Gala's Going Out Playlist
[ 7 June 2008 ]
I think what you listen to as you get dressed, put on your make-up & tart yourself up is of utmost importance. Now that I have speakers in my apartment (thanks, landlords!), great music has become an essential part of my primping & preening routine again. I think it helps set the tone of the evening, help pick up your energy & best of all, makes you smile & dance!
Here’s what I listened to tonight as I dressed up.
What are your favourite songs to dress up to?
Super-love & cupcakes,
Gala ![]()

I’m such a geek; at the moment Viva La Vida by Coldplay. It just makes so happy! :)
my favorite artists to dress up to are uffie, peaches, dirty princess, & ellen allien. grrl power!
i wonder if i’m the only one listening to cheezy j-pop. hahaha!
hope you have fun tonight! xox
allisun — I used to be so obsessed with Peaches! Years ago, I wrote her a letter & safety-pinned it inside a pair of knickers & threw it on stage when she was performing. She picked it up & rubbed it on her crotch. It made my month. Hahaah!
gilda — I have never been able to get into j-pop for some reason! & thanks! I’m waiting for my ride, haha.
ooo When I’m getting ready, this is my playlist:
1. Anything by Michael Jackson
2. Bon Jovi
3. Destiny’s Child
4. Whitney and Michael Bolton. Just for fun!
5. Usher
They are all such ‘get in the mood to party’ songs!
Makes me wanna dance!
i always listen to techno music when im getting ready except i always get distracted and end up dancing instead LOL!
I usually listen to a lot of BT when I get dressed. It makes me feel great, plus most of his stuff inspires great outfits.
If not BT, then it could be anything from a video game soundtrack to downtempo Japanese Rap. However, I’ve been listening to No Doubt’s “Rock Steady” album lately. It’s surprisingly refreshing while getting ready for the day…or night. :)
Superstar- Lupe Fiasco
Scissor Sisters- Can’t Decide, Kiss You Off
Cobra Starship- Damn You Look Good & I’m Drunk
Justin Timberlake- Sexyback
Gym Class Heroes- Clothes Off!
Timbaland- Scream (Feat. Keri Hilson & Nicole Scherzinger)
Though, yeah, I end up dancing around my room half made-up. X)
Great idea!
My best friends and I were just listening to a new CD I made yesterday as we tarted ourselves up for a night on the town!
I love:
Muscles:
‘Sweaty’:
youtube.com/watch?v=v7Ho2eYnaW…
‘Ice Cream’:
youtube.com/watch?v=2gM2bfHa82…
‘Chocolate, Raspberry, Lemon and Lime’:
youtube.com/watch?v=whkInc1QfO…
The Presets:
‘Talk Like That’:
youtube.com/watch?v=KL
‘Are You The One’:
youtube.com/watch?v=qpN819k4sQ…
The Potbelleez:
‘Don’t Hold Back’:
youtube.com/watch?v=WxAXmHa0
Mostly it is Franz Ferdinand for getting ready. However, when I come home without having danced enough during the night, then while derobing and taking off my make-up it’s most definitely George Michael’s ‘For The Feet’, which is the dancier part of his best hits album.
the smiths, social distortion and queen! always & forever
I have to have music playing when I get ready in the mornings or before going out. It lifts my mood, and gets me moving!
At the moment I usually listen to:
Sublime – Caress me down
Justin Timberlake – Lovestoned
Blink-182 – Dammit
Avril Lavigne – Everything back but you
Elemeno P – Better days
Beastie Boys – Body Movin’
Paramore – Misery Business
Hmm, now I want to go home and get ready to go out, so I can listen to them again! :)
lately, it’s been all about peaches, billy idol, lamb, beck, 7 year bitch, sleater kinney, adam and the ants and ugly duckling … which, when i list it like this, sounds like such a mishmash. oh but how i loves it … all of the above makes me incredibly nostalgic as well :)
For a typical school day? My fave metal bands. Testament, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath ect. I always like to look like Im coming to own/destroy the day, in a good way, of course.
i loveee playing music while getting ready to go out. I usually listen to:
-Justice
-Architecture in helsinki
-wolfmother
-queens of the stone age (when i heard them i usally dance and start feeling soo freaking sexy, josh homme has that impact on me :P )
-sweet coffee
-royksopp
-Louis XIV
-kylie Minogue
Claire- thanx for posting those videos i really liked the songs! :)
Camera Obscura and Bob Dylan!
^ =] No probs!
