  4. that’s it, i’m picking up cosmo!
i really need to practice my cat’s eye, I usually end up looking like a 50-something wino. * le sigh *
    Good tips Gala!

  5. Wow!!! I love your column!! I wish I could get Australian Cosmo here in Mexico * le sigh *

  6. natasja — No problem! As long as you have the right tools (mentioned in the column), with a bit of practise, you’ll be a pro!

emily — Haha, I was initially basing my column around Ms. Winehouse but since she has had so much bad press recently, we had to change it ;>

Kelly — Yay! Thanks for your support. & it’s really not that hard, you just need to keep trying.

Juls — You could always print it out & slip it in your copy of U.S. Cosmo ;D !!

  7. Great tips! I never thought to match it to my eyebrow length.
Interesting you chose Dita as an example and not Winehouse. I “wonder” why.. :X !!

  9. I’ve been seriously grooving on cat eyes lately, it’s such a quick way to look polished! Well, that’s assuming you’ve got the “one solid line” thing down pat… a talent that can come and go, depending on how the morning is going.

I hate to move this discussion off-topic, but I was thinking about your Summer fashion inspiration board, and I couldn’t help but think that maybe the written works of F. Scott Fitzgerald would be a good study guide. ;)

  10. People always say that liquid liner is much tougher to use than pencil, but is that always true? I’m asking because every time I try pencil liner (not to do the cat eye thing, just regular-style!), it either ends up nowhere near my lashline, or else doesn’t even mark at all. D: Obviously I’m doing something wrong, but I can’t help feeling like “hey, I’m good at painting, so maybe I should give the liquid stuff a shot, at least it’ll show up when I use it …” What say you, Gala?

    <3 Jorden · Oct 2, 11:47 AM · #
  11. Sarah — I have actually never read anything by F. Scott Fitzgerald, does that make me poorly-read? ;>

Jorden — Pencil is bollocks, it doesn’t wear properly & it is much harder to get right. It also smudges a lot more. I don’t really use liquid liner either though, Fluidline is kind of like a paint or paste in a little pot.

  12. AAAaah, the cat’s eye! I love it, too and have been experimenting around with it a bit. I came to the same conclusion as you, Gala, the best, longest lasting and easiest thing is a gel liner in a pot and a decent brush. I have a nice plum shade, “Violet Ink” by Bobbi Brown and their eyeliner brush and I have to say that the investment really was worth it. (Also, with a brush like that, moistened a bit, you can turn all your nice eyeshadows into liners!)

Another thing I’d like to share here is that since I’ve got quite small eyes, I don’t start the line in the corner of my eyes, but rather a little bit inward from above the pupil. (If that description makes sense …) If you draw the line really thinly there and then broaden it out a bit toward the outer corner it looks classic and like the “real deal” without weighing your eyes down too much or making them appear too small, if you have the same “problem” as me.

  13. Thank you for this, Gala! I’ve wanted to try lining my eyes but have had no luck with kohl pencils (make me look frightening), so it’s really good to know about the MAC product. Btw, the byline photo of you is fabulous!

    <3 Alice · Oct 2, 03:17 PM · #
  14. Oh! Thank you so much for scanning and posting that—you’ve got some great tips there! I wore cat eye makeup continually all last winter and spring, but I used a pencil rather than the liquid stuff because I could never quite master it. I think I’ll have to try it again. :)

I love how at the end of the article you mention about how you don’t advocate following trends—I just love that you can put that in a big publication. :) I know with the cat eye look I was doing it because I wanted to—even though several people thought it was just odd (but to be honest most of my friends and even strangers thought it was fab!!). hehe. I can be such a style rebel—which is why I love your blog!

Keep on inspiring, Miss Gala—you do a great job! :D

  15. great article :) I’ve being doing the cat eye look for a while…I love it, I was always scare of those liquid eyeliners but when I decided to be brave and buy one of them, the lady from the shop recommended me the most fine pencil to avoid mistakes and I haven’t had any problem with it :P

  16. It must be so exciting to see yourself in print!

    <3 Georgi · Oct 2, 08:23 PM · #
  17. That’s a good idea n_n

  18. Not poorly-read, just on the cusp of discovering something wonderful! Seriously, start with This Side of Paradise and baby, DON’T. STOP. THERE. Jazz, blue-blood snobbery, tennis, the horrible pain of being a member of the upper class? It’s all there. And more. You’re in for a treat.

  19. dita von teese is fantastic and so is your cat’s eye

    wonderful article =D!

  20. Did the egyptians rock the cat eye look before the goths? ;)

Hey, there is an article idea! Make-up through the ages..

  21. Great ideas, ladies!

Casey — Haha, I like that I can say it in print too! I have to say, working with Cosmo is pretty amazing, they really have their shit together & are very flexible.

Sarah — Hmmm, okay, maybe I’ll make reading F. Scott Fitzgerald part of my summer routine… !

    <3 Gala · Oct 3, 03:53 AM · #
  22. Oh no F.Scott Fitzgerald! He’s the author of one of my novels that I did a study on this year, The Great American. A good read and, oh the imagery! For months later everything became related back to The Great Gatsby in general conversation. Now we groan when it’s mentioned! To be sure though, a good read!

  25. Ah, I love it when something I’ve been doing for years becomes fashionable! Liquid liner is the way forward, I’ve tried loads but I have to admit the UK brand Rimmel’s professional liquid liner is great, got a proper thin little brush so you can get really accurate with it, I don’t like those ones with the sort of spongey pointy ends. In the past my friends have asked me to do it on them but I never can, I get it near their eye and it freaks me out that their eyes are so different to mine! I’m going to carry on the cats eye look even if it stops being fashionable again, it rocks :) Xxxxxxx
