Gifting Yourself
[ 17 December 2007 ]

Are you going to buy something for yourself for Christmas?
I couldn’t help myself. Because I’d like to experiment with some new scents for 2008, I just did an order of samples from Lucky Scent. Danger, danger! I’m waiting on Vanille Divine des Tropiques by La Maison de la Vanille, U4EAHH! 2.43 by YOSH, The exact friction of stars by Pilar and Lucy, Peppermint by Comme des Garcons Series 5: Sherbet, Vanilla Champagne by Susanne Lang, Perfect Kiss by Creative Scentualization, Serendipitous by Serendipity 3 & Loukhoum by Keiko Mecheri. YUM! A different one for every day of the week, plus extra! They probably won’t be here in time for Christmas, but I don’t mind. I’m so excited anyway! ...& I’m trying to hold myself back from the Christian Louboutins at David Jones!
How about you? Is there a special something tempting you, or is it already sitting wrapped under the tree?
Super-love & cupcakes,

Things I Love Thursday

Every year I buy myself a Xmas dress, which I wear to my work night out, and on Xmas day for the family party. It makes me feel good, and I so enjoy breaking up the Xmas shopping with a bit of dress-buying! This year is a beautiful Grecian/1920s black georgette number from Xara. Very pretty!
Your perfumes sound lovely. I do hope you’ll be giving some reviews once they arrive!
I think I overindulge myself too much materialistically – especially over the past few months – but I think the greatest gift I’m getting this Xmas is going back home to Hong Kong after four dire months in Toronto. Normally I wouldn’t allow myself to get too excited, but I can’t help but smile to myself everytime I think about stepping off the plane and breathing in a lungful of polluted grey air.
Secondhand smoke, cocktails and dillydallying with friends in the night – here I come!
PS. The perfume sounds lovely, I’m glad you wrote an article about this because personally, the feeling of gifting yourself is completely different from receiving the gift from someone else. Both good, of course.
Have yourself a very merry little Xmas, Gala.
Peppermint by Commes des Garcons is loooovely! Smells preppy :-)
My gift to me is lots (!) of American Apparel stuff, took ages choosing it all and everything arrived fitting well and looking and feeling gorgeous, so many new outfit possibilities.
my gift will be making my husbands favorite pie, wearing his favorite dress and going out to show me off. then coming home to lots of sweet things.
then i hope for some time with ink and needles, but the dress and pie is cheaper. :P
I bought myself some boots, the L Word Season 4, Marie Antoinette, and a blog. ;)
I think it’s ridiculously important to gift yourself! You’re responsible for the majority of how WELL you turned out, your good decisions, and your passions. If that were someone else, you’d be showering them with gifts, too!
xoxo.
hehe i bought myself a lot of things … but i suppose “officially” i bought myself a black 1940’s wasp-waist jacket with a white portrait collar – however, there’s been a postage mix-up-y thing so i’m not sure i’ll get it in time for christmas – and some white driving gloves.
i’m a bit naughty and compulsive when it comes to clothing, anyway, so christmas is just another in a long line of excuses :)
I bought myself £100 worth of Espa products so i can re create the spa day i had over Xmas every day!!!
Gifts to yourself over Xmas are essential _
the best of the spice girls. because i’d be too ashamed to buy it for myself at any other time.
I already have the Bon Jovi tickets. I’d love to get some of my photos printed up poster-size. Or, if my family fail me completely, I will have to get myself the Flight of the Conchords DVD.
Clothes! My excuse at the moment is that they are an investment! Why? Because next year I don’t have to wear uniform to school (yay for 7th form). Also, I just bought some new snowboarding pants because they were cheap and I snowboard right through summer at an indoor snow park in Auckland. Today I bought a BEAUTIFUL skirt and a pair of pink shorts :-)
This year i gave myself an early xmas present i just bought a IMac and i love it the photobooth application is my new obsession
I’m hoping to buy myself a new tattoo for christmas/ new year, a beautiful little black ink tattoo inspired by egyptian mythology!
I am also giving myself another gift for christmas, making an emotional change in my life that is going to hurt but in the long term save my life.
I hope you have a wonderful christmas Gala!
I bought myself a new sweater and a boat-neck shirt. Because I’m boring like that. At the beginning of the month I also treated myself to Rocher chocolates and a Vogue! :)
This year since I had a job over the summer and saved all my money just so I could buy people Christmas gifts. I decided to treat myself and bought this amazing Micheal Kors bag; it was the last one. It looks delicious!
I always wait until after Christmas just incase my man or my mum buys my covetable item. But I really want this designer resin bangle with bees on it. It’s awesome!