-“D.A.N.C.E.” by Justice
-“Atlantis to Interzone” by Klaxons
-“That’s My DJ” by Girl Talk
-“Breakin Up” by Rilo Kiley
-“Say Aha” by Santogold
-“Stronger” by Kanye West
-“Heart of Glass” by Blondie
-“Four Minutes” by Madonna and Justin Timberlake ft. Timbaland
-“Grace Kelly” by Mika
Just a couple of my favorites. :)
Anything by M.I.A. and Girl Talk makes me feel sassy.
They’re both great for workout music, too!
I love The Roots! Have you heard their new album Gala? It rules! I forgot how awesome it is to dress up to music, I rediscovered it on Friday night and I rocked out to The Mint Chicks; Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No! and it was awesome.
you can’t go past good old riot grrrl music to get ready to.
I like to listen to music that makes me happy and bouncy.
Popular choices include:
The Presets
Pop Levi
Robots in Disguise
you cant go past some brazillian flavour such as:
bonde do role and cansei de ser sexi!
Hmm, it varies drastically depending on where I’ll be going, but tonight’s romp was preluded by a Gwen Stefani/Rob D. mash-up — songza.com/z/iend89 — & “Atomic” by Blondie.
glory box – portishead
how many more times – led zeppelin
fire woman – the cult
never met a girl like you – edwin collins
the loved one – INXS
black milk – massive attack
tick – yeah yeah yeahs.
also: daft punk, the gossip, wolfmother, the parlor mob, & nicole atkins.
I veer between my favourite punk bands from my teenage rebellion days (Operation Ivy, Alkaline Trio, Hot Water Music, Rival Schools) and terrible cheesy pop (Girls Aloud, Wham!, Hanson, Barry White) and classic rock anthems (Journey – Don’t Stop Believin’) and hip-hop/rap (NWA, Beastie Boys, Coolio, Dizzee Rascal)
I have the coolest taste in music :D
I like to get dressed to Edith Piaf if I’m in a classy mood. ;) If just getting dressed and needing to start my day on the proper foot, anything I can shake my booty to is fine.
Usually this….
A Dream – Common (The dude from the Roots!!)
Now That You Got it – Gwen Stefani
Come on Girl – TAI CRUZ FT LUCIANA
Headlock – IMOGEN HEAP
The Walk – IMOGEN HEAP
Hide & Seek Tiestos Remix – IMOGEN HEAP
Taper Jean Girl – KINGS OF LEON
The Bucket – KINGS OF LEON
Praise the Music – THE CIGARRES (If you haven’t heard this please download its AWESOME its like ska/reggae/punk upbeat swing best song to dance to ever)
Out of Focus – STATE OF MIND FT CONCORD DAWN
On My Mind – KORA
Wearing my Rolex – WILEY
there’s this favourite song of mine by smap, called arigatou (thank you), which is just such a feel-good song, i love it.

and this song, called joy, buy one of japan’s cutest singers ever. total fashion icon and has a huge cult following, yuki!
gala, you’ll love this. one of the lines in the song is,“shinu made doki doki shitai wa!”
which means, i want to feel that doki doki feeling until i die! plus, the video is so darn cute and the song is catchy.
youtube.com/watch?v=4qK6gTjGeT…
mika!!
My booty shakers for when I’m getting ready or if I just feel down are;
Let’s Groove Tonight- Earth, Wind and Fire
Boogie Wonderland- Earth, Wind and Fire
Sex Machine- James Brown
Too Sexy- Right Said Fred
Flex- Dizzee Rascal
You’re One of My Kind- INXS
Jump and Move- Brand New Heavies
Deceptacon- Le Tigre
My People- Presets
eeeep! Too many!
M.I.A., electro house (Ministry of Sound albums!), Fantastic Plastic Machine and Polysics!
I actually like classical. Shostakovich, Ravel, Dvorak. Shostakovich is rather exciting, if I do say so myself ^^;; especially the misnamed “Waltz from Jazz Suite No. 2.” It was in the film Eyes Wide Shut, of Kubrick.
Tom Tom Club’s “Genius of Love”- on repeat!
M.I.A & D12.
Not necessarily just these, but that’s all I can think of at this late hour.
Depends where I’m going…but usually Robots in Disguise, The Ting Tings, The Wombats or Paramore. Though if the laptop is upstairs then I’ll just put my iTunes on shuffle and listen to whatever comes on.
100 Days, 100 Nights by Sharon Jones, Video by India Arie…after that, anything by:
Bloc Party
Ladytron
The Faint
The Velvet Teen
etc.
Hmm…I don’t really wear much makeup anymore. But I do dance to myself in the mornings!

