Carousel: Week Ending 19th February 2010

[ 19 February 2010 ]

Marie Antoinette

Welcome to Friday! Here are some yummies for you…

<3 Casting Agent James Scully Can Open a Magazine and Tell You Which Models Are Taking Drugs or Throwing Up. Excuse the sensationalist title…

“It’s really sad to look at a room of 16-year-old girls who watch Lara Stone walk into a room and they all look at her and say, ‘That’s who I want to be,’ and Lara Stone looks at them and says, ‘I feel terrible about myself.’”

<3 Cult of the Living Doll in Tokyo.

<3 The Last Days of Gadjo Disko — Angel’s party in Austin, Texas. I was meant to go last year when I was in town for SXSW, but unfortunately I was unable to get there. Booooo! So sad I missed it. But the pictures sure are beautiful…

“Austin tends to be a little uptight sometimes in its party style. You know, everybody’s a little too cool to clap for the band. To see them get loose and shake it—like, “ass shaking in the streets” New Orleans-style—was something we tried to promote, and I feel like we managed to do it. ... We actively promoted that good- humored, debauchery kind of fun, and discouraged the hipster attitude. It was definitely hands-on, booty-out partying.”

<3 A Vintage Love Story. Awww!

<3 be inspired: the “special problem” of strong women looking for love.

<3 “The View” of What’s In A Name? by Dr. Oz, who I LOVE. Anyway, it is a look into the associations of names, sound symbolism, hidden meanings, etc.!

<3 Museum of Modern Tweets is so funny!

<3 SnagFilms shows documentaries, online, for nothin’. If you’re in the U.S.A you have to watch Girls Rock! It is SO GOOD. (I think they only have rights to screen it in the States, which is a shame.) But it is a super-powerful documentary about girls, self esteem, taking up physical & emotional space, feminism, & RADICAL SELF LOVE above all else! Plus the soundtrack rules.

<3 I have a lot of time for Coco Rocha.

<3 Experience Parisienne is an experiment by YSL where they send bloggers to Paris to find out what “being a French girl” is all about. It’s a cool project, have a look.

<3 Break Up Bars & Getting Even from Sticky Gooey Creamy Chewy. Yum!

“I hate the phrase “Hurt people hurt people.” I understand it. & it ‘makes sense’ but aren’t we all hurt? Don’t we all have “something”? At what point, do you decide that you’re not going to use the master’s tools? At what point do you say, I’ve been hurt, I refuse to inflict pain. I refuse to send more hurt people out into the universe. At what point do you stop the cycle? People do it. It can be done. It’s not a matter of “Your blues ain’t like mine”. We all could point to something big in our lives & say, “This is why I’m mean.” Or “this is why I made you cry because someone made me cry once.” That’s not ok. Never ok. I can’t excuse bad behaviour anymore. I can’t be ok with being hurt because someone (that wasn’t me) hurt you once. No. Nobody deserves it. You didn’t deserve to be hurt. But I sure as hell don’t deserve to pay for the people that hurt you once upon a time.”
(Bassey Ikpi)

<3 Puppy Tweets turns your dog into a Twitter hound! Would you buy this faceless, Twitter-compatible dog?

<3 You can watch the entire first episode of How To Make It In America (by the same people as Entourage) at that link. It is so good!!!

<3 Steve Pavlina writes about the benefits of working One Week On, One Week Off. I think I’m going to try this! As a self-employed person — which also means I have to whip myself into shape regularly — I’m always looking for new, more effective ways to manage my time. If I give it a shot, I’ll let you all know how it’s going. He also recently wrote How To Build A Stronger Ego. His character building ideas are great.

<3 How To Throw A Johnny Weir Party: A Stickers and Donuts Tutorial. Hahah. Fantastic.

<3 Learn to ask better questions from Harvard Business Review.

<3 How Laughter Works.

<3 10 places women want to be touched! Cute.

<3 I am a little bit obsessed with The Daily Beast’s Tweet Sheet.

<3 How To Live 100 Years from TIME. Who wouldn’t want to know this?!

<3 Lauren sent me a link to this Be Stupid campaign by Diesel. I am a fan of this campaign! “Smart critiques. Stupid creates.” Word up.

<3 But I don’t want to be an alpha-male! from MetaFilter.

<3 & further to that, Why “Nice Guys” are often such LOSERS.

<3 30 bizarre examples of defacing money!!! So brilliant. I like the Donnie Darko rabbit… Kiss is good too.

<3 Rare photos of famous people. Thanks for the link, Vixxie!

