<3 My extremely adorable friend Alicia from Lulu Wanderlust linked me to blah to TADA! & I think you just might like it!

<3 Your Eyebrows Would Make Fabulous Trim. OH how I laughed.

<3 They Rule “aims to provide a glimpse of some of the relationships of the US ruling class. It takes as its focus the boards of some of the most powerful U.S. companies, which share many of the same directors. Some individuals sit on 5, 6 or 7 of the top 500 companies. It allows users to browse through these interlocking directories and run searches on the boards and companies. A user can save a map of connections complete with their annotations and email links to these maps to others. They Rule is a starting point for research about these powerful individuals and corporations.” Some of the information is outdated by now but it is an extremely eye-opening look at power & who has it.

Logans F*cking Run?) or the dreaded “flip flops and sassy sweatpants” im-going-to-the-store bullshit that we all see so much.”

<3 New Zealand’s Next Top Model Power Rankings, oh so funny, I wish I had found this before! & tonight is the final, PLEASE DON’T SAY ANYTHING IN THE COMMENTS BECAUSE IF I FIND OUT WHO WON BEFORE I SEE THE EPISODE I WILL SURELY DIE. Okay thanks. Haha.

  4. Thank you for posting your friend Audrey Kitchings blog about Gardasil. Very scary. I had to take that shot only a few weeks ago, but I wasn’t pressured by friends, family, or even doctors. I was pressured by the government. I’m a girl from Germany who is currently trying to immigrate to USA, and Gardasil is one of the requirements since, I believe, this year for women under 26. Thanks to Audrey Kitching I will now watch my health extra carefully.

    Keep it up!

  10. Thank you for posting that link about Gardasil.
I would love to see you write an article on this. I feel like a lot of young girls are encouraged by the trendy, beautiful, and successful women portrayed in the “cool” adverts on television to get the shot. But a lot of these girls, and their parents, haven’t had the information before making the decision.

I think as a voice to a lot of young women it would be a great idea for you to bring awareness about this heavily-advertised vaccine, so that it could be something they discuss with their mums or daughters before jumping into such a young, untested vaccine.

  12. Richard Cheese covering Gin & Juice is FUCKING HILARIOUS!!!! I did laugh out loud at work and I did not care how rediculous I looked laughing hysterically!

I love Yoko Ono’s blog and 1000 acorns. This one made perfect sense: “When the war started, I thought it would be more economical to drop
10 thousand dollar bags from the sky to the people of the country. It’s
cheaper, and what they need. But now we don’t even have enough money to
    do that.”

Im not sure if I like Blah to Tada. Didn’t really catch my attention.

Overheard in New York always has the best gems, you’re sooo lucky to have lived there! At times, I agree with the Woman in the coat, I don’t see anything wrong with wearing vintage fur.

Mystic Medusa’s Virgo Lifestyle Tips are spot on! I love how the other Virgo’s meticulously describe their tips. They detail the flavors, textures, colors and variances of their tips so well. I’m a Virgo too (August 27th) and I am certain that red is definetly the perfect shade of polish for summer.

I also loved the Graffiti art. I’m an aspiring graffiti artist myself, on paper for now. As a matter of fact, I think I might draw you a piece sometime. I’ve been reading your blog for so long now, I really should give something back! :)

I agree with BonerParty and as a matter of fact I am about to write a blog post of how sadly disgusting I think it is to be seen in public with a sour face, dirty flip flops, and ragged sweatpants. My philosophy: You never know who you will meat, and first impressions last forever.

I loved the asian poses site! Ideas for new poses! Too cute! SO FUNNY at the same time :)

  20. The Gardasil story was a horrible one, and my sympathies go out to Audrey, but like Kelly says above, I think you should be wholly informed before deciding to get it.

There is a reason Gardasil is so heavily pushed onto younger girls; the incidence of human papilloma virus has been shown to be a vital factor in the later incidence of cervical cancer, which is a nasty bitch of a cancer. Most women are asymptomatic until the cancer is advanced, and there is an almost 50% mortality rate from a cancer that could easily be decimated by reducing the presence of HPV in the population.

