iCiNG Day #001

Lorena:

“I’m masquerading as my heroine, Frida Kahlo. Kahlo’s work embodies the organic and artisanal spirit of Mexico while exorcising her very personal demons. She portrayed her hair snipped off, her organs spilled out, her body split into twins. She understood the duality of inhabiting multiple identities, and importance of feeling whole. I’m half Mexican and half white and my whole life I’ve felt like I’m not enough of either. I’m trapped in the middle, a coconut, a vendida, a pocha. When I found out the most iconic Mexican artist in the world had a German father, I learned that it’s not your bloodline, but the passion that flows through your blood.”

“For my iCiNG Day celebration I hosted a Tea Party! I held it on Friday so all of my friends could come over after school, instead of having to make a big expedition to my house. I asked them to please dress up, bring baked goods/tea if possible, and that big hats were wonderful, but not required (I had some extra hats for anyone who needed). The night before my mother and I set the table very nicely with my grandmothers wedding china and silver! We served some cheesy hors d’oeuvres and some cookies that a friend brought, cucumber sandwiches, and I also made some lavender fudge (your recommendation) the night before to serve. Delicious! All in all, my tea party was a big hit! Thank you Ms. Gala Darling for creating iCiNG Day!”

Kate:

“I gathered together four favourite friends. We went to the park & played music for passersby – some serious songs (Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen), some not-so-serious (Complicated by Avril Lavigne). After our hands had gone numb from the cold, we packed up our instruments & went inside, where we had lots & lots of chocolate & vanilla cupcakes. We did something called warm fuzzies, which is where you go around the circle & everyone says something nice about each other person. It made us all feel really great. After many hours of partying & cupcakes & laughing, I walked everyone to the subway station. I’d been working up my courage to give a confession letter to my crush, who was one of the guests. I was about to chicken out, but at the last moment, I decided to give her the letter. I won’t go into all the gushy details but the end result was, my huge crush was reciprocated, & we are ‘girlfriends’ now I guess :) YAY!”

“I had an absolutely wonderful day saturday with friends as we all celebrated a day of icing, playing harmonicas, keyboards and guitars, dancing jigs, singing songs in a park, then exchanging warm fuzzies with one another, not to mention eating a positively evil amount of homemade cupcakes (and having the leftovers for breakfast). My friend Kate is also sending you a similar email describing the same gathering. Icing Day was an utterly fabulous creation, thank you so much for your brilliance. Today would never have happened without ya!”

Camilla:

“I organized a little get together with my friends, and of course we had great time, full of weird conversations and delicious cupcakes. The cupcakes are from a local bakery, and I ordered them with seahorses because I love sea animals.”

“Saturday was my first ever Icing Day and I decided to celebrate “I love New York”! I wore my ‘I love New York’ t-shirt and ate margarita pizza for lunch. I was also wearing the New York edition Impulse deodorant to add some effect. After an hour of celebrating Icing Day there was no more pizza left! I thought to myself, “What else can I do to celebrate my love of New York?” Then I remembered my love of music and my hero being John Lennon (from The Beatles and who died in New York). Perfect! I grabbed my guitar, sunscreen and sunglasses and sat in the shade playing my guitar and writing a song! It turned out to be the most relaxing day ever!”

“When I realized that icing day was this weekend, I was sad; I had nothing to celebrate. My week was horrible; my boyfriend and I were having a horrible time, I didn’t see him in all week. I was so depressed; my classmates were all worried about me-I looked like an old bag, scattered around the desk just like if I had melted. Well, this Saturday the guy and I went to this beautiful park, to see if we could talk things and maybe resolve them. It was a great sunny day, the park was full of kids, dogs, happy people. Well, we solved our problems! It was so good, I think it was the best iCiNG day celebration in the world. I’m happy now! I hope all you guys had an awesome iCiNG weekend just like I did! :D”

Nadine:

“I swear I did Surf Club ALL blimmin’ weekend! (You know, kids training to be future lifeguards.) How do I make this work in with iCiNG day . . . ? I love being fit – I have never been this fit before. Over the last year I have trained hard and maintained a good baseline cardio-vascular fitness.I love that I have PASSED my pool test (200m in less than four-and-a-half minutes), easily! I love the beach. I love being in the surf. Very exhilarating! I love the feeling of salt water on your skin. I love the way salt and sun bleach up my blonde hair. I love the way my whole family does Surf Club together. I love running on sand in bare feet. I love my children’s confidence. I love coaching kids. I love learning from experienced people. I love encouraging less-experienced people. I love feeling competent and useful. I love the fact my deeply non-sporty self can DO this stuff! I would never have had the confidence to even try it as a kid. I love barbecued sausages-in-bread with tomato sauce and mustard (“custard” as my youngest calls it). There you go! Glamorous? No! Accurate? Yes! (And no photos, because I was in the water.)”

