Announcing... Love & Sequins: Making Magic Happen!

[ 23 March 2009 ]

Love & Sequins

If I could embed a marching band right here, I would. This is a GRAND ANNOUNCEMENT! I have been squirming in my seat for ages waiting to tell you about this, & finally, it’s time! This is the biggest thing I’ve done since the launch of iCiNG itself, & I’m so amped!

I’d like to introduce you to my new baby, Love & Sequins: Making Magic Happen, a super-deluxe addition to the daily iCiNG we all know & love. It’s a monthly exploration & adventure delivered in podcast format, perfect for hunkering down to in your favourite place with a pair of beloved headphones.

I’m so excited about putting this together, & I can’t wait to share it with you! So what can you expect? Every month for the next 12 months I’ll be exploring various topics in lots of depth — an entire HOUR of my ridiculous accent each month! It’s a delicious mash-up of the best of my archived material, plus huge helpings of new, never-before-seen treasures. Some of you know this already, & some of you don’t, but my Next Big Thing™ is a book — a definitive guide to living the iCiNG way. This is your chance to get the mega-early scoop, because an enormous portion of what will be covered is material written specifically for that. Yum yum!

Love & Sequins

I’ve been writing feature-length articles for iCiNG for over two years now, but I want to start getting more in-depth. This is my opportunity to do that — to go deeper & expand more — & I have so much to say!

What will I be talking about? Love! Style! Music! Creating your dream life! Sex! Travel! Entrepreneurship! Fashion! Metro-spirituality! Relationships! You’ll learn an arsenal of secrets to keeping a relationship fabulous, be given tips on how to start your own business, & find out how to be a better lover. We’ll discover your passions & create a grand, glorious plan for living your dreams, as well as talking about fun things like money, shoes, & travel. I’ll let you in on the personal exercises I use for visualisation, staying motivated & learning how to use astrology in your daily life. I’ll be interviewing amazing people & sharing my most exciting discoveries. It’s a combination of my all-time sweetest tips & tricks — like how to look picture perfect all the time, dealing with unrequited love, & escaping the world without going anywhere — with all the trimmings. Who loves ya, baby?! !

Recorded live in a handful of my favourite cities, like New York, Austin, Los Angeles & Las Vegas (yay!), each month we’ll cover a mix of subjects. & just like iCiNG, it will always be inspiring & invigorating with a view to helping spark up your love of life!

With Love & Sequins: Making Magic Happen we’ll be moving together into the fabulous fast-lane of hyper-love & miracle-making — but of course, it’s totally optional. Everything you love about iCiNG will stay the same — & free, like it’s always been!

!

Want a demo? Of course you do! Here’s a minute-long sampler with some assorted clips!

Enough teasing. Keen?! (Me toooooooo! I can’t wait to kick this off!) You can choose your own adventure because there are 3 ways of doing it.

<3 Option One: $12
Pay as you go. Only buy what you want, when you want it. I’ll send you a reminder to let you know when the latest one has been released, & you can pick it up as you go. Option one is $12 a pop.

<3 Option Two: $10
Go for the one year subscription, but pay in instalments. You’ll be billed monthly at $10 — saving you $2 a month, or $24 for the full year.

<3 Option Three: $7
Snap up the whole year for $84 (a whopping 12 hours of material!) & receive all of Love & Sequins: Making Magic Happen. Your one-off payment will help me heaps in funding the project, & by way of saying a big sparkly thank you, the price drops to $7 a month. This saves you $5 a month, or $60 annually!

The first instalment of Love & Sequins: Making Magic Happen will be released in April — yes, next month! You’ll be emailed a top secret download link as soon as it’s completed. I’ve done my very best to price this as fairly as possible — $10 is about what you pay for a mixed drink in New York City, or two mixed drinks in Austin, Texas! Ha! It’s probably less than your favourite foreign fashion magazine, & even better, no ads or tree-killin’!

You can pay instantly via Paypal right here. Click click click!

I hope you’re as excited as I am. See you on the other side!

  8. Gala, I knew you had some new great magical trick up your sleeve but this is beyond what I had expected!

I’m well impressed with the way you keep on re-inventing yourself and finding new ways of achiving hyper-love for everyone, very impressive entraprenuershipping and love spreading!

