Style Tips -- 8th June 2008

“One of God’s own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, too rare to die.”
Next time you’re feeling a bit dour, strip down to your underwear & do a faux-sexy dance in front of the mirror. I think Sade’s Smooth Operator makes a good soundtrack for this kind of activity! Pout your lips, toss your hair & wiggle your hips. Glance back over your shoulder & wink at your reflection. I guarantee it will make you smile & feel at least a little bit better!
Regardless of your financial situation, treat your friend to a meal. It doesn’t have to be 5-star, it could just be a slice of pizza & a drink, but it will leave a huge impression, & they will love you for it.
If you feel awkward next time you go out dancing — like you don’t look good or you don’t dance well enough or you’re not cool enough to be there — take a break. Go to the corner of the room, drink some water, survey the scene & make a decision. Decide to own yourself & what you’re doing. Own your dancing, own your body, take control. Decide that you’re sexy, amazing, cool & glamorous. Decide that you’re a fabulous dancer & that you’re just going to cut loose. Decide that you’re the queen (or king) of the room & that everyone else in there is just your loyal subject, dancing for your entertainment. Imagine you are wearing a crown (or put on a tiara if you feel that way inclined!). Don’t feel the need to dance a certain way — just be you. Claim a place on the dance floor, flick your hair, spin around & keep your head up. You have to own it. As soon as you act like you belong to be there, you’ll start to have much more fun & people’s reactions to you will mirror that back at you. Plus, there’s nothing more appealing than a confident person having fun on the dance floor!
Make cupcakes at 3am with a friend. Scoff them & then collapse into a sugar & exhaustion-induced coma. Fabuleux!
Super-love & cupcakes,
Gala ![]()

Wow! You just keep getting cooler!
I’m phoning my firend right now! :D
Now if only I had friends…
But seriously, these are some great ideas. Especially the cupcakes one. I could really use some frosting now.
early morning/late night baking is one of the most sublime experiences I’ve ever known. Usually we make muffins, because then we can sort of justify it as breakfast food. 4 am = breakfast time, right? :D
And I love that quote! Thanks so much for sharing!
Trisha — Mmmm, frosting. Come to NYC & I’ll take you on a cupcake tour! ;D
Marie — I like doing anything in the very late night/early morning. I guess because everyone else is asleep… it’s just a nice time to get things done.
the tip about dancing: so true:) a few months ago i started going out to dance again with my friends after the end of a 2-yrs long relationship (btw..how bad is it to quit going to clubs because you’re too ‘busy’ with your bf?!bad mistake) and at the beginning I was feeling awckward! then i realized i was there to have fun and enjoy the music (i actually love dancing), i just relaxed and i really started enjoying myself (& amusing my friends eheh)!:)
Yay, I love style tips AND hunter s thompson!!
those are lovely tips – i wish the top one worked though. when i strip down in front of a mirror, i think ‘eurgh’.
I’m convinced that if I ever decide to get a tattoo, it WILL be a Gonzo tattoo. My love of Hunter has pretty much surpassed every other interest in my life. It’s been with me since grade 9 (or 10) and now I’m a University student.
And dancing and posing in front of the mirror in your underpants is such a self-esteem booster (and so much fun). That is, if you love your body. I’m no super model, but I am now super happy with the way I look! I love my 41” hips!
oh my, great tips, i’m going to go and feel fabulous now
ohhh i’ve done the cupcakes thing before! its so fun! also baking cookies is a great idea
I totally agree with the buying your friends food thing. One time I was getting coffee and I saw a girl I had class with and had only talked with a few times. She bought my coffee and I still remember and think it was so nice!
nice tips! my one for the summer is to completely abandon facebook and all other social networking sites that seem to rule my life, and communicate with my friends by post! ...off to read your ‘snail mail’ article again now…
never until this week did i really cut loose and dance (sober) in public at an AMAZING concert (the raconteurs) and it was SO worth it. definitely the best concert experience ever and i 50% have myself to thank for just giving up on the self-consciousness and going for it. perfect advice
Last one is good advice because I have loads of gigs that I’m going to soon, and I’m always really self conscious because I normally push my way to the front and then just wave my arms a bit. but I’ll definitely try to remember to dance – it shows the band you’re enjoying it, and often your friends join in after a while! I’ll also try the first one at some point :)
I’ve stayed up late baking a cake with my friend before, and it was SUPER fun. Of course that may have to do with the seven cups of coffee we each downed…no wonder everything seemed so hilarious at the time.
Is that you? I love the quote and the Ralph Steadman typeface, but it does look like it says “foo weird fo live” etc.
These made me smile, such wonderful ideas! And I adore that photo…
thats one of my favourite HST quotes.. way to make me smile, gala.
I think style tips is one of my favourite weekly features, everything is just so fabulous.
Oh, remember AGES ago you wrote a lovely post about sorting through your wardrobe and making cards about outfits and wearing things you never wear? I did a post about it on my blog but I could not find the original post to reference people back to? I still mentioned you, it’s here hailmary
I just hate feeling like I stole the idea from you, plagiarism is never stylish?
Thanks. I’ll take it down if you like.
Yayyy! I always love your style tips ;D
Ah yes, here it is (what that fabulous quote reminded me of): www.ivanahelsinki.com/Diamond_…
*I simply HAD to comment this entry because it was as if it was written about me…lol! I [try to] dance [sensual]..lol to Smooth Operator [my fav Sade song] ALL THE TIME! I take my friends out to eat to different diners and restaurants all the time. Even if I really can’t afford it at the time. Oh, and 3am is the only time I bake cupcakes! I don’t know why, but if it’s any time before 1am…the mood just isn’t right. Call me weird…LOVE it!
Lux — No, it’s not me. It’s pretty cool though!
Mary — No, that’s okay! I think you mean this article, or at least this series… galadarling.com/article/wardro… Yeah?
harleyQ — That’s amazing! Maybe I plugged into your brain by mistake! xx
I like how you say “decide”, rather than “think” or “convince yourself” ;)
the food tips is so true! You don’t have to buy expensive food to love it..sometimes I buy a bag of my favourite cheap snack outside my uni’s campus and enjoy every bit of it, it makes me sooo happy!! Dancing in your underwear is awesome too :D
Thanks for the dance tip. I have a bf so I don’t really care about other ppl when we go dancing…xD but thanks! you never know when it could come handy ;)
For years I was too self conscious to dance with my friends….I wasted many many school discos and parties by just sitting down all night!
But now my besties and I go clubbing almost every week to dance, and it’s the best fun!
I don’t know what changed, I think I eventually realised that no one else is really watching you. Everyone else is there to have fun, not to laugh at how you dance!
Ohh! I love the dance advice.
This past January at my (former) companies annual party, me and the girls from the shop took to the dance floor, and I’m not the dancing type. I just went out and had a blast! me and one girl even made a (terrible) attempt at dancing to Soulja Boy.
It was horrible.
And hilarious.
Awesome ideas. Dancing is the perfect de-stresser.
Coincidentally, I’ve done all of these things in the last week :D
Well, the dancing and the meal — but it’s not too late for me to call around a cupcake-making buddy…
Dear Gala,
I don’t really know where to write this, so I’ll write here, but feel free to remove it, as this is not related to your article. I recently started a blog[ in may] not as a full time thing, just so I can have a place where I could freely state my points of view. Anyway, I wanted to start a daily thing where I post an outfit followed by a little story . And here’s my problem. Polyvore does not have a suitable code for Wordpress.I tried entering both the blog code and the forum code and the set still won’t appear. I was wondering whether you could spare some time and help me fix this. Maybe you’ve already experienced this, or know about another site that allows you to create sets…I really don’t know who else to ask and since you’re the first person that popped into my mind I thought I’d give it a go. Well, that’s about all.If you have the time please send me an email or just comment here.Oh! and I love love love you blog, it’s fantastic, fresh and totally fabulous !!
Jamie – Soulja Boy is my FAVOURITE to dance to right now!
When I hit the dancefloor, I nudge my way straight to the front, right up to the DJ and dance my arse off. If you’re up the front then you don’t have to see everyone else cause you have your back to them, plus you get to immerse yourself in the bass.
Trisha Ill be your friend! Hehe
I love dancing to Smooth Operator! Great tips Gala! xx