The HPV vaccine is so successful, and pushed so hard because of the reasons above, and because it works; unfortunately the protein subunit that makes up the vaccine is, by it’s nature, really weak at triggering the immune response that your body needs to generate to protect yourself against HPV. That’s why it’s coupled to aluminium salts which can evoke a strong immune response and make the vaccine more effective. In rare cases this aluminium can have a toxic effect, but that’s something that can happen with any vaccine using aluminium to enhance the immune responce.

  25. I’ve gotten the first two gardasil shots with no side effects. I lost count of when I had to get my third one, I was supposed to get it recently. I’m glad I read this before hand though. I told my mom and she says I’m not getting the third shot. I am definately relieved. Thank you for bringing this to everyone’s attention!

    <3 MayaSaurus · Jun 5, 08:11 PM · #
  26. I’ll likely have doctors trying to pressure me into getting Gardasil soon. I’ve heard they’re very pushy about it, but there is no chance I’m opening myself up to the chance of severe side effects to prevent something I’m at no risk of! No sex = no HPV. The fact that they give that to girls as young as 9 appalls me – maybe I should have been born a few decades ago, instead.

    <3 Carrie · Jun 5, 08:36 PM · #
  27. I agree with dynamitechar. While vaccines can cause adverse reactions in some people, it is irrational to start preaching complete discontinuation of all vaccines. Especially in this case, there is no actual medical proof that Audrey was sick because of Gardasil. It seems like she just decided that because she got Gardasil and then got sick, it’s the vaccine’s fault. Also, she cites all of the girls who’ve had bed reactions to it, but failed to mention all of the other girls and women who have had the shot without any side effects other than pain at the injection site. It’s like the “vaccines cause autism” all over again: some celebrity needs something to blame, so they blame vaccines and tell everyone to avoid the things that could save their lives. And of course, people listen because they are celebrities, even though they have no medical training whatsoever.

MayaSaurus, if you had no side effects to the first two shots, I encourage you to at very least talk to your doctor about this before deciding to not get your third shot.

    <3 L. · Jun 5, 09:36 PM · #
  30. Wow, that Gardasil vaccine blog post was terrible and pretty much on par with people who think that vaccines cause autism, or that fluoride in water causes heart disease, or that you can cure cancer with homeopathic pills and crystals.

The last thing we need is more people who have no understanding of medical science crusading against advances that save lives. People DIE because they fall for crap like that.

I usually love everything you write, but now I just feel sickened and horrified.

  32. Kate – agreed agreed AGREED. Jenny McCarthy’s vaccine—> autism crusade really shocked me, and since she was given a full platform by Oprah, there are LOTS of people who are putting their children at risk of deadly infections :/ Which is kind of, y’know, terrifying.

    <3 dynamitechar · Jun 5, 10:54 PM · #
  33. I loved this carousel and pretty much all of your writing but I can’t help feeling that posting the link to Audrey Kitching’s blog about Gardasil was irresponsible. Taking medical advice from someone who has virtually no actual knowledge about the science behind this vaccine is not only stupid but dangerous.

Statistically Gardasil injections have less than half the serious side effects of other vaccines. On the other hand 50% of people who contract cervical cancer will die. As someone who’s had the vaccine with no side effects as well as seen dozens of women die of cervical cancer in my line of work it saddens me that young girls who look up to you and Audrey will be turned against this vaccine which will potentially save their lives.

By validating this garbage you are a huge part of the problem.

    <3 Clare · Jun 5, 11:17 PM · #
  34. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that video of the guy dancing! My friends tried to do that at a summer festival last year, didn’t end up as huge as that but that video made me think of that – I love contagious spontaneous dancing!!

    <3 Teresa · Jun 5, 11:22 PM · #
  35. Yeah I think it is socially irresponsible for people to blog about these vaccines. See how many young girls just reading this blog have already decided not to get their next vaccine because they saw Gala write about it?

