Vintage Loot!

[ 1 February 2008 ]

Well, I think the stockroom sale at Circa Vintage on Monday was a huge success. Other than a mild sunburn (silly Gala!), I tottered home with two big bags full of loot. My haul?

<3 Black leather miniskirt
<3 Black school blazer with red/yellow ribbon (I am thinking of having it replaced with ribbon in another colour, so it is more versatile, but Audrey thinks it “pushes my boundaries” & he may be right.)
<3 Jade kimono coat
<3 Red Lacoste sweater
<3 Black cardigan
<3 Purple cardigan
<3 Black flower brooch
<3 Short beige trenchcoat

Grand total = $16. They were all $2 each.

But of course, you want pictures! Well, allow me to oblige you! These are not my best shots, so sorry in advance…

Vintage finds!

<3 Red lolita sunglasses (for those who wondered, I just remembered they are made by Dr Peepers!)
<3 Nubby Twiglet Golden Flats tank
<3 Black school blazer (it has someone’s name inside!)
<3 Necklace by Lolita Pop pinned to the blazer
<3 Black leather miniskirt
<3 Manolo Blahnik heels
<3 Nubby Twiglet tote bag

Vintage finds!

I love this trench so much! The length is perfection & I am going to wear the hell out of it this coming winter.

Vintage finds!

Audrey tried this sweater on but he said it looked “too hipster”. I snaffled it instead & I’m glad!

Vintage finds!

This coat needs a wash & a good iron. It has some rips but you know what? I like it anyway.

Yay!

Super-love & cupcakes,
Gala <3

  1. $2 each! I can never ever find bargains like that in Wellington. It’s too much work to travel out to porirua or something to have a look in Savemart even when you can’t driave and your boyfriends not that into it.
Your finds almost make me want to wear some colour…almost.
Your hair is amazing. I don’t have the patience or the money to maintain anything as cool as that.

  2. the kimono coat looks so good on you and it goes great with your hair n_n. Loved the school blazer, it reminds me of my old days at Catholic school, so many memories, I still have my old one but it is navy blue.

great buys! i envy you in a nice, healthy way.

    love ya gala.

    kisses.

  3. you have NO IDEA how sad i am that i missed that! I just couldn’t afford the plane ticket/petrol costs, otherwise i seriously would have been there :(

you look absolutely fantastic, as always!

  6. Wow, when I first saw that you posted up a new article (thank you, GoogleReader!), I was like, “...Is it a daily outfit?!” :D

But, now that I see it’s this…Well, I’m overjoyed. Not only do we get to sneak a peek through your vintage shopping bag (16$?! Unbelievable!), but it’s like four daily outfits too.
    :D
    Love them.

  7. I adore your new red sweater.

Can you please please let me know where you got your glasses from ? The purple coloured ones, I would like to get some just like them :]

  8. I am in love with that blazer and you are rocking it with the mini and tee. Makes me wonder whatever happened to my school uniform…not that i’d ever wear the green & gold blazer again, but our winter skirt would have looked awesome this upcoming winter, especially with some adorable wedges like the ones you brought yesterday! And i’ve never found a white shirt as comfortable and well fitted as our school ones.
I can’t believe you got all thos wicked finds for $16!!!!
You’ve inspired me to go cheap chic shopping this weekend. Other than the normal Sallies & SaveMart, can you remember any other great vintage or opshops around wellington??

  9. OMG, that blazer! Perfect if you ever decide to go as Michael Jackson for Halloween! Or, a good airline stewardess costume staple!

  12. i found a small school blazer at the camberwell markets last week and was so close to buying it, but no dice. it had a sort of purple/pink theme. seems like blazers could be really useful for winter, i remember my school blazer back in the day was like a raincoat…

your pieces are so vintage and unique!and i love the way you put an outfit together, a combination of chic and quirky and sophistication!

  17. I agree. That trench is so pretty! But I just noticed, why don’t you smile in your pictures?

    <3 Rebecca · Feb 1, 05:46 PM · #
  18. Ack, I’m so stupid! I just noticed you had your hair in a ponytail. Doi.

