Fabulous New Year's Eve Outfits

[ 20 December 2007 ]

Okay, so I know I am slow to pick up on this trend, but I am severely obsessed with Polyvore. For those of you who don’t know what it is, Polyvore is a site which catalogues practically every piece of clothing & every accessory available online. You can search by item, website or colour, & then drag & drop the pictures to create dream outfits. As you can probably guess, it is very evil & very addictive.

Here are some ensembles I’ve come up with. I would be totally keen to wear one of these on New Year’s Eve. I have expensive taste! Anyway, I hope you enjoy gawking & find them inspiring!

Polyvore is evil!

Satin turban from Topshop; stack of bracelets by Jessica Kagan Cushman; leather jacket & gathered skirt by Rick Owens; carousel horse necklace by Dollydagger; white fingerless gloves by Patricia Field; jewelled clutch from Monsoon; hair-calf ankle boots by Manolo Blahnik.

Polyvore is evil!

Marc Jacobs monogram headband; black cardigan from Forever21; leopard print bangle; Chloe wool knickerbockers; brown Hermes birkin; Chloe platform buckle booties.

Polyvore is evil!

Sequin beret from Miss Selfridge; Ray-Ban glasses frames; Luella silk twill mini-dress; Luella “Geek!” tote bag; spectator platform oxfords; pearl bracelets from Topshop.

Polyvore is evil!

Grey beret from Mango; grey angora cardigan from Debenhams; Calypso Dupioni smock dress; Tiffany sapphire & diamond ring set in platinum; cubic zirconia channel ring; sequin hinged bracelets from Nordstrom; boots by Frye.

Polyvore is evil!

Emilio Pucci vintage sunglasses; utility shirt dress by Oli; aqua wool/cashmere pashmina; Missoni ribbed wool leggings; earrings by Claire’s; lucent sky false eyelashes by Shu Uemura; Josephine bangle by Mark Davis; Dior Cannage shoulder bag; Emilio Pucci printed open-toed heels.

What are you doing for New Year’s Eve? & more importantly, what are you going to WEAR?!

  1. oh golly – I just went to the site to have a little peek – and now I’m creating a second outfit… what have you created! haha, I can’t wait for NYE! I’m going to Darling Harbour with some mates to party it up! What will you be doing on NYE?

    <3 Alexa · Dec 20, 03:11 AM · #
  2. Alexa — I know, it’s totally dangerous! EEP! Your NYE sounds exciting, I have no idea what I’m doing yet! My boyfriend’s brother is going to be in town so I’d like to do something super-fun, but haven’t heard of anything which really appeals…

  3. Oh Gala, you’re so right! polyvore is totally addictive! I’ll post some of the outfits I’ve created on my blog soon. Thanks for introducing me to polyvore! evil, evil ;)kisses!

  4. EE! What an awesome post! Wow Gala you have the most fabulous taste, I ADORE the first outfit it’s gorgoues! I love that turban from Top Shop. Did you know it also comes in red? I think I’ll venture out and make a purchase this afternoon … teehee!

    xx

  5. Daiane — Hee. I am happy to spread the evil whenever I can! ;>

MJ — Ooh, red huh? I have it in black, silver & turquoise. Though, strangely, the black one is bigger than the others, so it slips down my head. Boo!

  6. oh i love these! i really need to give polyvore a try.. ahem.. after finals if i know what’s good for me, haha.

  7. I love the Luella Geek bag, I wan tone.

mmm I still don’t know what I will be wearing next year. I hope to top last year which I celebrated japanese style n_n.

I think that it will be Mexican this year, very traditional.

  8. Waah, I love Polyvore too, is a shame that I can’t buy most of the things there (the shame of living in the ass of the world xD)
I’m going to the beach on New Year, to my family’s house. My boyfriend is going to be there and probably two other friends, so we are going to drive to Valparaiso (a very big city-port), and see the biggest firework show in Chile, and then to a party…or maybe we’re going to stay in the beach till sunrise…I don’t know but I’m excited :D!
No clue about what I’m gonna wear. My mom is going to give me clothes for Xmas, though :P

    <3 fran · Dec 20, 04:33 AM · #
  9. My boyfriend and I are moving into a live/work studio on Jan 1, so I’ll be wearing my comfiest shoes and my ugliest jeans. (Wah) And then we have to build walls and storage units, paint and make the loft liveable. And then maybe drink some champagne.

    <3 Jen · Dec 20, 05:09 AM · #
  10. Wow some rather cool outfits there!!!! I’m spending the New Year in Tokyo (rather than England), so it’s going to be awesome!! No idea what I’m going to wear, it depends on what I take. I’d like to wear this dress but I don’t think I’m going to be able to….

    http://fashion-by-student.blogspot.com/2007/12/flapper-20s-style.html

Check it out!! But for a 14 hour flight where it might get lost? Maybe not…

  11. I have to say, do you know what my favourite feature of Polyvore is? It keeps track of all the ‘items’ you use, in every ensemble you put together. It’s been really helpful because I’m beginning to see recurring colours, styles and shapes in the things I’m picking which is helping me fix up my own real-life wardrobe! Polyvore could be a very useful tool for people who (like me) don’t know where to start sorting out their wardorbes or going shopping!