So… I went backstage at Betsey Johnson on Sunday night, & interviewed a hairdresser, a manicurist & Betsey herself! The interviews are pretty short, & unfortunately I didn’t have much time with Betsey. Her publicist was like, “ONE QUESTION” but I snuck in another one, & we were all in a rush because I was the last interviewer before the show started! I think what you see below are my first few times interviewing someone on camera?! Anyway, hope you like ‘em!

Can this be my life?!

  5. “most kids don’t have the luxury to change the names given to them by their parents” -from the view’s article

    why not? we did…

my mom got me betsey johnson tights for valentine’s day that were marked down from $30.00 to a mere $1!!!

  6. Lysacek and Plushenko were obviously gonna be gold and silver, but Weir? He skated way better than Lambiel and Chan; plus, Takahashi also fell during his first jump. He didn’t once fall, did three triple axels and took advantage of the bonus. He should’ve won bronze and everyone in the audience knew it (and expressed it in a very vocal manner).

  7. Great carousel as always! I really love being served a long list of reads before the weekend! :)

I’m also looking into the one week on, one week off approach. I think it would be a great way to improve my productivity as a student. Have a great weekend!

  9. Great carousel! I love the nice guys article… spot on! One of my closest friends just started an internship with Betsey Johnson (right before her show) and got to work with her her very first day there. Ugh!

  10. Ahh Betsey’‘s amazing and so cute :]

Lots of great links this week, thank you! :D

  11. Betsey Johnson has the best aesthetic, even though she is expensive (though it’s still attainable). I saved up for one of her bikinis and I never wear it because it is just too pretty lol!

  12. I love that decadent video and of course Betsey Johnson.
I have a book recommendation but I’m kind of reluctant because she mentions the word God and creator but it doesn’t feel religious. I am not religious at all and I benefited from this book enough to recommend it. It was written for artists but I think it can be for anyone trying to transform or love them selves more or better. The book is The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. It’s kind of like some Feary Godmother coming in and talking to you and helping you wake up parts of your spirit that in turn opens your HEART/LOVE more to yourself, your creativity, your universe.

  13. I look forward to every Friday on your blog! I am a link hound and all of these are so interesting and inspiring! I love Betsey Johnson too.

  14. I like that Diesel campaign a lot more after seeing that PDF with more of the “meaning” behind it! Originally I found it really irritating because of the way it seemingly encouraged people to “act dumb” (which reminded me of how girls are often told it’s not “cool” to show your smarts).
I think a lot of the intent got lost by seeing just a few versions of the billboards, here in NYC.

    Thanks for sharing.

  15. Cult of the living doll-I love that here, in Japan you can be anybody you want to be and live in a way where aesthetic fantasies are entirely possible and plausible, nobody calls you a fake or a try hard. I never want to leave! The make up is AMAZING by the way.

I loved the article “Why nice guys are such losers”, I think its goes the opposite way too!

  16. LOVE the video, Gala!!

  18. Delicious Carousel! I bookmarked a TON of these, notably the dollar bill art (!!!), HBR’s Learn to Ask Better Questions and the rare celebrity photos (so addicting to look at!).

I must say that, while I love Japanese street fashion, Cult of the Living Doll unnerved me slightly. It’s interesting that they care more about their looks than their relationships. And that ending quote… WHEW, sooooo not how I roll! Great article, though. I love seeing the VAST differences between cultures.

P.S. Not too sure about the Puppy Tweets! I do like that it is putting a bigger emphasis on interacting with your real pets rather than an electronic toy… somewhat. Baby steps!

  19. !!! Thank you so much! My goodness. You + Betsey Johnson = perfect.

  21. I’m glad I’m not the only one sick of the ‘but I’m a NICE GUY!’ complex.

    <3 Tegan · Feb 19, 02:24 PM · #
  22. UGH YES to that Nice Guy article. I am so sick of ‘Nice Guys’. It is such a major turnoff.

And yes Coco Rocha- I love her. Beautiful & articulate is such a hot combination.

  23. Oh how strange, the last part of my comment didn’t post!

  29. The Steve Pavlina article on ego was amazing!

Considering the name thing though by Dr. Oz, I’m sorry but how isn’t Barbara an ethnic name? Are we to assume that white, english speaking people are not an ethnic group or cannot be precieved as such?

  33. I stumbled that Heartless Bitches thing ages ago, and immediately had to resist the impulse to send it to every Nice Guy I know — quite a few I’m learning lately! February is a time for relationship drama, non? Maybe that Metafilter one needs a little attention though…

    <3 mahantas · Feb 19, 09:42 PM · #
  34. YES x 1000 to the nice guys article. Nice Guys get on my nerves like NO other.

And thanks so much for the link to Girls Rock! – I had been wanting to see it in theaters but one around me didn’t have it at the time. So now I get to watch it anyways, yay!

