Alternative title: How to wear a cocktail dress during the day!

Navy blue sunglasses
Kenzo paisley vintage silk scarf (new!)
Blue merino wool singlet from Glassons (I bought this to wear at Burning Man at night)
Dress by Grace Sun, from Beloved Boutique
Black wool cardigan from Ricochet
Black/blue polka-dot wool leggings
Dizingof rose-print cowboy boots
Tarina Tarantino blue ring

Like my manicure? I got it done at French Pink (best nail salon in Melbourne, hands down) & the polish is Stephanie by Christina Fitzgerald.

It’s cold out there today! Sheesh!
As you can probably see from these pictures, the dress I’m wearing is super-elegant & definitely designed for evening. The fabric is silk georgette & very slinky. The thing is, if you put a bit of thought into it, you can easily dress this kind of thing down for different occasions. To wear at night I would probably accessorise it with high heels & a simple necklace, but with a splash of colour underneath, a scarf & some fun matching accessories, an evening dress can easily transition to corporate or even supermarket wear!
P.S. I took all these photos with an audience of construction workers & one lunch-eating corporate dude. I think they enjoyed the show!
Love letters & feather headdresses,

aww. totally cuutee.
love it.
You look very, very cute, Ms Gala :)
I love your handbag, and – nice scarf!!
If I lived in Melbourne I’d propose some kind of a scarf hunt (to the tune of “going on a bear hunt …”) but alas! I don’t!
Natalie — Aw! I actually bought this scarf on Ebay for about $3 or something, yay! I’ve only bought one scarf in Melbourne so far & it’s a vintage purple swirly Pucci-esque one. But it was overpriced!
Ack, you look absolutely beautiful & that’s a great outfit!
And we also have about the same shade nail polish :) I have a purple shade that’s similar looking too, and I love them both.
ahhhhhhhhhhhh
my favorite picture is the 1st one, you look adorable!
the close up is beautiful too, your skin looks so flawless. what on earth do you use??
oh…
and i LOVE the outfit gala
Elizabeth — Christina’s nail polish line is awesome!
rachael — I wrote about the skincare products I use in this article: http://galadarling.com/article/what-were-using
& for make-up I pretty much just wear MAC :>
such a fun outfit… and OMG! i chose the same colour when I went to french pink!!! x
Natasja — Great minds, baby! xx
Oh yay! You look so great! Whooo! I was wondering how you managed to take those photos in that location . . . I’d love to see a video of one of your photoshoots! I LOVE a good singlet-under-a-dress; I have a terrible singlet-addiction. And you have such mad crazy matchy-matchy two-tone colour skills – deeply satisfying. Also, French Pink – woohoo! And finally, in this disjointed babblefest (vive la babble!) . . . cold? Wow, what’s that like? I’ve forgotten ;-D
Nadine — Hee. I just take my tripod & camera remote, set up & start clicking! Not very exciting, honestly, plus I’m sure I look like an über dork while I do it! One day I will make a video of it, though! & yeah, cold! Crazy! Come back, summer! Our love affair was too brief!
gala!!! i’ve been reading your site for so long and even though i don’t really have time to devote to a blog like yours, i’m really glad you’re doing it: i feel like i’m living vicariously through you :) anyways, you answered my question by answering nadine’s and i’m so amazed! i always thought your boyfriend or someone took those pictures: you hide the remote quite beautifully haha
what a beauty you are! i love your pics!
Hi Gala, great outfit but where did you get your bag? Its lovely! That nail polish is a great shade, is that available in the UK? xxx
amethyst — I sometimes have my boyfriend take my shots if we’re out in public, but I usually do it myself. I have been doing it so for long now that it’s no trouble! xx
ami — Aw, merci!
Jaymi — Thanks honey! The bag is by Trent Nathan, & I bought it in a department store here in Australia. Not sure about the Christina Fitzgerald polish — your best bet would be to check their site for international stockists!
Those leggings are absolutely awesomesauce! May I ask where you got them?
And your hair looks pretty rad too. ^^
Wow. This is just awesome. I am VERY excited for autumn and winter. AGHH so MUCH awesome things to wear, and tights!!! Yours are so super! xo
too gorgeous! I love your hair more and more with every photo you take. and I don’t know how you always get everything to match! I love it.
xo
Aw you look so pretty Gala! How are your hair extensions going?? Have they started to come loose at all??
PS Nice sunglasses! I have some like that at home but I don’t really need them in London! Hee!
Those leggings are gorgeous! I love how your outfit goes so well with your hair.
i love that that blue is called stephanie, i have a cheshire cat grin now :)
and i adore your ring, its fantastic!
Gala how long does it take you to plan your daily outfit? out of curiosity anyway ;)