PS I did by the turban in red and it’s AWESOME.

    <3 MJ · Dec 20, 05:20 AM · #
  12. I must have those Ray-Ban glasses frames. Any idea where I can get them?! I’d really appreciate it.

I have no idea what I’m doing for New Years but I know I want get all dressed up.

    <3 Alexandra · Dec 20, 06:14 AM · #
  13. oh my gosh! this website is going to be the death of me, i can see it now…

i don’t know what i’m doing for new year yet! i was going to go to berlin, but i can’t afford it this year. i’m thinking about going down to london.

    <3 sophie~ · Dec 20, 06:29 AM · #
  14. The Luella GEEK! print brings out the GEEK! in me, big time. (What with that being the title typeface of a My Bloody Valentine EP, strangely enough called “GEEK!”) That’s a lovely monochrome outfit, I like it.

    <3 nana · Dec 20, 08:23 AM · #
  15. Polyvore is so cool! I want to use it for my style journal! :P
Hopefully I’m wearing a bathing suit for New Years – I’ll want to jump into a pool once the clock strikes twelve. I love living in a tropical climate! :D

    <3 Valerie · Dec 20, 08:34 AM · #
  16. polyvore is really cool but it drives me absolutely nuts! or mayhaps, it’s because i’ve just come to grips that i’m a warm spring and i am getting major headaches trying to dress for it.

    <3 de Profundis · Dec 20, 09:07 AM · #
  17. OOOooh, I love those Chloe knickerbockers ( I love that word!), I hadn’t realised you could windowshop anywhere with polyvore – that is clever.

    <3 Nic · Dec 20, 09:21 AM · #
  18. i LOVE polyvore! i’ve been playing with it ever since you introduced it on your blog and oh, it is so much fun (http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/profile?id=108200)

    <3 stephanie · Dec 20, 09:44 AM · #
  19. polyvore is kiiinda fun, but it’s so long having to flick through everything in the unknown!

Which site are the rayban glasses from?

My fave is number three =)

    <3 maya · Dec 20, 09:47 AM · #
  20. I ADORE the sequin beret/Luella bag/Oxford outfit!! It’s the epitome of geek chic – which I am totally down with.

However, my New Year’s tradition is to stay home and watch DVDs, so a highly glamourous outfit is not really necessary. But hell, maybe I’ll wear one anyway! :)

    <3 Nadia · Dec 20, 10:18 AM · #
  21. I had absolutely NO idea that polyvore existed… and I am now in LOVE with it!

Ahh! I’ve been playing for HOURS!!!

    Yay =)

    You’re a darling =)

  22. I won’t be going to any kind of event on New Year’s Eve (let me explain: I live in Edinburgh, where January 2’s newspapers are likely to contain sentences such as “this year’s street party ended with only XX casualties and XX arrests”... sounds lovely, doesn’t it?), but I would like to do something symbolic by myself to let go of the old year. I’m not exactly sure what, but in the days leading up to NYE I will be going through all my stuff and getting rid of everything that symbolises things I don’t want to have in my life any more.

    <3 Alice · Dec 20, 10:44 AM · #
  23. I had no idea about polyvore… now, I’m so addicted! Can’t answer… post… must create… more outfits…

    <3 audrey · Dec 20, 10:48 AM · #
  24. I’m terrifyingly embarassed that I’ve not yet been addicted to this site!

Love the teal/black and the ChloĆ© ensembles you put together. :) The first one irks me because of the texture of the leather and the fabric of the skirt – but I bet you’d pull it off.

    xoxo.

    <3 Miss Elle · Dec 20, 10:52 AM · #
  25. I always love the outfits you put together :) I covet those spectator platforms with the third outfit. Too bad I’m broke at the moment to buy anything new. (Not that I could afford those right now, being a college student. One day though….)
I already have a closet full of stuff I’ve yet to wear, anyways….probably why I’m broke!

P.S. I really want a turban but I am having a hard time finding cute ones online…do you (or anyone else) know of any stores that are carrying some other than Topshop, preferably one based in the States? As soon as I save some funds I wanna buy one. I’m in that agonizing process of growing my hair out, so things are getting boring. I need a cute turban before I cut it all off again!

    <3 Erin B. · Dec 20, 11:12 AM · #
  26. Love the outfits! And the website. I forsee some serious time wasting in the future. It’s all the delight of finding new clothes and putting an outfit together without the money-spending party. Brilliant.

    <3 Lux · Dec 20, 11:16 AM · #
  27. I want a turban too… hard to find in Auckland though! So if anyone knows a store that ships to New Zealand, you’ll have my love forever.

    <3 amber catch · Dec 20, 12:21 PM · #
  28. These are fantastic! You should post a link to your Polyvore so that we can see ALL the fabulous outfits you come up with ;) hehe.!

I’m not sure what I’m going to be doing for New Year’s yet…probably just doing something with a close friend, or my dad. No one has any parties planned, which is a shock. Because of that, I’ll probably just skip the dressing up part of New Year’s because if I was just spending time with my dad, it wouldn’t be practical to get all dolled up. It is tempting though!

    <3 Elizabeth · Dec 20, 12:33 PM · #
  29. fran — Your NYE plans sound great! Hopefully your momma will give you something cool that you can wear :>

Jen — Ahh, but starting the year in your new home is pretty amazing! I’m quite jealous, actually!

Bouncing Evil Ginner — That dress is fantastic! You should DEFINITELY wear it on NYE in Tokyo, but use your noggin — pack it in your carry-on luggage.

MJ — Yeah, I noticed that feature! Pretty cool. That site made me realise how VERY much I love Rick Owens. Mmmmm.

Alexandra — Your wish is my command! http://www.bestbuyeyeglasses.com/ray-ban-rx-5112/20138.html

Alice — That’s awesome. Maybe you should cook yourself an amazing meal & then have a bubble bath alone, with candles & stuff in a dark bathroom. Take a glass of champagne into the bathroom with you & toast yourself at midnight!

Erin B. — Turbans are hard to find, but if you do a little Ebaying, you’ll probably find something which works for you.

amber catch — Topshop ships everywhere :>

  31. if i could wear the outfit with the geek bag, i would be deliriously, obnoxiously happy forever.
apart from i’ve never had a good new year’s, and this year i am stuck in hamilton again. working retail = no thanks.

  32. I’m probably going to spend my New Year’s in New York City! As for what I’ll wear, probably my black H&M dress, red tights, black lace slippers, and houndstooth coat.

  34. I thought Wists were cool, but actually being able to put outfits together is pretty cool, I might have to try out that site!

  35. ohman. i love that geek! outfit. they actually sell sequinned berets much like that one at cotton on. i bought from from a melbourne store the other week, so look there if you want one!
this NYE...i think we’re having a house party with a friend. her house parties are always cool; she’s an art student so she’ll set up giant canvases and all her friends go nuts with paint.
    happy new year!
    xx

  36. Great outfits and ideas!

I really love the stack of bracelets by Jessica Kagan Cushman and the Luella Geek bag. And the Tiffany sapphire & diamond ring set in platinum is to die for!

  37. That site is fantastic.

New Years for me shall be spent in pyjamas, with some boutique beer/red wine, a cheese platter, olives, lots of condiments and crackers, DVD’s, video games and my husband all together in the lounge room!
I’m not one for parties… but a party of 2 I can handle!

  38. I am going to go all out this year. I’ve had a nasty year of illness and dressing down so it’s time to pretty it up a notch I think!

I’m so glad I came across this beautiful site of yours – I’ve been stylistically stuck in a rut and iCiNG has inspired me to do a bit of a personal stock take.

Thanks a bunch Gala, you’re the keenest.

You definitely have a talent for this!

  42. i think i want every single thing here – though i’d be happy with just the pucci glasses and the birkin ! one day they shall be mine! ... possibly after my first successful bank heist ;)

i’m having a relatively quiet new years this year, so i think a bath with/in champagne wearing terribly gaudy jewellery will be in order …

Thanx Gala! Now I can communicate what I would be wearing if I had the spare cash…

  44. Hey Gala, thanks for introducing Polyvore! I’m in love~
Mind posting your polyvore username so I can add you as a contact? (If not I understand.) :D Mine is “Pawleeen~” ^^.
Take care, have a fantastic holiday!

  45. Those outfits you made are so cute! Although, I can only see myself wearing the fifth one or a mix of the fifth one and the third one. That carousel necklace in the first one is so adorable!

I just wanted to say that I recently found your page eariler this week while looking for unnaturally colored hair, and I absolutely adore your site and style! Haha, I’ve already lost track of how many of your articles that I’ve read. Keep it up, girl!

  46. Hey Gala,
Those outifts are awesome!! I just moved back from a stint in Spain and I was really down until I found your sight…finally an american site with unique fashion advice. Another great idea for an NYE outift which was real sexy over in Europe is black tights, with shorter black shorts (preferably dressy ones), a sexy white button up blouse, gold hoop earrings and lots of gold dangles, topped with black silk gloves (h&m). Finish the outfit off with some patent leather pumps and if you are daring enough a european style tophat for ladies!!

    <3 shirla · Dec 31, 01:48 PM · #
  47. Wow, cheers for showing us this Gala.
I have tonsilitis and am stuck in bed for a week… now, you’ve given me something to do.

    Happy NY all!!!
