Beloved Aesthetics

Recently on one of my favourite Livejournal style communities, someone posted asking people what they thought was the least attractive look. Of course, it quickly turned nasty. There was a small backlash, with one person replying “Bad attitudes” (bravo!). But other than that, there was page upon page of people bitching. It was a true yawnfest.

Being negative is boring & pointless. It doesn’t enhance your life in any way. If we can learn to focus on the positive things as much as possible, our lives improve immensely.

In keeping with that, I thought I’d ask you all about your favourite looks on other people. Do you love girls with long red hair, or curvy women in jeans & heels? Do you have a weakness for tattooed Japanese boys, or for men in impeccable suits?

I’ll start!
I really adore girls with purposefully messed hair — teased hair, big fluffy dreadlocks or crazy manes. I love perfectly sleek bobs. I do, in fact, have a secret weakness for tattooed Japanese boys (especially if they also have stretched ears). I am huge on rolled-up shirt sleeves, regardless of sex. I girls in long fur coats & boys wearing pocket squares. I love unusual eyewear & vintage mini-dresses. I totally admire anyone who pulls off a look from a past era consistently — I don’t know how you do it, but I salute you! I cherish long sleeves which only show the ends of fingers. I flip my wig over men’s watches on women’s wrists. I think the world of anyone who wears a hat or who can rock a turban. & I want to smooch people who really look after their shoes.

I love to see curvy girls in dresses with high heels, but my favourite is to see an older woman (or man) with a purple rinse through their hair. They are getting rarer as the years go on but when I do see one it makes me darn happy.

I love layers! I don’t know how people pull hem off (haven’t got round to reading that article yet!) I heart waistoats too, so simple and stylish. I love wearing the colours pink, white and black. I love skinny jeans and ballet pumps!

I love curvy girls with amazing smiles. I love layers, on guys and girls. I love New Rock Boots! I Love how Gala Darling dresses :P I LOVE dreadlocks- one day I will start fussing and just do my own! I adore scarves (neck and head)- all year round! I love purple eyeliner, and guys who dress well- there seems to be no end of well dressed boys in England, so I’m having a wee perve fest!

i love love love anyone who can make a hoodie interesting. i have an american apparel hoodie in bright purple and it jazzes up my wardrobe like you wouldn’t believe!

colourful outerwear is the best: i have a bright pink trenchcoat from coach that i adore, i got it super cheap, too! life is too short to only wear plain outerwear.

I like girls with short, cropped hair and too much kohl. I like girls with white hair and girls with black hair. I like girls in fedoras. I like girls with half moon glasses. I like girls with teased, overdone, oversized hair. I like my girls as delicate and thin as I like my boys (and I don’t like boobs). I like girls who carry their shopping basket in the crook of their arm. I like girls who always wear heels, no matter the walk. I like girls who powder their faces white and comb their lashes. I like girls who wear sunhats. I like girls with delicate cheekbones and square jaws. I like girls with heavy bangles, unique and vintage. I like girls who paint their toenails. I like girls who dance as they walk. I like girls who wear neon eyeshadow (black too) under their eyes. I like girls who only wear white after labor day. I like architectural haircuts. I like girls who dye their hair pale in the winter and dark in the summer. I like girls with stretched earlobes. I like girls who wear bright-but-not-neon colors. I like girls in riding boots. I like girls who always have a delicious book in their hand. I like girls who smile at jokes only they get. I like girls whose colors match. I like girls with long legs clad in stockings. I like girls who rarely if ever go bare-legged, and who wear little dresses.

I like accents regardless. I like long-armed sweaters. I like people who read while they walk down the sidewalk. I like people on vintage bicycles. I like people who are happy. I like people who have a whole nother side to them they’re just waiting to tell you about if you’re like them too. I like people who powder their hair. I like people who wear sovereign rings. I like people who fake accents and admit to their falsity with a wave and a laugh. I like people who walk along the tops of fences. I like nautical accents and the wearing of boots that look incredibly uncomfortable. I like people with clean shined shoes. I like people who smell like vanilla.