People who write about vaccinations/immunisations as being evil and dangerous are the worst kind of people because they’re listened to by impressionable/uninformed parents and people who think the system is out to get them. There are so many people out there that say “oh, do your own research” but they DON’T. They listen to one person crusading against vaccinations and then they decide not to. And lo and behold, their kids get hooping cough, HPV, whatever.

The chances of having an adverse reaction to ANY vaccine, including Gardasil, are present, but they are so low. I had an allergic reaction to one of my immunisation needles when I was young, but I still got vaccinated fully anyway. There is NO proof that they cause autism or anything – these children were autistic before they got the shot, or they had a bad immune system BEFORE and the vaccine just highlighted the problems they already have. None of these people are scientists or doctors, they’re just full of hype and scare tactics.

And for the person who said that its disgusting girls as young as 9 get Gardasil shots, what world are you living in? It’s so much more effective to get the shots before you start having sex. Even one sexual partner could be carrying the disease. I only got mine when I was 17 which was way too late.

Like seriously, vaccines are only truly effective if everyone gets them. We could ELIMINATE so many diseases (at least from being fatal) if people just got them. They are pushed onto girls because they save lives! The government doesn’t have some big conspiracy to kill/maim every female in the world. That’s so ridiculous.

Sorry to rant, but I am worried that Gala obviously has young girls reading this blog – like Carrie and Mayasaurus, who are impressionable and think Gala is awesome and will listen to anything she says/links to. I think maybe Gala should be more careful and realise that NOT everyone DOES think for themselves and will follow any link or blog blindly.

    <3 Libby · Jun 5, 11:23 PM · #
  36. I swear this’ll be the last time I chime in, but at the end of the day, who people take their medical advice from is something we can’t control, as much as we would like to. Having a rage @ Gala for posting up a link isn’t going to lead to anything good; I’m focusing on the positive here, in that this discussion will hopefully provoke more people into researching their vaccines and health technology in general so their choices are well informed, and kudos to Gala for instigating that.

    <3 dynamitechar · Jun 5, 11:41 PM · #
  37. Libby- very well said! Also, the point in giving Gardasil to young girls is to vaccinate them before potential exposure to HPV... for old ladies like me who got the vaccine after being sexually active, even though the vaccine lowers the risk, you still have to have Pap smears. It’s not ‘disgusting’, they’re just trying to give the vaccination at the point where it will have the best chance at being effective. Kind of like how we get vaccinated against most diseases as young children instead of as adults.

Anyone who takes medical advice from the internet is not making an informed decision. Ultimately it’s up to the individual whether to get any medical treatments, but at least try to do some actual research before coming to a conclusion. Audrey Kitching is not exactly an authority on the topic.

    <3 L. · Jun 5, 11:57 PM · #
  38. I’m not saying Audrey is right, just saying it’s good to have differing perspectives. People should ALWAYS investigate things for themselves!

    <3 Gala · Jun 6, 12:06 AM · #
  39. I don’t meant to “have a rage” at Gala. I just think that if she wanted to stimulate people into researching about vaccinations/Gardasil, then she could have picked a better link. Audrey Kitching’s “article” is terribly written, and at the end she actually says “DO NOT GET THIS VACCINATION! no matter what your doctors tell you, don’t get it!” That is just ridiculous. One person getting an allergic reaction does not mean they are an expert on the subject, and they shouldn’t be posting inflammatory things like that targeted to young girls.

I just thought Gala would have better judgment to link to that.

I know its Gala’s blog, and I love everything she does mostly, but this is the internet and a public place and I’m allowed to voice my opinion about the social/medical ramifications that things she posts might have. If it’s on the internet and there’s a comment box, I can respond to it. I’m not saying anything bad about GALA herself, or her blog! She just has so many fans that admire her, who are young and impressionable and maybe she doesn’t realise HOW impressionable. That’s all I’m highlighting with my comment. Maybe she doesn’t realise the influence she has.

