  36. Wow, it’s crazy that I should see this today just when I need everything to be alright. My boyfriend of 3 years and I just got into a rather huge disagreement and almost broke up. I feel reassured.

  37. “me”-

if you care so much about these “third world” countries, maybe you should educate yourself on the proper terms to describe developing countries. the cold war was 50 years ago.

    try en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_wo…

also, i would be quite offended if i were living in a less developed nation and someone thought i didn’t want to/shouldn’t hear “everything is going to be alright.” encouragement- it’s a human condition.

    <3 lo · Dec 7, 09:45 PM · #
  38. Lo, I don’t ascribe to placing wet towels over other people’s fuzzy warm feelings, but I find it a bit rich that you have no qualms in patronizing “Me” into using expressions that are more palatable to your sensitivities when “Me” is scared and fearing for people close to him/her. Glad to hear you can imagine how you would be offended should you be part of a “less developed nation”. Clearly you’d still be quibbling over language.

Otherwise, no, things aren’t necessarily going to be alright, no-one with an ounce of global awareness would affirm it, HOWEVER, it’s vital to hope so no harm done and it DOES make me feel better to read it on a card.

  39. Oh my gosh u have NO IDEA how much I needed that!!!! Thank u thank u thank u!!!

    <3 Kate · Dec 7, 10:34 PM · #
  40. jen-

the use of “third world” is not about using an expression that is not “palatable” to my sensitivities. it is an offensive and old-fashioned phrase, like using the term “orientals” or “negroes”. i suppose it would be fine with you if i described someone as a negro? after all, it’s just language, far be it for us to “quibble” over it, right?

funny, i find it a “bit rich” that you find it rich that i used a patronizing tone, but then are fine with turning around and using that tone on me. and adding self-righteousness to it.

  43. Just found you via Problogger. Very excited to meet another bloggy kiwi chick and feeling in the pink here thanks to your sweet as design.

I’m in Australia and enjoying the idea of an icy bath:) Have posed some questions for you over with Darren but I think I know the answer to the last one – I bet your undies are pink too:) In my defence, the rest of my questions were quite serious so I wanted to lighten things up a bit…

Anyway, it’s a pleasure to “meet” you here and read you. Keep up the great writing.

  44. Um no, I don’t call people “negroes”. In case you were wondering which you do seem to be.