Also glad to hear that the links will be available even after the actual issue date… My countrys exchange rate with the US is horrible right now.

Hyper-love right back at you darling!

  24. I knew there was a reason I bought my adorable felt bunny piggy bank last week. My spidey (or perhaps bunny) sense was tingling that something super fantastic was in the works that I’d want to get and I think I just found it! Bunnycash you’re hopping straight on over to Gala’s pocket when I decide the exchange rate is sitting reasonably hehe.

As a complete aside, I emailed you a while back about your postal address for when you got settled in the US. Is that far away from happening, or have you got some more exciting travel plans yet to happen? :)

    xx

  25. YESSSS YES FREAKING YES! Best plan EVER!
I don’t think I’ll be able to afford it, D:
But I WILL BE in line for that book! (the prices are PERFECT and not too high at ALL, I just can’t spend right now!)

You should come to Kansas City, please. I know its lame, believe me, I know. But there are enough really cool people, I know a couple hundred AT LEAST that would come see you. Please?

    SO PUMPED FOR THIS PLAN.

  70. Gala,

I don’t know if this is an idea you would consider, but is there any way you could maybe do a 30-minute podcast sample?

I don’t want to seem rude, because I think you are fabulous, but I would like an actual chunk of material that I could review and decide if this is something I would for sure be into every month, in addition to reading iCiNG. A minute just doesn’t do it for me. I feel rude saying that, because I know you will be putting a lot of hard work & energy & talent into this project. I just feel that I need to know more and get a feel for it.

Also, a lot of people seem to not have money to spend on the podcasts, but maybe if you did the 30-minute podcast people might be more into purchasing it?

I don’t know. Either way I will continue reading! And the prospect of a book is amazing and I know that you can & will do it!

    <3 Crystal · Mar 23, 04:05 PM · #
  71. Hi Gala,

I think this is a great idea to put out there — the book as well as the podcasts. Just wondering though if your price might be a tad high; I realize that a lot of work goes into making the podcast, and I have no idea how much it costs to distribute… also I have never paid for a podcast before, or encountered ones that charge a fee, so can’t say how this price compares to others. But what if you lowered the price so more people could afford it?

Or — even better — make it by donation, pay-what-you-can?

The latter might be a nice gesture of goodwill for your audience, and will allow people with less money access to your podcasts. I bet just the gesture will earn you more than would pricing it out of range — i.e. more people will purchase, and you may find that the income will average out better than you’d planned with the current pricing system as people with more money will be inclined to donate more.

    Just a suggestion… good luck!

    <3 betatest · Mar 23, 04:46 PM · #
  72. I’m so excited for you :) Bummed because I can’t really afford it but yay for new ventures and cool names :)

    <3 dynamitechar · Mar 23, 04:52 PM · #
  73. Yay that’s fabulous! Shame I have literally no money at the moment..I will definitely have to purchase at least one in the future! xxxxxxxxx

    <3 Becky · Mar 23, 05:02 PM · #
  74. I agree with betatest and Crystal. The pricing is out of range, in this economy. The donation/pay-what-you-can seems to be a good concept. I am looking forward to the book, though!

    <3 phy · Mar 23, 05:03 PM · #
  75. Gala, quick question…say I don’t buy the first or first & second podcasts, and then I decide that I want to have the whole year subscription. Would I be able to download the old ones without paying extra, or would the subscription start off from the most recent unreleased podcast?

    <3 Valerie · Mar 23, 05:07 PM · #
  76. My sweet kittens, thank you for all your feedback & support & encouragement! This is a really interesting process because I’ve never done anything like this before, so thank you for making these first steps with me!

Valerie — If you go for Option Three at any point (even in August or November) you can download all of the ones which came before :>

    <3 Gala · Mar 23, 05:13 PM · #
  77. Gosh, this sounds brilliant! But I cannot wait for an actual book – just imagine the lovely sparkly booklaunch!

    <3 penelope · Mar 23, 05:31 PM · #
  78. I thought you must have be doing something new as icing was a bit quiet but.. I was interested until I got to the $12 etc..? I’m one of the “no money” for pod casts crew..sorry(?). Good luck though

    <3 Rascat · Mar 23, 07:15 PM · #
  79. Oh oh oh! Inspired idea!