    <3 Elizabeth · Feb 1, 05:48 PM · #
  19. Elizabeth — Oh, it’s in a bun in one of the pictures too ;D

Rebecca — I do sometimes! I take a whole lot of pictures in a row & I only keep the best ones. Some of them I’m smiling but my leg is wonky or I look grumpy but my outfit looks great, so it’s a bit of a balancing act! Sorry if I look surly, it’s not intentional!

p/s Strangely enough, we’re about to start selling those exact red heart-shaped Lolita sunglasses as one of our AIDs charity items, whereby 100 percent of the profits go to local unemployed AIDs victims.

Have you seen the Moschino version of the Lolita sunnies? I’m in love!

p/p/s There is way too much Lolita in this one comment. Gosh.

  30. awh, lucky duck. we don’t have that many vintage stores in halifax, the only one i know of specializes in prom dresses. D:
as promising as that is (hello, a 50’s prom dress would knock my socks off!) they don’t have amazing sales like that. ah well, back to ebay.

i totally think this set of photos should be named “gala darling – business woman extraordinaire!” because it looks like the day in the life of a successful editor of a magazine or something… i love it!!

    <3 Kelsey · Feb 2, 12:58 AM · #
  31. nice finds!
i saw you at the sale, and i must admit, was far too shy to say hello!
    Silly really.

When i got to the pile of clothes out front (i spent big on the dresses and coats inside first) the good stuff seemed to be all gone. looks like you did well though!

  32. I forgot to mention that I adore that Nubby Twiglet top. When I first saw it (in your new hair pictures), the design made me think of a mermaid’s tail.

  33. I’m so jealous! Here I don’t think you can buy ANYTHING under the name ‘vintage’ for $16!

And I’ve been looking for a school blazer for ages so I’m doubly jealous too!

But it seems vintage sales are just kimono territory! I bought one at a vintage sale a couple of months ago and I absolutely love it! They just feel SO nice! You rock yours very well! I mainly just wear mine around the house as I haven’t quite worked up the nerve to wear it out yet!

  35. Gala you look AMAZING! All those clothes suit you so well, and I love how you’ve adapted the hair to each one. I wish Armstrong’s in Edinburgh (our great vintage shop) was that cheap… sigh!

You look gorgeous. The kimono coat with your hair looks just perfect!

  40. Awesome finds Gala!! I love thriftshopping but I try not to get new clothes because I believe I have enough…. I shop more for making stuff for Etsy & right now I need to go shop for… statues….!!

yes, I see all those statues in town in this cold weather with no scarves, no hats, and no capes and I feel SO BAD for them I know, I’m crazy but I feel it is my responsabitility as a founding member of Double Zero Urban Intervention Team to go & make sure they dont catch a cold. There is one of a man standing on a log like they used to do on rivers 50 years ago that I always walk by, I wanna find him a woolcap and a “mackinaw” [those red checkered black & red lumberjack vests] that I will cut up so I can fit it to him an dthere are this 4 little nymphettes I have to make them capes of something out of fake fur!! I have been too busy to do it by February is the relaxed time for this!! & this raw diet sounds good! got me interested,,, altough I will never abandon Hagen-Daaz ice cream,,,,,,,,,!

aye, it’s asnowstrom, I’m still in my pj’s and I need to go mail a gazillion packages and buy 73276872365627356 stamps + pay rent. HAAAAAA

  41. OH & you GOT to watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s [I almost impulse bought it for you on Amazon last night then thought, what if she already ordered it or 6456456 other people send it to her..]- you will LOVE IT, even if she isnt really your color palette [she’s more orange/black/beige than teal/pink/puple] but the girl has STYLE. And I think you’ll like the story, too :) It’s awfully romantic and very New York, Dahhhhhling :)

    <3 IzAlice · Feb 2, 07:46 AM · #
  42. GORGEOUS finds, I adore the blazer especially. I can’t believe you got all that for $16! (I don’t know how much that is in GBP but I don’t think it’s much, around £10?)
And over here – in my area, at least – we have “charity shops”, which, whilst they raise money for charity and are of course very good because of that, aren’t as a rule aimed at the fashion conscious! Mainly they are full of very baggy very nasty and very smelly beige cardies, mismatched beige faux crocodile print flat orthopaedic sandals, and, incongruously, poorly-tailored plum velvet crop tops. I’m serious, every charity shop in the East Midlands has at least one of each of these items. Occasionally, you will find a real gem, but the dry cleaning fee to get out the smell of cabbage, mothballs and wee will often cost more than the item itself cost….ah well. I’ll keep persevering!
By the way that necklace is beautiful, and I love that you pinned it to the jacket instead of just wearing it. I’d never have thought of that! Your creativity is wonderful. Could you possibly tell me how you did it? What sort of pins did you use?
And cor, I’m sorry for the essay!