The Minnow and the Trout-A Fine Frenzy
Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!-Abba
The Last Sunrise-Aiden
Hero/Heroine-Boys like Girls
Life Less ordinary-Carbon Leaf
Where’d You go-Fort Minor
AND....
that’s it.
I’m hearing impaired and sometimes hearing can be quite exhausting for me. Usually I use the time when I’m getting ready to resource in silence and sort of brace myself for the hearing aids and the ongoing sound assault…! Then I put on my hearing aids and I listen to music on the way to wherever I’m going! I’m starting to really like Death Cab for Cutie, I find that it makes nice, mellow summer night music.
Everybody Knows You Cried Last Night-the Fratellis
Anna-the Beatles
Burning Down The House-Talking Heads
Weird Science-Oingo Boingo
Separated by Motorways-the Long Blondes
Girls Who Play Guitars-Maximo Park
I’m A Rat-Towers of London
Sugar Ray
Am going to a milonga tonight, so obviously tango music! Am listening to a compilation called Tango Sensual at this very moment. Gotan Project is also good for getting in the mood …
(LOVE your blog, BTW)
Maiken — I LOVE George Michael. His Wham! days too. I think I would kick major ass at George Michael karaoke!
Ritalin — Body movin’, body body movin’! That song brings back memories of Channel Z!
Elizabeth Ilia — That’s hilarious, I love it! I once ran out of clothing & had to wear an XL Emperor hoodie on a 7am flight with a bunch of business men. It was illuminating to say the least!
Kristen — 4 Minutes is so good. I didn’t like it for a really long time but now I love it.
Pinkee — Rising Down, you mean? No! I need to seek it out. Thank you for the suggestion!
Sassy — You’re so right. I think Bikini Kill is probably one of my favourite bands of all time.
Joanne — Nubby Twiglet is also OBSESSED (I mean obsessed) with Journey, so you’re in excellent company!
gilda — Oh my goddddd. Shinu made doki doki shitai wa?! You have to teach me how to say it with the right accent. That is my new catchphrase. AAAAHHHH!! I LOVE IT!
Alex — James Brown & INXS & Le Tigre, what a fabulous mix!
Katoo — Oh wow, that’s really interesting. Is it tiring for you because you’re not used to do it? I guess it uses a large part of your brain, which must take its toll!
Lyra – oooh I looooove Katy Perry. She is fantastic!
All the best partAy music is pre-1979.
Anything that falls under Atlantic/Motown/Northern Soul is amazing – Chess and Stax have some classics too, (though southern soul is often less upbeat). Soul music has some fantastic, woman-empowering anthems. Some particularly good tunes:
“Soul Man”, Sam & Dave
“See Saw”, Aretha Franklin
“Rescue Me,” Fontella Bass
“Gimme Some Lovin’”, Spencer Davis Group
“Aint Too Proud To Beg,” Temptations
Then there’s T Rex, Doors, early Stevie Wonder (in fact, “Superstition” might be the ultimate party track), Beach Boys (really- try it!), David Bowie (lovelovelove), and just any original ska (the ‘original’ part being important… accept no imitations!!) Newer stuff – DJ Format & Abdominal. Love them (try Ill Culinary Behaviour: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgkU5f… — annoyingly, you have to skip to 1.23).
But best, all time getting ready track?
Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry. Oldie, cheesy, goodie.
I love waking up and getting ready to Thunderheist and Hypercrush! They get me dancing and totally pumped for the new day. Any body reading this should definitely check them out :)
Prince!
I saw him live last summer, he’s a sexy little man.
Claire A — I loooove Stevie Wonder (especially Sir Duke) & Bowie. I've just started listening to T Rex, too! Funny!
Emily — He is a sexy little man. I adore him!
i love your blogg, but God, your taste in music is awful.
Jetmira — Hahaha. I’m glad you think so!
Pixies
Janet Jackson
Missy Elliot (the album “...so addictive” works like a charm on any moods I’m having)
Beyonce (specifically “Get Me Bodied”)
Ting Tings
Gorillaz
Cake
Yay! T Rex kick ass. Marc Bolan was incredibly hot, too ;P
Check out “Tanx” – it’s a very underrated album!
Gala, I suppose hearing is this constant sorting job for me! What’s important, what’s not, what’s where… And I have to read people’s lips too, and concentrate on what they are saying, and who is talking if I’m in a group. BUT the advantage is that I have a special switch on my hearing aids that makes it so the hearing aids only receive a certain type of soundwave… If I have headphones one, I hear only the music! No outside distraction!