If you copy the blog code and paste in HTML editor mode, when you flip back to visual is should appear. It always works for me in Blogger and just to test I opened a Wordpress account and it worked there too!
Mail me if you want to ask anything!
Synchronicity at work…just received this contribution to the film project I set up, here’s your frosting:

Hahahah, that’s what I do when I go dancing.
Only I really believe it. I swear I am the weirdest baddest dancer ever. But I really love to dance, and I always imagine everyone just WISHES they were having as much fun as I was.
I feel like I am releasing so much good energy that no one could possibly look at me and think I looked silly!
But I always get kind of tired when I feel like i’ve run out of moves.
I really need to go to a dance party right about now, because I feel Exhausted!!! It sounds like the perfect pre
Oh, hurrah! That 3 A.M. cupcake-thing is my favorite activity!
the icing on cupcakes is so crucial. especially at 3am. also nice job working hunter s. thompson into a fashion blog!
i really like the inviting a friend idea. it’s cute and will make them feel special.
Gala, I LOVE the style tips you post, all of them! They’re my favourite thing about your website! I’ll try that dancing thing cause I always feel sooo self-conscious while dancing, I have never really danced in public (or even in private, can you imagine!?)
- Laiba
vanessa — Hunter gets a lot of lip service here! You should use the search function & look up his name… I dressed up as him on his birthday last year galadarling.com/article/happy-gonzo-day ;D
Laiba — OMG! You must start dancing! Shake yo’ toosh!
oh wow thankyou for these. i hope to find a friend oneday who will bake cupcakes with me in the early morning! xoxo
Cupcakes at 3am sounds fun.I once had sleep over with some girl friends and we forgot to put up the leftover cake,so every time that night when we would walk in or by the kitchen some one would swip a lick of frosting or a small piece to munch on.
And Hunter S. Thompson is so quotable! He said some awesome things.Once college I wrote quotes of his on index cards and left them in various places around the campus.I had so much fun hiding them and wondering what type of people would find them. :)
What awesome advice Gala! I had a friend in high school who was just the most horrendous dancer- not a rhythmic bone in her body, but when she went out we’d dance the night away anyway and her confidence was infectious, so whether she could dance or not people loved being around her. She would strut around completely out of time to the music and she looked great anyway!
what if you have no friends