  44. I’m really hoping to find a blazer like today, I’m going to an op-shop warehouse where they sell it by the kilo…Should be great!

And, you have re-ignited my need to own the nubby tank…though now I’m thinking I need the tote bag too.

  51. p.s. I TOTALLY forgot to tell you how your new hair looks great on you!!!! I wish I was rich & could have it done at the best salons or that hair dye wouldnt have so many ‘side-effects’ [dripping on towels, pillowcases, fading, roots, not fitting with your clothes risk etc] One extreme colour is wonderful but it sort of automatically prevents you from wearing some clothes that wont fit and not only my wardrobe is constituted of big, bold pieces of pure in-your-face bright color [Ive been practicing that no logo, no image, no picture on the clothes for a loong tme…. & the only ocasional patterns I’ll have will be pin-stripes, polka-dot & very rarely, plaid or “burberry” style or leopard print], but they also go all over the rainbow palette, from deep burned orange to sunny yellow to bright cyan to royal blue to hot pink to lime green, with the few neutral pieces [white, black, navy, tan & charcoal] to put some balance in. I have red, orange, yellow [2 pairs], turquoise, burgundy and hot pink shoes[& also tan & black for those “normal days or you know… funerals & stuff]]. & I feel like dressing shockingly different colors on a daily basis.

Besides, everyone seems to wants my hair lately!!! Even though I rarely brush it at it all[I am sporting the messy look & tease it with a toothbrush], mostf days I just get up, dress up & dont even look in the mirror before going out [I just forget you have to “do your hair”! seriously, who has time for that? not me lately apparently] I sometimes dont wash it for 2 weeks [I hate having my hair wet] and I dont know… I used to think it was the worst color ever [dark dark brown, just enough not to be black] but apparently it goes well with my [pale pale pale] face and people says it looks like ‘asian’ hair [what?] because it’s strong and thick but straight and one male friend in particular who has fine hair complained, “I wish I had you hair” because his is fine and gets greasy so easily. Another GUY with a gorgeous long mane of sandy blonde hair told me “I wish I had your hair”!! How crazy is that!! I got that at least 5 times lately from people I knew or not. “I want your hair!!” or “Is that your real hair color?” etc. if they knew how long I hadnt washed it for, they would change their minds!!

So right now I have this whole stash of extensions in all colors and strands & stuff that I clip in to complement my outfit, and I just have to take them out at night. I need to check my clipping system though, cause I lost two without knowing already…. I guess some lucky fella will find hair extensions on the sidewalk :) Did I mention I also like my hair color a lot now, & I’m afraid if I bleach it, it wont come back :P silly I know. But why mess with a good thing?

There’s just been a big snowstorm here [like a feet and a half of snow everywhere], now all is calm and white outside and yay my free wifi works…. I’m also watching season 4 of SATC which is quite the ouch… It’s like the show is upping pace as seasons go by. I used to be a lot like Miranda with a little Charlotte thrown in [sex-wise mostly], I once asked my girlfriends which one do you think I am? and they all said “Miranda” – and my best friend was definitely Samantha – but I think now I’m a lot more like Carrie. [without stopping being my own inimitable SELF, of course] Last night I also ordered some chinese food and gave the guy a big tip because of the weather danger factor :) it was delicious & felt great not have to cook or go get groceries in the storm cuz all I got here is bread, peanut butter, coffee & tea.

I also made my first painting last night…. of a heart! [anatomic but cute]
I hung it up on the wall!

Today is a home spa day. All day staying in relaxing taking care of MEE I havent done that in a LOOOONG time. I was even too tired to wash my face before going to bed. BAD BAD ME!!! I think I’ll go get something at Lush, the just opened a boutique here in QC! But not today. I am only leaving the bed to get food or go into the bath tub.

    Ta-ta!
