to wear, say, Stable (hay, muck & animal sweat) or Thunderstorm (humid air & soil). Here then, are some of my scent suggestions for various people I hold in high esteem.

An International Dress-Up Party
Basically, my idea is that one day a month, anyone who wanted to be involved would dress in a way which incorporated a previously decided theme. The ultimate aim, other than having fun, would be to take a photo of yourself “on theme” & then I would publish all the pictures I received. Instant internet fame!
The Perfect Roadtrip
Every now & then when your life gets complicated & the weasels start closing in, the only real cure is to load up on heinous chemicals & then drive like a bastard from Hollywood to Las Vegas. Five Fashion Crimes & How To Avoid Them
I read a “letter to the editor” yesterday from some crotchetty old man saying that he was sick of being berated for wearing crocs & that they were the only thing comfortable enough for him to walk in. That’s fine if you’re ANCIENT but if you’re NOT then get some REAL SHOES!
Accessorising For Men
“I’ve got a boyfriend who’s not altogether a bad dresser – what he wears is what the majority of boys in my (very warm) country dress in: big tees/polo tees paired with jeans or berms, with Nike dunks, Adidas superstars or flip-flops. But I’d love to see him dress up just a little bit more, with a bit of accessorising maybe. What would you suggest? And how would you suggest integrating these items into his daily wardrobe?”
Bindi Revival
The more thought I give it, the more I am convinced that a bindi is the ultimate fashion accessory. They’re small, cheap & come in about a million different varieties.
How To Beat Problem Skin Into Submission

Valentine's Day Treats
Okay. I know Valentine’s Day is a major sore point with a lot of people. Capitalist holiday, blah blah blah, yeah I know. I used to be part of the anti-Valentine’s brigade myself. I have since realised that being against anything is a huge waste of energy which I do my very best not to participate in.
January 2007
Signature ScentsCoco Chanel said that you should wear perfume wherever you want to be kissed, & when Marilyn Monroe was asked what she wore to bed, she replied “two drops of Chanel No.5”. Of course, both statements were excellent P.R. for Chanel’s perfumes. I, personally, have never understood the appeal of Chanel No. 5. It’s lacking something.
These, however, are perfect — which is why I own them…
Daily Outfit -- 31st January 2007
I’m going for a Parisian theme recently. I think it’s because of the black manicure — I feel that the only people who really carry this off effectively are either the French, goths or emo kids (& I would prefer to feel French).
Living A More Celebratory Life
Here are some days I celebrate: the how & the why.
Style Icons: Diana Vreeland
Diana Vreeland was an incredible woman. Born in 1906 in Paris, she spent most of her life in New York & rose to acclaim for her work as fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar & later at Vogue. Her eccentricies are what make her so interesting to me.

How To Walk In High Heels

Trends For 2007 and How To Avoid Looking Like A Fashion Victim
Of course with the dawn of a new year, there is a lot of babble about what’s going to be “in” this year. The thing is, even if you loathe trends & fashion dictates in general, you’re still going to see this stuff in stores. It may even replace the things you’re used to buying, meaning you are forced to incorporate this “trendy stuff” into your wardrobe. I thought I would write a piece on things you’re likely to see, & how to work them in without looking tragic.

First Impressions Count and the Value of Image Consultation
I was recently invited by a friend of mine, Rod, to attend his image consultation at First Impressions Count in Brunswick. He was given a voucher by a friend at a barbeque & thought it would be an interesting experiment, & I was keen to go along & see how it went. The one problem I seem to have fashion wise is pies. I have eaten a few too many and now have a pie shaped tummy.
Casual Suit Jackets
I see alot of hipsters wearing suit jackets without the rest of the suit. Is this just wrong? Or are there certain conditions in which this can be pulled off?
The New Eyebrow
As you know, I am not the greatest trend follower, but I am delighted to report that the strong eyebrow is “in”! I have always been a fan of this look (as my own eyebrows will testify) & I’m very happy that I will be seeing more of it on the street.