    <3 Michelle · Feb 19, 09:44 PM · #
  35. Oh my Lord — it never even occurred to me that nail color was so critical to completing a fashion show! Clearly I need to make sure my nails possess “unusual medium tones” and adequate “texture.” And here I’ve been wasting my life with textureless polish! ;-)

    <3 Unicorns For Socialism · Feb 19, 09:53 PM · #
  36. gah…too much goodness. loooove it. I’m also going to be on a Dr. Oz fangirl kick now, haha. Love him.

  37. I’m not 100% on the Stupid campaign. By definition stupid is not creative, stupid is lacking intellectual acuity. I’m a creative person AND I’m smart as hell. My ideas are never stupid and I think there’s a major difference between doing what the boys from Jackass do and following your heart.
None of the things they list are particularly stupid and I don’t feel that this campaign is well thought out. So maybe it is stupid.

    <3 Alex · Feb 20, 02:10 AM · #
  38. that intro pic is just so pretty. i want something like that. I love betsey johnson.

    <3 ruby · Feb 20, 08:30 AM · #
  39. Alex, I agree. I’m not into the whole anti-intellectualism thing, and I think it’s sad to see it idealised like this. It’s possible that’s not what they meant, but that’s what it comes off as.
This week’s carousel had some cool links. I read this blog every time there’s an update, but this is my first comment. Yay!
As for the Diesel campaign, Sociological Images had an interesting critique of it: contexts.org/socimages/2010/01…

    <3 Irina · Feb 20, 08:37 AM · #
  40. This is such an awesome carousel! And you’re adorable as an interviewer!
Alex and Irina I agree, the campaign is not particularly well thought out. I also feel that creativity and intelligence are mutually exclusive. And stupid does not equal creative. I think I get what they mean to say with the campaign, but it could have been formulated better.

    <3 Cristina · Feb 20, 09:48 AM · #
  41. Great Carousel! I love Mori Girl fashion, it’s becoming one of my new muses for this year. And I love that Coco post, so fierce and honest. It’s good to hear that sort of thing from the models!

    <3 Jessica · Feb 20, 12:16 PM · #
  42. I also love mori girl. I think that article really tore it down as westerners tend to do to Japanese fashion. I’m really into Lolita fashion at the moment and a while ago there was an article on Torrid that bashed it, but I noticed they hadn’t seen anything in Japan they liked besides the boring old stuff that’s in the west too. They didn’t talk about anything original. So, I guess it’s nice the Times at least took notice of some of the other Japanese fashions. I just wonder what the heck they meant by swallowtail girl. If you google that no pictures come up…

    <3 aja · Feb 20, 01:40 PM · #

  48. I’m dismayed that the Times of India article “10 Places Women Want to be Touched” makes absolutely no mention of consent. I just spent two months in India (Gujarat, Orissa and Delhi) and the amount of sexual harassment (or “Eve teasing” as it’s euphemistically called) was horrible. Two random men from the streets grabbed my face and tried to kiss me; one grabbed my thigh; one put his hands in my hair; multiple people in a crowded market grabbed my bum; one man reached between my legs while I was, ironically, filming a documentary about the global condition of women. I’m aware that the Times of India is a very conservative publication and applaud them for stepping into the realm of accepting that sexual expression is natural and healthy, but I wish this article was framed within a pro-feminist perspective rather than simply stating assumptions about what women supposedly want.

    <3 Kaeti · Feb 21, 05:30 AM · #
  49. Wow, that first portrait of Marilyn Monroe with the wind in her face is so, so beautiful and poignant.

  50. Hey Gala!
Thanks for the ‘Heartless-Bitches’ website. That Nice Guy article was pretty spot on (and reminded me of my ex :s). And the site has some really good articles about trusting your instincts and avoiding user.

    Thanks

    <3 Peppermint · Feb 22, 06:05 AM · #
  51. You probably know this already and it’s so nerve wracking when you’re put on the spot with a camera in your face interviewing someone that it’s hard to remember them but a few things I’ve learned from uni:

    - Don’t comment on what the interviewee has just said unless it’s really relevant and leads into your next question. Just saying like ‘Oh cool’ then launching into your next question sounds token and like you haven’t really listened.

    - Don’t start each question with ‘So… blah blah blah’, god this one is so hard, I used to kick myself every time I did it.

    - Have a really definite way that you’re going to end / sign off so everyone knows what’s going on. Thanking the interviewee is a good option, letting them respond and then a final word to the camera is good.

But on the whole your interviewing skills were amazing! You seemed comfortable in front of the camera. More! more! more!
