<3 From New York Magazine: How to Get Tinsley Mortimer’s Face in Just Fifteen Steps — well, if that’s something you want! There’s also a video of the Superhero Fashion exhibit at the Met, for those of you who can’t get there or just want a closer look! (I went last week, it was amazing.) & finally, an incredible apartment: “Every surface in the south-facing apartment, with the exception of the DDC couch and chairs, is reflective. “At night you can see the taxicabs in the ceiling,” says Christopher Coleman. “On the 39th floor!””

<3 Guy Kawasaki interviews Darren Rowse about blogging. Two great people rolled up into one article — bring on the applause!

<3 Trusting In The Universe by the fantastic Philip McCluskey, who is just as incredible in real life as you would expect.

<3 Rebel Romance: Sarah Jessica Parker & Chris Noth (aka Carrie Bradshaw & Mr Big) shoot for Vogue, by Annie Leibovitz. (& an accompanying article.)

<3 For Nikki, who asked me what No Impact Man & I spoke about, & anyone else who is interested, he wrote a little piece about meeting me: Sustainable living as a practice rather than morality lesson. (Yup — as you can tell, we got along! He’s a total champ!)

<3 As a follow-up to my recent Moleskine inspiration article, Shannon sent me this link to customised Moleskines — yum yum!

<3 Last Saturday I went out street-style hunting with Craig of Altamira NYC. It was so much fun; we trawled around Soho, Nolita, the Meatpacking District & the West Village in a quest for the hottest outfits on the street. It was amazing though, I never realised how much work it is! I always thought street-style photographers might nip out for a couple of hours, get a bunch of shots & then call it a day. Not so! We walked for hours & while he did capture some exceptional outfits, they were few & far between! Even in the trendiest parts of NYC... ! He does a magnificent job, so you should check out his website, wink wink, but I commend him (& all street-style photographers!) for the hard work & perseverance it requires!

<3 This girl is 16 & has style that puts, well, pretty much everyone to shame! Wow.

<3 Dhrumil talks about falling still, meditation & the present moment. I really like this video — he’s so cool & genuine. Much love & respec’! Watch & enjoy the message as well as his perfectly-groomed facial hair! Seriously, it is impressive, right?!

<3 Really cool photographs from Nadav Kander.

<3 Standing Versus Sitting — I found this link via Dhrumil, it’s a short piece by a guy who thinks he is much more productive when he stands up at his computer instead of sitting down… I am so curious to test it out now!

<3 San Francisco escorts: No ordinary johns. What kind of person do sex workers interact with? Violet Blue has the dish! (Ooh err.)

<3 12 Traits of Successful Bloggers from Problogger.

<3 Colourful photographs by Sandra Freij.

<3 Tim Ferriss writes about ROWE — Results-Only Work Environment, parts 1 & 2. Show your boss & change your life!

Super-love & cupcakes,
Gala <3

    Those moleskines are gorgeous!

  7. OH MY GOD that SATC link has the most outrageous spoiler about the movie!! The photo’s were incredible though. The seventh one, on the red steps, was my favourite.

The Nadav Kander photos were just incredible.

  8. oh my… i can’t believe jane from seaofshoes.com is only 16! & what an amazing sense of style! it makes me feel even more embarrased about my (lack of) styling as a 16 year old.

also; much love for the rebel romance photos! i love them.

    <3 Anna · May 23, 06:11 AM · #
  9. Sweet sixteen with lots of (mummy & daddy’s) money & designer clothes doth not great style make per se. But hay, that would just be my plebeian self talking there. Marvelous.

    <3 nana · May 23, 06:46 AM · #
  10. She’s 16 & has a pair of PRADA heels!? It’s simply not realistic. I can’t think of anyone who can compete with such extravagance. Personally, anyone who can manage to look that good with a small amount of money and some thrift shopping gets my vote. Sorry lady.

    <3 Amelia J. · May 23, 07:40 AM · #
  11. Woah!!! That 16 year old looks amazing, where on earth is she getting the cash though!?!? I checked out her about me and there’s no mention of it there, must be from the ‘rents – good on her though she knows how to pick her pieces! Xxxxxx

    <3 Hannah · May 23, 08:47 AM · #
  12. Joanne — Oh my god! Really? EEP! I obviously wasn’t paying attention, because I didn’t see it… Sorry! D:

nana — I don’t know about that. Money doesn’t buy taste or style; look at Donald Trump (& most celebrities). I think she’s doing an incredible job, regardless of the price-tag.

Amelia J. — A lot of people have a lot of money, & while I feel a bit weird about high school children with access to that kind of dosh, ultimately it’s none of my business what they choose to do with it. She’s still very stylish!