Omigosh going out music is such a MAJOR part of getting ready! Fo shizzle!![]()Whoop)
Mine is: – Closer by Nine Inch Nails – Low by Flo Rider – We share our mothers health- The Knife – The Bongo Song- Safri Duo – TKO- Le Tigre – Pour some sugar on me- Def Leppard – Killing in the name of- Rage against the machine – F*ck the Pain away- peaches
and anything by Minuit (I am on such a Minuit craze right now
i used to listen to the yeah yeah yeahs – date with the night every friday night before id go out and it was the best :D
right now.. im not sure anymore :\
Jetmira – I noticed you didn’t post your music preferences – something to hide maybe???
I haven’t listened to it for a while, but I used to really like playing Stellar*‘s ‘Every Girl’ when pre-party primping.
I love that everyone is talking about T-Rex – ‘Get it on’ is one of the top songs to get ready to! When I was at uni me and my best mate used to crank Hollaback Girl and run around being silly and burning every man is a 3km radius’ ears.
Now I have changed a little – Adrienne – I love listening to Closer when I am about to go out – also good (and hear me out on this one!) is a mashie of 50 cents ‘In Da Club’ And ‘Closer’ crazy but very dancable.
What else… D.A.N.C.E – Justice, Muscles (I love you, I want to have your babies), The Kinks, god, anything – my music taste has a crazy slipt personality and I can’t pick any one type to stick to!!
my all time favourite is a song called “wig in a box” from the “hedwig and the angry inch” movie soundtrack. just have a look at the lyrics and you’ll know why ;)
www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/hedwig…
Ooh, getting dressed up while listening to music is one of my favourite things in life! My list constantly changes (I am addicted to 70s music, rock and metal, so it fluctuates!), but a few favourites that I love are:
x Disco Inferno – The Trammps
x Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough – Michael Jackson
x Shake Your Groove Thing – Peaches & Herb
x Over and Over – Hot Chip
You should make a getting-ready-to-go-out muxtape!
I was getting ready last night and couldn’t find anything to get me in the right mood, so I could do with the help!
Right now it’s:

My list is infinite, but I’ll stop here.
orinoco — I’d love to, believe me! I’m a little iffy about uploading copyrighted music to Muxtape, just because I could get in trouble for it. That’s why I only ever upload remixes :>

Dude, I just wanna say that it’s so damn awesome that your getting ready music is all Hip Hop and R&B — that is so unexpected and hotttt!!!
Michelle — Haha. I LOVE hip hop! Especially conscious hip hop — I think it is the sexiest, most vibrant, fabulously uplifting thing ever.
Thanks to your 1979 post, I haven’t listened to anything but Mellon Collie, and the Radiohead albums The Bends and OK Computer. I am SO re-enamored, and super sad that Radiohead isn’t hitting Colorado on their tour!!

Hmn, this is a difficult one. The exact songs depend on however i’m feeling when I start to get dressed, but usually I prefer something fast, catchy, and fun to dance to!
I smiled when I read your style tips for June 8th because i’ve found that you’re right (as usual!), dancing before a mirror really does help brighten a bad mood. Experience has taught me that it is one of the best ways to feel confident and happy, and I will readily admit that I dance around as I get ready to go some place. It feels great to jump about to the beat, strike a pose, bust some ridiculous moves, mouth the words to the song (or actually sing along), and just generally be silly as I brush my hair and the like. While I don’t usually dance in the faux sexy style you suggested(okay, sometimes I do), the motions always makes me love who I am and become excited about life.
Recently my favorites have been:
- “Jump In The Line” Harry Belafonte – “Shady Lady” by Ani Lorak – “Song Number One” by Serebro – “Ninanajna” by Elena Risteska – “Shut Me Up” by Mindless Self Indulgence – “Mambo (greeklish version)” by Helena Paparizou – “Waterloo” by Abba – “Superstar” by Toy Box – “Do You Want To” by Franz Ferdinand – “Because We Can” by Fatboy Slim – “E-Pro” by Beck – “When I Grow Up” by the Pussycat Dolls
Courtney Love – “Celebrity Skin”
Metric – “Poster of a Girl”
Robots in Disguse – “DIY”/“Boys”/“Turn It Up”/“Arguments”
Ashlee Simpson – “Outta My Head (Ay ya ya)”/“L.O.V.E”
Britney Spears – “Piece of Me”
M.I.A – “Paper Planes”
Lykke Li Feat. Kleerup – “Until We Bleed”/“Little Bit”
Yelle – “Je Veux Te Voir”
Missy Elliott – “Work It”
The Knife – “Heartbeats”
Crystal Castles – “Crimewave”
Justice – “D.A.N.C.E”
Lo-Fi-Fnk – “City”
who says boys cant get pretty either ;]