I wouldn’t have said anything if those 2 girls hadn’t said they weren’t getting their shots now due to reading Audrey’s blog. I find that worrying.

    <3 Libby · Jun 6, 12:11 AM · #
  40. yeah, it bothers me that even though the message here is “do your own research”, girls have read the article by audrey and commented with “wow, now i’m DEFINITELY not getting it!” new vaccines always have complications, and the problem is that some people will be allergic to some of the ingredients but won’t actually know it until they’ve gotten the shot, since there’s no way to tell previously.

it also bothers me that audrey is touting the medical world as corrupt assholes who only want to make money. none of the people who work on it would give it to their own children? really? my mother is a gynecologist who is extremely smart and successful in her field, and yes, she had some concerns about it when it came out and waited at least a year until more was known about it, but she definitely encouraged me to get one and i doubt it was so she could make more money.

the bottom line really is DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. don’t read her article and make up your mind, don’t read this comment and make up your mind. reading a few articles by people unhappy with the vaccine really does not count as research.

    <3 diana · Jun 6, 12:58 AM · #
  41. I’m sorry I really should’ve proofread that bit about the having a rage, I tend to forget the internet does not share my interpretation of phrases lol. But yeah, I mean, I think there’s two ways to take this, and I picked the (overly?) optimistic way :) Audrey’s blog did not sit well with me at all, but there’s nothing I can do to change it now :) It’s very misleading though; the Guillain Barre and paralysis have been shown to not be linked to the vaccine! You can even get Guillain Barre as a consequence of flippin Campylobacter haha.

I have had the first installment of gardasil like 3 times and never finished it because I move around to and from my college in Ohio and was never able to get the other 2 shots in at the right time so I had just decided this week that I should really hunker down and do it since I am hitting the end of the age group its recommended for (after seeing one of the commercials on tv). After reading that link I am determined NOT to get the vaccine and continue having a very safe sex life. Thanks Gala!

  45. Audrey Kitching is someone with a great amount of influence over her fans but no medical or scientific training at all; that’s a dangerous combination. Her experience may be valid, but her scaremongering (“do NOT get this vaccine!”) is as irresponsible as heck. Yes, serious reactions to Gardasil can happen, as with nearly every medicine or vaccine there is. I agree 100% that people should be informed and seek out different perspectives, but the views of one person with zero expertise and an illness not even proved to be related to the vaccine is not a good place to start. I hope the people scared off the vaccine by reading that post will research it a little further before they make a decision that will affect not only their own health but the health of others.

    <3 Alice · Jun 6, 06:29 AM · #
  46. Sure, the influence of one person on her fans can be dangerous, but what to think of the influence of a government supported campaign of a medical company which invested billions of dollars in a vaccin and would surely not be the first to say “Ok, it is dangerous, please don’t buy it anymore and let us face bankrupcy”? I’ve read a lot about the vaccin in the Belgian media, and I’m certainly NOT getting it. It can’t even prevent all cases of cancer caused by HPV and is moreover probably even dangerous in itself!

(And now completely off topic: who won the Solestruck shoes?)

  47. Cervical cancer almost killed me – at the age of 30. Its a young womens’ disease. It was a horrible disease and treatment and there are lots of other women who didn’t catch it as early and went through much worse. 9 months later I’m still massively affected and in fact almost in tears while writing this post. Please Gala post about both sides of this debate and then people can make up their own minds. And WHATEVER people decide about the vaccine please please regularly get your smear tests done!!!!!!!!

  49. Audrey Kitching’s blog was irresponsible. Period. I’m sorry that she had that experience, and it’s totally fine to want to share that with others, but to say “DO NOT GET THIS VACCINE!” when most of your fans are teenage girls is just ridiculous. It would have been great of Gala had posted something that actually looked at both sides.

