Things I Love Thursday: She Who Seeks Beauty Will Find It…
She who seeks beauty will find it…
When I was in New Zealand last week, my parents & I (finally!) went to see Bill Cunningham New York at the Roxy Cinema in Miramar. For those of you who don’t know him, Bill Cunningham is the street style photographer for the New York Times, & has been at it for years. It was an excellent film & I’m so glad I got around to seeing it. It had been on my to do list for ages, but just kept slipping to the backburner. I really recommend trotting along to your local cinema & checking it out!
In the film, Bill is given an award, & during his speech, he breaks down as he says, “It is as true today as it ever was… He who seeks beauty will find it.” It gave me chills & was such a brilliant reminder.
That’s one thing that really struck me about the movie: how focussed Bill is on seeking out beauty. Everyone they spoke to said that Bill’s enthusiasm for style was what kept him going, but his devotion to only profiling what he really, genuinely LIKED is what separated him from everyone else. Bill never tries to make fun of anyone’s style, & he’s never nasty with his photography — even though, of course, in a city like NYC, that would be all too easy. His documentary-style photography is a celebration of individuality & personal expression. I love his ethos, & I really believe it’s that commitment to positivity which makes people exceptional.
It’s all about being thankful & focussing on the good; not getting bogged down by the muck & mire of daily life. Easier said than done, sure, but certainly something to strive for!
On a more personal note, last night was my birthday party. It was amazing, amazing, amazing. It felt so good to be surrounded by a group of people who I respect & love! It was probably my best birthday yet. Thank you so much to everyone who came. 27 was an insanely incredible year for me — I can’t wait to see what 28 has in store!
Happy Thursday! You’re goooooorgeous!