I LOVE anyone with unnatural hair dye. :D Especially pink (bonus points if they’re a boy!) or a really deep blue.
I love people who can pull off ridiculously high boots – like, so high they’re above knee length!
I love black and white stripy long socks.
I love girls who wear those necklaces with a big chunky heart on them. Even more if it’s got a little clock in it, hehe!
I love the smell of aftershave and men’s deoderant.
I love people who wear those belts with led light scrollies attached.
I love girls who can wear those big off-the-shoulder silver sparkly dresses.

It’s so important to focus on the good, isn’t it, Gala? When these kind of discussions degenerate into the gutter, it’s depressing for all concerned. Well done for deciding to rise above it all and promote positivity. There needs to more like you in the blogosphere! For my own part I love the 1920s look: Headbands, Flapper Girls, Beaded Garments, Chic Bobs with Fringes, Uber-Wide Leg Trousers. Anything that looks as though it could have been worn by any of the Picasso set as they holidayed on the Riviera.

I love the style of people who look relaxed and effortless yet still well put together. A beachy relaxed sort of hippy style, long blond curly hair. Although that is only during summer. During the colder months I love black, and double breasted coats and choppy haircuts and big jewellery and boots.

I find that the men I tend to go for these days are so diverse from one another that i cannot possibly divulge in what I find attractive on the male figure; however I thought I’d throw in my ten-pence worth (English, I do apologise) regarding what I find absolutely threateningly gorgeous on the female form;

- women/girls that can delicately grasp a cigarette holder in their fingers and pull it off without looking like a curb crawler.

- masculine clothes on a curvy frame; especially high-waisted trousers with a crisp white shirt tucked in. Divine.

- curls; Marilyn Monroe’s hairstyle is the epitome of beauty.

- the elfin look – a little blonde pixie crop on a petite-framed lady can look so vulnerable and helpless.

I heart twiggy style haircuts on girls with big eyes, boys who wear eyeliner and have floppy hair and moodiness and anyone who wears a well cut suit – a tailored suit, boy or girl.

I heart 50s housewife style with floral aan twin set and pearls and court heels and wallpaper and puffed short sleeves.

I heart 20s flapper girls with cigarette holders and dark glossy bobs and ribbons around their heads.

I heart anyone who wears cameos, t-shirts with 80s cartoon characters on them, saris, blazers or combat boots.

I heart androgyny, but I also heart really macho stubbly men with muscles rippling underneath business shirts with the sleeves rolled up or girls who cover themselves from head to toe so all you can see in kohl-rimmed eyes.

I heart hippy chics with flowy skirts and anklets wih bells on them, henna tattooes and furry vests.

I heart ballet girls, with leotards and anything wrap around and pink high laced ballet shoes.

I heart people who have tattooes and piercings that mean someting and are not just accessories. Same with jewelery – I like accessories that have stories.

And I love love love people who carry notebooks around and stop to scribble in them frequently.

I love it when guys and girls pull off a geeky/preppy outfit without looking overdone and with just a touch of cool.

Like, I have this glasses-wearing professor who wears a crisp white shirt, sleeves scrunched up to reveal forearms, over jeans and a studded leather belt. Its preppy meets punk rock, and its a great look :)

Sixties style – short hair, eyeliner, short dresses, swing coats and jackets, brocade and jacquard daywear
Bows on everything – headbands, tops, backs of dresses – especially if the bow is a contrasting colour to the rest of the dress.
Anything in yellow – especially a sunshine-y shade of yellow. I bought a yellow pashmina at the airport recently – one of the best purchases I made recently – it goes with everything, especially navy.
Boys who miz quirky with prep-school style. Like Chuck in the Gossip Girls.
Women who rock red hair and pale skin – GORGEOUS.

I absolutely adore the Red Hats Society. Seeing older women looking stylish in elaborate hats and purple dresses makes me happy, it makes me see that you don’t have to be young to look fabulous. Actually I love the granny opera chic too. There’s simply something lively and radiant about an older woman dressed well.

