Carousel: Week Ending 30th July 2010

[ 30 July 2010 ]

Carousel

Love it!

Just a little one this week — I was too busy whipping Love & Sequins #10 into submission to do much browsing!

<3 Sunday Life: The fun of analysing dreams. Nice tie-in to Inception, hmm? (Did you see it? You should.)

<3 Oh my god, these shoes — & this girl’s talent — are off the charts.

<3 The Independent Fashion Bloggers’ Fair Compensation Manifesto. Amen sister!

<3 If you’re not in New York, it’s almost cruel to tell you, but the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck has amazing goodies.

<3 16 First Steps to Creating the Life You Want From Some of the World’s Best Bloggers. This is a great piece, & not the same old pieces of advice you’d expect!

<3 Danielle asks, How much money do you want to make this year? It’s an important question! When she asked me, during our phonecall, I was all flustered & unsure. You have to get on top of it!

<3 Things to do this weekend: meditate to Om Namah Shvaya!

<3 Harmony: for doodlers!

<3 How to Throw a Hipster Wedding in 5 Easy Steps. Um… Wait, do these people know that the term “hipster” is an insult?!

<3 Oh my god, this is fabulous. Susie Bubble writes about the Townhouse Escape in London. Can we all go?!

<3 5 Common Happiness Mistakes — “Boosters” That Actually Do More Harm Than Good. Yep, I’d agree with those!

<3 How to tie a scarf from Wikifashion.

<3 I like this behind the scenes video of a shoot for the Motorola Flipout. I mostly like watching stylists do their thing, it is so exciting to me!

<3 Beauty in Everything is rather fab.

<3 I love this article: 5 Stupid, Unfair & Sexist Things Expected of Men.

Not that I have any problem with the idea that women’s sexual pleasure ought to matter to men who have sex with them. The problem lies with the notion that women’s sexual pleasure is entirely men’s responsibility; that pleasing women ought to be completely instinctive; that women’s satisfaction is a victory to be achieved instead of an experience to be shared…

<3 Fashion Face.tv is superb!

<3 RID fashion street snap is always good sartorial inspiration.

<3 Help, I’m bored!

<3 Are we ready? (LOVE this.)

<3 The Lula scrapbook is very sweet.

I’m the King who brought back partying!

Now I’m going to continue dreaming about renting out a huge office space… Mmmm… Have an incredible weekend!

RADICAL self-love & stardust,

<3

  1. A small but perfectly formed Carousel Gala! I adore Fashion Face! I’ve spent most of morning learning how to do wicked eyemakeup! Danielle La Porte’s article is incredibly thought provoking, I earn a very low wage and want to increase it dramatically but i have the luxury of free time, her article does make me wonder what the compromise I’ll have to create that will bring me the most joy… Hope you have a chilled weekend after your Love and Sequins writing frenzy!

  15. All kinds of delicious candies and glistening gems in here! The link to The Life You Want truly brought some new insight (especially since I’m at a terrible future-deciding crossroads) & my friend loves the ‘hipster’ wedding ideas for her own upcoming special day. Such adorable videos. Thanks again, Gala!

  16. I am a bit surprised there was any support at all for the fashion bloggers manifesto the way it was written or that you supported it.

First and foremost when you receive money or gifts for promoting an item or something else, without being very clear you are receiving compensation, and do it in what appears, or you present to be an opinion piece blog, when in fact it is a promotional piece, then you are flat out deceiving your readers. Journalists are fired for this.

I do not disagree with the premise bloggers should be paid for their work and the power of their blog.

Yes I also understand the idea behind product placement and that is paid for whether it is on a magazine cover, in the background of TV show or the obvious Coke cans on the Idol judges table. All of which is legitimate. Just as being a spokesperson for a product is legitimate because you have built and earned a following.

It is a delicate line at times and the manifesto made none of it clear. A manifesto is also an ethical statement, and that one was not.

The manifesto is a start but it is not the answer. and it lacked the flip side. Just as it might be alright to pull photos from some sites and use them for a blog to illustrate an article or procedure or something a blogger should also make sure they are payng their fair share, when appropriate, out to others whose work they are using and benefitting from as well as taking in money. The street should go both ways and far to many bloggers use others work to build their site without compensation.

    A tricky new world.

  17. Oh. My. God. That video… And considering I know rather a lot about the real Charles II… Wow.

  18. Oh, I know this isn’t a link but I just went to the most fabulous place ever!
I heard about this little store in my city that sells personalized perfumes for about 40$. And oh dear cupcakes, I made THE perfect perfume for me. I call it Leafy Elven Cakes, and it’s the scent of a forest with the sweetness of a cake. Essentially, what Hansel and Gretel would smell when they stumble on the Witch’s house in the forest.
If there’s a similar place in NYC, you should totally check it out! (I went to Pure Fragrance, I’m sure there’s similar stores in NYC!)

  19. Gala!
Carousel is wonderful, as usual. I have to open so many new tabs whenever I visit your site!
By the way, the shortened version is totally worth it – L&S No. 10 is spectacular! :)

  20. Anyone know where I can get a pair of those amazing heels? Or anything else she makes, shoe-wise? Or do I just have to settle with pining for them?

  21. Like the link to the 16 steps for creating the life you want. 2010 has been a weird old year for me. It started out with a really serious bought of depression that quite literally brought me to my knees. Went back to work eventually and discovered I didn’t want to do it anymore and I wasn’t the same person I used to be. So I quit. I have a few irons in the fire and I leave in a week. Money is rather crap due to being ill and sick pay, but my mental health isn’t a sacrifice I’m prepared to make again.

So…I decided to move on and out. I’m selling my flat and moving, with the idea of returning to university. I’m a teacher, so I’ll find work. I guess my mood is scared, but not enough to let it stop me. Life is way the hell too short. Those links make a lot of sense and I’m going to check them out further.

    Thanks.

  22. Haha!! I know the guy in the middle..melbourne is a small world. Gala, the podcast is super motivating and inspiring my sparrow soul by the way, gorgeous thing.

I was reading a beautiful simple book about rumi’s 4 TOP TIPS (essentially)

i just thought i’d share the obvious: breathe deeply. all the time! our body’s accustomed to shallow breathing and tense as we still breath

BREATHE DEEP MOTHERLOVERS – even at the supermarket.

    peace out bro

  27. I just have to say—dear god, do I love Horrible Histories! It’s kind of creepy how things spread around the internet, sneaky disease-style…some of my favorite (and seemingly completely unrelated) blogs have been pimping H.H. this past week!

  28. Being called a ‘hipster’ is only an insult if you’re one of those sad people who cares what people think about you/call you. Most adults don’t really care what people call them. It’s easier to just enjoy yourself and live your life! :)
