Influencer

I’m speaking at Influencer Conference 10 on September 30th. My panel is called La Nouvelle Mode: The Unconventional New Trends of Fashion.

What is Influencer10?

Influencer10 is a 2-day conference in New York City designed to bring together key influencers in technology, marketing & advertising, arts & music, philanthropy and entrepreneurship to discuss the current and future landscape of Influencer culture. The symposium will feature a series of panel discussions and presentations by thought leaders and marketing and brand managers.

Who are the Influencers?

Simply put, Influencers are the few that lead the many. Alternatively known as early adopters, thought purveyors or trendsetters, they are the creators of the styles and movements that others adopt. Their actions have been harnessed to create affinity between key audiences and brands and products and services. Their culture exists outside the purview of most traditional marketing channels, therefore accessing them in any substantive way has proven almost impossible. They create and shape a unique worldview within their chosen disciplines and in turn speak to their individual networks at a much deeper and richer level. They move forward linearly forging new archetypes within technology, music, art, fashion, film, philanthropy and communication.

I was interviewed for the Emerging Writers’ Festival in a session called Stuck in a lift with… Gala Darling.

A series of short interviews in which an emerging writers gets a chance to quiz one of their writing heroes about the writing and books they enjoy reading. Over the space of an hour the writer will be asked a series of questions based on the floors of the building that their lift is travelling – from the first book they read to books they could not put down.

It was broadcast live over Twitter on Thursday 27 May at 2pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time).

I spoke at SXSW Interactive in Austin, TX on Sunday 14th March 2010 on the panel Selling Subculture Without Selling Out.

On the panel with me was Molly Crabapple (Dr Sketchy’s), Richard Nash (Soft Skull Books) & Raymond Roker (URB magazine). The panel was moderated by Jeff Newelt. We discussed why traditional marketing techniques don’t work with indie audiences, how companies can identify respected tastemakers, how individuals can work with big business without losing credibility & why internal bureaucracy is the enemy of an effective subcultural marketing effort.