I wish that guide had more stuff that wasn’t so Brooklyn-centric. It was pretty much just Coney Island, which is…well, obvious. What about the awesome backyard BBQs at Double Down on Sundays? Events at Astoria Beer Garden? There is so much great summer stuff in NYC!

Oh and PS- I had all three Gardasil shots last year because I don’t feel like getting cervical cancer and I researched it, saw how successful it was and talked to my OBGYN. I’m so afraid of needles I’m 25 and STILL cry if I have to get a shot (unless it’s filled with ink, apparently) and everything went smoothly and perfectly. My boyfriend, who is a PA was able to give me the shots at home. No side effects, no cancer, brilliant decision to get it :)

  53. I appreciate the post you linked about Audrey. I’ve gotten sick off of a vaccine and people tried to convince me it wasn’t because of it. Doctors ignored me when I tell them about it or try to demean it. They try tell me “I had a little cold.”

It was more like getting the flu. I had zero energy, I ached, I had fevers chills and was in terrible pain and it took me a few days to feel like I didn’t have the flu. It was actually how I felt when I had the flu two years later.

Because I had a bad reaction to just a normal vaccine that everyone gets, it made me say “Hey. I need to research before I agree to ANYTHING, the government wants me to put in my body.”

I think the point is you need to research the good, the bad, the ugly and decide what is best for you. And to inform you the risk YOU ARE TAKING EACH TIME YOU GET A VACCINE. I’m actually scared of them.

I don’t think it’s irresponsible to do that but maybe there needs to be a “this is a different side of the vaccine, do your research” add on so people can’t tear at you.

  54. If you read Audrey’s blog about Gardasil and then look at her past blogs it is obvious that she did not write the majority of the Gardasil blog but rather did a lot of copying and pasting. Her blogs are usually riddled with basic spelling and grammatical errors. Gala I appreciate that you encouraged readers to check out the link because some people may have never questioned something like that before. However, I think that people should do their own research, discuss it with friends/family/doctors, and come up with the choice that it right for them.

  55. For those people whinging about how Gardasil doesn’t even stop all cases of HPV, that is a well known fact presented in the companies literature about the injections. Gardasil is proven to stop 70%-90% of the different strands of HPV, ergo 70%-90% less risk of cervical cancer and genital warts.

Secondly, one of the things Audrey was saying caused her ‘reaction’ was the presence of aluminium. Virtually every person in the world cooks in aluminium saucepans evryday. The only time that aluminium would be presenting an issue in your system was if you had seriously damaged kidneys.

In response to Gala saying that people should investigate things for themselves, I think the point that people are making is that that is all well and good but a lot of frequent visitors to yours and to Audrey’s sites are impressionable young women, likely to take what you say/link to as gospel. This very fact is obvious in the comments to this post where many girls have responded saying they are not getting a potentially life saving vaccine BECAUSE of what Audrey has said. No offense to her but I certainly wouldn’t want to be taking serious medical advice from Audrey.

  56. All I can say is that I got the Gardasil shot and have no regrets about doing so. I think the risk involved is by far outweighed by the benefits of avoiding the potential danger of HPV!

That being said, Overheard in NYC is basically the funniest stuff on the ‘net these days!

  57. I agree with what others have said that Audrey Kitching is probably not the best place to start a conversation about investigating gardasil or medical products. Love the blog otherwise gala but that link seems to be irresponsible from some peoples’ reactions who have had a knee-jerk reaction of refusing gardasil injections all together.

I knew a girl in college who died of cervical cancer just before her 21st birthday. Would gardasil have made a difference for her? Who knows but there is lots of evidence to suggest it may have. I’ve had all three and haven’t noticed a difference. Investigate products is good advice but i don’t think there’s a need to be paranoid. The fact is pharmaceutical medicines do save lives.

(Wow, I comment here all the time and i’ve never made such a big one!)