Engineer Frye Boots, are pestering, and pestering my little head. I’m contemplating if $198 for a nice leather boot is something I should wait off on right now. Sigh, the holidays are a money war.
Oh, and seeing that you too enjoy vanilla scents, my mum bought me a little Christmas gift of Vanilla Vanille perfume from The Body Shop and it smells so delicious.
amypalko — You know I will, baby! & your dress sounds gorgeous. Yay!
Nic — Hooray! I love AA so much, hee. I want to do a big order!
Miss Elle — Amen to that!
Natalie — You MUST send pictures when your coat arrives! It sounds like an absolute stunner. Rawr!
katie — Oh, shame is silly. If you like the Spice Girls, you should shout it from the rooftops!
McCall Johnson — Good for you. Deciding to change your life is one of the best gifts you can give yourself :>
Sasha Parker — I want them too. I’m waiting until my next trip to the States to pick them up, though, as there is no Frye stockist in Australia! Grrr!
I’m going to buy myself a digital SLR with all the money I’m making doing insane Christmas hours (starting work at 8:30am on Boxing Day anyone?)...I can’t wait!
speaking of perfume I have been lusting after Blond Tabac by Aftelier forEVER….this is the description of it:
“VEry sexy on the skin with notes of cedarwood, tabacco, and lime.” Now if I could just $150, lol.
Mmmhh! Those scents really sound delicious! Well, this post comes at a perfect time, since I’ve just come back from a shopping trip – for ME. I also like to gift myself, and now I was in desperate need of a pair of new jeans. I also bought some ankle boots and a cardigan. (Problem is, I also saw a really great belt that I covet now as well … ;-)) Now I can start into the Christmas season and the New Year with some fresh outfit possibilities.
I bought myself half a new computer…and my boyfriend bought the other half. That was my Chrissy present from myself and from my boy!
Although I have already been using it for 3 weeks now!!!!
I love Christmas and I believe in spoiling yourself and others…
things that are tempting me right now – doc martin boots – a set of bongo drums – a ukelele
and i wouldn’t mind a way to celebrate my upcoming birthday that satisfies my birthday-hating ways, and my friend’s need to celebrate it!
i spent more money on myself than for anyone else, ooopppss haha. i bought £50 worth of cds, but then you can also look at it as a gift for the artists since i’m trying to buy more cds instead of downloading everything. yes i will look at it that way… ;)
My Christmas bonus this year is going on a Nintendo Wii, because I’ve finally realised that I will never go out to the gym, I don’t have room in my shared house for an exercise bike or anything like that. If playing on other peoples’ is anything to go by, if I buy a Wii I will spend a large amount of my time jumping around and otherwise being active, albeit in my living room!
I bought myself a BUNCH of shoes on amazon.com for Christmas. They were ALL dirt cheap (16.00-32.00) and I even wrapped some of them and out them under the tree. I also bought myself a pair of Steve Madden Kelton boots..but they may not arrive in time for Christmas. I am also coveting some black dresses to wear with leg warmers and my new boots and shoes..but I think that will have to wait until AFTER Christmas. Maybe I will get some gift cards!
my gift to myself is to finally (FINALLY) move to Los Angeles instead of spending yet another year in New York City
mmm… perfume..
I normally never get myself something for Christmas, but there’s a certain perfume that has been tempting me. It’s called Inner Grace by Philosophy. It’s smells gorgeous, and everytime I go to the mall, I go to Sephora to try some on. I just might get it for myself :)
My gift to myself is to give more presents to other people this year.
It sounds weird, but usually I am a total scrooge.
Well I’m leaving Britain behind, to party in Malta for new year, so a plane ticket and lots of new clothes, and a new pair of boots, some dermalogica and a beautiful mac gold glitter liner.
I’m good to me.
Also Lady Smaggle, I know that bracelet! I have been lusting after it for ages too.
I’ve bought myself perfume too!
And even better, its called ‘Ladyboy’!
I love it, it smells like sweetie bananas :D
Its also awesome because its all organic- a company called ‘B Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful’ does it. I’m sure you’ve heard of them- they’re like the make-up version of Lush!
EEE! Its Christmas! :D!!
My Christmas gift to myself is a boatload of American Apparel…even though I just went to their flea market sale. But, see, I need it! For New Year’s, a bunch of friends and I are going to New York City and I have NO WINTER CLOTHES! So I bought a 3-pack of leggings, a slouchy cardigan, a 3-pack of kneesocks, and three of their wonderful long-sleeve thermal shirts. I will probably end up buying more layer pieces…but here is my rationale: I love American Apparel. The pieces are flattering and well-made, and I need warmer clothes for my trip. I could go to Target or whatever and buy super cheap, but I’d hate what I bought! I’d rather spend a bit more money on items I KNOW I’ll love for a long time!