    <3 Gala · May 23, 10:20 AM · #
  13. I’ll agree with the others- it’s easy to look great when you can just throw around money for designer stuff. It’s a lot more impressive when you manage on a limited, or at least realistic, budget. I doubt I’ll ever be able to spend money like that- Prada shoes run $400-$700! Maybe one day I’ll be able to splurge on ONE pair of such expensive shoes, but her wardrobe appears to be full of things I’ll never afford.

    <3 Rachel · May 23, 10:23 AM · #
  14. Rachel — I disagree. I think people tend to believe that money is the answer to all their problems, or at least most of them, but it’s not. Lack of style is a problem that cannot be solved with cash. I mean, Juicy Couture tracksuits are the best possible case in point. Your average high-end department store is absolutely packed to the gills with hideous, tasteless things. Regardless of how much money you have, dressing yourself is a minefield (unless you have a personal stylist). Honestly, I think getting dressed can be difficult regardless of your bank balance.

    <3 Gala · May 23, 10:28 AM · #
  15. Thinking about it, it’s more that I refute the implication that people who spend a lot of money on clothes are not as stylish/well put-together/sartorially clever as someone who does it all on the cheap.

    Know what I mean?

    <3 Gala · May 23, 10:36 AM · #
  16. Those customised moleskines are stunning! And I must say that I really enjoyed reading that Problogger article.

But that girl’s style – goodness, she’s amazing. Regardless of how much her wardrobe is worth (I’m not in disdain of all of her designer clothes – more in pure envy!), she looks absolutely gorgeous.

I do hope you’re enjoying your jaunt in NYC, Gala! It sounds like you’re having an amazing time!

  17. So wonderful meeting you last night. BTW, Speaking of Carousel. . If you like the Through the Looking Glass sculpture, you might possibly enjoy the Merry-Go-Round in Central Park, if you haven’t already been.

I’ve enjoyed your blog off an on for awhile. I remember the EFT posts and how much I got out of them.

    Thank you!!

    Hugs and Sea Weed Mustaches,
    Carin

  18. Yeah, it was a spoiler about the whole Big/marriage/wedding thing. (Trying to be as vague as possible!) Unless everybody already knew something I didn’t? Don’t worry about it anyway, I can guaran-damn-tee I’ll still love the film.

    <3 Joanne · May 23, 12:44 PM · #
  19. The seaofshoes.com girl is from Southlake, TX, which explains quite a bit if you’re from the area. Very well off community, known for their high school football team (and the huge stadium built for them).

D Magazine calls Southlake “Perfect City, USA:” tinyurl.com/3sffp2 (The splash across the magazine cover reads “Why you Should Hate Southlake”; the three kids are the star football player, head cheerleader, and student body president.)

    <3 Rachel · May 23, 02:13 PM · #
  20. i think that the sea of shoes girl has great style, but i think it is disorienting for most of us to see a 16 year old wearing outfits consisting almost exclusively for expensive designer pieces.

my personal opinion is that some of the shoes are kinda fugly (blue comme des garcons…yuuuck), but i really like others (marigela boots, givenchy lace up heels)...

i couldn’t see myself coming back to this blog because i’m the kind of girl that $50.00 on ONE piece is a splurge. i love vintage because it is affordable, recycled, spontaneous, & unique.

    <3 Rachel Radness! · May 23, 02:39 PM · #
  21. On the sea of shoes girl, I agree with Rachel Radness. She might have a great sense of style etc., but for me it’s very… surprising and odd to see a girl younger than myself spending that much money on shoes. At least, I find it interesting, but that’s a good thing. Great links, Gala!

    <3 Sofia · May 23, 06:36 PM · #
  22. I live in Keller, Southlake’s much poorer neighbor (though I don’t complain, most people are fairly well off here) and yes, the fact that she does live in such an affluent area helps to explain some things.

As it is our rival town, I am probably one of the few people who do not hate Southlake as a whole. With the exception of the few who give the town a bad name, people are nice. Even so, you can’t ignore the obvious snobbery floating in the air. Decent customer service is only found in designer stores for the people with Platinum cards. It’s hard not to envy the place.

I do have to admit though, she is stylish. However, I’m more impressed by her ability to have a unique look in the middle of suburban Texas than by the designer names.

    <3 Ariel · May 23, 08:19 PM · #
  23. Hey Gala!

    Thanks for the link!~

In reference to the earlier discussion, I personally don’t believe that money can buy style, but it can help buy fashion. However, one must wear the clothes, not let the clothes wear them, which can sometimes happen when one doesn’t have a stylish attitude to go with the fashionable attire.

    Just my two cents.

    <3 altamiranyc · May 23, 08:32 PM · #
  24. Hmmm… i love Carrie and Big but something about those rebel romance photos didn’t sit well with me. Nothing to do with the photography, that was great but there was just something about it that i didn’t like.

    <3 Ashley · May 24, 03:18 AM · #
  25. I wasn’t a fan of the seaofshoes.com girlie. I think Gala has a more interesting style and frankly she looked strange to me with those expensive outfits and high heels.

