Daily Outfit: 25th October 2009
[ 4 November 2009 ]
A couple of weeks ago, San Francisco-based (& potential New Yorker!) photographer Lydia Hudgens & I went out on some adventures around New York City.
These were shot in Tompkins Square Park & around the East Village (where I live). It was a beautiful autumn day — cold but clear, perfect for walking around & taking in the beauty of the city.

I wore…
A raspberry beret (the kind you find in a second-hand store). Actually, it’s a snood, & I bought it on Etsy last year!
Tarina Tarantino pavé heart necklace (on a modified chain — it was a sample piece).
Floral print strapless dress from Forever 21.
Vintage faux fur coat (love love love).
Pyramid stud belt from Forever 21. I wear this with pretty much every dress I own.
Ankle boots from TopShop. I am 5’11” in these pictures!
This is my uniform for the fall — cute jackets & coats over sun dresses. I have been doing it mercilessly. You might as well get as much wear out of your dresses as you can, don’t you think?! It looks really fancy but is so simple, which is the best bit! Last night I went to a secret party wearing a black velvet blazer over a floral sun dress with black stockings & boots. Do you have a uniform that gets you through the seasonal transition?

This coat is sublimely warm, I cannot tell you how much I love it! It is definitely one of the best clothing purchases I’ve made in a while — & it wasn’t even expensive. (About $70, I think. eBay is the best best best place to buy vintage coats!)

Standing in the middle of the sidewalk, being a pest, St. Mark’s Place.

Sometimes a girl has to hoik her dress up! Ha!
Thank you, Lydia, for being so amazing! Love, love, love!
Love letters & feather headdresses,

you are waaay to adorable to be allowed. ;) the coat looks fabulous, the last pic made me laugh!
Hahah, it is the unglamorous truth :D
Oh, Gala! I love the second-to-last and third-to-last photos. They are beautiful. I’m also loving you with the white blond hair. It’s such an awesome contrast.
I adore that coat! I’ve been searching unsuccessfully for something like that for a while. I wish I could afford the East Village. I’m moving back to the city soon and I’m going to end up in Brooklyn. One stop outside of the village, but still. I love me some Alphabet City.
I am such a sucker for when dress hems line up with coat hems. Ugh. Like a PRAYER!
xo
First of all, RASPBERRY BERET?! YES!
Sorry, I got carried away. I seriously want to serenade you with Prince songs now. Ugh. You are wicked gorgeous. I’m loving the look today. It’s kindof different for you. Really classy stuff, though. :-D
Is it possible you’re just getting prettier and prettier? Maybe I’m just biased toward blondes, though…!
Great look. Love the coat!
I love the faux fur coat, it’s gorgeous.
And the Raspberry Beret made me think of Prince’s song. You know, Raspberry Beret? Such a fun song.
Still loving the ice-blonde hair. By the way, I’m doing an assignment at uni on internet lady bloggers, and I might be using iCing as an example, just cos it would make my assignment more fun to write… lol. Best assignment ever!! :D
Love the snood, regardless of it’s not-quite-medievalness. :P (I always think of SCA when I see a snood).
And will someone baste that lamb above? If they can’t say something constructive (which criticism CAN be, for it is at times constructive also), why say anything at all?!
And technically speaking…anyone/thing ‘modelling’ something is a model. Lamb Bast, you should do yourself a favour and look THAT up for yourself.
I LOVE your new(ish) hair and the fur coat!
I love that floral dress on you. I remember trying it on at F21 and it was definitely way too short to be decent on me.
The snood/beret/hat-like object is gorgeous too, especially the color!
You are sublimely beautiful in such a unique and wonderful way. I love it.
Loving the look! – I haven’t commented for a while but felt the need to b/c:
a: you look fantastic and the photos are beautifully taken
b: ‘lamb bast’ is going on like a pork chop! If you don’t like something don’t go to the site!!!! It’s easy.
You go Gala! Keep doing what you do & keep improving & moving forward :)
I’ve always wondered what the difference between a beret and a snood is! I’m a D.V addict and she talks about them relentlessly. How is your hat different from a beret? Is that it’s knitted? Or bigger? Just curious…
Either way I love it! Looking gorgeous as ever… Just thought I’d comment to let you know I’m still reading! xThe second one is my favourite. Cruising around with a photographer getting your pictures taken is my idea of self-indulgent heaven!
The beret/snood my dear, is too fabulous!
And in my humble opinion, the white hair is stunning on you. It’s quirky and unique, but will be easier to dress then pink hair.
And you were a blast to shoot. You better believe I’m moving to New York Jan 2010. Sounds like a group of us photo girls are making the move together! ;D
Stunning! You have that.. what they call ethereal beauty! :) I love the idea of carrying on summer dresses in autumn. Just throw on a coat, stockings, boots and your ready to jump over puddles.
Double stick tape worked for me! It helped hold my dress up —- till I got really sweaty, then it began to slip again, ha!
Love the faux fur coat, and the heart necklace… but that beret looks awesome with your blond hair! Who took the photos, they are lovely?!
Wow, I totally love the pics, though I can’t even explain why.
Probably because your skin looks so glowly and flawless.
I love the chic make up. Looks very sophisticated.
The combination: (Faux) Fur + skin is very sexy too.
Great post, Gala!
That is a fabulous outfit and those are some beautiful photos!! So much pretty in this post.
You haven’t done an outfit post in awhile, I was beginning to miss them, haha.
I’m absolutely in love with that coat, I need one.
It looks amazingly soft as well :)
Diggin’ the blonde hair too, gorgeous.
Beautiful Gala, beautiful pictures!
Usually when I see pink eyeshadow on a person, I want to douse them with litres of Visine. You seem to be the only exception, you wear it very nicely.
I love how your sleeves peep through in some shots!
what a gorgeous outfit! you look great (i want to steal your frock…)
pink is definitely your color!! whenever i see bright pink, i usually think of you, lol
I have that dress! These are so g-damn beautiful. Amazing work Gala :)
hey gala,
i thought i commented on some previous post but i went back and check and there’s no comments by me °-°