I also love seeing curvy women in flared skirts and either flats or chunky cabaret high heels, and those blouses that tie on the side, a bit like a kimono. Actually any woman in a flared or gypsy skirt. Skirts are so feminine.

Long healthy-looking hair on a guy looks great, it makes me want to play with it.

I love pretty much anything I see in the Japanese magazine Fruits. But I happen to be biaised toward Japanese culture.

Guys- nerds. It’s all I’ve ever dated. Into comic books and super heroes? Then you’re probably the one for me. I like boys who stray from the “normal” twenty-something-guy uniform of jeans and a tshirt. I like guys that wear suits for “no particular reason”. Boys who sew are also really cute.

I love girls with short WHITE hair. I also love when girls have long long messy layers in natural brown or dirty blonde. I think it is because I miss having super long hair (it is now just past my shoulders). Girls who have way better vintage wardrobes than me- I am so jealous. Girls who wear little or no makeup. Straight bangs have been really appealing to me lately, too. When girls show off their knee high boots (over jeans or with a skirt) and not hide them under pants.

I also have an attraction to people who ride bicycles and eat vegan. I don’t do either, by a long shot, but I hope to start living a healthier, more conscious lifestyle, and I find these people inspiring. Unnatural hair colors are amazing. And people who can pull off dreadlocks. Cute glasses- because I have poor eyesight and have always worn frames that were a bit different. So I’m glad that this is a bit of a trend right now. People who “dress up” to go to class also make me smile, because I could never let myself go to class (or even out of the house) in sweatpants or pajamas.

I love girls dressed in a monocromatic scheme, specially with bright-80s colors. Big sunglasses, men with striped shirts (like the Godfather xD), men with worn jeans, vintage dresses, red-heads girls (weird in my country), sleek afroamerican girls with big ‘fros, skirts full of patterns or appliques, guys that look like rock-stars, beards (I think that was the first reason I started to like my bf in the first place xD), pale and beautiful girls with blue hair, cowboy boots with style…

I love smiles on everyone. I love fairy wings and pirate hats. I love vibrant tights. I love unique hair – long, short, coloured or not, messy or sleek as long as the owner loves it. I especially love people with dreadlocks or curls. I love natural redheads. I love primary colours, clean lines, extravagent patterns, sumptuous fabrics. I love the way children throw on the clothes they love and accessorise with shiny things and a great big grin.

I love people who are happy. People who have a cheeky smile and eyes that sparkle. People who can always recommend the perfect book. I love skirts and dresses, flowers in hair and jewels on faces. I love awesome shoes. I love oversize glasses and jumpers. I love people who smile at things only they understand. I love people who dance. And people who are n’t afraid to have fun or throw themselves into things. I love people with their natural skintone.

I love people who are n’t afraid to be positive and people with a fantastic personality which shines through everything.

I love chunky bracelets or wrapped bandanas over teeny tiny wrists, and women who can be chubby and make it look beautiful, and a boy who looks good in aviators. these days i am absolutely LOVING anyone who can pull off the steampunk style. steampunk makes me giggly and weak in the knees and i absolutely crumple in awe and envy. in an effort to join in, i have a bought a vintage brown leather long trench coat, brown rockwood boots, and i’m in the market for a good pair of jodhpurs and a brown dressage coat and perhaps a well fitting waistcoat. help!

and finally i am attracted to anyone, girl or boy, who wears the well-fitting-but-loose-fitted-plaid-flannel-shirt… with the sleeves rolled up to just under the elbow. i die.

These are the aesthetics that make me salivate:

- Dyed hair. I love dying my own hair so when I see someone with hair that is either black, pink, dark red, plum, blue or violet I’m automatically in love.

- Victoriana men and women. I think that style of dress is so beautiful, dark, and romantic.

- Curvy/full-figured women in bootcut jeans or pencil skirts with some very sexy heels.

- Men with facial hair or without. I think both is sexy.

- Eccentricities that are subtle (dyed hair is not an eccentricity to me…it seems normal now).

- Big goofy smiles, smug looking profiles, and a really nice nose on men. I’m particularly drawn to rail-thin men. When it comes to women I love a curvy woman and if she’s dressed like Marlene Dietrich then I’m all hers.