Not sure if this would work as people may find it a bit unfair BUT...

You could release the podcast and have it free for say…three days…so that us poor moneyless souls can get it too and at the end you could say something like ‘if you enjoy please please please donate something by going to (address here)’. after 3 days you could close it for free and have it available for a fixed fee. i realise this may be troublesome for some people who can’t get on their computer often enough but if you sent out emails a couple of days before?

Not sure if that would work but just a suggestion.

    <3 Kati · Mar 23, 08:24 PM · #
  80. Dear Miss Darling,

You are such an icon and an inspiration, that this progression into the podcast realm to give us all a live monthy dose of love is such a beautiful and kind thing! You make ‘girl-power’ a way more believable and awesome thing to take part in than any corny 90’s girlband ever did!
Cant wait for the book and the podcasts!
    Thank you thank you !!!

Anyway, thrilled for you and your amazing entrepreneurship! I’m always inspired by you.
As for me, funds are tight for this full time student / full time wage slave. I’ll hold out for the book, but mad-love and congrats to you for your new endeavor!
    XOXO

  84. I had a super-psychic feeling that you would be writing a book soon. Congrats on taking the plunge!

  85. SO excited about the book. How very Carrie Bradshaw of you! I can imagine that it’ll be the perfect thing to buy for a friend’s birthday. Gosh. I cannot wait!

  86. How exciting!! =D
All signed up for #2, though I must remember to top up my Paypal so future installments go through!!

  87. $12 for ONE HOUR of content?!
    yeah, no, thx.

    <3 luna · Mar 24, 02:56 AM · #
  88. the noise at the start of the sample reminds me of those childhood audio books “when you hear the chimes it’s time to turn the page”
hehe – tres cuteness and fond nostalgia.

i do have to emphasize with luna re: $$ though. $12 USD.. $25AU for one hour.. digital content. Especially when you yourself say some of the content will be previous blogs recycled into ‘em. I’d love to donate some cash but that amount feels steep. None-the-less, I wish you all the best – You’re doing what you love and able to sustaining yourself from it so mad props. ;p

Look forward to the book. Something tangible and beautiful I’m willing to fork over some moolah for.

    <3 Eva Wiggleh · Mar 24, 03:21 AM · #
  89. I agree with Eva Wiggleh completely – you said back at the early days of icing that you’d love to do a book (after u did an e-book) & i have loved that idea but wow it’s $25AU & even more NZ$...

i used to print out my fave blogs from iCiNG & made a folder filled with stuff from here! so i could enjoy it at home too (only had a computer & printer at work then..!)

    :) nostalgia!

    <3 Natasja · Mar 24, 03:53 AM · #
  90. Interesting to note people’s sense of entitlement here- if you can’t afford it, tough luck!

Gala is offering a product (an amazing one no doubt), one that she would have obviously put some work into and has some value. She’s perfectly entitled to charge for it. I agree that $12 is costly if you don’t have job/ work but that doesn’t mean the product isnt worth that much. Again, tough luck!

You wouldn’t dare of asking a great book, car or sandwich for free- why is this any different? It’s not.

    <3 Ash · Mar 24, 06:58 AM · #
  91. You’re probably already going to do something like this, but I think some people would be more likely to spend the money on it if they read a positive, unbiased review from a blogger or two.

Obviously I don’t mean myself (just need to make it clear I’m not trying to fish for freebies or anything – my readership’s nowhere near big enough for it to be worth your while and I’ll probably end up buying it and reviewing it in some way anyway!) but I think since it is slightly pricey for a podcast (though I’ve no doubt it will be worth every penny), a positive review from a blogger might sway a few of the people who were unsure because of the price.

    <3 Vixel · Mar 24, 07:52 AM · #
  92. Ash — I’m sure Gala appreciates the honest feedback on the price — if it works out that nobody’s buying it because they find the price too steep, then she’ll be doing all that work for nothing. If, on the other hand, more people can afford to buy it, then she will actually make more money. It’s win/win. :)

    <3 betatest · Mar 24, 07:55 AM · #
  93. I think, in a lot of ways, there’s no rush. When each instalment goes live, I’ll post about it with a link to buy/download it. The plan is to make it so INCREDIBLY AWESOME that the comments from people who’ve listened to it will encourage others to take the plunge! Hee.