S.
Hi Gala, you look great… I miss checking your site every day for updates, but have recently rediscovered your archive, which is what attracted me to your site in the first place back in 2007. It’s still just as helpful – just been checking out the article on assertiveness. Whatever you move on to in the future, you have created a fantastic resource! x
Yay for fuzzy jackets! It’s the way forward, I reckon.
you’re so purrrty! lydia’s photos (and you, duh) are beautiful1 still amazed by your unrivaled hair chameleon abilities.
These photos are stunning. What a fantastic set.
Love that beret!
I am all boots and skirts and layers and legwarmers in the autumn, especially since I have to wear uniform to work! Dressing up is mandatory in the evenings. :D
I just have to say I love love love your outfit! and your new hair is gorg! xD
Okay and this may sound weird coming from a girl, but I think the picture where your tattoo is peeking out of your coat kind of sexy! There, I said it!
Looking at this pictures I see that I definitely need to get a faux fur coat soon…
the first and fifth photo with the coat of your shoulders…wow v sexy!
This style you invented with the fur coat over sundress is created by the kind of unique sparkly thinking that drew me to you in the first place.. <3
You are very inspiring and without inspiration and sparks there is nothing.
my hero.
The background and your skin look amazing! I love the pairing of a summer dress with a fur coat, very madcap!
gala darrrling, why so serious..? I LOVE IT
madonna
x
I am ALWAYS hoiking my dress up. No idea why though. If these badboys can’t hold ANYTHING up, what’s the point of them being so large ;_;
You look GORGEOUS!
I love this outfit in particular and the concept in general. Who doesn’t love a raspberry beret? (Prince ♥) But in all seriousness, fabulous outfit, gorgeous photos. I’m going to try doing more of the sundress layering with coats thing this fall and into the winter (with more layers) because I love dresses and never get to wear them enough.
Alzy — I love me some Alphabet City too. Good times!
Mary — You can serenade me with Prince songs any time! I love that little purple man! & thanks very much. I think I am dressing up a bit more these days, or at least, my looks are less “messy”. Writing Love & Sequins #6 was really good for me in that regard, it caused me to re-think how I dress myself. Yay style evolution!
Alice — Blushhhhh!
Kerry — Haha, sounds like fun. If you do, send it to me, I’d be keen to read it!
Natalie — There is nothing WORSE than a dress which is too short! It makes you feel so self-conscious. Especially when you decide to buy it anyway, then always put it on & take it off immediately because it makes you feel uncomfortable. AWFUL!
Nelly! — Mega-watt love to you, moo!
Lady Smaggle — A snood is bigger, more baggy. You can see in the photo of the back of my head that it drapes down, whereas a beret is more fitted. They are more hood-shaped than a beret which is more round. More info than you ever needed: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snood_) Haha!
Nadine — Haha, yes! Seriously! Talk about spoilt!
Luinae — You’re right, it’s so much easier to dress. It makes a nice difference, too — it still stands out but not too much, which means I (feel like I) have to make more of an effort with my appearance. If that makes sense!
Eve — Yes, that’s exactly what it’s about! I don’t want to be donning full-on winter regalia until I absolutely have to!