Actually there are a lot things I love on other people because I love to people watch and everyone has something that I love.

I love people who look totally at ease with themselves, and are comfortable in their own skins. That to me in insanely sexy.

But more specifically, I like girls with short hair (like my twin sister, who sometimes shaves it all off), and guys with long (but well kept) hair. Anyone with well tailored outfits with a savvy personality to pull it off I immediately revere. Those who wear incredible outfits that make me look again I definitely respect and covet.

But I like most the people who have the strength to be who they are, dress how they like, and smile as often as possible regardless of the accepted or recent fashions and trends. I think those people are incredibly brave and exciting.

I love amazingly healthy skin. I always wonder how they do it. I love women who wear so many colors, but they all look so interesting a vibrant together. I have a soft spot for men with dark hair and blue eyes and I love that slouchy “I like to read” look. I think minimalist makeup is amazing, as is super duper dramatic out-of-this-world makeup. Like colored eyebrows. I admire people who color their eyebrows wild colors. I am impressed with women who can walk miles in high heels, and women who managed to find the perfect pair of flats. I think healthy, groomed nails are incredible. I love people who have that light walk of confidence in them. I think smiles and bright eyes make anyone look good, no matter what they’re wearing.

You know I said a billion things and then deleted them because I figured it’d be more of value to say what I love most. I think overall I love people who look cultured. Who seem to take a little bit of various things and make it their own.

There was a man I saw in the cafe on Morehouse’s campus who just epitomized it to me. He had sorta paleish skin, green freckled eyes and that sorta curly honey hair in an afro that only mixed kids get. He was wearing a well tailored black suit but the cuffs of his shirt were slightly ruffled, the kind of thing you see on Prince. He had many rings (silver, black, peridot) and 3 to 4 lines of text wrapped around his wrist in a beautiful flowy script.

I mean, he was a bunch of opposites all pushed in together. He’d taken from black culture, alt culture, professionalism, and just mixed it together. He was beautiful. Yes, I did stare.

I’m pretty confident that anyone will look good if they KNOW they look good (which 90% of the time, they do). Personally, I love people who dress anachronistically and just own it.

Long hair is beautiful, but I titter inside over short styles that rock. Like when Victoria came out with her MAJOR haircut… Swoon.

I also love, love, love girls who wear heels every day, every where, without ANY shame. I think that’s probably the dreamiest thing ever. A woman who’s damn proud to be a woman and will fight crime and kick ass without batting a falsie. Melt.

I love redheads to the point of fetishism. I LOVE androgyny! I love large, sensual women and spiky, irritable-looking boys (even if I don’t really like talking to the latter because they are inevitable spiky and irritable). I love preppiness.

I really love those dirty-looking angry 16-year-old boys with long hair that’s messy because they really never brush it, not ‘cause they’re going for That Look, who are always in angry punk bands and fight-dancing and sticking their jaws out at everyone.

I love unpretentiousness infashion and I love effortlessness. I especially love those people who maintain their own style in the face of greatest adversity, with no apologies. I love practicality while remaining stylish!

Yeah, I thought that blackcigarette post on LJ got nasty really quick. But the person who said that bad attitudes were unattractive wasn’t trying to talk about the original poster in a sneaky way…she just meant that people who have nasty attitudes while wearing a cool outfit kill the look.

And that’s why I just like confidence and originality – they’re two of the the few pieces of a wardrobe that are always in season.