I know girls are growing up faster these days, but to me she just looked like a little girl wearing women’s clothing – it gives me the creeps.

I did love No Impact Man’s write up on Gala though :)

  28. Her space, as well as yours has inspired me, as a 16yr old myself to create my own. Fresh from today. Please check it out

  29. You’re so lucky gala, the Met is my most favouritist place in the WORLD. i would live there if i could but when i was last in NY i only got to spend a couple hours there. =(

  30. Nadav Kander is my favorite photographer. His work is absolutely stunning. I especially love the work he did for Placebo if anyone saw it.

  31. style can’t be bought. a person who thrift shops can be just as stylish as a person who has the dough to spend on Prada and Gucci.
it’s all in how you put it together and the attitude you project.
Case in point: Paris Hilton has all the money in the world, yet does she look stylish?- hells no.
Case in point: how many grubby thrift-store teens do you see running about looking as though they have rolled out of the garbage?

Money can’t buy style. i loved Seaofshoes (although i was insanely jealous)

    <3 nessbow · May 24, 08:44 AM · #
  32. Hmmmm I’m trying to be diplomatic about my response to seaofshoes. It seems a lot of people are discussing her larger than average budget but if you read, one of her jumpsuits comes from Target and she shops at Urban Outfitters and wears Gap and Levis in addition to those other pricier labels. Personally, I’m not fond of her jumpsuits but I do love her taste in shoes, which I could never pull off but would love to try.
I think her style is really different and rather daring ( I would never ever ever wear a jumpsuit..sorry) which is why it’s so fascinating. Also the fact that she is 16 and wears what she wants the way she wants it without really following trend is pretty commendable.

    <3 Tiffany · May 24, 12:59 PM · #
  33. Also I should add that while she does list the brands as anyone doing an outfit post would, she doesn’t really flaunt the price tag.

    <3 Tiffany · May 24, 01:02 PM · #
  34. As a sixteen year old girl, myself, I bet my style would be that great if my mommy and daddy had lots of old money, too.
I bet all sixteen year old girls would dress that great if they were rich. All it is is designer clothing she’s ripped off Lauren Conrad and the like. Me ? I dumpster dive for my clothes. I don’t read fashion magazines. As far as I can tell, that means I have the worst style on the block.

    <3 Lesly · May 24, 03:04 PM · #
  35. I agree with you Tiffany. And who’s to say what is in style? Style is subjective. In high school my sister and I wore lots of hand-me-downs, which my creative sister would take to the sewing machine — even the easiest alterations would make something from the Gap unique. No one can see what the tag says.

    <3 Sophia · May 24, 08:55 PM · #
  36. I’m so surprised by some of the reactions to Sea of Shoes! It seems like a lot of people are judging her because of what her wardrobe is worth. Does it really matter? If everything she owned was vintage, would you be so critical?

Tiffany — Yup, I noticed that. & for a lot of families, spending large amounts of money on clothing & shopping at high-end boutiques is just what you do! It’s not like “oh, poor you” or anything, it’s just the status quo. There’s no point in judging it or getting angry, what’s the point? We’re all different, that’s what makes life so interesting!

Lesly — Not at all. I went to one of the most prestigious schools (if not the most) in New Zealand & my peers dressed terribly. Polo shirts with the collars up & boat shoes, blech! Money is not the answer to all sartorial problems! It definitely gives you more options but style is style, regardless of your bank balance.

    <3 Gala · May 24, 09:21 PM · #
  37. Gala, thanks for the inspiration! I couldn’t resist doing a post on the appartment you featured in this carousel! Maybe you’d like to take a look :)

    Thanks & kisses!

  38. Thanks for putting Colin’s link up (and giving me a mention!). I love it when he starts musing about life and nothing and everything on his blog.

  39. So much stuff to check out and read! Thanks for sharing links. About the 16 year old’s blog: Isn’t it funny how the youngest people can be the most stylish? Perhaps it has something to do with fearlessness… but I wasn’t that confident back then!

    <3 vanessa · May 26, 12:06 PM · #
  40. Thanks for the shout out lovely. I love both of you!

    <3 Philip McCluskey · May 27, 07:29 AM · #
  41. My WORD. Some of the comments here are UTTER rubbish. You can have all the money in the world, wear the best designers and look like crap (HELLO VICTORIA BECKHAM) so whatever rude person (NANA) made that comment, please, Shush because you’re talking rubbish. And OH PLEASE at the girl who said ‘Prada shoes at 16! Thats not right!!’ wah, wah. Where I live, thats not a shocking thing. Just because it seems odd to you it doesnt mean it’s bad or anything to be judged by. What does it matter to you how much money someone has? You all sound like jealous hacks. That girl has an amazing sense of personal style, it’s not the generic ‘Oh I have a chanel bag and coah shoes and juciy couture’ that a lot of ‘wealthier’ girls seem to flock too. I really think some of these comments on here reek of bitterness