    <3 Gala · Mar 24, 08:10 AM · #
  94. Also, Vixel, that’s a great idea, thank you so much!

  96. I won’t be buying it, but I just thought I’d say congrats on coming so far! A book and a big enough following to pull something like this off! It’s very, very inspiring and I hope it all goes well for you.

    <3 Oxyjenn · Mar 24, 04:37 PM · #
  99. It’s probably already been said, but who the heck can afford to buy a $12/hr podcast during this recession? An impossible dream! I think you would probably get more listeners if the price was a bit more reasonable. I love and adore you, Gala, but there’s little chance that I’ll ever be able to listen to Love & Sequins.

    <3 Lauren · Mar 24, 04:44 PM · #
  100. This is really exciting, but bleh, I’m broke.

On another note, your “weird accent” is a little bit like mine, which I think is really neat. I’m a Kiwi girl but I lived in Canada for half my life and had to adjust a little so people would actually understand me, lol.

    <3 Sinead · Mar 24, 05:12 PM · #
  101. Congrats Miss D!

A book deal sounds interesting! I’ve never found the time to listen to an actual podcast (Do people pay for those like subscriptions? I have no clue! haha), but something I could sit down and focus on reading would be ultra swank.

Can’t wait to see what sort of inspiring tricks you’ve got up your sleeve! Luck!!

    Bisous.

    <3 Birdie · Mar 24, 05:13 PM · #
  102. Well Gala… you’re certainly worth the money. I will get my dose of Gala next time I have a bit of extra money. You’ve been bringing so much positivity and energy into people’s lives for free for so long that an extra $12 USD is too little to pay me thinks. I need my Gala!

    <3 amelia arsenic · Mar 24, 05:49 PM · #
  103. gala, this looks fabulous!! could you please tell me what song is playing in the background during the sample? i liiiiike it.

  104. I had a dream about 2 weeks ago that I came onto icing and it would only let you on if you payed, well the dream was half right lol.
It does seem expensive to me but i think EVERYTHING is expensive, I’m a student, I won’t be buying.
Yes there’s a recession, but some people still manage to buy expensive things, there will always be some people who aren’t broke. Maybe some are broke but are so depressed about it and need Galas help, so they may pay.
It’s sad a lot of people won’t be able to hear them but i totally understand why you are doing it, and some people think it’s unfair, but you have provided so much for free so if there is a way to make money, i don’t blame you, all the best x

    <3 Shauna · Mar 24, 08:33 PM · #
  105. Why the dollar has to be so high in Brazil right now? But if I manage to use my savings super power that sometimes arise this will be one of the first things I’ll buy.

    <3 Julia · Mar 24, 08:55 PM · #
  106. Wow, I’m seriously amazed by all of the creative ways you’ve been able to turn doing what you love into a full-time job. And I can’t wait for the book release…it will surely be beautiful and inspirational. Being poor and a student, I don’t think I can afford any of the options yet but is there a deadline for doing option 3 (perhaps a very sparkly graduation present would be possible)? I believe you told Valerie that you could do the $7 payment at any time so I’m sorry if this is redundant but I just wanted to make sure. Also, any clue what your first topic will be?

    <3 Marni · Mar 24, 11:48 PM · #
  107. Gala, I love your site and I wish you all the best with Love & Sequins, but I have to agree with some other comments that even $7 per podcast too expensive. Consider how much digital music costs and everything that goes into an artist creating music vs. an hour of someone talking or interviewing on a podcast. I just don’t think the price matches up with that kind of product.

    <3 Shannon · Mar 25, 09:19 AM · #
  108. I wish you would make a statement about the prices you have posted & your reasoning for them. Maybe that would give people more insight into why those prices are set in stone and how you came up with them?

    <3 anon. · Mar 25, 12:55 PM · #
  109. Not to beat a dead horse Gala, but I too feel inclined to tell you that I will probably never get the chance to hear Love and Sequins. It seems it’s simply unaffordable for a good part of your fanbase (myself included). You’re an amazing writer and truly inspiring; this isn’t a question of worth, but rather of practicality.
Best of luck with the project.