- primarily black outfits accented with bright, bright colors (chartreuse tights, a bright red scarf, anything!) – backseamed and/or thigh-high stockings – well-tailored suits on anyone, male or female – ribbons tied in hair or around necks – anything inspired by the Victorian era. Mmm, steampunk. – unusual necklines or hems – red and black. These two colours took over my wardrobe for years. It made things a little monotonous, but everything matched and I looked so polished! – jewelry with locks on. It’s so subtly suggestive. – brightly colored hair – people dressed in very sleek, classic clothing but with visible tattoos, piercings, or crazy hair. Pearls + piercings = win – on that note, lip piercings. I’d look silly all pierced up, but I envy those who can carry it off. – androgyny; specifically, girls with short hair combed like men’s hairstyles from previous eras, and boys in makeup or nail polish. – red lipstick worn with confidence – people who are always wearing the perfect underwear – clothing with long lines – fedoras and other neat hats – ballet slippers – stompy boots, especially when incongruously paired with a more delicate, feminine outfit – Cool coats. Trench coats, peacoats, colorful raincoats . . . I have a bright green faux fur coat I’m positively obsessed with right now.

Why does it make me so sad that people are referring to what they find attractive in terms of weight? So many people are commenting on thinness vs. ‘curviness’ and girls who “dress for their size”. How about dressing for your HAPPINESS?

I’m 5’10” and about 155 lb. on a good day. I am by no means thin— And I wear or embody a lot of things on these lists (I’m a fairy-tale dresser with blonde and navy blue hair, I’ve got a surplus of tattoos, skinny jeans, uniforms, jewelry blah blah blah) but is it all the same kind of ‘good’ if a chubby girl like me is doing it? Probably not, to some of these people.

I know that when I flip styles and go to class in Uggs and an AA pullover, the preppy girls look at me like I’ve lost my mind. Because I’m not 5’4” and 100 lb, the look doesn’t quite fit. But you know, I’d rather be happy where I am right now than miserable at 104 lb, which is where I was at fourteen years old.

The thing I value most in people, the trend I find most attractive, is SELFLESSNESS. Show me what you do to improve your surroundings and spread an unending, boundariless, WEIGHTLESS love.

Women especially need to stop encouraging the mentality that extreme thinness is ‘trendy’ or ‘the best thing.’ That type of behaviour is triggering and bothersome, and there’s no need for it.

Anything that messes with conventional gender stereotypes.

I love love love it when women dress to accentuate what society would deem ‘flaws’. e.g. short girls wearing flats, curvy girls in horizontal stripes. The body should be embraced and celebrated. We shouldn’t waste our time trying to hide our so called imperfections. I’m a curvy girl (australian size 12). I’m sick of seeing fashion magazines that tell me I should dress in certain ways to hide this. You will not separate me from my skinny jeans until I’m dead and burried :)

Seeing as I agree with almost everything here, I think I’m going to print off this list and put it somewhere where I can see it, if that’s alright :)

At the moment, my beloved aesthetics include but are not limited to:
1940’s wiggle dresses, red gloves, mia farrow haircuts ala rosemary’s baby (i am getting one soon), wearing dollhouse miniatures, wearing birds, clear-eyed boys eating cake, boys who play unexpected instruments (how i long for a harpist!), girls who wear gingham and delve into melville or tolstoy or other large and difficult tomes on public transport, long and sticky eyelashes on either sex, quivering lips – also on either sex, 1950s floral house dresses countered by hermes cuffs with serious hardware + everything that has already been said.

Super-subtle, almost-un-placeable accents, like from people who moved from another country when they were nine years old.

Boys in glasses. Girls too, actually.

1960s mod aesthetic, girls with hair and makeup that looks taken from Russ Meyer movies.

People with full lips who don’t wear lipstick, they just gloss them a bit so they look clean and shiny. Thin lips can wear lipstick.

Healthy eaters who bring snacks like nuts and carrots when they go out. I like seeing someone eating a green apple in public.

Quiet people who read on the trains and subways and don’t look up at anyone. (not comics or magazines, but actual books. Rare here.)

Tons of eye makeup and liner on girls if they do it right.

Super clean guys without stiff hair. Slim guys. I mostly find Asian guys physically attractive, but that really depends.

A sense of humor, style and personality matter the most to me and lack of any of these make a really beautiful person lose all appeal. Guys with a certain feature that stands out more than anything else (unusual eyes or really full lips or great cheekbones or something)

People who smile and laugh a lot. Happy people are rad.

I love really smart looking women with shirts, pencil skirts and killer heels. Looks fab, especially if se’s got nice hair too :) I love natural redheads and I wish I was one! For me it’s simple.