Meg — I bought them from a discount store kind of thing — they were $2!!!
MJ — Extensions are going really well! Two of them have come out but I think that’s to be expected. I still have lots of hair! I’m thinking about getting a trim actually, just so it looks a bit neater.
Miss Steph — It depends! Sometimes I have sartorial block; like writer’s block but clothing-related! ;D You know that thing where you stand in front of your closet & your mind goes blank? Yeah, that. But today was easy. I wanted to wear the Grace Sun dress but wanted to dress it down, & once I thought of my merino singlet, it was very straightforward from there!
Your hair with the polka dots on those leggings – looks amazing!!! I want blue hair!!! Xxx
This is a fantastic outfit, and you look gorgeous!!
Yay! Thank you for this article. I have lovely black semi formal black dress that I’ve been wanting to wear more. I shall have to try something like this soon.
will you be at Burning Man this year? It would be fun to meet you in person and give a hug of thanks for the super fun blog.
Love the polka dot leggings! Not seen them in wool before. .. and I only wear wool or cotton!
you always look so arrestingly gorgeous in blue.
Fabulous outfit Gala! I especially love the little things like your ring and the pokadot leggings.
You look great in blue, and I’m very grateful for the tips on how to dress down formal dresses. I would love to wear the few dresses that I have more often, especially when the weather begins to warm up.
Gala you look stunning!I’m in love with your boots they look great on you!I haven’t heard of that brand before is it exclusive to australia?
Thanks cuties!
Lynne — At this stage, it doesn’t look like it. It’s interesting, the longer I am away from it the less I feel the desire to go back. I am planning on being in the States around that time though: my birthday’s in September! So we’ll see :>
anya — Yes, Dizingof is a v. small chain of boutiques here. They have some really interesting things! At the moment I am kind of eyeing up some zebra-print open-toed ankle boot things…
I’ve been feeling kind of bummed out lately, and we’ve been having especially miserable weather here in this part of the globe. Now, I am nothing remotely resembling a fashionista – frankly, I am the pinnacle of your pre-bootcamp tomboy description – but when I woke up yesterday, I decided the day would go a lot better if I put on something that made me feel especially NICE. So, I outfitted myself in a very Gala-inspired ensemble.
I think it’s funny that this was your outfit of the day because I think you took a similar approach to me by changing the nature of certain articles (in your case, making a cocktail dress something casual; in mine, wearing a slip as a shirt-dress). I really like when people figure out new ways to wear certain types of clothes and looks, especially as someone who likes things casual casual casual but still enjoys (at least observationally) fancy clothes or fancy elements in clothes. To me, this was definitely kind of inspiring, but also, it’s just a great outfit. Nicely done.
For some reason, when I saw the second picture, I thought ‘Ringo Starr’.
Idk? Haha.
But you do look muy adorable! =]
i’ve been going to french pink for a few months now… usually once a week. i love it! i used to bite them so badly and my nails are so healthy and look great now!
mine are the christina black/blue this week… am going red / orange next week :)
Very cute but ouch, that dress would break the bank for me. But you probably would have that dress for a long time while you also would mix and match it with things. Either way, you’re looking cute.
I love your looks, and this website!
I must come here every 2 or 3 days…
Just to see what’s new…
You’re an inspiration & a Big Heart!
Thanks for your being~
Love, from Seoul,
JJ
This is totally off topic but I’m sure you can help me out with this question… Im looking for an online cupcake resource, a really comprehensive one that’ll tell me how to make all kinds of icings and frostings and has lots of pretty, yummy pictures!
I have been looking for them myself but haven’t found anything as inspiring as you’re blog, I thought maybe you had a little something up you’re sleeve that you wouldn’t mind sharing…?
PS: Im planning to conjure up some chocolate chilli cupcakes with rosewater frosting in the near future, I’ll let you know how it goes xxj
Jers — The best one I’ve found is cupcakeblog.com — Cupcake Bakeshop by Chockylit. I wouldn’t say it’s particularly comprehensive, just interesting. It’s basically the kitchen adventures of a cupcake-obsessed woman! The photographs are brilliant & she really does make some amazing things. I’d also suggest having a look at Cupcakes Take The Cake at cupcakestakethecake.blogspot.c…. It’s kind of a compendium of all things cupcakey, & they have lots of links down the side, too. Hope this helps! xx
I love your style!
Hugs from orway (:
