Fashion Darling #001
[ 10 August 2007 ]
I just got the okay from Cosmpolitan, so here’s my first column in its entirety!
I’m on the page after Rachel Zoe‘s style column! Pretty incredible…
I have to tell you, switching mediums (& writing styles) like that is much harder than it looks! Initial teething problems aside, I’m currently writing my next column for them & am looking delightedly to the future! Thanks Cosmo, I heart you!
(Oh — & feel free to write & tell them how much you LOOOOVE me! Haha!)
Super-love & cupcakes,

I love it! You have the same distinct voice you use on iCiNG, but you also sound like a well-seasoned Cosmo writer. Congratulations! I can’t wait to see next month’s column!
love it! Same Gala voice and pov only paper-ized!.... so now all you lucky Ozzie’s can read your amazingness of the train or bus or well anywhere easier!
awesomeeee! <3
Oh, well done. Great job!! Thank you so much for posting this.
Kristen — Aww, thanks honey!
Nicola — It’s SO exciting to think that some of my work is now in a portable format! It’s kind of why I like doing podcasts, because it means people can take me with them!
immie — Smooch!
Nadine — My pleasure, treasure! My mother has been running from bookstore to bookstore trying to find it & it sounds like it hasn’t hit your shores yet! The good news is that I’ll be able to publish all my columns on here, so no one will miss out!
Gala – this is absolutely brilliant. Does Australia have their own version of Cosmo like we do in the UK, or is this in the American one?
It is brilliant that you’ve managed to make your boots last 11 years. I thought I was doing well with 8 years.
oh gala, be proud. be very proud of yourself.
podcasts? you have podcasts? i had no idea…
congratulations on your 1st article! so exciting for you… :)
wish we could get it in canada.
CatherineL — Yeah, this is the Australian/NZ edition. I think there are something like 50 versions worldwide? (Mind-boggling!) Thank you, I’m glad you like it! Like I said, writing in this style was a little tough, but I think I’m getting my head around it… Also, I don’t know how I’ve managed to make them last so long! I wear them ALL the time, I think they’re just exceptionally well-made & durable.
Kiki — Aw, merci beaucoup! xx
krissy -- Yes, I do! Click the tag which says 'podcast' in the menu on the left! I haven't done many, does anyone have any suggestions of topics or anything they'd like to hear? & thank you! You might be able to get it at an international magazine shop, though probably not for a little while...
Yay! That’s awesome. Remember us when you’re rich and famous, eh? ;)
If only I had all my clothes with me so that I could pick an incognito outfit, woe.
oh my GOD i’m totally your whore!!! (and i also speak like a gay man) the column is fabulous and i’m so proud of you!! yay!!
amazing and you totally deserve it!
i just got a 12 month subscription to cosmo so i look forward to reading your column each month!
its about time people start recognizing your brilliantness =D

CONGRATULATIONS!!
I loved the article & I’m definitely writing to Cosmo. I want this column in the US version!!!
Love you tons & keep up the awesomely good work!
Kisses
hizzah!!! congratulations ms. darling! well done.
FANTASTIC article! Go you, lady-miss!
That’s freakin’ AWESOME!
And I know exactly what you mean with the different styles of writing…I’m in my senior year at Uni and half my time is spent writing scholarly articles and the rest is writing for a local rag…it’s like I’m developing some kind of writing schizophrenia:)
Thanks for making me laugh and develop a new found appreciation for my grandpa’s cardi!
Great article, Gala! I’m sure Cosmo’s readers will love you just as much as we do! :)
MK’s outfit is soooo gorgeous, and I love yours, too! :D
i love it! congratulations on your first article =)
haha, they’re aaaalll up in arms over at ohnotheydidn’t about being called trashy. someone posted an entry with your article and circled the part where you mentioned ohnotheydidn’t, if you didn’t see it already!
Oh, so congrats! Yaaay Gala! Is a print article longer or shorter than the average iCiNG article?
oh how i adore it!!
eee, gala! i’m so proud of you :D i love that you linked ONTD too! hee!
xoxo
Really great article, especially how you linked to ONTD and how your IO outfit can be comfortable and cute and whatnot. But you stated that you could pair your IO outfit with skinny jeans. You have said many many times that you hate yourself in skinny jeans. I would like to point out your last article for the site, talking about keeping your individuality in a relationship. Please PLEASE keep your individuality in your relationship with cosmo.
I love you please don’t hate me.
You did such an incredible job girl! Much deserved congratulations! I think it was extremely well written, witty and relatable!
Oooh, how awesome…so glad things are happening for you! It’s all about that Virgo drive and willpower!
i hope Borders carries Australian Cosmo! great article, but of course.
Excellent…am gonna hunt this down in London!!!
Supah kawaii love being sent your way _
You are one amazing writer GD!!! xoxo
Goodness, I am SO happy for you! It’s such a dream to get paid to write about what you absolutely love. In a way I’m also so proud of you because I understand all the hard work you had to endure to get to where you are today, you’re a true inspiration and a wonderfully unique addition to this boring redundant world, to sum it up in cheesy language: you go girl!!
fabulous!! it must be soooo exciting to be published in a print magazine! yay!! :D kudos and keep us abreast of your columns… ;)
That must be the coolest thing for you! A big congrats is in order!!
Though I agree with Caitlin, I guess you have to write for the whole Cosmo audience, but I was expecting something that was more about your agenda, almost like in SATC when Carrie writes for vogue and has to stifle herself. I thought they chose you because of your individual style and interests, not to write about celebs, which are already covered way too much in magazines! I love your writing and style though, hope you’re ok with some constructive criticism?
Nice job! Congrats on having your first column published! Can’t wait to read more! =)
it’s perfect! i can’t wait for the next! i am very glad you could share it on here.
anna — Wow, that’s amazing, thanks!
Mari — You are the best, that is totally adorable of you, haha! I would love to be in the US version as well!
sarah frost — Yeah, I saw that, my reply is here: http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/14506401.html?thread=1680100513#t1680100513
Chooky — MUCH shorter! They initially wanted about 700 words (which is nothing) & now their layout has changed so their sub-editors had to be cut every column to about 400, which is why it reads like it does, eep!
Caitlin Marie — In the piece, I was trying to give other people ideas for how they could wear the IO. I’m not a fan of skinny jeans, but on some people they work, & almost everyone has them in their wardrobe (the Cosmo readership especially will). Anyway, like I said, I’m still working out how I fit in there, so.
selina — Writing for Cosmo is completely different. Since they’re a monthly magazine, they want their content to be relevant to the time it’s being published in. Therefore, my column HAS to pivot around either celebrities, catwalk or something I’ve noticed recently. It’s been tricky because I’m not really interested in celebrities or catwalk, but that’s just the way it has be done for now.
Hey, did you find the pic of MK or did they? and did you have to ‘buy’ it off the photographer? or get rights to it? or did they just take care of it all for you?
Anna Rose — I found it initially (on some Olsen fan site) & then sent them a link to it so they knew what I was talking about. I didn’t have to do anything else, so I assume they bought rights/took care of it in general!
oh my! we will have to start calling you Carrie! well done, I will have to start reading Cosmo now.
I didn’t know how you’d go being new and all to the magazine but I have to say, you’re column was awsome! I usually pass all the boring stuff but a read every word of your, I really needed tips on how to look ‘effortless’. nice work girl, cosmo is lucky to have you part of the team ;)
Miss Dot — Hee hee, HOW CONVENIENT, since I am working on building my collection of fabulous shoes! ;>
eri — Thank you so much! Kiss kiss!
I tried to find this issue of Cosmo over here in NZ…
It seems the NZ version of the Australia/NZ edition is completely different to the Aussie version of the Aus/NZ edition. WTF?!
Our August 2007 Cosmo has Jessica Biel on the front cover, and no Gala Darling inside! :( I found Rachel Zoe’s column, which had a huge Pic of MK Olsen, not unlike the pic in yours… but your column wasn’t in there.
Am I going mad??
Ritalin: I share your frustration/confusion, honey. Presumably the SEPTEMBER issue is still in trans-Tasman transit.
I am stumped too, no Gala to be found in NZ cosmo !!!!
I felt like I was turning insane ?
Ritalin & Frenchie — My mother is in the same position as you, it’s not out yet! You could maybe ask someone at a newsagent when their September issue will hit the shelves. I’m amazed at how much of a lag time there is, though!
Hi Gala!! I read your first article in Cosmo yesterday (I just zoomed in & zoomed in on the pic til I could read the text) and today I find myself wearing some kind of an incognito outfit. I’m out to do “practical” things and it is raining. Well as practical as things can get for an eccentric like me considering I am posting this comment on my Macbook in a park under a (thankfully!) roofed belvedere while it is POURING RAIN all around me! hahaha!
The outfit was totally improvised on the spot & comprises of (sorry no picture, had to leave the house)
+knee-lenght straight cut navy blue corduroy skirt
+a very inconspicuous blue t-shirt with a white cami underneath (I usually wear very bright colors)
+white leggins with black polka-dots
+charcoal knee-high cotton socks (I discovered it is better to cover your legs fully when it rains…..) the leggins & socks stop at jointure
+casual black sneakers
+a dark pin-striped denim vest
and my black umbrella that says: VPP which you can interpret as “Very Prestigious Person” :) or in my case sometimes “Very Psychotic Person” :) actually it’s from an oil refinery and the VPP is for Vigilance – Prudence – Protection. But I like to play the VIP game & replace the middle P with whatever comes to mind : from pretty to poor to perky to posh to…....... you get the idea :)
Well I better post this before my free wifi access runs out, I think there is a time limit but this is so cool! we can access the net on wifi from parks all over the city!! I used to has to bus to a mall & there, they blocked access to youtube & photo upload sites… it was a nightmare to update my LJ, etc.
Hope you are having a grand day (or night, at this hour for you)
au revoir
gala!
i read this in cosmo and then i was compelled to visit galadarling.com
i’m glad i did. you’ve given me a much more positive view on life.
smiles :)
You are pretty incredible. I’m pretty sure we have very similar qualities. I enjoy your site very much! <3