Anyone who is classy, charming, and elegant.

I also adore anyone {girl or boy} who wears something uncommon or weird and totally rocks it.

And boys in makeup… and corsets.

In fact, I like people in corsets in general.

And yes, I also have a thing for tattooed Japanese boys… ~~sigh~~

Women – Coco Chanel Mademoiselle and Angel perfume: when I smell it on someone, it reminds me of great times – Ballerinas’ style: not really what they wear, but how they wear it, with great posture and class – tight curls, a la Felicity when she cut it short images.starpulse.com/Photos/Pr… – expensive jeans and a simple, stylish white top with great heels, so elegant and pretty – dark, deep-red painted toe nails – big red rose placed in the hair, to the side

Men:

- Guys in vests – clean cut and well groomed – maori tattoo on one half of his body (mmm yumm)- italian shoes – quirky style… little accessories that make him stand out but aren’t too obvious (like a tattoo, or old man’s jacket or cool socks) – a silk scarf in the lapel of his jacket – 80’s sports headbands (haha – especially if he has curly hair) – an air of self confidence, and mischief in his smile

Asian boys top my list, bonus if they have earrings.

Blue eyes, hair in their face, not afraid to against the crowd.

Bondage pants with victorian style cap sleeved blouses, earrings on anyone, floaty shirts with handkerchief hems, tighter shirts and looser bottoms. Designs of mythological animals and words written in other languages.

Boys who speak french and italian (and japanese).

Tradition blended with modern. Quirky in all that they wear. Anyone who can pull off heels. LOTS of accesories. People who can wear brightly colored eyeliner. Glasses on guys.

I like sitting on a beach and watching the sunset, I like tanned boys with colored hair, sipping coffee and reading the funnies, surfing the net and playing music real loud, getting lost in imaginations, pretty, silly girly things like pink hearts in rose colored water, winning a game really quickly, having the boy I like walk past my classroom, smoke rings, long bleached hair on guys, guys with funny fashion sense who like wearing gigantic spectacles with a beanie, beautiful scents like Anna Sui, Dolly girl, large tote bags in shiny patent/faux leather and in awesome color like red and blue, winning fights that I start with anyone (and I don’t mean fist fights), colorful dresses paired with long curled lashes, wonderfully crafted novels, sitting next to people on the train who smell nice and do not fart, seeing intense blue sky in reality or on photographs, having sentimental value for happy things.

I like smart people who read good books
I like curvy girls with red curls
I like boys with scruffy hair
I like sexy rockabilly girls in red lipstick
I love love love boys in waistcoats, or who wear watches over their cardigan sleeves (*glee again*)
I like girls and boys in vintage clothing

I like boys with long, straight hair who have dimples. I like confidence. I like happy people. I like classic beauties and people who don’t wear makeup. I like girls with long, wavy, blonde hair and straight cross bangs. I like anyone in a coffee shop. I love when anyone wears cardigans. I like shiny hair, regardless of color. I like depth. I like girls with dark red hair and bright green eyes. I like anyone in purple. I like when women look like pin-up models. I like when people aren’t ashamed of their age.I like originality. I like simplicity. I like vintage. I love when people have cameras around their necks or attached constantly to their eyes. I like bright eyes. I like smiles, regardless of what their teeth look like. I like when boys look like Matthew Gray Gubler, Edward Norton, or Dustin Hoffman. I like when boys have long, white hair, as if they’re an elf off Lord of the Rings. I like nerdiness. I like people who can have a real, deep conversation. I like people with messy hair. I like undamaged hair. I like girls and boys in vnecks. I like when busty girls cover up and when they don’t. I like fair skin, I like dark skin, I like tans, I like people who don’t go outside. I saw a guy the other day that looked SO UNBELIEVEABLY awesome!
He had dyed hair that looked like it was once red but faded. Which was kinda cute.
Then he was wearing really high pants with suspenders pulled over his shoulders.. and shiny black shoes. ><

I love anyone who isnt afraid to be completely different!!