That being said, if I could manage to squeeze in a Tarina Tarantino cocktail ring, too, I’d be super pleased :x
I’m going to buy a pair of Steve Madden sling back black heels, loads of long leggings, some gorgeous black leather gloves that I saw last Friday at the mall, and some hats.
I just bought Touch of Pink by Lacoste and I looooove it n_n.
I wish that I could go to the states and buy an iPhone and a Tarina Tarantino bracelet.
Kisses.
I’m completely in love with a striped pair of sunglasses (a la Kanye West)! That would be my gift to myself- if I could find it!
depending on whether or not my family take my (not so) subtle hints, i’ll be buying myself victor & rolf’s ‘flowerbomb extreme’ for christmas (more vanilla-y than the original flowerbomb, delish!). i think treating yourself is sehr, sehr important :]
I’ve bought myself the first 2 books in the Griffin & Sabine series which are already wrapped in my faavorite paper and sitting under the tree. And I indulged myself and have been buying black phoenix alchemy lab perfumes. I have 6 imps coming from the lab and 2 bottles from ebay coming. :) I also just recieved Lolita Lempick sample from ebay that I haven’t tried yet. Perfumes seem to be a popular gift to get ones self this year. <3 and holiday themed hugs for you Gala!
I’m buying myself a pair of white chucks and since my boyfriend and I have been in a long distance relationship (2 years now) I’m making him doodle all over them, I’m making him do it when he comes to visit me for Christmas.
I haven’t really bought myself anything yet because money’s tight, but when I return to my parents’ for winter break, I’m going to splurge on a $13 game: Katamari Damacy. I played it at a friend’s house and am hopelessly addicted to the silly thing. :D
I always buy my own Christmas gifts…I just ask for money from people and then I get what I want. I’m not a big fan of surprises. :)
This year, I’m not spending too much on myself. I’m aching for a Moleskine, because I plan on starting a book of collages.
Everyone else’s ideas are so awesome! :D
hhhmmmm~ i haven’t bought my self gifting yet. but i’m going to get myself some OPI nailpolish (usually i buy really cheap crap, and dark nailpolish is really not something i want to go cheap on), a lady sov tshirt, & cute underwear with skulls on it.
+ my best friend is going to see the spice girls on tour so i’m bribing her to bring me back a tshirt!
I just bought myself some samples from lucky star too!
Profumum Thundra
Calypso St Barth Jala
Bois 1920 Agrumi Amari di Sicilia
Domenico Caraceni Loren
Calypso Christiane Celle Mimosa
L’Artisan Parfumeur L’eau de L’artisan
You all have amazing taste. But I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, haha!
i love gifting myself and as of late i’ve purchased:
~a super cute (and possibly sexy!) hot pink bra with lace detail from victoria’s secret — it’s sort of a push up but i find it irresistibly cute that the padding on the inside of the cup are hearts in varying sizes (it’s hard to describe, but i assure you it’s a cute detail)
~That Extra Half an Inch by Victoria Beckham — a book i bought because you said it was great and it really is! i cannot put it down, it has been by my side since i bought it
~brightly colored mechanical pencils, some of which i handed out to my friends so we could match while we did our school work!
~cute little highlighters so i can make my notes pretty without pestering my friend to borrow hers
i love small gifts for myself like these :D
My official christmas present for myself is the book Saturday Night Hat, by Eugenia Kim. I am brazilian and the book has no brazilian edition, so I had to import it from Amazon.com, which turns out to be quite expensive, even tough the book costs only 13 dollars :) I’m dying to learn how to sew some hats!
Then after christmas, when all the sales start I will gift myself with everything I like :D
I haven’t decided on my gift yet! I don’t have a job (damn you, immigration!) so I’m keeping my eyes open for a good bargain on something I’ve been wanting. I would take my Permanent Residency in a jiffy, I can tell you. What a great way to start off the new year in Canada! At this point, I’m eyeing a local spa to get a nice massage/mud bath combo…but we’ll see.
i HAVE gifted myself! i lucked out and found the boots i’d been lusting after (http://g-images.amazon.com/images/G/01/Shopbop/media/images/products/loeff/loeff2002210569/loeff2002210569_prod_medium.jpg)
for 1/4 the price—last pair, my size. i couldn’t not get them! i was going to save them until xmas but i just couldn’t wait :)
& i love your scent sampler idea!
I’ve been so curious and excited about Kiss Me Mascara but it’s $25! Maybe I’ll get it for myself for Christmas…
Gala, have you ever heard about this mascara? Any reviews? Is it worth it?
Merry Christmas!! xoxo!!