    <3 miss morgan potts · Mar 25, 02:37 PM · #
  110. This seems like such a lovely idea!

I have a question though. If you start off with plan 2 paying $10 a month and then fall in love with the podcast so much that you want to go on and plunk down $84 for a year, can you do that?

    <3 Pink Lightning · Mar 25, 05:50 PM · #

  114. gala, i would love so much to listen to your podcast but both my parents have just lost their jobs & we can barely even afford food anymore, let alone things like this. i really wish you would reconsider the pricing or maybe put advertisements or something into the show? i feel really hurt in a way that you wouldn’t even think about your fans who are really suffering atm.

  116. I will be honest and say I think the prices are a bit ridiculous… I love your content, Gala, and would be interested in hearing your podcasts but when it comes down to it, I could spend $2 downloading an hour long episode of my favorite tv show, or $12 downloading your podcast… I know what I’d end up choosing.

    <3 Polly · Mar 27, 08:22 PM · #
  117. Hello relatively poor people, I need to tell you something very important, and it is this: Your life is still beautiful, even if you have to use tinfoil and copy paper to crown it.

    <3 Anne · Mar 27, 11:18 PM · #
  118. i don’t comment here very often, but judging from the plethora of complaints above re: the price, simple economics would state that you could probably make a lot more money doing this by charging less. it’s not like it would cost you significantly more in time or money if two thousand people buy it instead of two hundred, as digital content doesn’t really have much of a production cost per unit, besides the original temporal and financial investment to make it in the first place. but if you were to lower the price enough that you could attract more of your fans, you could make a whole lot more with this. i mean, if you have a hundred people willing to pay an average of $10 per episode, you make $1000 for that episode. but if you have a thousand people willing to pay $2 per episode, you make $2000, and your content gets spread to ten times the number of people, and the more the merrier, right? the more people that listen to it, the more people tell their friends about it, and blog about it, and the more paying listeners you get!

i know this is like a week late, but maybe you could do a poll asking how much people would be willing to pay for something like this? that kind of market research would help you to maximize your profit on this venture.

  119. hi!
I think this is an amazing idea is it just in US dollars as I come from England, and this may be a stupid quetion but would it still work with the whole paypal thing? Would I need to know how much, say for instance $10 is in pound coins? But am I the only person who is thinking this a good price as I imagine it took a lot of time and effort for these podcasts and im sure they would be 100% worth the money :) Fabulous idea and sooo excited for the book, will soo be buying it! you are an inspiration Gala :)xxx

  122. Not to be rude but its obvious you’re ignoring the comments from us who are either asking about the price or cant afford it, so I was wondering are our views going to be addressed or….?
(I cant phrase the rest in a positive light)

    <3 K · Apr 5, 12:16 AM · #
  123. K — I’m not ignoring them, just haven’t had anything to say about it! I set the price based on a combination of what other audio programs online go for & how much work I’m putting into it. All the people who commented saying they couldn’t afford it or it was too expensive who left their email addresses can expect to hear from me when the first instalment goes live, ‘cause I have a plan/idea which might make them (you) happy! Hope this answers your question :>

    <3 Gala · Apr 5, 12:26 AM · #

    <3 smallpaperbird · Apr 6, 03:49 PM · #
  126. I’m afraid I’m another who just can’t afford it! I do agree with a previous commenter that a longer sample would be a great idea though, if I could buy it I’d wait for a longer sample and for reviews to be published. It is difficult to tell from only a minute what the podcast will actually be like. I’m sure the writing will be great but I’m curious about structure, whether I could concentrate on listening to it for that long etc.

    <3 Lady Julianne le Fay · Apr 7, 06:15 AM · #
  127. Gala, just so you know! The thing that puts me off is that you don’t bother to say that it’s in US Dollars!

Given that you are from NZ / Australia and that’s where a lot of us are from as well, it would be nice if you acknowledged that not everyone is from the United States by mentioning that it’s USD.. :)

  128. kitten` — Aw! I’m sorry. That’s what I get for posting about it at like… 2am. Haha. I’m also so, so, so accustomed to seeing prices online only ever in US $ that I do the conversion instantly these days. Forget that not everyone does that! ;D
