Raw Hot Chocolate

[ 1 May 2008 ]

Cold temperatures are rife across the world at the moment, so here’s a raw hot chocolate recipe from Emrys Tetu, our official iCiNG Transformation Challenge sponsor!

For a rich raw chocolate treat you can enjoy any time, and especially for warming up on a cool day, try this deliciously easy hot chocolate recipe:

<3 1/2 cup hot water (just heated to hottest comfortable drinking temperature, not boiled)
<3 1 tablespoon raw coconut butter or oil
<3 1 tablespoon raw wild honey, preferably local
<3 1-2 tablespoons raw almond butter
<3 3 heaping tablespoons raw cacao powder
<3 1/2 teaspoon raw vanilla powder or 1 teaspoon other form of vanilla
<3 Pinch whole sea salt

In a blender, combine the above ingredients until smooth, adjusting all to your palette’s preference. This makes a concentrated chocolate sauce, which you may then dilute and enjoy with others (it would be quite a lot for one person all at once!) or save in the refrigerator for use as desired. Before serving, thin the sauce by at least half with more hot water. I usually drink this at about 1 part the above recipe to 3 or 4 parts additional hot water.

By only heating the water to hottest comfortable drinking temperature the recipe remains raw, but is still satisfyingly hot chocolatey. Enjoy this healthy treat with my best wishes for your health and happiness!

Love,

Emrys

Super-love & cupcakes,
Gala <3

  1. That sounds so amazing!
I’ve been vegan for about ten years now and would love to eat more raw food but apart from fruit, vegies and nuts I’m stuck. I think the main problem is is that I find the food too plain for my liking, and also in winter I want to eat warm food. Does anyone in Auckland know where to find things like the raw ingredients mentioned? I’d find it a whole lot easier if I had the ingredients to make recipes like this!

  2. hey, this looks delicious! but I am with you Katiebot, where the heck do I find all those raw ingredients? I am in Melbourne… does anyone know?!
gosh and my skin is going ballistic … it’s like it hates me being semi-raw, or is getting rid of all the gunk at once cos im eating so well? is this normal?
I don’t know what is going on!!!?!?!?

  3. i am so confused about raw… what is it? have you got a post about it.

i know it sounds stupid but i thought it was just eating “raw” food, ie: uncooked food… i am confusedddd!!!! :D

  4. Hi Gala!
I went to the Victoria Markets today to buy a container of raw cacao powder, but they had sold the last one! It wasn’t you who bought it was it….? ;-)
Do you know where else this is sold, also the raw cocoa butter/oil and raw almond butter? All the almond butters I find contain “lightly roasted” nuts.
    Hope you’re doing well. :-)
    Thanks doll,

  5. Oh my gosh that looks/sounds sooo amazingly delicous!!

Where can I buy raw and does it cost too much extra?

    <3 Mandy · May 2, 02:40 AM · #
  6. I have an odd feeling that it will be silly hard to find some of these things in the UK, if we do it will be Muchos expensive :(

    Sounds amazing though :D

  7. What about us Non-Raw Vegans? Nesquick & Milo?

  8. This sounds delicious! I’ll definitely give it a try. Do you have any other delicious raw recipes like that? I’d like to get some ideas for healthy snacks!

  9. I’m going to go and eat my beef mince rissoles and steamed vegetables and then have some full cream milk and Milo and feel thoroughly cast aside.

  10. Amelia J; What about us Non-Raw Vegans? Nesquick & Milo? made me chuckle. Ceci n’est pas un hot chocolate…

  11. Wait, are you saying that if water is boiled it is no longer “raw”? That sounds kind of ridiculous. How would boiling water remove any nutrients or vitamins from it?! Water HAS none.

    <3 Jane · May 2, 04:35 AM · #
  12. Boiling water removes oxygen from it, though – it is actually better not to boil it! They always say that you shouldn’t make tea with boiling water, because it’s deoxygenated and the tea can’t infuse properly or something.

I am dying to know what today’s news is…

    <3 Char · May 2, 04:38 AM · #
  13. I heard boiling water removes alot of the flouride, which is good for your TEEF. But if you boil it that doesn’t mean it’s not raw anymore. It’s NEVER raw. Water has been evaporated and rained down millions of times over and sent to plants where they get the poo out and stuff like that. So basically, if it comes out of your tap then it’s not raw, if it came from the ocean it’s not raw. Water has things put in and taken out, it’s been condensed into gas and made into liquid and frozen and desalinated. Water is WATER and it’s the healthiest drink ever. I don’t think Gala means that boiling water makes it ‘un-raw’ anyway, I think she means to save your tastebuds from burning.

  14. I suppose boiling water would cook the ingredients, whereas warm doesn’t.

    <3 MagpieDandy · May 2, 05:59 AM · #
  15. Exactly MagpieDandy. It’s not the water we’re concerned about, it’s the damage it is doing to the food it’s added to.

  16. that sounds rather tasty. i am seconding the call for more raw recipes that aren’t just fruit, nuts and salad – i didn’t even know half of these things existed! :) xx

    <3 sophie~ · May 2, 07:44 AM · #
  17. Amy – raw almond butter would be super-easy to make yourself if you have a food processor.

    <3 Jessica · May 2, 07:49 AM · #
  18. This should qualify Emrys as “certifiably awesome” if she wasn’t so already! Sounds yummier than most powdered hot chocolates! Yum. Thanks a bunch :) I suppose one could also use the concentrate as the flavoring when making raw ice creams/sorbets, too…

  20. Ditto that! Where is the surprise!! It has to be bedtime in Melbourne now, surely?!

  21. Jessica,

For the almond butter in your food processor… how do you do that?!

I’ve tried before by just sticking almonds in there and processing forever, but all I got was a grainy mess. Is there something else I need to add?

  33. What on earth is going on?
I don’t think the surprise would be that she’s going to the Raw Chocolate Rave in NYC, she said it was a surprise for iCiNG.

  34. Hello, lovely chocolate fans…

Mmmm! Just home from the yummy Raw Chocolate Rave in NYC and am so delighted to see your comments about the Raw Hot Chocolate Recipe. The ideas you exchanged about heating the water are spot on. I don’t know Melbourne’s stores (or the UK’s) for that matter, but you can definitely order raw chocolate online, if it comes to that.

All of my recipes are open to lots of creative substitution, and if you make your own almond milk (a little bit of a project, but absolutely delicious) that would would be lovely gently warmed and used in place of the almond butter and the water.

This recipe’s also nice with cinnamon added, and if you add a smidge of cayenne pepper, too, it’ll be Mayan style hot chocolate. I often make this recipe with different honeys for a marked difference in flavor each time.

    Have fun!

    Love,
    Emrys