  58. to chime in on a topic already beaten to death, but maybe from a slightly different perspective here.

first, i second everything said above about herd immunity (look it up) and the risk/benefit ratio here. most of whats been said about in a sciencey manner i concur with. that said, since some people dont think science in their gut, which is where people are making these decisions apparently:

Listen up ladies.. think about the freedoms you were given by those brave souls who tried the last medical development that freed you and your sex lives, thats right, the pill. they took and tested a medicine with huge consequences if it didn’t work, and as you know, nasty effects sometimes even if it did. they had very little data on long term consequences of the drugs, and they still took it.

why? because they knew why they were taking it. do your research. find out about the connection. taking this doesn’t mean youre going to have to be promiscuous, or even that you ever have to have sex. it just keeps you safe from a nasty virus (Which you can get btw on any mucus membrane, kisses anyone?)

be brave for the future. suffer the cold and flu like symptoms that any immunization can give you (youre poking at youre immune system, and trying to get a response.. dont be suprised about seeing/feeling like youre immune system is working.)

Be calm, carry on. lets stop assuming the worst here kiddies. lets look to the best, where we have one more thing in our arsenal to feel safe about when we do want to have sex with that person we really love. Think about passing that safety (And better, because we’ll have more data!) on to the future generations, your kids, your nieces, friends, and neighbors. be informed, and brave, for the future.

and now i feel like i sound like my mom.

  59. I was also a little horrified to read Audrey’s blog, and the opening comments. Gala I would also implore you to just mention an opposite side of the issue. I have had two of the three shots with no reaction. My sister did have slight flu reactions to her shots for the day after, but was over it soon after. Yes, it is soo important to do one’s own research but for Audrey to say “Don’t get this shot no matter who tells you to” is completely irresponsible of her. I know you were sparking a debate, and I appreciate that, but please consider your younger, more impressionable readers who may take any link you submit at face value, especially ones concerning their health.

Again, sorry to beat the dead horse on this one.

  60. I had the shots, and only a few months afterward got into a relationship with a guy who had decided not to tell me that he might have HPV. Of course, it’s important to be able to trust the person you’re sexually involved with, but you can never be 100% sure that someone is telling you the truth. I’m out of that relationship, and so far I’ve shown no signs of HPV – which may be at least partially thanks to the vaccine. I think it’s important to consider the vaccine, even if you plan to lead a 100% safe sexual life (although there’s really no such thing as completely safe sex), simply because you never know what can happen.

  62. Hey thanks so much for the link, have loved writing the power rankings for NZNTM, and people seem to have responded really well to them. The one you linked to was actually the last in the series, you can read the rest here.

  63. The Asian Poses site is brilliant! My little girl is 16 months old and like to copy new things these days so I’m totally getting her to do all those poses for cute pictures, especially the paws-up-to-cheeks cat one! Cuteness.

  66. I concur with the statements about anti-vaccination hysteria. I’m 2/3 of the way through my vaccination and my body has not reacted adversely. However, I’m not going to use my own personal experience to illustrate the average Gardasil experience. Instead I would urge girls to look up general stats with severe negative effects, potentially caused by it, like Ms. Kitching’s, in mind and decide if they, personally, think the risk is small enough to take.

This is Ms. Darling’s blog and she is thus allowed to post whatever she likes. I personally think it is commendable to post ‘another side of the story’ when girls are getting bombarded with advertisements (seriously, wtf? this doesn’t happen in Europe) and other pressures in favour of the vaccine. However, I don’t think it’s entirely responsible to post on such a contentious issue without at least a brief reference to the benefits of Gardasil, especially considering that the only tempering voice in Ms. Kitching’s post’s comments gets slated by others. Girls listen to their role models, not to their doctors and certainly not to their parents!

  68. As above, I think you should really do your research before posting on big-deal issues such as immunisation.

This might be a good starting point for some comprehensive information on Gardasil adverse reactions reported in Australia, for anyone interested:

  69. i had no problem with gardasil and think the problem may have been how audrey’s doctors weren’t informed enough to check into her medical history and think that could be affecting her so poorly. some of the responses on HER blog were very sad how her fans follow anything she says.