Who doesn’t love spoiling yourself for Christmas? ;D I’ve already bought myself a book for Christmas. It’s Sepulchre by Kate Mosse (who also wrote Labyrinth). And I also wish I had enough money to buy some skin care products from Ella Bache, some pretty flowers and black leather gloves. I spent most of my money on my family and friends already…If only I had gotten myself a job these holidays T^T
But I’m looking forward to a yummy family BBQ this Christmas!
Merry Christmas, Gala. I hope you have a great one!
~xoxoxo
i bought myself a little black dress & two pairs of earrings, a wicked cool bracelet & ring… i have been going crazy treating myself since i became single and realised that no significant other’s gonna be buying me a present anymore! haha!
i LOVE buying other people presents though… that’s all the fun in Xmas for me
x
I’m determined to get my dream dress on ebay soon. It is straight out of a dream I had years ago! I am willing to pay 200USD for it if I must.
I just ordered samples of Eau de Parfum by Josef Statkus, Corso Como by 10 Corso Como, Kyoto by Comme de Garcons, Padparadscha by Satellite, and Cuir Venenum by Parfumeria Generale. and I’ve yet to find gifts for my friends & family. I feel so guilty!
I couldn’t decide between my two loves – gadgets and handbags, so I bought myself a PS3 and a new Louis Vuitton. So much for saving money…
i’m getting my first ever paycheck this Christmas (which is rather embarassing since i’m already 17, but whatever…) so i’m buying myself a pair of shoes that i have been eyeing for months!
Two amazing dresses from Net-a-porter, that I have been lusting after forever. One is verrry pricey, but I plan to wear it at least once a week – it’s 100% wool and sleeveless, so I am going to layer it over lots of American Apparel turtleneck tees and wool tights. The other is bright green and on sale, and I have been lusting after it for six weeks now! Can’t wait to wear them!
I kind of gave myself a Christmas present today, which was taking time out of my long walk home, sitting in Princes Street Gardens, looking across to the castle in the sun, and eating nachos. However odd/unappealing it sounds, I’d been craving nachos ever since I had them for the first time in October.
Apart from messy faux-Mexican junk food, I haven’t really bought myself anything as a Christmas present, since I am not organised enough to have got presents for everyone else yet! Panic!
I’m still not sure what my Christmas present to myself is going to be. I do have a lot of dinners and plays and road trips booked for the holidays so I think I’m just going to enjoy those.
Already bought myself a new 2008 diary, might be getting a calendar tonight and I would love Marc Jacobs Daisy or Givenchy Very Irresistible (maybe maybe – I did get a very generous Chrissie bonus from work so…).
Those scents all sound lovely, GalaD!
I try very very hard to save buying myself things untill after christmas, since I am open to everyone about what I want and don’t want to recieve something I just bought! But I get tempted, oh yeah…
I don’t want to get carried away… I’m starting a hope chest this year and know that I will contribute plenty of money to that (it’s, like, my future home!). I have been eyeing a skirt from American Aparel for a long time… BUT I think I have decided to spend a little extra money on my friend. She works very hard and doesnt get hardly any money for herself, and shes been drooling over a pair of boots for months and seeing her face will be priceless (on top of how stylish she’ll look!)
Gala!
i love the Luella “Geek!” tote bag were to i find one! plesse please pleasssssssssse
let me know
I gave myself a chrissy present of having my hair colored at a salon for the first time(i have always done it myself)
i needed to get the colour stripped as it was quite dark and i wanted to go light for summer.
It took a while and i ended up having to rush out before my hair was dried as i had to be at hockey. i ended up with copper hair(it was supposed to be brown) and orange roots! she was a really lovely girl and im too embarrassed to go back to get it fixed,
At least my hair is lighter now and i can fix it the way i want it!
I recently discovered “I hate perfume,” http://www.cbihateperfume.com/, they make fabulous scents that smell wonderful, but not like most traditional flowery perfumes. Everything they make is so much more individual and interesting. I think it’s something you and your readers might enjoy. They offer interesting single note scents (accords) in almost any smell you can imagine, some of their own mixtures (my favorites are “At the beach 1966,” it REALLY smells like a day at the beach, and “In the Library”), and they even offer custom mixtures made just for you! If none of the perfumes you ordered are quite right you should check out I hate perfume.
i bought myself two t-shirts from Hot Topic today at the mall!!
One is black and has Pikachu on the front. And the other is white and says “I (heart) Dinos (It doesn’t really SAY Dinos. Theres a picture of a green Dino on it!!) Hehehe.
i’m quite fond of buying myself christmas presents. =]
Heels! They have to be perfect though, and I don’t know what that means, but I will when I see them!!
Also, I’m in need of getting my eyebrows done. =)