Althea — Stick the dress to your strapless bra! Sweat won’t affect you then!
Aimee — Lydia Hudgens!
Kimmi — I know! It’s hard for me to take pictures in my new place because I’m still setting up my office & there are hardly any blank walls!
Yukino — Haha. Thank you very much for not spraying me with Visine!
ashley h. — It really is, even if it’s not my hair colour, I still manage to work in somehow!
krySal — For $84 you get every episode. When I get the receipt from Paypal, I’ll send you all the past chapters, & you get the new ones as soon as they come out. There will be 12 in total, & I’ve done 6 so far. Hope this helps!
Amelia — It’s so good to be able to wear cardigans & hats again!
Melissa Dominic — Strapless dresses are ALWAYS too big for me in the bust, so I use Hollywood Tape to keep them attached to me! I just tape the dress to my strapless bra. I forgot to tape my dress on this time though, oops :D But it is the answer, I promise!
SaraKate — Yay, please do! It is seriously the best way to do transitional dressing.
just read ur answer, so .. gala darling, u got a new customer coming in ;)
You look divine! When it starts to get cool I add stockings and my long faux fur leopard dress coat. I adorrre it, makes me feel rich and famous.
Gala, I love the new hair. I think it gives you a touch of elegance to go with your playful side. ♥
I love that snood! I really need to get on the Etsy bandwagon. There are so many cute things on there, and I’d rather be supporting creators directly than going to chain stores to get clothes!
Oh, I just found who I bought the hat from! If anyone wants to buy a similar one… www.etsy.com/shop/purplesagede… :>
at least you’ve got something to hoik YOUR dresses over! you’re amazingly beautiful and pleasant—and you’ve saved one of my sun dresses from being trashed. i think i know a lady who’s going to be even more of a doll tomorrow. oh, yes!
Yeahhh, hoik happens. Love the hat!
Also, I’m a new reader, finally dropping a comment to say ‘hello’. :)
I love your beanie! STEALS >w
you are so so so stunning.
Gorgeous photography! I love all the pink in this outfit. :)
These pictures are amazing!!! I’m not sure why but my first impression of these photos are like “You’re so Carrie Bradshaw!!” Hahaha.
Gorgeous pictures! You look stunning. And nothing beats NYC in the fall. : )
Can you please do a makeup post?
I like how you can wear these red/cranberry colours around your eyes without looking ill!
I think that first close up shot is absolutely amazing. I love looking at your pics each week. Thanks for sharing with us all.
Haha! Thx for the reply Gala! I love it!! With team work we covered the 3 main meats!!
Oh man! I just got a similar faux fur coat for the same reason! We must be fashion linked psychically. I found a big snow leopard coat on eBay and I’ve started to wear it with light dresses. I can look movie star glamorous, get more use out of my summer dresses, stay toasty, and look like a snow beast in this coat. Now that is multitasking.
On a less silly note, I love the contrasts in your outfit. The silver white of the coat and your platinum hair are brought out even more by the raspberry-ness of your hat and dress, and vice versa. How lovely.
OH MY GOOD GOD! I have been looking up and down and all around for a nice looking faux fur. I must ask, do you know who makes it? And how much did you pay for it? And does it feel very soft?
Thanks Gala!
- Sarah :)
Sorry. Just now saw where you said it was $70. haha. oops.