“I had an amazing Icing Day. I dressed up like a Panda and went and did all my favorite things in my town, visited M.A.C. did a bit of shopping, went to my favorite park -library and Starbucks. Drank Hot Tea and Street Performed, Had a fun photoshoot. Went and got my septum pierced, hung out with my great friend Cara and went out for a night of dancing at my favorite Dance-a-Rama.”

“Thought I’d share with you some of the photos from iCing Day. I spent a lot of time at the beach with family and friends, but didn’t take my camera because it doesn’t like sand! It was good just hearting my best friend and my boyfriend and son, without having to dress up or do much except swim and play – it was 36 degrees here so it was too hot to stay inside. Later than afternoon my son and I went to the Walk Against Warming because we heart the planet. I took some photos there and here they are.”

“For iCiNG day, I gave my kitten a photo-shoot (everyone deserves to feel famous at least once in their lifetime), serenaded my pets on the keyboard, listened to swing music (dancing in the kitchen in my favourite heels), made a batch of purple cupcakes (literally…. I mixed food dye into the mixture) and called my lovely boyfriend in Melbourne. He thinks I’m a nutcase now >_< . The looks my pets gave me were absolutely priceless as I played David Bowie songs to them and sang loudly, but I think secretly they enjoyed it. It was a great day."

L. Amelia Raley

“I’m obsessed with time travel. Since the age of 17, I’ve wanted to live in 1934, and although there is no way to actually transport myself into that exact year, I’m cultivating many things in my life that feel like I’m successfully living in the past. Having recently finished graduate school, I did a complete 180 with my plans of teaching, moved to a big city, and begun working in a vintage boutique. My celebration for iCiNG Day was to bring myself and my love for the past out into the open, to the public, no holding back!

Molly:

“Since Icing Day fell on my best friend’s and my birthday weekend, we were able to party all weekend!!! We went to the cheesecake factory for dinner with another friend, and the food was amazing!!! We had an hour wait to get in, though, so we passed time in the lobby playing hot potato and doing the hokey pokey. We slept at her house and watched the duckie dance from pretty in pink about 20 times. The next day all our other friends came over and we had a bonfire and made s’mores and played some wicked games of twister. This was most likely one of the most fun weekends of my life!!!”

ElizaMolly:

“For iCiNG day, I decided to celebrate by getting a spray tan with one of my friends, and the result turned out quite fabulous, if I do say so myself. After our lovely spray tans, I came home and photos with my gorgeous new dog Quiche.”

Mandy:

“Here are my pictures from iCiNG day! I enjoyed myself immensely. I dressed up and walked around my campus with my veiled hat taking pictures and pretending to be a fabulously eccentric old fashion lady. Then I came back to my room and ate cupcakes and watched musicals the rest of the day. Sounds simple, but it was a wonderful day. :^)”

Cate:

“I thought and thought about iCiNG day and how I was going to to celebrate it, and then I figured it out. I’ve gained a bit of weight in the past year after recovering from an icky eating disorder—I’m still trying to find a happy medium, so to speak—and I realized that I had been shoving myself in my old (very small) clothes and it was making me feel fat and ugly every day. I also realized that I didn’t have a pair of boots I really loved. So I went to all my favorite stores all over Connecticut and picked out a whole new wardrobe for myself. Fabulous new piratey-biker chick boots, skinny jeans, buttondowns with really neat detailing that accentuate my larger bustline and make my waist look tiny, really fabulous black pants, armwarmers, and a fire engine red hat. I also got my hair cut and colored, and a manicure and pedicure, and I’m sitting here in the office today feeling like a brand new person. Thank you, thank you for creating iCiNG day, it was a beautiful day of reaffirmation to myself that even though I’m not a size 2 at 5’7” anymore, I’m still lovely at a size 10!”

Laura:

“Well I missed Icing day, as I was whisked away to Budapest for a surprise weekend But I hope you can put this up anyway. I heart…... Lots of things but the main one. My boyfriend. Not only does he put up with my moods but he pulled out all the stops and arranged a fabulous trip to Budapest where we had the most amazing time and SNOW as well!! Why?? Because I have just given up my job and my house and we are moving in together, and I’m getting slightly stressed at all the stuff to arrange and sort out. So he decided that a surprise trip would be the best way to get me to chill out a bit, and you know what it worked. A weekend in a country that we didn’t know or a language we couldn’t speak, with no outside distractions like mobile phones. Really made me appreciate what I have and how lucky I am. A bit cheesy I know but hey we all have those moments in our life don’t we?? haha! Oh… I heart your clothes aswell :D I’ve put a pic of me and my boyfriend very cold in front of the Royal Palace in Budapest. If you haven’t been there you really should. The whole city is amazing.”
